PlayStation Network Launches 2011 MLB.TV with New Features for Opening Day

The Major League Baseball pre-season is coming down the home stretch, and with Opening Day of the 2011 season just two days away, we’re excited to announce 2011 MLB.TV for PS3 is now available on PlayStation Network.

For the 2011 MLB season, the MLB.TV team is introducing significant advancements, including an improved user interface, more integration and more sophisticated tools for live streaming. Check it out as our own Jeff Rubenstein walks you through the highlights:

Some of the new 2011 upgrades include:

  • Highest Quality HD Streaming – Speed detection technology gives users ultra-HQ video access (NexDef 4.5 mbps) depending on available bandwidth.
  • Enhanced Audio – In-game alternate audio selection allows users to overlay the home or away team’s broadcasters over the live video or use the “Park” option to include the ballpark’s natural sounds.
  • Quick-Access Stats – View player cards with full career stats, league leaders, and in-game stats including AB, R, H, RBI, K, BB, SO, LOB, AVG, HR, SB.
  • Event Navigation – Select in-game event types, such as home runs, hits or stolen bases, to show on a progression timeline and jump directly to the at bat where they happened.
  • Improved User Interface – User-friendly design makes it even easier to browse.

In addition to the upgrades you’ll still enjoy all of the great features introduced in 2010:

  • Home and Away Feeds – Choose to watch either the home or away broadcast feed with a subscription to MLB.TV Premium.
  • Live Broadcast DVR Functionality – Use the live video overlay to pause and rewind live games or fast-forward to return to live game action.
  • Season Archive – Watch games and relive great moments from earlier in the season.
  • Scrollable Linescore – Go directly to any half-inning to watch only that portion of the game.
  • MLB Scoreboard – Scrollable league-wide scoreboard for each day’s games in three modes: Pre-game with scheduled starting pitchers; Live with up-to-the-minute game status; and Post-game with final pitching decisions and archived feed selection.
  • Favorite Team Selection – Pick a favorite team or teams to be featured first on the daily scoreboard.
  • Calendar Schedule – Scroll through the entire 2011 Major League Baseball schedule in calendar format or the user-designated favorite team’s schedule.

PlayStation Network users can download the application now from the “Media” category on PSN in the PlayStation Store, and launch it from the Video section of the XMB. If you aren’t already a MLB.TV subscriber, you can go to ps3.com/mlbtv to sign up for either of the two annual packages: currently, MLB.TV is $99.95 and MLB.TV Premium is $119.95.

Be sure to check it out, baseball fans!

  • I’m so juiced about baseball being back and I this app came through for me so much. I used to get the extra innings package from directv but when I got this it was automatic for me.

Thanks for the improvements made to make this better for this year. I didnt’ have any issues with it last year. Sure it’d freeze momentarily here and there but 95% of the time it worked great and I am connected wirelessely.

Phillies can say all the want but you’re going to have to go through the World Champs first! Did you guys already forget about last year?!?! I’m sure Ryan Howard doesn’t. ;-)

  • I am so excited to have this on the PS3. I also dig the enhancements from the previous version.

Facebook integration might be an awesome way to remind people when their favorite team is playing, and show my favorite player highlights, or possibly a player tracker within the app. Whoaaaa. Keep up the great work.

  • Sigh. I was really happy about this until I actually tried to use it. Nothing but hiccups and stutters in the video quality. It makes the games unwatchable. Hey MLB.TV, instead of constantly shooting for ridiculously high streaming speeds, why not make sure it actually works at normal speeds first?

  • I love this app. Is there anyway to get the games in full screen though? The light blue border is kind of annoying.

  • All of this sounds fantastic! Really looking forward to friday. Go Red Sox!!!!

  • Great shirt Jeff, LOVE IT!!!! Your a PHILLY and BALTIMORE fan also? I know I am, my PSN ID isn’t PHIBALNATION for nothing. Let’s go PHILLIES!!!

  • the streams in the ps3 app for all of the feeds are buggy it’s buggy to say to the least it cuts out ever 5 to 15 secs. Please SCEA or jeff talk to MLB and ask them to fix the audio with your PS3 app asap. before the season starts on thursday. The ps3 app this year has more problems than last years version.

  • Can we have something like PS+ members get to watch games only of their team is playing? Basically, I like “Team A” so I can see “Team A” whenever that team has a game. I think this would be nice since the full service gives you all the teams. Kind of like paying for something you may not use at all. Unless you’re a diehard enthusiast…

  • First time using the mlb.tv app last night and I don’t know aboutt anyone else but it was buggy. The audio was skipping every few seconds. I am on an 18mbps and hard wired connection to ps3 with no other network traffic, plus my netflix was working flawlessly so it had to be the app. I Iove all the features but hopefully these bugs can be fixed sooner than later if not I have to order extra innings.

  • One important question: are there extra features of this app that are made available only to MLB.TV premium subscribers or is all the functionality the same regardless of what level MLB.TV you buy? I want to make sure I don’t spend an extra $20 if the MLB.TV regular package will suffice.

    Thanks.

  • The premium gives your live DVD controls and pip online if I am not mistaken. If you go to MLB.tv they have side by side comparison

Can anyone else chime in on audio stutter issues?

  • That’s dvr controls

  • smcilhen asks a good question: Do features referred to in this article about the PS3 app apply to both premium and basic subscriptions? I get it that the premium subscription gets you DVR, home/away, and PIP for the computer version, but this article implies that the DVR functions are included with app at any any subscription level. Anyone know?

  • Games aren’t in full screen. Audio is buggy. Are they going to fix this soon?

  • Can’t stand the grey border around the picture.
    It’s distracting.
Hope they get rid of it.

  • Pretty poor debut for this app.

    – I was getting server disconnects prior to today.
    – Border around the picture. It even shifts off center every now and again.
    – Audio is choppy. It’s more glaring when you switch to ballpark only audio.

I have my PC hooked up to the same TV and it seems to work better that way via browser. Computer viewing allows different views (pip, split, mosaic) which is something the PS3 app doesn’t. PS3 app does have some nice extras.

    Hope they fix it!

  • I have only one problem with the app. I would love to be able to have split screen or picture-in-picture available with the app since its one of the perks of purchasing the premium service. Any chance of adding this ability? Other than that, its a great app and I love that I can watch my Cubbies through my PS3!

  • I am also having issues with the border around the picture. It seems to be an overscan issue. Also, the audio is slightly choppy! I see we are all having the same problems! PLEASE FIX THIS SOON people!

  • Every single day this season I’ve tried to watch, this app has been terrible — video freezing every 5 seconds, no matter which game I choose, which feed, etc. Very frustrating. I tried contacting MLB’s TV tech support but they are unresponsive. My internet connection is fine — if I pull up a game on my laptop, it’s fine, and I can stream Netflix perfectly through my PS3. I’m about ready to give up after five days of this. What a waste of money.
