Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection for PS3 (PSN)

About 20 years ago, Midway was at the cutting edge of arcade game development using a unique method of creating very realistic images. By digitizing live actors, shot in front of a green screen, a number of games were developed that had a photorealistic look not found in any other games. Games like Narc, Smash TV, NBA Jam and Terminator 2: Arcade all used this technology. This approach was applied to a number of game categories including sports, gun games, and shooters. One genre, however, had not yet been attempted – the fighting game. In 1991, a small team of four decided to try making a fighting game using digitized graphics. The goal was to make something bold, shocking, and as realistic looking as possible. The game would eventually become Mortal Kombat, the first in a series that have sold over 30 million games.

Mortal Kombat was the “bad boy” of fighting games. It unapologetically depicted blood and had a much more hard-edge presentation than its tamer competition. Mortal Kombat’s bold presentation wasn’t without its controversy, but that only fueled the game’s unstoppable popularity. In addition, Mortal Kombat introduced a deep story and unique characters that also set it apart from other fighting games.

My name is Ed Boon, I was part of that original design team of four and now am the creative director at NetherRealm studios where our team of over 100 has recently shipped the 2011 version of Mortal Kombat. As we approach Mortal Kombat’s 20-year anniversary it’s hard not to think back to where it all started. The first three Mortal Kombat games used the digitized method to create their photo realistic images and truly set the stage for our most recent Mortal Kombat game which retells their stories.

As a celebration of the games that started it all, we are very excited to be offering The Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection, which contains all three classic games (Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) available for download from PSN tomorrow, August 30th. Each game has its own unique look, style and gameplay “feel” that’s nothing like the other two. Mortal Kombat II is the preferred game of many players, but Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is my personal favorite. All three games are complete versions of their original and can now be played online as well.

It’s hard to believe we are coming up on 20 years since the original Mortal Kombat was released in the arcade. Everyone seems to have their own story of when they first saw Mortal Kombat or one of the game’s fatalities. The Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection is great way to relive those memories and we really hope you enjoy it!

  • anyone know how much it will cost?

  • @98 budamania1989

    It’s 9.99$.

  • Just played MK: Kollection. I have to say as cool as it is, I’m a bit disappointed they don’t allow you to stretch the screen in custom settings like you can in previously released solo MKII. Instead you HAVE to play standard aspect ratio with bars on the side. Seems like a poor decision if you ask me. Hopefully they can patch it in if enough people complain.

  • Memories??
I USE TO WORK IN THE ARCADES IN THE TIME OF MK1, MK2, MK3, UMK3, MK4… UNTIL INTERNET BECAME SO EXCELLENT, OUTSTANDING, SUPERB….. I STILL HAVE MY 5 ARCADE (LIGHT) HEADBANNERS….
FRIENDS & I PLAYED ALL NIGHT AFTER CLOSING… TO DISCOVER EVERY MOVE POSIBLE FOR A FATALITY, FRIENDSHIP, BABYLITY, PIT, MERCY, ANIMALITY, STAGE FATALITY, & CODES…. THAT WAS MY TRUE LOVE TO MORTAL KOMBAT… I MISS THOSE TIME’S…. BEFORE INTERNET WAS SO EXCELLENT, OUTSTANDING, SUPERB… I SOLD THE MOVEMENTS TO FAN PLAYERS… HAHAHA… THAT’S A COOL MEMORY….

  • Wow! And for only 9.99!! this is amazing :D

  • Great I’m a fan of MK…but its gonna be hard to me play this…since I already have the awesome last MK with the epic owner Kratos.
But I’ll get this when I got some money to waste.

  • they should put every mortal combat game in it old games get old put in the recent ones if u want someone to buy it

  • I WANT MORE FRIENDS

    -Gathegi-

  • and if my friend’s list gets full ill make another account

  • I’m buying it

  • Not happy SONY you have updated the EU store but not given us MK collection? why the hell not ive been waiting for this and wanted it for ages so are you gonna sort this out? give us an answer cause us from the UK/EU want this like the rest of these ppl in the US

  • For all the ppl saying they have the standard MKII.. the MKII in the kollection is soo much better IMO. The gameplay was blotchy on MKII as well as the sound would sometimes crackle and pop. One thing to keep in mind is that the MKII in the kollection was actually programmed for the PS3 from the creators of MK.. MKII off the psn was actually a port done by digital eclipse.

  • I’m sorry if this sound rude, but this should have been in development for a little bit longer. You guys put so much effort in the video department of this game (I love the filters), but you couldn’t put a little bit more effort into the audio, controls and online mode?

    – The online mode is pretty much unplayable. What type of netcode are you using? You’re making King of the Fighter XII look feasible.

    – The audio bugs are really ticking me off. Every time I knock my opponent down, the audio hiccups in both MK1 and MK2. Not to mention, the volume switches are joke. The music is too low and the sound effects is way too high no matter how much I adjust them. I also notice that some of the sound effects are missing.

    – The controls are not bad for the most part, but once in a while they don’t register. This is especially true after I paused the game. As soon as I unpause it, the controls are unresponsive for a second or two.

I really hope you have another patch in the works, because this gave definitely deserves better. It’s sad to see that emulation of MK2 in Midway Arcade Treasures 2 is far better than in this game.

  • hey can you guys fix this game. freezing issues, audio, among other minor stuff.

  • Has ANYONE gotten the UMK3 Character KOMBAT CODES to work???? 2 controllers are required but the buttons on controller 2 DO NOT RESPOND to enter in the codes!!
Is this YET ANOTHER GLITCH in the Kollection??

  • @ MickaeL486: Try entering the codes in after playing a two player game. That’s the only time the game will accept inputs from the second controller.

  • @113
While online is a bit laggy its not KOF12 bad. KOF12 my buttons didint even regester till like 10 seconds later. MK1 and UMK3 all my inputs register just fine. Iv had zero problem with audio so far. A patch would be nice but the online isint unplayable.

  • Nee More People

  • Dude, MK3?

    Normal Difficulty?

Shao Kahn is way, way, ridiculously unfairly hard for Normal Difficulty. I mean, this is part of why the Arcades failed in America; if I was dropping just a quarter (and we all know MK3 used to be at least $.50 a play) I would seriously have just spent $24 fighting his cheap BS.

My experience was mercifully ended once the PS3 froze.

Shao Kahn is stupid cheap, stupid overpowered, pure stupid. Plz fix.

  • Damn, Why no MK Trilogy? I think MK2 is already availble on PSN.

  • This game is garbage , it’s not like the arcade verisons. The online lags and mk2 is a crap port. It lacks features I want a refund!

  • i did purchase the MK arcade kollection but wasnt Rain in Ultimate MK 3? why did they remove him?
