UNCHARTED 3 on the 3D Gaming Display

Affordable 3D gaming was a reoccurring theme at this year’s PlayStation E3 keynote, whether it was the announcement of PlayStation’s upcoming 3D Gaming Display and redesigned 3D glasses. But even with more sophisticated and affordable 3D technology, we need 3D games to play and 3D movies to watch. That’s where this list comes in: I’ve collected almost every piece of stereoscopic 3D-capable PS3 content here, from Blu-ray to PSN. If I missed a game, let me know in the comments!

      SCEA has only announced a 24” model of the 3D Gaming Display thus far, but of course there are larger 3D Sony Bravias to choose from as well.

    Contrary to the myth propgated by sony 3D isn’t expensive. yes I’ve seen the sony party line disguised as “comment” claming ridiculous prices for 3D yet when I look in retailers facts don’t bear it out. 3D is just an overpriced gimmick. Theres a reason its failed at every attempt to “introduce” it since the 50’s. Theres also a reason its never caught on and the attempts to bring it back have been absent for more than 2 decades until past 2 years. It’s just another variation of the same fake 3D effects as before. Lets face it, 3D introduces some really big hits in area of resolution and frame rate and is still almost entirely based on parralax shifting 2D objects. No amount of marketing propoganda will change those facts. It only serves to make those making such claims look foolish as anyone with a modicem of electronics engineering knowledge could rip the excuses apart in seconds.

    Instead how about Sony focus on some real improvements on their product line instead? The blog.share is full of ideas, some quite good, and all completely ignored since blog.share was opened. Last time I looked there was 1 idea in action out of thousands. Lame Sony, really really lame. You can do better and you should.

      3D isn’t for everyone, but the technology and implementations are improving with every new game. Have you tried MotorStorm Apocalypse or Mortal Kombat in 3D? Both are quite impressive.

      As for Share, we regularly use it as a resource internally at the company. It’s important! Thanks for your thoughts.

    Didn’t Arkham Asylum get a 3D GOTY edition?

    What about upcoming games like Battlefield 3, MW3, Arkham City, Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, Bioshock Infinite, Starhawk, etc? Has 3D been confirmed for any of those?

    I know if ME3 was in 3D, that would probably give me the extra push to switch over.

    Also did they ever announce a release date for that upcoming affordable 3DTV? I’m assuming it’s after Resistance 3 comes out…

      Arkham Asylum’s 3D is the “old-fashioned” red-and-blue lens anaglyphic mode. We’re limiting the games to the new-school stereoscopic 3D mode, which has tons of advantages over anaglyphic.

    First off, about the “hit” to the resolution, the Sony PS TV is a 24″ TV has a 1080P Res.
    That is already overkill for a screen that size unless you sit 2′ from the screen.
    The hit to resolution doesn’t exist using active shutter glasses, UNLESS the game needs to run in a lower res to save the framerate. It also has a 120hz refresh rate.

    So, a 24″ TV with 1080P, and a 120hz refresh rate that comes with a $60 game, at the price of $500 is a reasonable price. Sony’s TVs are rather pricey, so the 3D is almost thrown in for free. Adjust the 3D effect on a 3D TV to fit your viewing pleasure. Better yet, TURN IT OFF! The TV has great specs (120hz), and will look great with 3D turned off.

    Uncharted 3 in 3D is a very tempting thing to make me want 3D, but my money is going towards the Vita. LOL

    3D is nice and all, but what compromises are we making to game performance to have a feature none of us can use? Naughty Dog acts like split screen was a result of this 3D tech and as many of us know that causes a graphical hit. I think I’d rather have better eye candy than a feature I can’t appreciate even if I had a 3D TV.

    Yes deathspear I call it as it is in reality not marketing fanboy land. What I did fail to mention is it came far too soon on the heels of us all adopting HDtv’s. What people forget too easily is HDtv didn’t sprout fully formed overnight. The industry was in discussions and planning of HD back in the early 1990’s with 2 different formats called idtv (improved definition) and edtv (enhanced definition) and our current HD is an extension of EDtv. Luckily it evolved into HDtv before it hit the market. 3D on the other hand isn’t well thought out at all. And lets be completely honest here HD programming has been slow in coming and still commands a stiff increase in premium pricing. Blu-rays have come down in price on older movies but anything new either on disc or pay services is a lot more costly. And as we’ve all seen 3D content is even more costly for the end user, namely us. Thats not even mentioning the complete and utter lack of content, beyond a short list of PS3 games theres very little in the way of 3D blu ray movies and virtually nothing in the way of 3D broadcasting yet. In reality its only a “win” for sonys bank balance not for the people saddled with it.

    Really onepiece anime? please, dont bother quoting specs, no game will run at a full 120hz at 1080p, that fiction exist only in your mind, not in reality, and no $500 for a tv that size is no bargain by any stretch of the imagination.     If anyone has played the Uncharted 3 beta, you will realize not only are the graphics BETTER than Uncharted 2, but it is rendering more character models online and STILL looks better than Uncharted 2. The biggest flaw I see in the graphics is that the trees are still rendered as a 2D model as a flat plane. But you really only notice that if you are staring at the trees before you get shot.

    Lets not forget that a 22″ Sony 720P 60Hz TV is $270, which is not only smaller, lower res, lower frame rate, and doesn’t support the 2 player splitscreen feature. Also, sell Resistance for $50, and now that TV only cost $450.

    Also, about no game running in 120hz, how about movies? Also, the hz is processed by the TV, NOT by the game or PS3. Wipeout HD runs at a fast framerate while in 1080P also.

    There is a game on the ps3 that runs at 120 Hz…. Super Stardust HD does. It runs at 60 frames per second on each eye in 3D

    I don’t own a 3DTV, but have had plenty of opportunity to try out the 3D of the games I own that support it. My experience was unchanged…. actually it was changed a little. I was more annoyed by the technology that benefited by it. My friend has gotten to the point that he has given up on whipping out the 3D glasses due to my rather lethargic response to it and constant stating “Let’s not fuss with that and play like we use too”. I’m sorry to say this, but 3D is a bust. Even with Zelda Ocarina of Time on my 3DS I don’t see any practical usage in it. I’ve found it to be more of a burden than a benefit.

    Only games that really seem to show any kind of extra immersion from it is racing games like GT5. I felt Killzone 3 benefited more from the sharp shooter and Move (though I have my complaints as noted in the past) than anything the 3D technology has done for me. I have to wonder if the visuals of KZ3 were compromised because of 3D as the game lacked something visually from KZ2 that still haunts me today.

      Thanks for the feedback. I think it depends on the game and how the tech is used. I was quite impressed by the 3D implementation in Mortal Kombat and MotorStorm Apocalypse.

    @ pirate harlock, we all know you don’t have a 3D tv, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it. If we (the end user) choose to enjoy the first generation of 3D gaming/sports/movies, then that is our own prerogative! And enjoy it I do. and for a new 3d tv to be out for under $600, that is a very reasonable entry fee for 3D content. Granted the content is slowly becoming greater, but as you said, same thing occurred with HD. If you build it, they will come…Soon enough there will be glasses free technology, but the pop-out effect will not be there, it will be a depth effect. A disneyland style 3D pop-out effect is an expensive tech. to mass produce I reckon too. If the money is there though, the tech will get better and consumers buying 3D now will only help to make 3D better, sooner. I’m not mad either.

    I think that in some ways the games could look better because if the game is in 3D the PS3 must render the images twice for each eye, so a lot of processing power goes there. I know that right now Uncharted 3 looks better than 2, even with the 3D implemented, but imagine how crazy it would look without the 3D and using all the processing power to enhance the graphics.

    Well, as long as the games get better graphics for us “2D TV owners” I will not say crap things about 3D since I haven´t try it yet.

    R#23 I have played the U3 Beta, unless the U3 single player is leaps and bounds better then the game hasn’t improved to much over U2. I say there were compromises made considering Naughty Dog flaunted the PS3 as still having unlocked potential. I’m a big Uncharted fan and love the work Naughty Dog has done with the series, but even with U3 I still feel things aren’t progressing to embrace the PS3’s performance to show that it is as powerful as it really is. None of us asked for 3D, but Sony gave it to us anyway. Often times getting something extra you didn’t know you wanted is great. However it seems it is coming at the cost of seeing the technology used to resolve other issues instead we’re being providing with Split Screen Co-op and 3D. I can’t complain about the Co-op its a nice edition, but if the 3D has limited any factor of the games then I don’t want it. Killzone 2 was a masterpiece of visuals, what happened with killzone 3? Uncharted 2 was a pinnacle of the PS3’s performance and the type of experience it could deliver by leveraging the PS3’s power to delivery graphics that would draw us in. Instead of taking it a step further its being spent on stabilizing the visuals at U2 quality in order to deliver 3D.

      Remember that it’s also the multiplayer mode, where a good amount of processing is going towards networking. The best visuals you’ll see in a game are in the SP, so stay tuned.

    I don’t, I rather liked the beta after the patch. Character models seemed to have the largest improvement in Uncharted 3, the game mechanics are quite different, but I like them. Having a hardcore mode with no boosters is great, and the power plays online seem like a good idea. Not sure if I like the sprinting system though.

    Ya I’ve read that article. I’m regular here. When I’m not coding or fixing servers at work, or preping for Graduate School at FIEA I’m here or on my PS3. I’m guessing only time will tell, but boasting an improvement because of 3D doesn’t make the normal development process look that great. Makes me wonder at the number of compromises were being made before and how good things could be had Naughty Dog spent that effort on just making the game look better. Maybe they are drawing conclusions during development they wouldn’t have ordinarily had come to due to 3D, but I’m not seeing evidence of that. I’m just seeing that “oh frame rate has improved” which leads me to ask “what was wrong with the frame rate before?” that really doesn’t help me understand. Biggest thing I’ve seen from Naughty dog is their addressing of things like draw distances and other technologies. Frame Rate could have been improved without 3D among other things.

    Anyway lets hope I get that dawning moment that changes everything, but at present I still feel like this is a wasted effort. Especially since most of us can’t use this technology.

    Not really sure it it’s even worth mentioning but the Thor video game is in 3D. The 3D effects were pretty much the only thing I enjoyed in that game.

    I have no issue with the game play improvements made to Uncharted 3. I think they are awesome and they get me excited for the final product. None of that is impacted by 3D or really has anything to do with 3D for that matter.

    Visually i don’t see much of an improvement between U2 and U3’s online visuals. There is more detail here and there which is a plus. Some interesting things they are trying with the lighting effects which a few people are complaining about (enforce ocular adjustment via shaders). The patch seemed to fix some texturing issues, maybe just me, but they don’t seem as fuzzy as they did back on tuesday. Which in my opinion if that was end product work would have been listed as a downgrade from U2. I have to ask though, don’t you feel they could have taken it further and had done more if time on 3D wasn’t put into play?

    Uncharted 3 is going to be a beautiful and amazing game at release, probably Game of the Year even with stiff competition from the likes of Deus Ex and Gears of War 3. In the end I’m going to be stuck wondering what they could have done as 3D isn’t going to win them that award even if (and shouldn’t be) their objective. at What cost is the question.

    Before the update, Uncharted 3 seemed to have a 3D compromise. It seemed muddier in 3D with bland textures. After the update though, it’s easily better then the 2D version. I can honestly say I don’t want to go back to 2D. I seems to me that as mentioned above, people for some reason believe a game is compromised when made for 3D when in reality it not only ENFORCES a 60 fps ability in 2D single player… but it enforces a stable 3D rendering engine. There is no loose loose situation here. As a matter of fact, it forces devs to build better engines.

    As an owner of a 46” Sony BRAVIA, I thank you Sid for refreshing my memory on all the 3D games and movies :) 3D gaming is fun and it definitely immerses you into the game’s universe. I can’t wait to see Kratos ripping enemies limb from limb in The God of War: Origins Collection in 3D!

    Stop questioning 3D for what you believe to be capping the game. If you think about it, split screen does the exact same thing that 3D does. Would you prefer Uncharted 3 to lack split screen support and provoking the claim that we no longer have split screen games? The 3D feature just feeds off of this tech in a very light sense.

      Yes, exactly. You’ll notice a correlation between games that support splitscreen and 3D; they are not the same thing but are related in some cases, technology-wise.

    3D isn’t a necessity, but it is a nice effect depending on how it is used. A lot of people get discouraged by demos at your local Mall, Best Buy, ect. Some games/movies throw a 3D sticker on the box and call it 3D. The other crowd actually create the game around the thought of 3D, that doesn’t mean your 2D is ruined, it just enhances your experience if you do have 3D.

    I’ve played SOCOM 4 3D was eh, never bother with 3D unless its the White Tiger level which is nice in 3D. Killzone 3 in 3D was very impressive, one of the best I’ve seen. Motorstorm Apocalypse is also up there with impressive 3D. Uncharted 3 Beta in 3D is pretty good in 3D but I know it will be better in Story mode. The trailers I’ve seen from the PS Store are looking good in 3D so far.

    I can’t say it’s worth the price of having a 3D TV. They are expensive, tho you can find some really good deals. Eventually they’ll go cheaper. Problem is there’s only a few games that really utilize 3D, most are just “gimmicky”.
    I support the 3D push as long as Sony keeps ’em coming. (Of course not the cheesy “gimmicky” 3D)

      Yeah, agreed, it’s all in the execution. And you’ll definitely see 3D TVs becoming more and more affordable. I wouldn’t be surprised to see all/most TVs come with 3D in a few years. It could easily become a standard feature.

    I believe that The House of The Dead: Overkill: Extended Cut (which is coming out in late October) is going to be 3D compatible.

    You guys realize that there is a 32″ 3D Vizio on Amazon for $478 right? Who wants to talk about 3D being too expensive now

    The Thor game, like someone mentioned, the Green Lantern game, and the upcoming Captain America game! I’m definitely buying all three when the go a little cheaper, for pretty much the 3D experience alone!
    Also, the Sonic Generations demo up in the store this week was in 3D. I didnt even know that was in the owrks, and the game is definitely on my radar! Playing a classic sidescroll with the 3D effects was as great as I alwasy dreamed it would be.

    Oh, I also forgot to mention that Bioshock Infinite was confirmed for 3D support in an interview after the E3 Move support announcement. You may want to add that to the list.
