The Last of Us: Bill’s Safe House Cinematic

While we’re still processing the awesome and inspiring reception from fans and critics at E3, we’ve been heads down working to make The Last of Us something to get really, really hyped about. To that end, we’re excited that our San Diego Comic-Con plans afforded us the opportunity to discuss our mocap process and share some new content. It was really just a small glimpse into what we’ve been hard at work developing but we think you’ll enjoy it greatly. Take a look:

The Last of Us: Bill’s Safe House Cinematic

We first showed this video during our San Diego Comic Con panel. If you listen carefully at the onset of the video you’ll hear the sounds of Infected hunting for Joel and Ellie. The pair manages to escape into the house of some guy in a gas mask. But are they safe?

The masked man is a new character named Bill. Bill knows Joel somehow and he owes Joel a favor. What for? Well, we’re not talking about that yet but you’ll definitely be hearing more about Bill and what makes him tick in the months rolling up to launch. For starters, we also revealed that Bill is voiced by accomplished Hollywood actor W. Earl Brown, who has appeared in numerous movies including Vanilla Sky, Scream, There’s Something About Mary and the upcoming movie The Lone Ranger. He also played Dan Dority in the acclaimed HBO series, Deadwood. There will be much more information to come.

It was a joy to talk with fans at SDCC about our mocap and performance process and to go behind the scenes on The Last of Us. Get ready for us to fire out more notes from the workshop as development progresses.

  • In my opinion to this date Red Dead Redemption is the best game Rockstar has ever made and this may very well be the best game Naughty Dog has ever made.

  • just wow

  • I agree with Ohiostatedog, I would like to see an optional filter. I am 31 and have a 2 year old and a 3 month old, I can easily make sure they do not see anything that I do not approve of, but both of their rooms are right next to the game room. I have to wait until they are asleep or not at home to play some titles, but as everyone with kids knows…they will a) repeat anything they hear, and b) are not always asleep when you think they are. All I need is my child going to day care saying F*(# You to the baby sitter.

Please offer a filter…it could even just be an alternate audio stream with the words bleeped out, no need to re-render scenes with alternate words.

  • Great! I’ll buy it for sure! You make the best games! :) And for what I’ve seen from the gameplay it looks amazing, expecially Ellie’s AI! Are you planning skyns? Joel looks so similar to Nathan Drake! Then maybe also a Jak skin? I was expecting it for Uncharted too!

  • So awesome.

I love the setup that leads to the next phase in gameplay from that scene as your clearly going to follow Bill around the city marked on the map looking for car parts.

I am really disappointed that the game is not coming out this year but I guess you can’t rush perfection.

After the Uncharted series, if this is what Naughty Dog has planned for us after 6 years since the PS3’s launch, I can’t wait to see what they are going to give us next gen.

Are any more games coming to the ps3 from ND or will The Last of Us be the last one?

As for people complaining about cursing, maybe you should purchase some family friendly teen rated games and leave the mature games to us adults that aren’t so squimish. I know I know in a post apocalyptic world would think everyone would be kinder and nicer to each other. Most of the people running through the streets are looking for people to give food to not take it.

  • Ellie talks like she’s a smoker. Looks great though.

  • MP_is_for_Chumps

Its amusing how some here have a problem with adult content in a clearly M rated, adult game.

Perhaps ND should turn TLOU into a Kirby spin off just in case your 4 year old kid wants to watch u play during your usual midnight gaming sessions :/

Anyway, i gotta write a letter to Tarantio about the cursing in his R rated movies. My ears are soooo sensitive to swear words!

  • MP_is_for_Chumps

Actually when i think about it, knowingly exposing your children to adult content, is that like child abuse?

…It think these people should be more worried about the FBI than swear words LMFAO

  • game looks fantastic!…know what would be cool? If you could switch between ellie and …and….the main guy, like the (dont kill me) lego games, in puzzle segments! Or, parts of an old ps1/ ps2 hidden throughout the game you need to collect for ellie, she can play some of your old games, jak? Or if its considered the future, have a body of a dead treasure hunter, holding a map of some sort, that sends you on quest…and it can be Nathan Drake!

I just need this game to be perfect.

So instead of praising you guys…I thought I would help. lol, all hail Naughty Dog!

  • @ 58 Naughty Dog is basically the only dev putting out graphics like this (on console). there’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting your teen to get exposed to great content, without the game dropping the F~bomb every cut scene!

The more popular a dev gets, the more people as for! I mean they do like money right? call of duty did it, to a certain extent. I think ND should do it… if it pleases the consumer and means more exposure, and more sales.

  • The game looks awesome but there is one thing that is needed to confirmed is this game going to have a limited edition. You know like Uncharted 3, well if u ask me i would love to have a action figure of Joe and Ellie( dont know if the name was right) dahaha and oh and one more thing, since there are many people asking for censorship, i can say that me also is hoping to have this game a bleep on some lines, my family get used to drake when he says Son of a B#&$ but F#@% you is far far away to their understanding. Me and the fans were hoping to have a censorship for the game ofcourse its optional but still it is ur decision whether you put it or not. I respect you guys Thanks

  • Is this going to be some sort of trilogy type thing or just a stand alone game? It looks awesome!

  • smart mouth disrespectful young lady like that girl wouldnt be lastin too long around that town. especially to grown hungry desperate big dudes.. great graphics and stuff,,, but you run around in the real world F-bombing people every third word and they gonna drop you,,without blinking an eye,, think about it naughty dog..

  • @Vince47 Hey man I know what you feel, but if we look it on a different perspective, this attitude of her makes them in danger. U know because when she drop the F bomb to people, people get pissed off, they get in danger instead of making out to other survivors. And probably she lost her innocence because of the things that is going on around her

  • @64 what in gods name are you babbling about,,why should i look at it from a different perspective,,, here it is my man ,, if im in a biker bar with 10 big bikers,, you think im gonna walk out of there in one piece or get them to assist me after callin them Fbomb and then hittin them on the arm with a pipe.. huh ?…. all im saying is ND needs to keep it realism in check to make the game believable,, that little chick would be layin on a pool table in tears with a mouth like that,,, thats real my friend…if the whole game is gonna revolve around some little teenage girl cussin at every person and walkin away like its no big deal im a little less interested in this game… and who said anything about her losing her innocence ???

  • ToKKeNbL00dMoNeY

ok people are getting way outta hand, shes not swearing every five seconds she said FU because the guy hand cuffed her and the only other time i ever heard her swear was in the gameplay where she said hey A hole when he had no ammo in his gun so just knock off the BS people it a mature title not some garbage game like cod that says mature but is for 10 year old :P

  • @ ToKKeNbL00dMoNey – Maybe you should watch the gameplay trailer again. They say the F word about 10 times in maybe 2 minutes of dialogue.

  • I want this game yesterday! Seriously, turn on your little time machine and beam me one yeaterday, this game is going to be epic.

  • this game keeps getting more interesting to me the more i hear about :)…

  • Oh my…This could be the greatest thing I have seen this gen. I seriously cannot wait to play it!

  • Goddess_Katheryn

Wow! I love the atmosphere and compelling storyline! It’s so enticing, I can hardly wait until it comes out.

I also believe the cursing is just right for the situation and they live in a lawless world now but that’s just my opinion. However, if it bothers people with children or something, why not use High-Definition Headsets or lower the volume? I agree with the people that being a M-rated game, profanity should be the least of your worries. There is intense gore and violence… I find that much worse. I’m pretty sure they hear it in school almost everyday now.

  • Not sure if you’re looking at these comments Eric, but if you are, I just wanted to say how inspiring it is to see what you guys are doing with the medium. Though I’ve been playing games heavily for a little over 20 years, I only recently got hired into the industry about 2 years ago with no prior knowledge of game development. We’re an extremely small company and until recently I was the only modeler and animator and so I basically had to learn all the pipelines and software myself. In doing so I have come to really appreciate the quality of time and effort you guys put towards not only the technical side of you’re development, but also on the design and balance of the game-play and narrative as well. Gonna take a few more years to meet some of the requirements on your Careers page for Game Designer, but every game you all create makes me look forward to working with you guys and help push the medium to connect with people in new and innovative ways!! Cheers

  • It makes no sense why there would be so much cursing The Last Of Us. All it does is limit your audience. Most gamers are teenagers so why eliminate them? Yes, there will still be teens who get the game but there will be a lot who’s parents will not allow them to have it. There should be a filter feature because there are a lot of adults who would get but are turned off by the language as well, myself included. So why put all that money and effort into something, just to turn around and limit yourself because someone thinks something is cool that isn’t? Guaranteed the people who still buy it anyway, would buy it without all the cursing that only detracts from the story and actually just shows ignorance on the part of the speaker, only showing they cannot come up with something more creative. Naughty Dog is awesome and this game looks awesome please do not limit yourselves this way. It’s like opening a store in Japan but only allowing americans to shop there.
