The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

Now, who the hell was pirating PS3 games? I mean, honestly; many of the largest multi-platform games were more popular on the xbox, and pirate-central has been on the PC forever. Nobody was pirating this thing because it was cheaper to do on the Xbox and PC.

Sony just hacked my system and took a featurew from me that I paid for this makes Sony a bunch of crooks.

I went onto the PS network last night and made sure to get whatever updates for my games that I needed. I will now be boycotting Sony. Blu-rays shall now be torrented instead of purchased since I can no longer rely that they will be playable without 3.21, and I’ll be picking up games for other systems or simply not purchasing them if it’s an exclusive. I hope developers move on and stop supporting Sony now that they’ve lost a portion of their potential customers.

For everyone asking me for links to support my arguments, please. I already stated i do not have links HOWEVER these are commonly known consumer protection laws. Anyone who would care for assurance please contact the federal trade commision or better business bureau and ask them some simple questions about the matter. they make it their job not to allow companies to do these things. please do ur research and dont make urself look like fools on the internet just cuz its anonymous.

I payed over 500$ for my PS3 which was advertised to have the feature to install another OS, which it did, so I assume that this feature cost a slight portion of the ps3. I refuse to update my ps3 to 3.21 not because I want to ‘hack my ps3 and pirate games’ Infact I would never get myself involved in such events, but because the fact that your taking out functionality that we loyal customers had payed for. Sony I had major respect for you, I usually would give you the benefit of doubt in most situations like this, but this is just going to far. Give us back the things we pay for, even though I know this isn’t going to happen, even if it somehow did I still will not forgive you, all my respect towards Sony is now lost forever.

I read it again, and it was worded a bit off and that is what threw me. Your other reply did say what you wrote here. I didn’t look dumb, just asking where you got your information that it was the legal team. I’m not the only person to ask you for this.
This update does not only seems illegal but it is extremely disrespectful. The main reason I choose to buy the PS3 over Xbox360, despite of the latter having a much larger collection of games, was exactly because of its ability to run Linux allied with its online network, without monthly mantainence fees.
Now, with this update that obligate us to choose between two key functionalities, I expected Sony to, at least, propose its users a refund for the console and all the money spent with it.
I would rather return the unit with all the games I bought than loose the ability to run Linux or loose the PSN access…
i find it sad that sony has not seen fit to respond to a single post up here or give any information about this. i truly am losing faith in this company and while know they are not listening to this blog at this point i guarantee they will listen in the future when i speak with my wallet. i will certainly discontinue my support of indie publishers via the psn so they are also losing out. this is no joke i own like 35 psn games and 57 ps3 games. i heavily support his are which i love. i can no longer continue that support when my favorite company will not return my loyalty or support. sadly i may have to buy a system that isnt made by sony for the first time in 16 years.

I’m not very happy with Sony right now, I got my ps3 for bacward compatablity and the use of the other OS feature. Taking that away from me makes me think they don’t care about their users. Futhermore I’m dissapointed that I have to choose between playing my games and watching movies or using my other OS.
Why not hire the guy they’re trying to prevent from hacking the system instead of fighting him? You’d think this is the type of mind sony would want working for them. But that would be too much like right
i am disgusted that Sony have done this I only got the PS3 because it had this support they have managed to keep it secure so far, that hacker who could see data but do nothing with it(he’s the one who hacked the iphone) has probably cost us this but it is still unacceptable
Listen Sony has every right to maintain their product is secure from hackers. Companies and the government agencies who are using the PS3 as supercomputers don’t use their consoles to play games or use the PSN so this doesn’t affect them. The patch is not mandatory or even being pushed to do it. For users who were running Linux and not trying to hack then buy, build a PC or VM workstation.
What we need to do is choose our battles carefully. Does that mean we start a Class Action Lawsuit over this? Now if this was over MP3, AVI, or MP4 playback I would say yes but for something only a very small group uses no. Sony will point out that yes Terms Of Service gives them the right to maintain their intellectual property is safe from hackers. All they have to do is show that Geohot and the other hackers can breach the Cell architecture to play either pirated games or to hack online games in a civil court and they’ll win easily. We all know to well what happens once hackers mod online games. I like the knowledge that right now Killzone or MAG are free from hackers like Modern Warfare 2 is plagued with. I gave up playing that online after 3 weeks cause of that issue.
Most of you need to grow up and stop complaining about the evils of Sony for taking away a feature. Which I’m almost certain only 1/3 of everyone who posted to this thread use. Does it suck? Yes, I have the 80 GB phat PS3 but if I wanted to run Linux I’ll build a PC to run Linux not use my gaming console to do so. PC parts are so dirt cheap now you can build a VM farm to do the same thing.
Bottom line people grow up, find a girlfriend, and stop complaining about Linux.

Sony removing a feature that was already paid for or limiting ur access to the psn should you choose not to update are both illegal business practices. This is the issue.
