Hi everyone! As we are continuously working toward providing the best gaming and entertainment experience on PlayStation 3, I wanted to give you all a heads up on the following new features and changes coming with the next system software update (v.3.70).
To make things easier for PlayStation Plus subscribers, we’ve added the option to automate two existing features. The [Automatic Download] feature will now be called [Automatic Update] as a result of these new options.
- A new auto upload function for online save data back-up will be added to make it easier to back-up your game save data. Under (Game), select the game for which you want to automatically upload saved data, and then press the Triangle button.
- Also, Trophies will now sync automatically at the timing of Auto Download.
A new recommendation function will be added that enables you to share your recommendations for PlayStation Store items, such as games and videos, with PlayStation Network friends. You will be able to send messages with a store link from the product pages within the PlayStation Store.
Due to the increase in video applications being offered on PS3, we are adding a new category on the XMB called TV/Video Services. This category will include video applications such as Netflix, Hulu PLUS, and VUDU.
- You’ll be able to find and download all of the video applications available on PS3 directly from this new XMB category.
- A folder labeled “My Channels” within this category will allow you to easily access your downloaded applications.
- Any videos downloaded from the PlayStation store will continue to be placed in the existing Video category on the XMB
Two updates for all of you enjoying Blu-ray 3D movies on PS3:
- 3D support will now be available when accessing Java-based special features on Blu-Ray
- DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD HR decoding/bit stream output (or lossless audio) will be supported while playing Blu-ray 3D movies.
- 3D digital photos in MPO format can now be viewed in 3D on the XMB and in the Photo Gallery app.
The 3.70 update will be available soon; additional details will be available after the firmware goes live here. Separately, there will also be a minor PSP system software update (v. 6.60) launching soon.

YEA UPDATE TO WHERE PS2 GAMES ARE PLAYABLE ON PS3
I would really like to see a simple but useful change in the way contacts are handled on PSN.
PSN should use trophy, activity and status data to generate a stream for your friends to view, and comment on.
It’s not that hard to do, and it would make PSN more social by default. If you wanted to go a step further, you could mirror the Twitter feeds of developers within the stream, or include PS Blog posts.
Even if it was just in a web-page accessible from the XMB, it would be good.
It’s really not hard to make a useful social media feed for PSN… hell, if you have a free PSN API or two, I’ll do it for you for free :D
@ Eric071896, Yeah, basically they’re trying to lure in PS PLUS subscribers through basic updates that should have been here at system launch. It’s just sad really, they can’t think of other PLUS bonuses that make sense like the free games and store discounts (which are actually decent). So, they are now resorting to pitiful and scrubby nitpicking cr@p. The trophy syncing still isn’t instantaneous, it’s a stupid workaround that syncs when you set the system to auto-download. Their coders are truly garbage, and they’re making PLUS look less and less appealing to me by these stupid moves, and they’re reminding me more and more of the criminal Xbox Live structure.
They need to work on optimizing the XMB and actually getting everything to flow better before they start making ridiculous stuff like this PLUS exclusives.

Again, who are u to decide what should be standard? Sony does not you, dont like it you have to do without or get an xbox with over priced peripheral, no exclusives and you have to pay just to play online.

You can still sync trophies, is it really a big deal? The more important part of plsu is the cloud saving, some games will not have to external Hard drive

PS+ only thanks PlayStation for screwing the people that cant afford PS+ now we have to update again and we can’t even benefit from this, automatic update sounds OK until your system locks up and fry’s because it never shut down, Oh and don’t expect Sony to reimburse you either.
Here is my suggestion if the update doesn’t pertain to me why do I have to download, this should be optional without disruption of service allow background download of all necessary updates without the waiting so I can turn on my PS3 and start playing immediately online or not believe me this can be done don’t keep screwing your loyal customers this is bad business (PS+ only system updates) a complete waist of HDD space. Thanks again Sony for pushing me closer to Xbox 360.

I’m not trying to be downer and all, I think this new update is great but ever since i’ve downloaded it my playstation 3 isn’t connecting and i keep getting the same error code and it freezes too. And also when i tried signing in on my computer it said it was under maintenance but when i tried it the second time for some reason it worked.

its real simple ill pay for ps plus when theres something worth paying for trophy auto sync is cool but really a must have auto save most games aoready do that. so its kind of a lame update still free so im not to upset about it as long as we keep getting them for free and online play is free im cool
@9 I agree. I rather cross game chat that any of this. Also idk if this auto update thing works cause I’ve never noticed my ps3 turning on by itself but i do like the idea of auto syncing. Auto saving to online storage doesn’t really seem that helpful though. Cross game chat sure does though. And if sony can’t do cross game chat for some reason they should at least put it in a blog so we can stop bugging you guys about how much we want it :]
@masterofpuppetz: and you are simply a broken record. That last post of your is, word for word, a copy/paste of one you made a few pages back. It doesn’t add to the argument in any way whatsoever. It also doesn’t help your case when you call us clueless, self-entitled children. There is nothing self-entitled about not wanting to pay what should be a BASIC function of our favorite gaming console.
I think I’m allowed to complain a bit considering that the free feature set Sony provided at first was one of the biggest reason’s I purchased my PS3 and I now own two PS3 systems which I have worked very hard to acquire, no I don’t see the value in getting PS+ yet the games offered for free are mostly junk and the discounted games well your paying for those through your PS+ subscription, like they say nothing is free in this world you’ll’ pay for it one way or another. I guess Sony got one on me I just knew PSN wouldn’t be free forever at least without changing features making it subscription only to PS+ subscribers, (it’s not that bad yet but give it time you will get annoyed).
I had a nice scare after the fw installed and the system rebooted….no xmb and a system crash that forced me to unplug the ps3 to get it to shut off. Yay?
And as far as the plus stuff goes, I can’t justify paying for it at the moment. I’ve yet to see anything in all these months that would make me want to go out and buy it.
As for these features being plus only…it’s a great way to alienate the people without plus, the people who don’t want it, the people who can’t afford it. It’s just like the facebook and twitter syndrome. Do everything there so people who don’t want accounts, don’t want to register, or can’t…can’t be a part of the “community.”

I’m definitely not complaining I don’t get these features. Cause I would much rather have REAL auto-syncing trophies. Ones that sync as soon as you get them and a psn id card that syncs automatically too. Won’t even bring up the lack of cross game chat, the party system, and the ability to change your psn name. Not to mention the lack of ps1 games like the Japanese store has, the ability to play ps2 games, and a whole slew of other things.
I really don’t get why this stuff has to be paid for. Why don’t you just come out and say psn is slowly making it’s way to being a paid service so we can move on? And then maybe, just maybe we can get the features we want.

561 No, I DONT care about ANY of these features, so ZERO need for me subscribe. Yet I STILL have to download this stuff that I cant and wont use. Free, yes, but a useless waste for those who dont pay to use it.
Whats next, only PS plus members can save to a USB drive too? Only Plus members can charge a controller while playing?
And with this all-lmportant? cross game chat, does that mean evryone in game has to hear YOUR side of the conversation youre having out of game? Or you cant chat ingame with it enabled? So out of game chat is more important than the people youre actually playing with? Or you can press a button and switch between? Sounds like youre mostly playing CHAT, not a game at that point. Yay. Would you cancel your cellphone and skype then?

Trully that is the fact with almost every one of them. Self righteous over zealous drones. Ready to die for whatever is shoved infront of them. So, long as it is “shiny” and/or “sparkles” these loyal pigeons flock at every whim of their master.Pitiful to say the least. Though I don’t know what is worse to be honest. Their lack of ability to argue or their drooling maws that hang open as they stare blindly at the latest “shiny” distraction shoved by Sony.
If you have not noticed everyone. All they can do, is grasp at straws when they make “wild” accusations. Don’t let them get to you. Just ignore them. Better to leave them rotting in some basement. They deserve no, sympathy much less our attention. All they do, is grovel and enable unethical behavior, and as far as they are concerned; Sony can do no, harm.
I don’t hate this update, I’m just slightly disappointed that a feature like auto-sync is being limited to paid members. Then again, you guys HAVE to offer them more because they’re the ones who are paying. It’s such a double edged sword.
One thing I really don’t understand is why you’ve implemented the feature in such a backwards way. It’s quicker for people just to update their profile manual rather than wait hours for the auto-download feature to do it. Why not simply just update our account instantly whenever we earn a trophy?

Please implement this feature for all the other sections of the XMB as well (Music, Video, Game and trophy information).
If sony was so honest in its treatment of its paying customers why do they censor and delete those same customers real and very vaild complaints while they’re trolls continue to attack and harass us all unchecked?
Sony you’ve put yourselves in a very risky situation. It doesn’t take much observation to realize your blatant scams perpetrated against the people who keep you employed won’t end well for you. Business 101 should be telling you that without customers you have no business. To continually drive all of your paying customers away with forced updates and blatant cash grabs won’t win you any prizes at the pink slip party thats inevetible if you continue down the path your on.
The point is your trollboys don’t keep you in business, nor do shareholders, marketing lackies or your brigade of thoughtless Yes Men. Your priority should be your customers, cause without us you wont stay in business.

Rorek, please stop insulting Plus members. It’s completely uncalled for and rude. I subscribed to Plus because it sounded interesting and so far, I’ve been pleased with it. I like what I’ve gotten for free and I like what I’ve gotten at discount pricing. That doesn’t make me a bad person. There are a lot of things about Sony and the PSN I haven’t been happy with lately so I don’t appreciate being called a mindless, self-righteous overzealous drone.

The additional Plus features are appreciated. I look forward to when the Plus subscription truly makes my PS3 experience feel like an enhanced version of the free service.
I like any attempt at refining the XMB. The operating system is a streamlined way to access programs, but the more that becomes available, the more cluttered it gets. Although I think a better option to a new category in the XMB would be to just put the contents in a “TV and Video Services” folder within the Video category. Next up: sub-folders in the Games category! Let me create one sub-folder, so I can better organize my PSN games.
I have a suggestion for the “recommended” addition to the PlayStation Store. Bring the PlayStation Rewards program back to beta, and simplify it to the following:
– trophy level
– PlayStation Store ratings
– PlayStation Store recommendations
Those three things would affect your reward status, earning you additional content.
I dig the auto save thing, and the trophy sync is cool (although i do like to watch the upload myself when I get a platinum and like to see it updated). The “tv” function seems like clutter to me. it worked nicely under the “movie” tab. unless, of course, youre planning to have the PS3 become a tivo-like entity, then I’m all for it.
I dont even know what to say about the new update. There is nothing good except the automatic trophies, and you have to have PLUS for it.
What we need is:
A completely new XMB..
A system where you can use your own pictures as your avatar..
And cross game voice chat..
Im sure EVERYONE would be happy enough just getting those..

Tired of this PS+ exclusive crap. Come one, Trophy Synching? That should be free to everybody! Do I have to subscribe to PS+ just to listen to my music on my PS3, to use the web browser, or perhaps to use my washing machine?

Another thing, why did they have to add another movie column on the XMB? Couldn’t they simply put the Netflix and MyChannel under the regular Movies column?
The XMB is already stupid-looking and outdated. Now, they’re just adding on to the over cluttered design. They really do need to pay some real programmers and designers to get this stuff done right.

Why cant Sony just give us Cross Game Chat or something. these are updates that should have been on the ps3 when it first came out.

LAZY LAZY UPDATE ERIC!!! I am usually the first to defend Sony on their updates. But this one is pure garbage! Test the damn software before releasing it. Launch 60GB machine here, the new TV/Video Services Tab is crap. Why listen to little kids about dumb features. Obviously by adding another category to the XMB has used more of the depleted RAM available. When checking in-game XMB during a video it takes an extra 3 seconds to get back to the video. I wonder how much slower in game this junk is. That category is redundant as hell! Programmers are supposed to go for the “BIG ZERO”! Streamline everything! Designers obviously pushed this crap through. TV Services has a folder with Netflix, MLBTV, NHL GameCenter. Then right below this folder are all three apps again. Why have the folder and the uncategorized apps? One or the other. It is like having 18 of the same shortcuts on your desktop. It is cluttered, slow, and ugly. You think I’m upset about just the aesthetics? HAH!
PS3 MEdia Server no longer finds the PS3, Windows Media Center no longer finds the PS3, the PS3 no longer finds any upnp devices. You broke my video streaming! Either include a Recovery option to fall back to the last stable firmware, ie. previous version without having to do a system restore. OR; fast track a 3.71 fix ASAP! I am not going to jump through hoops to get this to work by calling tech support. Get it done!
