The Drop: Week of August 8th 2011 New Releases

The PlayStation Network continues its summer dominance this week on The Drop. Take out The Jackal when the PS3 first-person shooter FarCry 2 joins PSN’s digital library of full-length PS3 games. Demos are also strong this week: You can try out Madden NFL 12 and Driver: San Francisco this week on PSN.

PlayStation Network

Far Cry 2 — Caught between two rival factions in war-torn Africa, you are sent to take out “The Jackal”, a mysterious character who has rekindled the conflict between the warlords, jeopardizing thousands of lives. In order to fulfil your mission you will have to play the factions against each other, identify and exploit their weaknesses, and neutralise their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force.

Madden NFL 12 — Madden NFL 12 continues the rich tradition of the storied franchise by bringing fans closer to the NFL than ever before. Featuring all 32 teams, stadiums, and all your favorite players in the league, Madden NFL 12 is True to the Game. All-new collision system, advanced defensive A.I. enhancements highlight the 2012 edition’s improved feature set, with Custom Playbooks also added provide a more authentic gameplay experience. Franchise mode includes more than 100 new features and enhancements, while Superstar mode now allows fans to control the growth of their superstar with an all-new progression system.

Dynamic Player Performance creates unprecedented realism as a player’s skills and confidence will rise and fall based on his performance throughout a game or in Franchise mode, just like the real NFL. No two players will play the same in Madden NFL 12. Further adding to the experience, Online Communities will provide an all-new way for Madden NFL gamers to meet and play, and Madden NFL Ultimate Team continues to offer the perfect combination of Madden NFL Football, fantasy football, and trading cards.

Driver: San Francisco — With crime lord Charles Jericho now on the loose San Francisco faces a terrible threat. Only one man can stand against him. He has driven the streets of a hundred cities, spent his whole life putting criminals behind bars. But to take Jericho down, there can be no turning back, and he knows that this may very well be his last ride. His name is John Tanner. He is the Driver.

Driver: San Francisco marks the return of the blockbuster driving franchise. Gamers play John Tanner, a hardened detective involved in a relentless manhunt throughout the City by the Bay. Thanks to a groundbreaking gameplay feature, players can now seamlessly shift between more than a hundred licensed vehicles, keeping them constantly in the heart of the action. With its timeless atmosphere, unique car handling and renewed playability, Driver: San Francisco offers the free-roaming, classic, cinematic car chase experience.

  • Remember people, on this week there is a Final Fantsy Type-0 Japanese Demo.

  • I hope I finally can get my Cloud avatar this week….. and does anyone else think it would be cool if they hid final fantasy symbol avatars like ff7 comet or ff8 Squall holding Rinoa or ff9 crystal cause I think those would be cool too

  • I truly Love you PSN. But seriously….this weeks Drop is pitiful. This isnt even a Drop, this is more like a nasty fall.

  • Last week they posted a weak drop but I think they had a pretty strong lineup. Of course this isn’t all that they are having, they list the major ones.

    Last week had:

Dragon Age Origins on PSN(Great update, except 90% of the people have it on disk already, still really good to have on the hard drive)
Galaga Legions DX(If it’s like Pac Man, it’s going to be great)
    Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team
Crash Commando(Free with Playstation Plus, interesting 3PS)
    Destruction Derby for PS1/PSP
A few mini’s nobody cares about
    Farm Frenzy discounted.
All Resident Evil 5 DLC is 50% off
Comet Crash is still 2.99(But if you were an early PSN subscriber, you got it free)

Shapo may of been a fun mini, not sure.

Drop also does not list the Freddy Krueger DLC for Mortal Kombat, which is scheduled for this Tuesday.

  • testing post…

  • Hillarious.

  • I love it when people complain about The Drop. Do you honestly expect something huge and amazing to be released every single week throughout the year? Educate yourself, please. Then you have the people who think the entire post should be skipped just because they don’t like the content being released. Come on, guys! Making the community look like ignorant beggars. If you don’t like the content, that’s fine, but don’t post ridiculous comments every chance you get. It’s annoying!

That aside, I’m looking forward to the Madden and Driver demos.

  • hope i get my Cloud avatar this week!

  • It is a really weak drop, but I’m glad to hear that a Driver: San Francisco demo is coming. I actually enjoyed part 3, and though I know this one won’t have any on foot segments… thats actually somethimg I’m enjoying about this new one. Still, I’m sketchy about jumping from one car to another like a ghost. I also like the idea of downloading Far Cry 2. I never got to finish it so this might be my chance at doing so. I thought it was a good game.

  • @55

No i dont expect every Drop/Update to be a Hit but seeing as how for people like me (with only a Psp Go) we only have this to look forward to for anything related to the psp. rarely does anything psp related gets into the update for unknown reasons.
I wold think that since the Vita is coming Sony would be up in arms getting as much psp (and maybe ps1) games so people who buy a Vita that may have never bought a psp can play them.

All im saying is had this been the first couple of weeks for psp update i would let this slide, but these types of updates have been going on for years. things like this dont need to be happening anymore. Again not every update should be a hit, but it shouldnt be as dead as this. i think the only recent psp update we got was for tactics, and before that was well before the attack that happen on the psn.

  • @55 there hasnt been a great week for some time. I see what you mean, people griping every week. I think one great week will tide us until the next great one.

  • LMAO….. The Drop should do exactly what it’s name says, Drop out of the picture.

The sad part is this is the kind of wasteful spending SCEA uses its money on. Paying people to print up crap like this.

The Drop is useless. You might as well just DROP this……

  • This is awful. I always looked forward to “The Drop” on Sundays. When it had useful info like what was gonna be on sale, what was new and what had price drops. This is one of the worst things Sony has done. Fix it please because this sucks.

  • It must be kinda fun to squeeze so much out of so little when writing the opening paragraphs of these weak drops =P

  • If anyone is looking for news on PS1 games, BoF 4 is confirmed for next Tuesday so there’s that.

  • Small drop, but hey its better than nothing.

  • Nothing of interest but it is true it can’t be good all the time. The last few months have been good for me though with Borderlands/Burnout Paradise for cheap so I don’t mind.

  • Summer dominance, haha, good one. Whoever heads the PSN Store department should be replaced asap.

  • OF DRAGOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Some people still fail to realize that The Drop is not the complete update for the week. It’s just part of what they’re releasing on Tuesday. When the update comes, then feel free to complain.

  • madden sucks and also farcry sucked. but ive been looking forward to driver. so this week if thats all thats good coming out im still happy. plus im still playing my prince of persia trilogy so until i beat all 3 of those and the other 2 prince of persias and my bioshock 1 and 2. i wont be buying no more games. but the demo gives me a chance to change it up.

  • ok grazie

  • No need to cry about one lackluster week.. get a grip kids

  • I’m happy with the Driver demo. Thank you for posting the drop!

  • Don’t forget that most of tomorrows update is going to revolve around the “PLAY” promotion where you can pre-order a bunch of PSN games. Honestly, we just got LIMBO and a bunch of new stuff, and people still complain. Even during what is known as the “Summer gaming drought” (which is exactly why these PLAY/Summer of Arcade promotions take place), people will complain.

I won’t be doing the promotion since I’m betting that SF3: Online will have Capcom DRM. Also, I have PS+ until like 2013, so at least one of these games will be free (or heavily discounted) by then.

Thanks again Rey, you’re the business.

  • I can’t believe the lack of games during the summer! I sure hope more games get released later this year. Oh wait, this is what happens every year.
Well then, I’m going to hope for imported PS1 games, and I will ignore all the great PSN games that have come out recently because they do nothing to appease my consumer needs.

  • @55 Nobody expect some ridiculous/amazing Drop handed down by the gods, but this doesn’t even constitute a post. It 1 game that you can get a physical copy brand new for what is likely cheaper and 2 demos. The Drop is supposed to get you all psyched up for Tuesday and lately (especially this week) it’s been doing just the opposite. Yes, Tuesday we’ll see more than this, but that’s mostly DLC, Themes, and Avatars since they only post games on The Drop. So many games are sitting on the backburner just waiting to be released (yes I know there’s probably some complications of some sort), yet this Drop may as well have said, “See you next week…maybe” and that’s it.

  • add Bad Company 1 to that list to please

  • No, that is not all is coming out on Tuesday, I think there is more :)

  • @81 because this week is the only lackluster week psn has ever had right?

I’m sorry but i think its pathetic at how long psn has come and we still have updates like this. especially for psp users. we rarely get anything to begin with and for people like me who have a Go we have to look up to these updates since its the only way we cna get games on our psp Yet Sony refuses to help.

  • @78, So glad you pointed that out, so i didn’t have to <3

  • For all those that keep asking or hoping Parasite Eve 2 comes up, it would mostlikely have more effect to push and comment Square Enix than PSN’s Blog. I put it everyday on their facebook page.

  • Bad Drop
buuuuuuut a good week for psp users and finalfantasy lovers…
this weeks SE will give us the Demo of Final Fantasy Type 0 (aka FF Agito XIII)

  • Castlevania HD is coming to ps3? Yes….. another game i shouldn’t have bothered getting for 360. Sigh. But i am very happy the ps3 is getting it even if it is very late lol. Just don’t make the DLC maps stupidly expensive like they are on XBLA. Not paying 5 dollars for 1 level… Also more games need to come out in the summer. Why aren’t you guys tapping on the market strategy that games get played the most during the summer? It’s when kids have the most time!

  • @mixedkidbx They’re too busy wasting money on something as useless and overdone as that dose of “reality” crap called The Tester -_-

  • @Mattsta001 I seriously thought he was being sarcastic when he wrote that “summer dominance” line

  • Is this a joke? @Sevyne is entirely correct; why bother with a drop unless you’re making a joke. I’m betting Farcry 2 will sell for $40 since typical download games go for $15. I bought the game brand new for $10 in late 2009. Here’s a tip for everyone: Farcry 2 is $18 brand new/sealed at Amazon. Full price is ridiculous as was pointed out in an earlier mention; I’ll never be a believer in buying disc based games as a download. Completely stupid considering Farcry 2’s age – file size – trade in option & redundancy.

  • PS1games???? Hell why dont you put out a backward compatability patch so that i can enjoy awesome collection of PS2 games like ssx series and many other titles. tired of having to re-rig my ps2 to play games that i can barely get to read on the ps2 console. work on that one day. or hey if you are going to release old ps1 titles why not bring back Nightmare Creatures or I.Q.? begining titles like that were so good even tho they needed work. do something more productive besides bringing us FC2, which btw was pretty crappy from the get go.

  • sony should add duke nukem forever on playstaiton store, since it aint really selling on disc

  • I like Far Cry 2 but, I would really like to see some better content than this….
