Service Restoration Update

333 0

As you may know, we’ve begun the process of restoring the service through internal testing of the new system. We’re still working to confirm the security of the network infrastructure, as well as working with a variety of outside entities to confirm with them of the security of the system. Verifying the system security is vital for the process of restoration. Additional comprehensive system checks and testing are still required, and we must complete that process before bringing the systems online.

As you’ve heard us say, our utmost priorities are the security of the network and ensuring your data is safe. We won’t restore the services until we can test the system’s strength in these respects.

When we held the press conference in Japan last week, based on what we knew, we expected to have the services online within a week. We were unaware of the extent of the attack on Sony Online Entertainment servers, and we are taking this opportunity to conduct further testing of the incredibly complex system. We know many of you are wanting to play games online, chat with your friends and enjoy all of the services PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have to offer, and trust me when I say we’re doing everything we can to make it happen. We will update you with more information as soon as we have it. We apologize for the delay and inconvenience of this network outage.

  • OK! Now I think we are being punked!! What happened to the on-line will be up with a week………

  • Keep up the good work sony.

  • and im throwing a chat room welcome back party so add me at sped99

  • Unless you tell us a date on when it’s coming back. Please stop giving us pointless updates repeating the same thing you said on the last comment.

  • * Update

  • yellowjacket486

wow, an update on past updates.

  • Arrrrggggh I was hoping that the PSN would be back up today! We are missing a COD Double XP Weekend! Hopefully they give PS3 a special weekend for this.

  • oh…

    patience running low
    updates are getting old

it will all be good when PSN gets back online. in the meantime is whatever

  • Sony is really starting to sound like a broken record with their “PSN will be up and running within a week”

  • Does this mean this weekend it’ll be up? Around then? Even a guesstimate on when it’ll be back? Anything?

  • I have no clue what this update is getting at?….So, delayed is it?…What the hell…Speak clearly Sony.

  • IconikBlo0dM0n3y

I say take your time, don’t put PSN back up to shut the people up complaining about it being down. Don’t put it back up until it’s where you want it to be.

  • You have until May 15th, thats when the Gears of War 3 beta finishes then i will actually get withdrawalls if uncharted mp is not back up :)

Give us cross game chat too!

  • And to think, if you would have just updated apache and put a firewall on. This would all not have happened. For-shame!

  • Well what about the services I’m paying for like MLB, NHL, and Hulu. Hulu gave me an extra week, however, this post seems like it could be longer than expected. How are you going to fix that? And moreover, if you guys would of updated your security on your servers in the first place and beef up protection when you knew the hackers were coming after you instead of laying off 300 people we wouldn’t be here right now. Sony, you actually stated that you knew of the vulnerability but didn’t believe it. How stupid and arrogant of you. This only goes to show that your company leadership in incompetent and I hope the share holders vote Stringer out along with Kaz and get someone with a clue. Apache is an open source server softer and firewalls running linux can be free as well.

  • Sure there are games I can’t play online, but what about the games I purchased and can’t download or play because the PSN is down. To me this is just ludicrous that I have to be signed into PSN to use a subscription that I pay for outside of PSN like Hulu or Netflix. Its just asinine that having over 100 million accounts between PSN and SOE is so easily compromised and that you left your old back up data on a server. And its just plain bull that this whole thing has happened. I blame the hackers, but Sony you pissed off the hackers in the first place by removing the other OS option. And just to clarify people weren’t using the other os feature to bread DRM, because it was running as a virtual server. I think this option cost more to maintain and was easier to take it out. Instead, you helped cause this situation but not protecting my data to the best of your ability and pissing off your customers. In the end how much is that one option going to cost your company and the share holders? Instead, build a better DRM system instead of suing people or actually hire them to protect your IP.

  • hahahaha i knew it wouldn’t be up this week

  • I am canceling my mlb.tv I wanted my baseball ,Hope we get it up and running Way better than before, New XMB new everything. lol

  • Anyone else notice that this post is below the one from yesterday and isn’t featured at the top of the page even though its the newest?

  • this is killing sony’s reputation in the gaming industry…and they wonder why xbox is more popular. if i had known sony was gonna do this i woulda got an xbox and dealt with an inferior system u have to pay for online on. sony is going to be screwed big time for future sales as well as when they do a next generation console. playstation almost caught a break when they got steam and valve announced that the ps3 version of portal 2 was the best for consoles and we cant play online. why would anyone buy it now? this is getting ridiculous!

  • s1mpl3______j4ck

    I’m P.Od now..
Netflix wont work without signing in anymore!!!
    Sony. Hurry up.

  • This is getting so annoying. Sony, if you are going to say PSN is going to be back up within the week, we expected it within the week. I think Playstation users have been more than patient with this whole entire ordeal but this is getting ridiculous. Like others say, its not even the abandonment of online gaming but the services that are accessed using our playstation login such as hulu and netflix which are rotting because we cant login.

If an ETA is going to be set, make sure that it follows through. Unless Sony is scared of the supposed attack this weekend rumor that is goin around, I cant understand why we cant have PSN back up this weekend. If anything, just the ability to login to our accounts would be nice.

  • Thanks for the update! Since I don’t want to connect again to PSN and put my Credit Card on it unless you guys are sure on its security (and it seems you are working on that), I’m ok with extensive tests. Take your time, Sony!

  • Thanks again for the update, and I figured the Week estimate would be a bit longer. As an IT system admin I fully understand that things don’t always go according to schedule when you are dealing with testing of various systems.

Well the week isn’t over till Midnight tomorrow, so maybe we’ll get lucky! ;-) At any rate, security over speed.

  • You guys better do something nice for your developers that are getting screwed as well. I feel horrible in particular for Capy Games who just released the AMAZING “Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes” after a long time of hard work and polishing, only to have PSN go down the week after its release. Can’t imagine how disappointed they must be that it’s only available to purchase and play online for XBLA right now.

Quit apologizing, get this stuff back up and running not only for your own reputation, but for the many other companies who put faith in your services and are being financially affected.

  • Fine with me… just means I have time to focus on the campaigns of my games for once.

  • A little to late now, but if you be-friend me on Live, let me know your a PSN refugee. I get alot of requests when play Blops and those I usually ignore. I’ll be picking up a brand new mic this week as my cheap one got stepped on. Still really looking forward to PSN coming back online, I know some of my friends miss it, and I miss it too.

It will be nice to have better security, this can only mean better things in the future. If you think Sony was fighting this generation their going to be fighting alot harder now, which hopefully means even better things for us Gamers. Until I see you on PSN, stay strong loyal gamers!

  • you got to be kidding me, lol
is this a update to inform us of a past update, that also inform us that there will be a update

its true that it does only everything, including update from the past and BEYOND…

lol…but really pls speed it up a bit

  • Im not shocked … When it comes to the PS network it always had some type of hic-up. I dont ever recall a game that was released without any network issue. So why would I think this outage was going to be a cakewalk ?

It is what it is … I was looking forward for Brink and my plans was to get it on PSN, but now i am on the fence on that.

  • This is really starting to get annoying now.

  • I’m thinking this will go for a full month at least.

  • Hey, if anyone looking to game at this point on either network (PSN whenever that will be) … come by and talk to us. We are small and just looking to game by any means …

    http://www.justwannaplay.me/home

  • YOU LYING PIECE OF S.H.I.T!!!! THATS WHY YOUR STOCKS ARE PLUMMETING!! I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE MONDAY’S STOCK ONCE IT OPENS KARMA IS A B.I.T.C.H. …

    DOWN 6.75% SINCE THIS HACKING…

  • It’s okay, I stopped being able to point out that XBL went down for 13 days in 2007 sometime last week.

Just get it right, ‘s’all I’m sayin’.

  • Ouch..

“May 6 (Bloomberg) — Sony Corp., said to be subpoenaed by New York over data breaches of its PlayStation Network, declined to the lowest level in more than a month in Tokyo trading after raising the number of accounts that were compromised.”

  • shi.t balls! wtf

  • MAKE.BELIEVE….THE NETWORK IS UP AND RUNNING

  • PS3..IT ONLY DOES…SINGLEPLAYER… :(

  • glad my cybershot, and bravia are safe, much love SONY, the ONLY console’s i’ll ever own will be PS’s, as long as we’re good for November, (check the avatar)

  • I honestly just cannot wait any more… This is simply going on too long, and with no ETA. I am sure you guys are making an exceptionally secure server, no doubt, but what is the point of a server if its never ready in time? Its sort of a your damned if you damned if you don’t situation, but you really should be informing us more of when to expect it up, or average testing times etc…

  • headwoundranger

    WOW

  • Wow…. I am a Sony fan through and through…. but my patience is starting to wear very, very thin here. I wish I had bought the Xbox 360 version of Mortal Kombat. This has gone way past ridiculous.

  • R.I.P psn & ps3. I don’t see sony ever recovering from this. Sure you MAY get the network back up some day (late May / early June my guess) but your fan base is diminished. Good luck when you try and sell the new psp2 or whatever you wanna call it. Not to mention the ps4 that will probably sell for 799.99 and still be screwed up. A moment of silence please for our playstations…………………………………………………………………………

  • I SAY [DELETED] U ALL [DELETED] Sony IS doing the best it cant And they said if they feel safe to turn PSN back on they would And if they didnt they wouldnt So Stop [DELETED] When PSN Is back your going to forget about XBL And i have an XBOX To ANd i still play my PS3 even without PSN And if YOUR Staying in XBOX get of this Blog Who cares if your going to XBOX I know i DOnt [DELETED] THE HACKERS SONY DIDNT MAKE THEM MAD THEY JUST DONT HAVE [DELETED] ELSE TO DO SINCE THEY [DELETED] AT GAMING AND WANA CHEAT

  • @ghost_13 Man i rather buy PS4 then a new xbox i had 3 Xbox360 and red ring AND THE ONLY GAME I HAVE IS GEARS 1 GEARS 2 AND BETA GEARS 3 F HALO **** NEVER GOING TO PLAY THAT S***man So i say PLAYSTATION FTW And Wii The ONly GAME I HAVE IS SMASH BROS

  • Don’t blame Sony for the delay, they’re probably just working on Valve Time.

  • It’s really not sony’s fault, sure the network probably could have been more secure, but whoever brought down the network is obviously has a very intelligent team in place, cyberterrorists…anyone??

  • @Byrdman1677: “a very intelligent team in place, cyberterrorists…anyone??”

Sure. They were clever.. Wouldn’t go that far, though…. Willing to bet that, by the end of this, no personal data will have been distributed.

Really, in terms of malicious behavior, Sony just found their match in opportunistic actors. And we’re caught in the middle, but it’s still hilarious.
