The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

So incredibly dissappointed. Now that the DNS work around seems to have been patched, I think I’m going to catch up on my PS2 backlog, as I can’t bring myself to do this update. Part of me thinks that maybe Sony will see the precarious position they have put themselves into, and when it becomes obvious that they are going to have to pay out a good sum of money, they will re-enable OtherOS. Then the sane, logical side of me says that Sony has wieghed the likely cost of this action, and are prepared to pay out what they need to (if they have to), and they will NEVER re-enable OtherOS.
It could have been worse, I suppose. If they had (and eventually they probably will) decided to disable my PS2 backwards compatibility, my head may have exploded with rage.
I used to be a loyal Sony costumer. Not anymore.
Sony is now just another M1cr0s0ft to me. I hope both fail miserably.
Well, at least I still have N1nt3nd0. Now with Monster Hunter Tri being released, I can say they have good hardcore games.
Going to sell all my PS3 games (more than 30) and buy a N1nt3nd0 console.

This is certainly no April Fool’s joke. I tried doing the update last night and saw the warning that I would lose my Other OS feature. That alone deterred me from the update. Then, I tried signing into the PlayStation Network with my current firmware and it wouldn’t allow me to do so unless I do the update.
SERIOUSLY?! My PS3 is practically useless just because I want to keep my Other OS?! People who want to keep their older firmware should still be able to sign into PSN, at the very least. What would be the harm in that? It’s like Sony is making a perfectly working system partially defective. Now we’re either being forced to stay offline with our Other OS, lose the Other OS feature to regain PSN connectivity, or buy a whole new PS3 to keep the functionality of our older model.
I refuse to do the update. I’ll let it collect dust until there is a workaround for this nonsense, whether it be an official update or some type of hack (because I’m that furious).
You guys know that no law suits can be made. Sony has A LOT of fine print in their contracts for this very reason.
I think its dumb how they removed it but hey! get your head out of Phat consoles anyways the ps3 slim is here.
Haha you guys are saying your going to move to Microsoft because of this?.. the last I checked Microsoft didnt even HAVE a console that could install another OS. So right now PS3 is still top for having blu-ray, free online, ect.

i like the PS3’s OS, all i want is a stable, virus free and secure operating system to play my games, digital media and blu-ray movies and browse the web, one thing i hope sony does is add an app store, i really would like to do more on the system then what i’m able to do with it now.

I am not going to over react and start saying that I hate my PS3 like some have, I am taking a different approach.
I have always preferred the PS3 but own the 360 as well. I have never bought a multiplatform game on anything but the PS3, the only 360 games I own are exclusive titles. This update that I was forced to do (it is not optional at all, that is BS) has changed that. I will still buy PS3 games, exclusives like Uncharted and GoW titles, I will not punish myself like that.
I am also not buying Sony products when I have a choice, like when I buy a new TV in the next month or 2 (after my tax refund). I was considering a new Sony LED TV, but now will go with Samsung or Toshiba.
It is sad they did this, I used the Linux OS since I first purchased my PS3 12/07, it is unfair to remove this feature.

honestly i hate closed drm systems, to get straight to the point the ps3 game OS sucks it has not really grown much since the playstation 3 came out.Its too bad this fine piece of hardware gets all its good selling points removed in future updates. now lets compare this to something that came out after the ps3 like android ( googles phone OS ) now it would be awsome to run something like this on the ps3 because it actually runs on phones 500mhz 128mb ram yet it has more features and an app store thats growing too. if the ps3 was open it would be cool to replace the game OS. whats funny is its a phone OS and it would blow sonys lil game OS away. anyway just a thought open vrs closed ~ and a comparision of what the ps3 game OS should be now.
I as a consumer Purchased said item with the intention and belief that I could use Other OS feature so I could perform other tasks and operations as intended by SCEA which include but is not limited to testing Home brew as stated in the original ToS. How ever I did not use it for illegal hacking reasons.

Guys Im gonna say the follow & it may bring a lot of “flames” but it needs to be say: WE FANBOYS/GAMERS NEED OUR PS3!!..with or without Other OS… I just updated to 3.21 & at first I was piss off but as soon as start playing online my mood changed it… So we lose Other OS ,ok but are you willing to lose gaming on the PS3, we had almost 3 years of LINUX & it never got better (Heck even my Iphone its better than this) But we are forgetting that PSN is free!! that we like or not PS3 has got way better with updateds over time & the best games are now on the PS3…So take 5 minutes ..cool off & start compare what you getting & what your giving…& then make the rigth choice !!! Sony has just turned the ps3 into another psp in terms of piracy. Geohot said you just turned 100,000 non hackers into hakers. Look what Dark Alex did to your handheld.. Imagine what such a high profile and proven hacker is going to do now that you have basically challenged him (and all who back him) to a duel. Because of the actions you took, one year from now your system’s games are going to be worth the 70 dollar a year rapidshare account that people will but to pirate your games.. that means third parties wont be motivated to develop exclusively. sony.. you have lost.. badly
Until mar/2010, I didn’t care about h4c king or doing anything weird to my PS3 simply because I didn’t wanted to. Even I didn’t know about this Geohotz guy. How in the world, removing a feature will be a good solution to a security problem. What if your car’s air conditioning system has a failure and your mechanic just disable it to “repair it”. Then, if tomorrow another h4 cker finds an exploit in web browser, then s ony will disable web browser (feature that s ony even don’t care about updating essential plugins like flash), if after tomorrow a h4 cker finds an ex-plo1t in photos option, then s ony will remove photos feature. At the end, we will finish with just a faster ps2 with bluray (but only if bluray reading isn’t disabled because a h4 cker found an ex-plo1t on it).
I had to lose linux just because sony engineers are too lazy and they prefer to think “If something fails, just turn it off”.
I don’t get mad I get even. I just got a letter stating that they going to not reply to my enquires so it seems that Sony thinks if they ignore the consumers the problems will go away…OH REALLY?

I’m on-board with the rest of you! Not only did I discover the update and what it entailed but the same day I decided to get the full version of NCAA Football 10, which I had been playing the demo on my PS3 for weeks and finally bought it on PSN, after DL & install I went to play it and discovered it was a PSP game. Nowhere can you purchase and download the full version for the PS3. I asked for a refund and was flat denied it. Why have the demo but not the full version. Yes I should of paid more attention but I didn’t and believe this to be an easy mistake. I’ve even seen PSP games when I go to the folder on PSN for only PS3 games. Sorry I know this thread was for the update only but I am pissed not once, but twice in one day at Sony. I’ve many times thought about installing a different OS. Now it doesn’t matter, robbed my rights away from me for which I paid good money for…

Sorry about the PSP, PS3 game confusion man, but that is your fault, it’s rare when you can download a full fledged PS3 game, demos are common, downloading a 10GB+ game isn’t.
That sucks, but for that particular issue, you have to look at Sony’s side of it. You could download it, transfer it onto your PSP, and then demand money back.
Now if your point is that it wasn’t clearly enough, or obvious enough that it was a PSP game, well then I agree with you about there should be no mistake in clarity.
The ball is rolling as fast as it can, and would be rolling faster if people would get in touch with me and make contact instead of relying on me for everything. I can help facilitate this, but most people just want to sit and watch, some complain about the speed. I have offered contact info, but if you think you can do better please, have at it.

Us comsumers have a choice.
When considering a NEW TV or a new LAPTOP or CAMERA or a STEREO system, you can chooce other brands, look at the competition has to offer. I am already not re-buying a sony camera and sony laptop that already $2000 going to another company!!!
Of course I will still buy some games for the PS3 because it is a nice system, but for my next system I will probably think twice!
If sony is where they are now it is because of us – consumers. Obviously this decision was made by someone who does not care about the consumers!

Nice move sony. You now systematically without warning or option to reject push an update to disable one of the features I bought my ps3 for in the first place. You have no right to disable a feature on a product I bought. I own the system NOT you! Your company wont see another red cent from me or my family….Ever…. My children bought $150 worth of wallet funding a while back even tought I had the reuqire password on checkout option enabled. Which might I add is only required for spending the wallet funds not topping up the wallet. Which you cannot get your money back from without contacting your credit card company. After which Sony bricks your PS3 for online use. I attempted to contact them to get my money back and was told the only way was through my credit card company. After which they would remove my ability to use PSN. Letters to the legal dept and president of PSN have been ignored.

Is what we need to say, maybe if people try as hard as they did to get otherOS BACK, we could get google crome. because sony is working with GOOGLE, dont we deserve actionably sony needs to take pride in there ps3 game system, there for additional upbringing of contacting that already possible.
