The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

Great job SONY at taking away all functionality from the system that “..only does everything” and soon enough will not do anything. One day, after you update (take away) the ability to watch my Blu Ray movies I will be content just staring at green and blue lights and the sounds of fans buzzing. I commend you guys on blindsiding customers that have shelled plenty $$$$ especially that bought fat (more expensive) PS3’s with options that were promised. You’re blackmailing people to update and this will not go well with me and with many others. I was always a loyal MS XBOX customer until the PS3 and now I have bought my XBOX 360 (the other day) and have PAID, yes paid for their online service. Come to think of it, Sony is making the same mistakes that Sega did. Sega released new stuff that totally screwed their customers and then when they finally released a good solid console (Dreamcast) most stayed away from it. This is going to happen to the PS4 as a result of what they are doing to the PS3.
It will be funny and sad at the same time. Sony will fall as a result of the same sort of mistakes that others have fallen for before them.
Read up on Sega and compare. It’s amazing how stupid these companies are and they never learn from the mistakes of their competitors.

The problem with Sega was that it had great first-party games and yet had mediocre third-party support and awkward hardware design that dragged it down into the tar pits. I mean, who in their right mind would permit a console to exist that was ugly as all sin,and later slim it down only to add five or six freakish peripherals onto it and make ZERO PROGRESS on quality games? What geniuses could conjure portables with fantabulous screens and weigh them down with bulky cases while these same portables blew through batteries like the modern-day Ford Explorer gobbles up gasoline? Someone before me was absolutely right in that nobody gave a crap about it until the Dreamcast emerged. And yet, it was marketing that ultimately felled the beast, for Sega had the games, but it couldn’t make the Dreamcast do much else but games at a time when the populace wanted more from their stuff.
Say Sony, what the heck have you done with this DSN thing? I’m getting DNS errors all the time when checking certain websites via the browsers and when logging in on PSN. Instead of fixing things you guys only make things worse with every single update!

Why does everyone want Google Chrome?? We should not be supporting Cloud Computing. Before you know it you will not even own an a actual computer. All you will have is an access to point to the web, on which all your programs exist.

I can honestly say I am done with the PS3 at this point. I can’t justify putting any more money into this system without knowing before hand if my purchases will work or not because Sony has asked me to choose which features I want to give up.
I have purchased several items from PSN and also have 40 disc games that are brand new…not used. If they really choose to continue this path I will look forward to going to other consoles and dump my playstation. I use YDL for my school work and like it because it is small and easy to use in my dorm. But if this is how they want to play, ill dump it and get a laptop… they are really loosing out here…and it is just stupid to think that I bought this for all of the features that they are removing…. Well THe_HeKeLS, I hope the manufacturer of your $400 keyboard disables your SHIFT, CAPS, and ENTER keys as well as your mouse’s left click – for security reasons.. And then you can come here and try to tell us that it’s not a big deal, although I think you’re opinion might have changed at that point.
So a few hundred people don’t like this. So what? You actually think Sony cares? There is no legal action that can be taken. “You hereby authorize us to provide such content [as in updates], services or software and agree that, to the extent permitted by applicable law, we are not liable for any loss of data, content, function or utility.” You agreed to this when you signed up for PSN.
Over 7000 comments by a few hundred people when there are millions who don’t use the function and don’t care doesn’t change anything.
Pretty bad timing for myself, my computer went down pretty bad and I was going to use this feature. I got ahold of a netbook from a friend and got ubuntu. Reconnected my internet just to find out the feature I was going to use is being disabled. Bad move by sony and if I didn’t purchase games etc from the Playstation Network I wouldn’t have updated. Better get an actual update back and soon or I will be taking my money elsewhere…
