Crytek Talks Crysis 2 PS3; Multiplayer Demo Now Available

Console gamers didn’t get the chance to experience the first Crysis, a shooter known for making PC gamers feel self-conscious about the power of their graphics cards. PlayStation 3 owners won’t be left out of the follow-up, as Crysis 2 arrives on PS3 next week.

Recently I spoke with Executive Producer Nathan Camarillo about those trademark Crytek visuals, and about the new multiplayer demo, which just hit PSN last night.

PlayStation Blog: We know Crytek can produce on the PC. How do you utilize the PS3 to live up to the high PC standard?

Nathan Camarillo: It’s the core of CryEngine 3 that’s able to scale appropriately and we can adjust per platform exactly what we wanna get out of it. We want the exact same gameplay experience, the same fun, the same intensity, all the same visual information that you need to understand and play the game appropriately. It’s just a lot of under the hood magic.

PSB: One recent IGN article said Crysis 2 didn’t look very good on PS3. CVG/PSM disagreed. What’s your response?

NC: I’ve gone on the record saying that if you stick PS3 and 360 side by side I would challenge anyone to find any meaningful difference. I don’t see it at all.

PSB: Talk about 3D implementation Crysis 2 on the PS3.

NC: In Cry Engine 3 we have a really tricky implementation of 3D – we’re able to generate the 2nd image with little to no impact. We don’t lose visual quality, we don’t lose resolution. You get the same experience as you get in the 2D game, except it’s in 3D, which is better. It’s more immersive, it feels better.

3dd

The 2nd part of our implementation is: we don’t throw things out of the screen at you. We start at the TV screen and then push in. This avoids eyestrain and eye fatigue, because we want you to play this for hours and hours. If you’re playing single player it’s easily 10-12 hours for a good gamer to get through the game.

PSB: What should PS3 gamers be looking out for in the demo?

NC: In most games you’re mentally programmed to stick on the ground. If you wanna go one level higher, go find a ladder, go find some stairs. It takes until people see someone jump in front of them that they realize they can jump there. You gotta break the habit of being ground-constrained like in other games.

If it’s one story high, you can jump there. If it’s a story and half, you can jump and pull yourself up. So it really changes the speed and pace of multiplayer. I can’t wait for PlayStation 3 owners to get their taste of crazy, insane nanosuit multiplayer action.

That wait is now over – the Crysis 2 multiplayer demo is now available on the PlayStation Store, featuring two game modes on two maps. Try it out and share your thoughts in the comments.

  • I have played the beta and demo for the xbox 360. I have played both maps on the PS3 as well as the PC and here are the differences I have noticed graphically.

The xbox 360 version has better looking water and better frame rate when many things are happening compared to PS3.

The PS3 seems to have more motion blur and more sound FX and I did notice WAY more frame rate drops when the 5 kill streak on skyline was activated and grenades went off.(the frame rate drop was not in the 360 version)

The PC demo looks better and runs better than both.

If you were able to choose from one of the three then the PC version is the way to go.

The PS3 and 360 version are very close to each other so you could go with any one if you were able to.

For those that just got off KZ3 or crysis 2 PC then went to the crysis 2 demo(PS3 or 360) it would be painful to your eyes.

  • Crytek and Sony, I’m an avid gamer and thoroughly enjoyed Crysis and Crysis Warhead on PC. I have also loved my PS3 for almost four years now. From everything I have seen the PS3 version of Crysis 2 is sub-par when compared to the other platforms. I am sad to say that.

    This raises two questions:

    1) @ Crytek – If the PS3 version really is sub-par it will take the world about 5 whole minutes to realize that fact
once the game is released. If it really is sub-par, what do you plan to say? Why did you release a
    lesser quality version?

    2) @ Sony – If the Ps3 version is sub-par, why is this tolerated? In fact, while Sony exclusives are generally
    AMAZING – Killzone 3, Uncharted 2, GoW III, etc… – why are lower quality multi-plats allowed? Don’t
you have the right to veto a release? I know it costs tons of $$$$$$, but I just don’t see a reason not to
    demand at least equal quality.

  • i had alot of hope for this one ,but i cant even connect to the demo then theres a. problem how am i supposed to try it out if i cant even play it?

  • This is a joke right? Crytek we don’t want your unoptimized game on our PS3

  • Lets see…

SUBHD, terrible framerate, low resolution mess. Popin… and it runs worse than the 360 version. I find it pathetic that Sony is patting them on the back by giving them time on the blog for this, it is a disservice to PS3 owners. Unless they remarkably change from the demo to retail, which no one has managed to do this generation EXCEPT PS3 dev’s, this is the final product. Its a sham, and I hope no one deletes any of these comments. Crytek is just trying to cash in before anyone notices, and its disgusting. PS3 owners have a higher attach rate for videogames now, and yet the PS3 is still treated terribly. I don’t get what we need to do as consumers to show that we are worth catering to, but its clearly not buying games. Keep Crisis 2, and your 360 exclusive. Sony developers have all put you to shame, and your claims are unfounded. Killzone2 runs better, and has more going on. I won’t even speak about Killzone3.

Seriously, remove these guys off the blog. They really don’t deserve it.

  • Why is this liar on official PlayStation blog? This is TEH official blog and Sony is allowing this? wth!?

  • Not surprised to see no response here….Had high hopes for this one.

  • Hey, is there any way to rate this as 0 out of 5? Because it’s only letting me click 1 out of 5 – Camarillo and his band of Crytek fabricators don’t deserve even that. And Jeff, what the heck man? What is with your cowardice? GET THE TRUTH FROM THIS GUY! That is what JOURNALISM IS! DO NOT let him walk all over you and your community with this nonsense. Seriously, man up and give it to ’em!

  • I was in utter shock and disappointment as i played the first match, the frame rate right from the beginning felt like the game was running @ 10-20fps,and thus the visuals took a beating, level of detail pop ins throughout the game, too much motion blur taking away sharpness, extremely inconsistent AA in the game, and i was like for the love of GOD,why Crytek why why do you have to do this? All these days i never believed in IGN calling the ps3 version as bad,but today, today after playing the demo i am depressed so much that i have to agree with IGN.

Now the OPM did say they have the retail build and that the ps3 version ran as good as the 360 version if not better, but ended up giving the game an 8 on 10,now who am i believe,i was following crysis2 since the day it was announced on consoles and now i am very very sad as the launch day approaches:-(

  • yo man!
add the option to switch from 720 or 1080 from game!
i hate having to manually switch to 720 from ps3 settings!:/

  • And yes, as many have said. PS3 has such amazing titles like God Of War 3, Killzone, Uncharted, and Resistance. Who did Crytek think they were going to fool? I hate posting twice. Its just such amazing lying at this point, and of course no one will remark about it. Its just a sad state of gaming when a developer can’t admit that they didn’t do any of the things they claimed, and we are supposed to be stupid sheep and just buy it anyway. They didn’t even show off a PS3 version of the game running. I loved the first game on the PC, I knew the PS3/360 wasn’t capable of that. But the PS3 is capable of Killzone3, Uncharted, and god of war. in HD…. with high #’s of multiplayer.

  • And imo black ops ran decently well on the ps3(except for matchmaking issues which i face, still face thanks to the place i live called India)

  • The article is full of you know what. LIES by Crytek. The game sucks on the PS3 i’m not even going to lie. I have played the 360 demo over and over and then finally I download this and it’s utter @#% compared to the 360 version. 360 version has higher res, higher fps, better lighting, better textures it’s ridiculous. I actually wanted to buy this on the PS3 but it isn’t worth it. Looks like the game is smeared with grease. You can tell the game is running at a lower resolution. They have the nerve to say it runs the same and if you put them side by side you wouldn’t tell a difference. Yeah if you’re high and drunk probably not.

  • And now you know why they waited a week until release before showing off the PS3 demo. Don’t waste your time/money on this game it’s main focus was the 360 and it shows. I can’t get over how horrendous the visuals look. *shivers*

  • I just canceled my preorder that was paid in full, the demo is nothing like what we had been promised. I have HomeFront and while it’s not great at least they didn’t promise to push the system and brag that it was the same on all consoles.

  • Nathan Camarillo what game were you playing? I do not see the visual fidelity you are talking about. Framerate is awful and hit detection is trash. Not to mention laggy connections and incorrect NAT types (my NAT is not moderate it is always open yet the game says it is WTF). This game could be great when everything works properly. The powers, customization, dogtag system, and unlock system are nice. I was looking for something fun to play because Killzone 3 is boring, but i guess I will have to wait for something else. I will read some thorough reviews before deciding to buy just in-case anything changes when the game comes out.

  • Luckily I have a powerful PC to play it on. They should not have bothered with the consoles.

  • To bad the PS3 version is the worst looking version of the three.

  • After playing the demo I can clearly say this game is a joke compared to Killzone 3 graphically. I am very disappointed in the cry engine 3. Crysis 2 is probably using about 40 percent of the PS3’s power. The server is slow, game play mechanics are terrible, and I am having frame rate drops.

  • “NC: I’ve gone on the record saying that if you stick PS3 and 360 side by side I would challenge anyone to find any meaningful difference. I don’t see it at all.”

Do you mean side by side and then just pause the image and compare? what is “meaningful” in your definition? So lower framerate, popins, lower resolution, [DELETED] AA implementation, washed out IQ should not matter and should not be considered meaningful?? LOL

Every major site has said that the PS3 version runs worse than 360 and Crytek still has the audacity to say it is equal. After the initial comment from Crytek that PS3 version will set the bar in terms of console shooters…all I can say is that was utter [DELETED]! Don’t open your mouth before you can deliver the goods. Go compare it to KZ2 cause its not even close to that 3 year old PS3 game. I won’t even mention Uncharted 2, KZ3 or GOW3 because that would make Crytek look like some amateurs!

  • MAXIMUM SUBHD

  • Wow just finished playing the demo and for a game that had so much hype around it, i must say it was very disappointing. The graphics look bad and washed up. trying to connect to a game took me like half an hour which is really ridiculous if you ask me. the hit markers are awful. i know this is a demo and not the actual final product but how much can you change in a week? really thinking about canceling my amazon order which is paid in full and getting another game instead.

  • this had better not be the final build crytek cause if so that is a joke
    Framerate drops
    looks washed out
    hit detection is bad
    horrible melee
looks on par with the 360 version, are you trolling ps3 owners????

you want the support of the PS community you better fix that

  • so far i’ve got home from school and everytime i try to join a game it says my network connection has been lost..all other games work and i just can’t be arsed anymore…what a waste of my time, i would criticise the game but i haven’t played a flipping game yet! I hope the game seriously improves in the real thing because otherwise i’ll have wasted 40 quid! Grrrrrrrrrr Crytek

  • I’m definitely canceling my pre order after playing this pathetic demo. What a lot of hype for nothing. The PS3’s SPU’s are barely being utilized. What a joke.

  • it think its safe to say this demo was a huge disappointment to PS3 owners and myself included i have played both the pc and PS3 versions lets just say i will be getting the pc version on day one and i will be playing Killzone 3 in the meantime… Crytek shame on you.

    Note to Sony
this game is unacceptable for the PS3

  • BLEACH, you must be the first person in here claiming the 360 and PS3 versions are equal…. I truly wish you were right…..

  • I agree with most of these comments, but you know what. Crytek did say at first that Crysis will run best on Ps3, now they say they are all equal? I still got the articles for those who would want to read them.

    Chris

  • The multiplayer demo sucks.. I am very dissapointed. Waiting so long for the demo.. it’s finally here and this is what we get??

The game comes out next week.. it’s not looking good at all. [DELETED] Crytek!

Killzone 3 Beta [DELETED] all over it.. even Killzone 2.

  • Sorry Crytek, but the game looks bad on consoles!

  • Don’t bother with Crysis 2. It’s not worth the time of day IMO. Crytek this demo is crap, end of story.

  • Wow. Just wow.

I can’t remember the last time a blog entry was rated this low.
I seriously respect developers who make games. It takes a lot of effort. When they put out a good product they should be rewarded handsomely. I’m currently downloading the Crysis 2 mp demo (its taking forever!) and I really hope that people are just being overly critical for no reason, but at this point I must believe there is some proof to what is being said.

Crytek, I’ll give you guys the benefit of the doubt. I’ll try the mp demo, wait for some more reviews and than decide if this game is worth my hard earned cash.

    Good Luck.

PS: People. If you want a fantastic shooter. Killzone 3 is it. It is the best shooter on the market bar none. From what I’ve heard it isn’t receiving the attention/sales it deserves! If you wanna support developers who are taking advantage of the best video game system out there, the PS3, than look no further than Killzone3. It totally rocks!

  • Gee, from all the positive KZ comments here you’d think that game was anything other than an abject bomb. Sure is shillsville around these parts. As for the Crysis 2 demo, I don’t play shooters but I have watched a friend play it and it sure doesn’t live up to the hype in terms of visuals, that much I can say.

Thanks so much for your feedback, everybody! We at EA understand that players are having technical issues with the PlayStation 3 Crysis 2 multiplayer demo and we are working to resolve this as quickly as possible. We apologize if it is affecting your experience and we appreciate your patience and support.

  • I will be trying out the demo this weekend and sadly it doesn’t surprise me one damn bit to see a company fail to use the PS3 effectively. I honestly believe the companies that embrace the PS3 correctly and make games like KZ3, Uncharted, God of War, Metal Gear, ETC. ETC. are simply better game developers and we should only expect polished games from them

  • I must admit that I was really disappointed by the demo. I played Crysis, and this one has mediocre graphics. Killzone 3 is much better, IMO.
I pre-ordered the game, but seriously considering to cancel it. Perhaps the first reviews will help me make up my mind.

CryEngine 3 is a let down on consoles. Perhaps Battlefield 3 will be better at showcasing a worthy game engine.

  • this is demo is garbage, i like how they have jeff post this and not one of those ass clowns from notalenttek post this, cause they’ll get reemed for biting off more than can chew, stupid demo told me it was my fault for my connection and why i can’t get into a game it’s your crappy server, glad i played this sorry of a game/demo, cancelling and putting it on a better game, i try to join a game 15x and only played 1, thats sorry, crytek you SUCK AS DEV’S, STAY ON THE PC<

  • Spoken like a true producer trying to sell obvious [DELETED] port. The PS3 version runs and looks terrible compared to the 360 build. Crytek should be ashamed on how this turned out. Sony should force them to fix the problems with the PS3 build or else.

  • Really hard to get into a match in this game it seems. I have been in one match and the game seems pretty good though. May pick it up later in the year.

  • Can’t even play the demo.. if im not going to be able to atleast test it, im definitely not going to buy the game then because i might turn out to have the same connection issues. But from what others are saying i might as well not buy this game at all, oh well i have the Socom 4 beta to hold me.

  • Garbage….. They didn’t use ps3 to it’s true potential… games like Killzone 3 and God of War 3 and Uncharted 3 are doing that… not Crysis 2… stop lying and get a better game producer.

  • thanks for the bad port crytek. just shows how lazy you guys are.
    i am just utterly disappointed.

  • I wouldn’t even waste money on it, they lied about it being the best console version on the PS3. And from what i have heard from people, it’s disappointing. They better hammer out all of the frame rate issues, jaggies etc out of it they want people to buy an inferior product. If you want quality stick with PS3 Exclusives, I’m sick of multiplatform developer not living up to the words they say and disappoint people from a lack luster game they pass off as superior than Killzone, or any other PS family exclusive game.

  • Just played it and I must agree with people. The game does not look that good, it took a long time before connecting to a game and when I did we were 6 (2 rank 10, 1 rank 6, and 3 rank 1) and the game made the team all rank 1 Vs rank 6 and 10 I was like wth? isnt suppose to make balanced team? I didn’t play much but from what I have played it’s nothing really special even if at start the idea of having special abilities like that is good.

  • Just played it and have to agree with everyone.Crappy framerates, matchmaking problems, server problems etc it’s a long list…..had high hopes for crysis 2 but after the demo I really can’t be bothered with it.If you’re gonna multiplatform a game the least you can do is give it some justice and not like the crap of crysis 2 on the ps3 very dissapointing crytek

  • @87 I agree, i had high hopes for it as well. Very disappointed now.

  • Gt this trash off our blog! I hope the people runnin the blog doesn’t mistake all this traffic as a positive.

  • Too late Crytek. Thanks for acknowledging that the game is coming to PS3 also but, too late.

  • ITT: Crytek on BLAST

    GuerillaGames: laughs

  • This is seriously disappointing. All I heard from the beginning of Crysis 2 development was that the PS3 Crysis 2 game would be the best console version of the game. Obviously now we can tell that everything they have told us is a lie. Crytek you have seriously dug yourselves a deep hole here. Best of luck getting out.
