UPDATED: Upcoming Change to PlayStation 3 and PSP Game Content on PlayStation Network

UPDATE: On November 17th (Pacific Time), the PlayStation network will undergo maintenance. Once this maintenance window has completed, the new policy will apply. If you want to purchase content under the current rules, please do so before this maintenance begins on November 17th.

We’d like to inform you of some upcoming changes to the usage policies for PlayStation Network game content. As of November 18, 2011, the number of devices that can be activated on one PlayStation Network account for game content purchased from the PlayStation Store will be updated as follows:

For game content purchased after November 18, 2011, a new policy will apply and the number of devices that can be activated will be as follows:

  • PS3: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PS3 systems.
  • PSP: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PSP systems.

Please note that this update will not affect game content purchased before November 18. The PSP rights include PSP-1000/2000/3000 series as well as the PSPgo system.

PlayStation Network users are able to change the activation setting through each device, and Sony Computer Entertainment plans to provide a new PlayStation Network account management website where users will be able to deactivate particular devices attached to their PlayStation Network account via their PC.

For more details on how to activate/deactivate the devices, please visit here or contact consumer services.

  • Trying for the…I don’t know how many times it’s been now, to ASK THIS QUESTION! Trying a different wording to ask this question once again. Now, I have one system but I have more then two accounts on that system. Is this change a hardware situation only or will having more then two accounts on one machine cause a problem such as only two of the accounts being able to play a newly purchased game and the other accounts on it not being able to play the newly purchased game. Hope this wording of the question makes it through this time.

  • Mr_Vsin … I’m a lowly user, but it’s a “machine” number. How many accounts on a machine (thus far) haven’t been anything about anything –anyone can buy a game and ALL on that one machine could play it (except for some games, but most all were “free” for the whole machine’s accounts to play.) Very nice (of course it should be)

So then the limit for portable that is coming being the same as the PS3 limit, it’s “just” shifting down 3 on each side.

Don’t give them any big ideas, hey! ACK!

  • WOW. That sucks Sony! What about people that really own 5 PS3’s?

  • I almost forgot to add something (after trying to post something so many times), though I doubt it makes any difference in my saying this here.

The Vita should have it’s own 2 slots. I am in a house where I have a PSP and so does my significant other. We were on the fence if we should get a Vita at some point. As long as we both have a PSP, we now know we will not get a Vita because our games would not be able to transfer to the new machine without loosing the ability to play them on our PSP machines. (a constant going back and forth of activation would be more trouble than it’s worth).

If you wonder why have both, well the reason is that we don’t want to make certain games we play (such as PS1 games) look any uglier by playing them on a higher definition screen. It’s the same reason I would rather not play any games for older systems on a new HD TV but instead on an older CRT TV.

  • What about the people that have a PS3, a PSP and are thinking to buy a PSVita. Maybe a solution could be TO BUY THE ACCESS to a third PS3/PSP system … don’t know.

  • I like oZc-Gauss’s suggestion. Now that is an option that I would consider if the price was right and the TOS of it was reasonable. An option that may would help sway me back into considering buying a Vita.

  • yea… 5 is too much, 2 is WAY too little…

I have a PSPGo, and PSP… and what about PSVita? I’ll have 3 systems all compatible with my PSP contents… at least make the portable stuff 3 system please -_-”’

  • make it (3) ps3’s this is to much of a drop

  • just wait till the sony stock tanks next year THEN buy a controlling share of sony :D

  • Removal of OS installation, blackout of February-March 2010, PlaySation Plus, PlayStation Network down for more than a month due to hackers, now this console limitation… I’m happy I only have 2 PS3. I really feel bad for people having more.

I say what’s next Sony??? Didn’t we, honest gamers, go through so much already? We’ve stayed loyal to you all through this. Is your goal satisfying your real customers, who actually spend money, or making them pay even more because of hackers taking advantage of your flaws???

I say you should concentrate on having better protection of your network and business and reward honest gamers instead of punishing them.

  • I have one question with this. I got 3 consoles right now and a lot of games downloaded. The article says that this will not affect game content purchased before November 18. So I have no problem and I can play the games in my 3 systems.

My question is: if for some reason I delete a game for one of the consoles. Can I still download it AFTER november 18 in my third console?

    Sorry for the bad english

  • I’m very upset with what Sony is doing with its users it is a nonsense because changing it would be falling lower class getting the xbox leaving much more attractive after that I’m thinking about purchasing a xbox

  • Why should you have to buy the content more than one time? Sony still after all these years and blunders (Missing the MP3 boat, removing backwards compatibility, eliminating features, treating honest customers worse than the pirates) still has an adversarial and punitive attitude towards its customers.

I can take my PS3 games and play them on either of my two PS3s, my friends PS3, my immediate family’s PS3 so why shouldn’t I be able to do the same with digital content? Sony…you used to innovate customer solutions now you implement punitive measures that do nothing to combat piracy but everything to alienate your customer base. Every update I have done on my PS3 has been mostly punitive in terms of benefits to me.

As a mainly PC gamer I certainly know where my loyalty will go next hardware generation. In fact all my recent purchases with the exception of Dark Souls have been PC because of these punitive measures..Skyrim in a few days and do you think I will buy it for my PS3? Heck no…PC.

Please Sony…get back to your roots…this treating your loyal customers as the enemy has to stop.

  • This is complete BS. I own 3 PS3 and 4 PSP’ in my house hold. So it’s nice to take content from one device to the other. So now I get it stuck I’m my a@@ because Sony can’t figure out how to punish the people f’ing it up for the rest of us. Complete and utter BS SONY. Great way to piss on your loyal customers.

  • I mean really sony are y’all that hard up for money where as the people who have multiple systems for their kids and family will have to suffer cause you all are f’n money hungry and then wonder why things like you all gettin hacked happens maybe if we speak with our pockets and don’t pay for PSN titles maybe you all will get it. you all won’t implement new features unless it’s for plus users won’t update the freaking browser but you will happily take away features from us huh? way to go sony! smmfh!

  • 3 slots would be reasonable, and vita should have it´s own pair of slots not shared with psp and go.

  • wtf really?

  • Ok great Sony, yet another launch feature eliminated. So with all these dropping system features, when are we going to get cross game voice chat?!?

  • And Sony removes yet another feature. Apparently they love bad PR over at Sony. Wonder what they’ll take away from us next. There making it really hard to stay loyal.

  • A usage policy is a feature now?

Troll harder guys. Next you’ll be saying the ToS is a feature.

  • @apoco_483: You’ll be able to deactivate your broken PSP via the website that they’ll set up, did you even read the damn blog? It says it right there.

@Huicho_MX: Gaming is not a right, it’s a privilege. If you can’t afford it, you do without until you can. That’s how life is supposed to work, but people like you are simply entitled and think that it’s your born right to be able to play whatever you want without actually paying for it.

That’s not how life is. Stop thinking you’re special and deserve things without earning them.

  • Screwing over the customers and families that honestly bought multiple devices based upon your own selling points, thanks sony, i personally own 4 of your wonderful devices because your very own Jack Tretton said i could at E3.

Now it just feels like i flushed several hundred dollars over a false promise.

This website also sounds quite fishy, if i deactivate the Game feature on one of my systems it negates All Content, the same will be the case with this website unless its activated or deactivated by each Individual Content, otherwise it will affect my all older content from before the 18th.

I am very disappointed in you right now though, cant wait for the arguement this will cause in my family…

  • Another way to say this: y’all wanted us to accept online digital game buying. We did.

Now you say, “stay in the past.” “You can still play your digital content on multiple devices as before, if you bought it before. But anything new you buy digitally is restricted to 2+2.”

So, it’s back to pre-digital. Less gaming. Sure there are customers who don’t care about this, it doesn’t hurt them. It does hurt the family gamers.

It sure seems odd, reflecting on this, there is no word to Plus members about anything different, like giving them “a bit of clout” to be able to have 3 PS3’s activated for instance. Plus has had value & status but could offer more to users like have tiered family plans.

What am I saying! I’m asking you to make me pay more than I am now for Plus, and to give us less than what we had the ability to do before. Pay more for less. Huh.

There are games I’ve been waiting for, coming in 2012. This puts a huge damper on the whole idea of any new games.

  • WINAS3 you said: “I am very disappointed in you right now though, cant wait for the arguement this will cause in my family…”

You should hear how much my family argues about this in our house already, and the picture I got from what you said tells such a woeful future story.

We all need counseling, shrinks. How can any family be nice with this amount of what will come down to bickering, bad attitudes, yelling, breaking things.

“The future’s so bright …” oh, that was a couple of days ago.

So it’s back to the old drawing board. Maybe I can get my old GameBoy from 1992 to work again. I know I can pick up a working old one. Nice catalog of games out there for a pittance. (roll eyes)

  • @FriedConsole just because we can afford more then 1 ps3 why does that mean we should re buy all these [DELETED] games we got ripped off on in the first place? i mean whAT EVER happen to loyalty? i own 5 ps3s not even counting the 3 dead ones that sony weaseled out of replacing i for one will not be buying ANY MORE GAMES FROM SONY! ever!!! every year that passes you just try less and charge more p.s sony if you didnt charge so much for cheaply made [DELETED] maybe every one wouldnt share there games when the ps4 comes out ill be getting the new xbox this time ps3 only made 4 good games since it been out

  • Any one complain is only doing so becuase they wont be able to be broke @** gamers and not pay for there stuff, i see why sony is doing this, a $10 add shared with 4 other ppl is $40 they rnt getting, i know several friends who do this, it is the same as stealling, stop your wineing, if this was xbox, you would be able to use your stuff off line on but one system, the one you bought the content on, if you cant buy the games/DLC, GET A FLIPIN JOB

  • @DragonWind get the [DELETED] outta here ive spent over $1500 alone on psn for me and my kids so your telling my i should re buy them 4 more times so my kids can play? [DELETED]

  • this is a forum full of whiny babies… and those of you claiming that this was a reason you bought the console…. that’s a lie… the people who claim they only bought a ps3 for the Other OS feature… LIES… it’s one excuse after another to whine and cry about things that don’t effect you in the least… grow up and quit whining or go buy an XBox

  • @671 I totally agree… they’re only crying because they can’t use their friends DLC because they’re misers… it’s not like the DLC costs a ton of money… OH NO 4 bucks for additional content and trophies…. HEATHENS! lol yeah… bunch of babies

  • Any chance you will change it to 3 which is needed for family’s?

  • I do not like Sony/s limit of 2 but reading some post here i can see why limit was set.
I think if you have 5 system in your own house and sharing games within your own home fine but some are sharing their account with friends and this clear abuse as long do not live same house.

Limit should be 3 at least but many abuser in these post alone.

Sharing your account with friends does not seem bad but now consider Sony is not making money of him because your give him everything.

You share your PS+ account with him/her now that’s money Sony loose out on(One less PS+ Sub)

You buy God of War collection and both share it sony it’s out of another sale.
Even if he buy’s something from your account and both play your screwing sony of money.

This decison is all about Money and nothing else.

Most do not like this change but consider Sony side of things also.

  • LOL only the cheap bastards are complaining
seriously how many console do you use at once?

  • Now that whats going to happen thank you more games to get from friends.

  • I would like to point out Sony is going against the standard for devices. Both apple and Amazon allow you to share your library with up to 5 devices. The idea is a household should only have to buy media once for all their devices. The difference is apple and Amazon prevent you from logging in from a device that isnt part of you account. That would be a better direction for Sony to go. I understand you want to allow people to sign in as guests at other peoples ps3 and thats fine. Just dont allow them to download. You have to be able to fix the sharing issues with reducing the number of devices. Again Apple and Amazon are able to do it.

  • Oh come on Sony…. the expected loss reported last week was just ‘1.2 billion’ dollars
    …you’re better than That. LOL

I guess a lot of the people cribbing and crying out on this post don’t get how many 0s a billion actually has
or how many 0s they had to spend to fend off cyber terrorism from groups like anonymous & putting insurance plans in place across all platforms.

I would love to see sony reverse this policy change after a targeted sizable recovery or Definitely at least increase the console limit to 3 PS3s, maybe even 4, in it’s future policy changes. It directly affects the fun element.
This change is an understandable change but it’s also just pure and simply annoying.

Please get your management sorted Sony.^

  • so you haters say that if i share my account with my friends, i steal games. but if i buy a disc and pass it to my friend so he can completly play the game and finish and make all trophies it is not stealing?
    u r a bunch of retarded kids

It’s my $. i decide what i want to do with MY digital download.
the only reason i was buying DIGITAL stuff over PSN was because we can download the same contnent over 5 PS3.
and digital download is not that easy to get, suppose i want to download black ops 18GB
i have to pay for my internet bandwidth so that mean i payed 60$ for black ops digital + i have to pay bandwidth everytime i want to download the game
so that mean over a years i can pay 3-4 time the price of ONE game just because i have to re-download the game and pay for download

only thing i hate in this world is the HATERZ!

  • @Cyb3rfr34k-iso :Enough already your perfect proof why the limit as being decreased.

Your handle on net is some many pirating site it’s not even funny:(

If PS3 are in same i think Sony should allow them to remain account as long all ps3 connection are from same ip address so your kids would be okay but Sony does see it that.

Let just hope does work with gamers that have more then 3 ps3 for legitamite/legal use in their homes.

  • Why limit the number from 5 to 2? Sounds like a move to make more money in my opinion.

  • My support to putting it at 3. We have 2 consoles downstairs (one for me and one for my fiance) and one upstairs for our children. Did Sony even ask for feedback from the people that have supported them the past several years or did they just allow “the suits” to decide?

  • So, I already buy multiple copies of a game so me and my kids can all play toghether at the same time, now i am going to have to buy the same god damn dlc more than once because of this. Bad move Sony, your afraid of people enjoying your system and now you spit in the face of your loyal customers. I have 4 working units in my home and 1 YLOD, thousands of dollars invested in dlc. Next i will have to pay for the network as well. You could atleast use some lube and give me a reach around.

  • To add to my above comment. Look at it this way…

Hypothetically speaking let’s say I buy 1 disc based game per month and 1 downloaded game per month. As previously mentioned I have 3 systems (Mine, my fiance’s and one for the kids). After 1 year’s time I now own 12 disc games and 12 downloaded games.

While I am playing one of the disc-based games that we bought, one of my other family members could be playing one of the other disc-based. No problem, it works out well.

HOWEVER, if I am playing one of the downloaded games, and my fiance is playing a different downloaded game then the children are out of luck because 2 of the 3 systems are currently being used for a downloaded game. One of us would have to stop playing, go through the (even though somewhat minor) inconvenience to swap our activations, then find something else to do.

This is a common occurrence with us at home. Maybe instead of only allowing 2 activations, you set it so you can activate specific titles per system. This way we can each play a different downloaded game at the same time on all 3 of our systems.

  • i laugh my head off with certain comments: “ohhh, poor sony… they are losing money” and others saying “noooo, game-sharing is ilegal”. yada yada yada!!! the forbidden fruit is the sweetest!!! if you are a true gamer … you know what i’m talking about. for the rest of the people who don´t understand… get this… sony doesn’t control us, we control sony.

  • sony, are you really willing to bite the hand that feeds?

  • I do not understand this… Can someone please enlighten me?

  • You idiots who think money is the issue here are so far off. Its about being able to use the stuff I bought on all of my devices. Like I said there are 3 PS3′ in my house now thanks to some aholes out there I’m getting punished. Pull your heads out of your a@@ Sony.
