Hi everyone, once again we’re adding new features to the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system via firmware update to ensure we’re bringing you the best, most comprehensive entertainment experience possible. PS3 system software update (v3.40) will be available soon, adding the PlayStation Plus subscription, enhancements to the connection between your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts and more. Additionally, we’ll be launching system software update (v6.30) for the PSP (PlayStation Portable) system simultaneously with PS3 system software update (v3.40), adding PlayStation Plus compatibility as well as other new features.
We’ve gone ahead and provided a few highlights from PS3 firmware update (v3.40) below:
- PlayStation Plus: PlayStation Network users will be able to purchase membership to PlayStation Plus; a new subscription service on the PlayStation Network that provides you with new options to expand and enhance your gaming experience and enable you to gain an exclusive set of features and content. Friendly reminder, all of you PlayStation Network users will continue to have free access to PlayStation Network’s unmatched and expanding suite of new and exclusive features while PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive and expanding set of gaming features, content and functionality.
- Photo Gallery: A new network based photo sharing feature is now available on the Photo Gallery. The enhancement allows you to upload, browse and comment on photos on Facebook and Picasa Web Album. You can also opt to share your photos between your PlayStation Network friends as well as print photos from Photo Gallery.
- Video Editor & Uploader: Video Editor and Uploader is a new function found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which enables you to edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.
- Five Star Rating Support: Users can rate the PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.
- Power Save Settings: The default setting for PS3 System Auto-Off will be set at 2 hours, providing you with additional power save options and further improving power save features on the PS3 system.
In addition to the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PlayStation Network application on Facebook.com will be made available. This builds upon what was previously launched with Trophies and the ability to publish purchases from the PlayStation Store. Now you can further integrate your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts with this new application. The application allows you to display your PlayStation Network profile on your Facebook account, find out which of your Facebook friends have a PSN account and send them a PlayStation Network friend request, view your PSN friends’ online status and add the PlayStation Network application tab to your Facebook user profile.
We’re very excited to be able to provide you with continued system software upgrades, which ensure your PS3 and PSP systems remain compelling offerings for years to come. once again this is very cool. FIX THE BROWSER it is practically useless now, even you tube hates it ! :) i am signing up for ps+ but please fix the browser or at least make it so we can update the browser. Work out something with firefox ! :D
do everything? time to add divx 7 support and support mkv. if they want to sell consoles then update already. sony tv support MKV but not on the PS3? i mean a WD Live TV that is $89 does it and DTS streaming from shares and DLNA/UPNP. come on sony time to update teh PS3 like you did with your TVs, or let us know if we should get WD LIVE TV unit since they will do it.
want the ps3 to be the media player, support divx 7/mkv and a look at the divx support earlier on and now its one of the standards. either be ahead of the game (like you were with the ps3 and hdmi 1.3, 1080p, blu-ray, DLNA etc) or be quickly taken over at $89 units. hell iknow people that go buy media players at $200, that is close enough to a PS3, but since no MKV support you just lost a console sale in the console war.

I don’t see much incentive to sign up for PSN Plus yet. I wish they had chosen better games to entice people to sign up for a one year commitment. If this is the best that can be done for an introductory offer, I don’t have much faith in the success of PSN+ throughout the year. I hope I’m wrong.
okay so i wanted to download into a usb drive but there is no download for this version. only 3.30 is listed. is it going to be put on the site? would be nice so you don’t wholly have to rely on the system to update if you are having connection troubles.

Just curious, how does the automatic update work? I’ve set it two a time 2-4am, does that mean that the ps3 will automatically come on at that time to update if switched off or do i have to leave it on?

Like it so far. Here is what I want. HULU and NETFLIX on te drive no disc. Cross chat,easier menu system. I will be getting the playstation plus that looks like a good value. Oh, and for those people who don’t have a backwards system ps2 emulation and hay as long as we are shooting for the stars how about the ability to play all psp games that you have downloaded on the ps3 the would rule you could use the games on both like the mini’s.

When downloading flOw for free that day, they made it a point that you COULDN’T redownload it.
And you most likely got that WipEout HD Dynamic Theme on your European account, not your main (probably US) account. That’s why THAT’S not in your download list.

This is Stupid SONY, Make SUB-Account into MASTERS account, all my trophies are on ART-IS-WAR but oh no not HOME or PS+, also I have 6 ps3’s (3 broken) and I can’t buy ANYTHING or put anything on my new PS3 not to mention the $227 worth of content which is now all loss enless I pay $150 to get ols ps3 fixed, BS FIX IT SONY YOU CAN HAVE MY OLD PS3′S JUST DEACTIVATE MY ACCOUNT
Video Editor looks cool…but how do you create videos? Even if you have a camera attached, there’s no way to create video from XMB.

I Don’t want video editing or picture stuff, i don’t ever even use that. I want things that improve communicating with friends. Sony you fail me again, day by day I wish even more that I would of gotten an XBOX 360, and this new pay for PSN thing makes me even more angry. I bought the PS3 because of its freeness, now its slowly turning into something that resembles a XBOX.Also, Improve communications, i am sick and tired of you sony.
What the heck is wrong with the updater? Every time it downloads halfway, it gives me the error message “A connection could not be established.” Also, the PlayStation website doesn’t have the update for 3.40, just 3.30.

Because i have over 60 games on my PSN account, btw. i just suscribed to PSN+, and now my PS3 look like a “dump”. I have SOO MANY games and it seem like it is IMPOSSIBLE TO CLEAN UP all thoses MIXED games. It look like a complete mess, PSONE games MIXED trough PS3 games…
and no alphabetical order!
i have 70 games in PS3 case.
They’re all togheter in alphabetical order “left to right”.
same for my 50 PS2 and my 10 PSONE games.
Each “brand” close to each other BUT NOT MIXED TOGETHER!!!

waaayyy better then the last update. but cross chat being part of plus only is disappointing. i mean nearly EVERYONE has been asking for this since release of the ps3, I can’t see holding out and not giving it to EVERYONE.
Honestly I think this update is boring and bleak how can some people get aroused by this i mean its nothing it’s almost as if sony is trying to appeal to women or “casual gamers” c’mon! a majority of us are core gamers develop huge fat updates that will dramatically change PSN for the better & not just eye candy such as shiny icons ext- please stop with the social networks instead of focusing on other social networks improve your own. oh and Playstion plus, that seems like a total rip off pay for a subscription and the free things along with it go away after the subscription is over? I am getting tired of seeing all this whining about cross game chat.. And to be honest.. The only people whining about cross game chat are probably 360 owners as well.. And the last thing im thinking about is chatting with someone while playing a game anyways.. Men are not suppose to be all that social anyways.. I hope sony never adds it just so i know some guy somewhere is crying cause he cant talk to his friend.. I would rather have free games every month and free game trails.(not saying cgc is won’t be a catch). I really believe some of these people are paid or work for microsoft to leave idiotic comments

Some of you guys have issues, seriously. You’re lucky Sony didn’t start charging for the WHOLE online service with this update. I’m a Plus member and I think it’s great so far. I’ve never known adding features to be a bad thing, but some of you guys are making this whole facebook and video editor support seem like the end of the world. Sheesh.

I really dont want to keep my PS3 power ON 24h/24h and YLOD it, just because SONY want me to update automatically.
It’s only usefull if it Power ON at a certain time,
and shutdown when all updates is completed,

You should REALLY make this video editor thing to be able to record in-game footage that would be golden and its not like it would change the ps3’s rep into a negative like really ive had friggin mw2 shots thru walls at random moments and got double headshots i guess thats nothing important to be seen again though right playstation??!

Just making ne Folders! Hit Triangle and go to Information, then you can make a Folder Name. I have Folders for Demos, PSN Games und PSone Games.

OK thats ok and all but the PS STORE content game wise is wack its not on the level the 360 has that really the only thing I see the 360 is better at.UP-TO-DATE GAMES. When I get bored of playing the same game over and over I look for 1 at my finger tips i can play but since I see none worth buying or EVEN PLAYING I turn off my PS3 unlike the 360
Thanks for a 2 month wait. Looks like that idea thing you’ve created you know where PSN gamers told PSN their ideas of what they really wanted on PS3 wasnt taken into consideration when coming out with this bullsh** update. Video editing? have EyeCreate software/computer for that the plus service seems like a gypt waste of money for service a month seems like Im paying for a bill, Come better next time with what WE PSN Gamers want you have the list NOW MAKE IT POSSIBLE.
