PS3 Firmware (v3.21) Update

7,437 0

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

  • Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
  • Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
  • Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
  • Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

ummm exactly what fact are u stating. i have stated nothing but fact and law and given prime examples of my argument. it sounds to me like ur stating an opinion based on ur misguided understanding of consumer rights and ur obvious faulty teaching of what rights we recieve upon purchasing ANYTHING hardware or software.

  • @MYself.

I fail at math. $30K not $300K. Just did it to show myself that’s a lot of stock and that mostly I agree with financial, but time will tell.

  • yay, another batch of bricked ps3’s do to F/W

    Way to go Sony!!!

  • Sony I will never buy a Sony entertainment product again. Today I just returned my Bravia 52″ to best buy , I replaced it with a non Sony led tv. I didn’t update my system and don’t plan to. I had to work 2 jobs to afford the ps3 back when it first came out I bought every launch title as well even the lame gundam game. I took all the jokes from friends the boomerang, the grill, etc all because I saw the value of my investment and trusted you to deliver on your promises.

  • Fixstars announced they will no longer be working on the CodecSys Personal for the PS3 Linux system. Which was supposedly a fast MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 converter… I guess people in Japan used it encoding HQ movies I guess.

Also says this is in fact due to Sony’s release of Firmware Upgrade 3.21.

  • @5162 erkan_

Nice catch. I got a screenshot of it. ;-)

    Classy, Sorny. Classsssyyyyyyy.

  • Judging the financial impact based on stock price now is premature. This case is very little known — I wouldn’t be surprised if almost totally unknown on Wall Street.

Add to that that it is very hard to tell if and how much Sony will loose on this. As much as I’m against this horrible decision I suspect their loss is not going to be huge since thye always have the option of restoring the functionality if the situation goes out of control and they get many lawsuits. In fact that’s what I’m opening for :) If they only get few complaints they could either pay out or let it play out in court.

From time to time, SCE may provide updates, upgrades or services to your PS3™ system to ensure it is functioning properly in accordance with SCE guidelines or provide you with new offerings. Some services may be provided automatically without notice when you are online, and others may be available to you through SCE’s online network or authorized channels. Without limitation, services may include the provision of the latest update or download of new release that may include security patches, new technology or revised settings and features which may prevent access to unauthorized or pirated content, or use of unauthorized hardware or software in connection with the PS3™ system. right there it is in black and white. straight from the eula

  • I had the ps1 the japan psx the ps2 withhdd a slim and phat psp… Aside from the psp systems which did include a pspgo ( untill I returned it this morning ), I sold my older systems because of backwards compatabilty and promised support but of course you took that away but I was just glad the majority of my 400combined titles played “okay”.

  • looks like everyone here is trying to get their online law degrees as we speak.

  • @5165: Good point. But the wording is bad. I actually read it as if it retained old functionality and I thought it was just something they forgot to change in this F/W update since it is the first one to outright remove functionality. Your reading is probably correct. Not that it would have made a big difference either way.

  • @ punisher18

It’s a shame you now have to watch an inferior TV set.

  • This sucks I just put Linux on there within a few hours before the update was released, and now it’s gone. Great.

  • @5177 thiim82:

I rather think this whole update is bad, but at the same time I’m a realist and tend not to look for conspiracies around every corner. I would imagine that the documentation for most, if not all, these firmware updates contains some similar language somewhere–just more of a technical matter than anything.

  • Update normally means to add, to enhance. This is downgrade 1.00

  • @5179 FritoZ:

Did they make him LARP to get the job as they did with “The Tester” kids?

  • Add me to the handful of others who had their system bricked by this update.

  • lostinplainsight

LOL the rest of the blog is dead no more then 50 comments between 3 post. HA HA HA

  • I’m so overjoyed that SONY did this i mean i love how i lost savedata, get to redownload patches, lost movies, games, & pictures. Also thank you so much for making the descision as to what gamesaves i can copy so that i could waste my time on the game just to have a upgrade / update downgrade our systems and cause us to reformat because we decided to use the feature that you provided for us in the beggining. Oh yes thank you oh so much im sure you just lost a good amount of fans i hope you’re proud of your decision to remove this option and cause a forced loss of data if you want access to the PSN, im sure that microsoft will be seing a new rise sales because you couldnt figure out a better course of action to take in order to resolve the issue with someone hacking into the ps3. Bravo SONY bravo.

  • @51580 Sponge-worthy: I think you misunderstood my point. I at no point thought it was a conspiracy. From the beginning I just thought it was some standard language they had in all updates. However, I actually read it to imply that the update retained functionality (might make sense to have such a standard sentence in there so ppl will install your update) that they had forgot to remove for this particular update that doesn’t retain functionality. However, now I agree that the intended meaning is that you don’t need to install previous updates. BUT, you gotta admit that the sentence can be read the other way too.

  • No just a stock holder and some one that understands that in business there are certain customers that are zero sum customers. Meaning that the resources required to make certain customers happy will never allow you to make a profit on them. Any good sales training will tell you that you need to rid yourself of these customers ASAP.

  • Update? More like a Downdate. Sony, I did NOT waste £600, wait 1 year for any good exclusives just for you to remove one of the main reasons I bought a PS3, Appauling.

  • I like how the ones who are here just to be here. Cause if this didn’t affect me I would just read through the posts humming the “it sucks to be you song”
If people are really this lonely get a cat. Seriously, are you really that pathetic in RL? You remind me of the drunks at the club who always have to have the last word, no matter how many times the bouncer opened the door with your head to show you out. We don’t care, go away cause I for one pay no attention whether your right or wrong. You’re just in the way.

Nothing but an online opinionated speed bump.

  • change dsn in internet settings worked.. 67.202.81.137 thanks for that, can use all the features i paid for again..

  • this update is so bad if thats how you even can call it, sony “updated” the system by taking a very useful feature instead of giving something in the same update to balance it, maybe if you gave a new function like IMO fix/update the internet explorer that lags a lot and even freeze not to mention it DON’T SUPPORT THE VIDEOS IN YOUR OWN BLOG, people would have considered updating their fat PS3 (i would).
If you knew other os was a risky feature then why the hell did you even put it, not everyone uses it for hacking/whatever, some people actually used it as his/her own PC like i did, my PC is like 9 year old and when i found out about other os i immediatly installed Linux so i could have more powerful computer.

  • I am not happy about the loss of functionality required to keep my system up to date. I recently could not play any of my downloaded games because of a calender glitch. I found it disturbing that games I legally paid for could be rendered useless because of the DRM and a clock bug. Now Sony wants to take away a feature on my console and if I don’t comply I can’t continue to play online games I paid for like Warhawk.
They have been hacking away at the number of features the PS3 has with all of the hardware revisions and now Sony wants to hack my PS3 too.
So far it seems the biggest security risk to me is the outdated web browser. Now I wonder if they will fix that or just amputate it. Whats next?, where will it stop?, I say here and now.

  • im not updating until something revolutionary comes out that trumps losing an item i had on the ps3 since 2006

  • Lemmy_TwoPutt: That’s a very shortsighted way of looking at things. I agree you should just screw unreasonable customers cause they certainly exist. But don’t mess with reasonable customers by taking away paid-for features after sales. Even if they are not significant in numbers to warrant a continued support OtherOS (as it is in this case) the whole affair will leave a very bad impression of the company. Other customers realize that while they may be not affected by this particular insult, there’s a risk the same might happen to them next time they have a problem with, say, their TV and either can’t find a F/W update (because there’s no money in making them for old TV’s) or find that installing one takes away another useful feature they had come to like. It’s very important for a company to be trustworthy especially when we are talking products customers expect to use for a number of years.

  • @5187 Lemmy_TwoPutt

First off, massive lulz. Second, no good business model involves losing customers XD It might involve changing customer expectations or shifting focus to potential customers, but never leaving existing ones. You’re not generally in business long if you leave the people that put you there :) Also, you argument doesn’t really apply as there are no resources needed to maintain the happiness of the linux crew. If Sony wanted to drop support for OtherOS that’s their business, but to remove the feature entirely is bad news. Obviously, this decision is not about “zero sum customers”, but more likely about GameOS/security. Best of luck forming coherency in your next post.

PSN, current online games, and OtherOS are still an option if you bypass the fw check. Secure your functionality by performing the following,

    1) google “tutorial bypass ps3 fw update”
    2) follow instructions
    3) DO NOT UPDATE
    4) enjoy existing functionality

If it helped you then pass it along.

  • @thiim82

As I said earlier in this blog whay aren’t people chatising Geohot? He is the reason that Sony had to do something, instead people are applauding him and using his pirate FW. If people what correctly place some of the blame I wouldn’t even be on here. Poeple on here act like he is a savior when he was the root casue of this issue to begin with.

  • @5187 Lemmy_TwoPutt:

Very good point, and well put. Though, I think we can all agree, this may be a significant blow to their image. This SONY is not the same as the SONY of 5 or 10 years ago.

  • Worst update ever. Sony was really setting themselves apart from the XBOX strategy of limiting the options of their customers, but now it seems that might be changing. It’s a real shame. I will install the update, but I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come.

Does anybody know of any decent & free cloud desktops that run on the PS browser?

  • its a good thing i dont play online that much or i would be a little more ticked off about this whole thing.i do use linux and my point has always been if they can get rid of one feature;why not another?its all about precedent.if they get away with it than other companies will do the same.what if your p.c. wouldnt work anymore because microsoft released an update killing windows xp for window 7.i personally wish someone from sony would say something to all the unsatisfied customers.we are the loyalists who bought this system and peripherals before the price break.you are supposed to take care of the “regulars.”when the gimmicks, the AAA titles, and good reviews are gone.they are the ones that stand by you.

I know what they are. What is your definition of these customers? Each business has their own, I don’t know what Sony’s is.

There are other things such as word or mouth, influence which they need to take into account.

FY2010 will tell the story. I’ll wait I have nothing else to do.

  • Everyone asking for new features remeber that in a couple of months your PS3 will be a 3D capable Blu-Ray player for the cost of $0 dollars, that seams like a pretty good trade to me.

  • @5196 Lemmy_TwoPutt

I like to make enough time in my life to blame everyone. However, at the end of the day it was Sony’s lazy decision to remove the option entirely. No one forced their hand, they can always back out if they suddenly realize their idea was horrible. Hackers hack; companies will need to figure out rational actions as a response.

Thanks for posting, this one was much better than the last.

  • change dsn in internet settings to 67.202.81.137

if you want psn acess without updating

  • Lemmy_TwoPutt sure sounds like a BIG Sony fan or actual Sony staff posting on here… lol

  • @ zepala

So Geohot did his hack just for fun? No he did to allow bootlegged PS3 games to be played. What is Sony gaining by taking away this feature?

  • @5196 Lemmy_TwoPutt

i’m mad at Geohot too because its his fault this happened but what you need to understand is that with this sony started a war with hackers, by taking this option you dont stop them, now you forced them to start making CFW at the cost of people that doesnt even care about this, they never stop, even if you take the other os feature they will find a way around, maybe another feature and will you take that one too?

  • @5196 Lemmy_Twoputt: No matter what Geohot did (and I’m not saying I think he did/didn’t do anything wrong/illegal), it can never enable Sony to take action against innocent users using the system for authorized and legal purposes. Besides, Geohot exploited a feature that was there to begin with so if anything that’s Sony’s fault. Had Geohot not been there someone else would have found this error sooner or later. Everybody knows consoles can have vulnerabilities and that’s just a business risk. Sony should have understood this when allowing OtherOS. They can’t just run away from their promises due to the actions of one guy. If Sony believe they have a case against Geohot, then go after him; sue him or disable his system. Disabling the functionality for everyone and then hinting it’s because of Geohot is pathetic and wrong on so many level.

  • @ Lemmy_TwoPutt

Why didn’t you argue on that :

“Geo is the perfect excuse for SONY to stop OtherOS on FAT PS3.
Open your eyes, they had removed this functionnality on the Slim before Geo talk of his hack. Don’t lie, if it took 4 month to SONY to make a downgrade to remove OtherOS on FAT, they had done some R&D for the slim before it comes to the market.”

Instead of telling me ‘piracy’ stories …

  • great Im being modded again. . .

  • Just give in and join the terrorist. Sony is talking action for the greater good. Again what does Sony have to gain by making this change? My TV I bought 5 years ago doesn’t work with out cable or a converter box anymore does the goverment or Sony owe me somthing for that?

  • @5207 Lemmy_TwoPutt

Lemmy, Lemmy, Lemmy, try not to be so paranoid. I’m pretty sure geohot did this for same reason as other hackers:

    1) acknowledgment/accolades
    2) the challenge
    3) the homebrew crowd

I haven’t read anything to the contrary, have you? Now if you think hackers = pirates then you should bring yourself up to date with the scene before making more claims. Try and relax more, maybe play a game or two, or set up a proxy :)

  • Tomorrow that someone will find a way to play copied games sony will disable gaming on PS3 too…….pathetic….

  • @5212 Lemmy_TwoPutt :
    >>> “Join the terroorist”

For a moment I thought higher of you. The only terrorist here is Sony. Or actually it isn’t terrorism. It is more akin to vandalism and tyranny (may be not legally, but from a user perspective).

  • TERRORIST !!!

Whow, you talk like a represetative man of governments !

He is a terrorist because he hacks HIS HARDWARE ?
I’m a terrorist because I don’t find any way to blame him, and because I don’t support SONY in the way they consider their customers.

You’re the true terrorist, because you sell our liberty to a private compagny !

  • wow lemmy
can you tell me what the greater good is and who it is benefiting?is it the majority in numbers or influence;and about your converter box.the government gave everyone months to get ready.they sent out pamphlets and put it on tv.i havent seen one newsletter, text message,or e-mail concerning this.

  • @5212 Lemmy_TwoPutt

    Too funny XD

“Just give in and join the terrorist.”

    Emo much?

“Sony is talking action for the greater good.”

    Sure, they’re regular heroes XD

“Again what does Sony have to gain by making this change?”

Perhaps better support and resources for the GameOS with improved security. But who really knows eh?

“My TV I bought 5 years ago doesn’t work with out cable or a converter box anymore does the goverment or Sony owe me somthing for that?”

Well I guess that depends on what Sony and the government promised to provide to you. How about you clue us in on what that was. . .
