Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection for PS3 (PSN)

About 20 years ago, Midway was at the cutting edge of arcade game development using a unique method of creating very realistic images. By digitizing live actors, shot in front of a green screen, a number of games were developed that had a photorealistic look not found in any other games. Games like Narc, Smash TV, NBA Jam and Terminator 2: Arcade all used this technology. This approach was applied to a number of game categories including sports, gun games, and shooters. One genre, however, had not yet been attempted – the fighting game. In 1991, a small team of four decided to try making a fighting game using digitized graphics. The goal was to make something bold, shocking, and as realistic looking as possible. The game would eventually become Mortal Kombat, the first in a series that have sold over 30 million games.

Mortal Kombat was the “bad boy” of fighting games. It unapologetically depicted blood and had a much more hard-edge presentation than its tamer competition. Mortal Kombat’s bold presentation wasn’t without its controversy, but that only fueled the game’s unstoppable popularity. In addition, Mortal Kombat introduced a deep story and unique characters that also set it apart from other fighting games.

My name is Ed Boon, I was part of that original design team of four and now am the creative director at NetherRealm studios where our team of over 100 has recently shipped the 2011 version of Mortal Kombat. As we approach Mortal Kombat’s 20-year anniversary it’s hard not to think back to where it all started. The first three Mortal Kombat games used the digitized method to create their photo realistic images and truly set the stage for our most recent Mortal Kombat game which retells their stories.

As a celebration of the games that started it all, we are very excited to be offering The Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection, which contains all three classic games (Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) available for download from PSN tomorrow, August 30th. Each game has its own unique look, style and gameplay “feel” that’s nothing like the other two. Mortal Kombat II is the preferred game of many players, but Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is my personal favorite. All three games are complete versions of their original and can now be played online as well.

It’s hard to believe we are coming up on 20 years since the original Mortal Kombat was released in the arcade. Everyone seems to have their own story of when they first saw Mortal Kombat or one of the game’s fatalities. The Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection is great way to relive those memories and we really hope you enjoy it!

I thought that i was going to re-live the old good days of my Sega Genesis, but it seems that I’m not doing it… :(

  • @14 & @17

I had the Sega Genesis version of UMK3 which to my understanding was the exact same as the SNES version and both Rain and Nood Saibot were playable there…

I also remember that Sheeva did not appear on that version, but I prefer Ran and Noob over Sheeva anytime…

  • Is there any chance of T2 the Arcade game for Move?

  • @58

You are correct – The Genesis and SNES versions of UMK3 had Rain & Noob as playable characters, most likely because they were released so close to the time when the next gen consoles were getting MK Trilogy. However, Arcade and Saturn had the “Original cast members” for UMK3, as pictured above.

  • By the way, I’m all over this game tomorrow :)

  • You will upload a demo to try it, right ? =)

  • I would love to ignore #59 but really whats that got to do with anything?!

    Anyway, :)

MK Trilogy HD with a character re-balance would rock my casa.

  • MORTAL KOMBAT ARCADE KOLLECTION…. COOL…. SUPER COOL TO PLAY ON LINE… BUT IF IT IS CALLED ARCADE KOLLECTION, WHAT HAPPEN WITH MK4???
    WHY IS IT NOT INCLUDED????

  • I’ll probably pick this up, but I was horribly disappointed with the AI opponent in MK2, it is nearly impossible to defeat, due to it skipping frames of animation to grab you or uppercut you out of any move. It may have been arcade accurate, but it wasn’t in any way fun.

Online is fine, and local multiplayer is great, but MK2 essentially had worthless single player, while most other fighting games manage to at least give you a fun experience you can practice on. I hope these games are better in that regard.

  • can we get a mk trilogy hd remaster with the ps1 version’s roster and khameleon added to it with gameplay tweaks, fixes, fast load times, etc?

  • Cant wait for this when will it be available in my area? I live in chicago :]

  • First Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike Online, and now this.

Good time to be a fighting game fan.

  • Too bad they canned the HD version…..it looked so dang sweet!

Oh well, glad I dumped my MK arcade machine a few years ago…..this DLC on my PS3 is about 400 pounds less! ;)

  • will it have a discount for plus members?

  • No HD – no thank you.

  • JUST ONE QUESTION. THIS GAMES WILL BE ON HD or NOT?

  • Will the game be realeased on midnight??

  • When is this game coming to the UK PSN? can you tell me please!?

  • Is this game in HD?

  • Will you still be able to get it in Australia?

  • 20 YEARS!!… Now I feel old lol I remember getting the original for my genesis when I was like 7

  • I never realized Johnny Cage wasn’t in UMK3… Why is that?!?!

  • “I USED TO LOVE TO PLAY MORTAL KOMAT BUT THE GAME CHANGES BUT THE PLAYERS STAY THE SAME 7 HOW THEY MURDER PEOPLE IS JUST WRONG GIVE MY MOM NIGHTMARES.”

  • I Need More Friend’s

  • I Need More Friend’s so i can have more fun at playing game with

  • can we focus on the new mortal kombat like you know new fatalites

  • So what time is this supposed to go online? I don’t see it in the store yet.

  • Will people who already have mk II be able to play online with people who buy it with this bundle? Im getting the bundle but I would like to play with my friends who have mkII already and arent buying the bundle.

  • this is a good deal… MK and UMK3 is worth it for me. what i think they should of done was but in MK UMK3 and MK4 and sell like MK2 for like 3 bucks if you buy this or if your a psn member… it’s a great deal… just wish they would of put MK4 in there instead of 2 just for the mix of 2d and 3d but still worth ten bucks i got to get this once it comes out.

  • Will be picking it up after work today on! MK1 is Scorpion finishing move still start up up.

  • Now, I hate to be that guy, but I don’t see Raiden… I actually believe all lost all interest in this, damn.

  • Don’t see Raiden where? in the character screen? Hes in MK I and II but not 3. And wasnt there like 3 different versions in the arcade for MK3? If I remember back that far there was an MK3 before there was an UMK3

  • Sorry I forgot to say UMK3 he was in trilogy, but I never realized he was ever missing from a game you know?

  • Come on, Sony! Release this baby for us! =D

  • It’s up, just use the PSN store search function.

  • @94 thnks i found it

  • Well done! Excellent! Outstanding!

  • Sid,

No discount for owners who actally have MKII, No buy!!!

There no reason why we should have to pay 9.99 for all 3 MK when we already MKII. We are just paying for it twice. And this is also known as bait and switch, Since MK II is no longer on the Playstation Store. And, Mortal Kombat & MK3 will not be listed on the store separtely, So we can buy which one we want.

I for one was very excited when this was acconced. Now, Not so much, Reason being..Sony is telling the peole who already own MKII, [DELETED] You. Just shows that You at Sony only care about making money, And not your customers at all. Everyone at Sony need to be fired and replaced my people who actally care about the cutomers (Same goes for the current home team, They are also useless when you need help and they never answer question put to them on blog or forums & still haven’t gave us our mini light back that they stole from us back in feb) Even after Loucst_Star or Glasswalls said back in late feb-early march they are looking into. They are a bunch of liars.

I fell sorry for the people who buy this who have to buy this just to get Mortal Kombat or MK3
