If so, seek help, but also, check out Metal Slug XX, coming February 23 to a PSP system near you (preferably yours).

Metal Slug XX explodes with the same winning formula of over-the-top action and cartoon mayhem that’s kept Metal Slug a premier franchise for over a decade. Frantic and fun, serious Metal Slug fans and casual gamers alike can relive the glory and charm of old school cooperative arcade play, teaming with a friend via ad-hoc multiplayer to outrun and outshoot hundreds of enemies and liberate as many prisoners as possible.

And there’s more here than just running and gunning, although as the test of time has proven, the running and gunning in this series can stand alone pretty darn nicely. There’s also a Combat School, which offers Metal Slug veterans a chance to put their cred on the line in over 70 challenging mission-based trials.

Ultimate Metal Slug fans can purchase Leona, a seventh playable character with her own unique abilities, via PlayStation Store for just 99 cents!

To celebrate the game’s announcement and/or upcoming release, we’ve got a small handful of rare collectibles to give away.

Metal Slug XX Underwear

First off, FOUR random commenters will get some nifty Metal Slug boxers. They’re not quite for wearing, although we’re sure as long as you’re good about keeping things under control that they’ll last you a nice long time, but they’re certainly the perfect prize for a Metal Slug fan to show off. Guffaw at your friends as they look with envy at your striped blue and white authentic Metal Slug boxers.

We’ve also got NINE Japanese promotional posters to give away. Nothing says hardcore like a poster in a language you and/or your friends may not speak!

All you need to do to be eligible, aside from being a resident of the United States or Canada, is comment under this post in response to the following: what is your favorite aspect of Metal Slug? We’ll randomly choose winners and get in touch with you!

I remember buying MS3 MVS for my Neo Candy 29, hope this is another classic!

  • My favorite part of Metal Slug is that they’re still being made. There aren’t enough 2D side-scrollers any more.

  • I love the crazy 2d sidescrolling action!

  • Looking good!

  • I love metal slug because the only thing better than a side scrolling shooter is co-op

  • Epiiiiicccc. Metal Slug FTW.

  • I love the humor in the games. It’s so over the top and hardcore and I love it when supernatural entities are involved *Like the aliens*

Anyways, can’t wait for this game. The original Metal Slug X got me into the series. Heck I bought the Metal Slug Anthology on PSP! I think I’m ready for some more metal slug action on it aswell.

    Thanks SNK/Atlus!

  • Yay! Metal Slug!

  • MACHINE GUNS! HEAVY WEAPONS! AND ROCKET LAUNCHERS! OH MY!!!

  • I like the part where stuff blows up.

  • Let’s do this, Ralf is my man. This better not be 39.99, no handheld game should be more then 30 dollars.

  • Metal Slug was great for the comic-sense and animation: If you ate to much food, you became fat. You could turn into a zombie and spit a stream of blood. LOL ahhh memories.

  • Nice, Metal Slug is such a great serie.

  • Wicked spritework and Fiolina Germi (she’s so cute…)

  • I really hope you’re making SMT4 and many other SMT games for the PS3 or even the PS2.

  • The Randomness of this game is awesome. The greatest thing is that you can experience the game more than once with different characters and never experience the same difficulty level because of the arms they have. This is the greatest aspect of the game. The High Detailed sprites gives the old school look to it and it’s a tons of fun.
    Continue the great work.
P.s. Hoping for the Metal Slug Anime talked about in the interview from the Metal Slug Anthology Game!

  • I love the sprite animation! It’s so good and funny!

  • My favorite aspect? Saving my partner’s ass because he’s too noob, and then poking fun at him for the rest of the game.

  • I love Metal slug because it = BOOM BOOM Heaven! Contra and Konami kneel before your shooting prowess!

  • The announcer yelling “rocket launcher!” is my favorite aspect.

  • We need Maximum Impact 3

  • Great News….

Now all I need is to let my beard grow to have a good excuse to wear the shorts on the next convention.

    Metal Slug POW FTW !!!

  • Best thing about the metal slug series is the hardcore difficulty that hasn’t left the series through the years, it’s as teeth grindingly difficult as it has ever been

  • I’ll say my favorite part of Metal Slug is when you get the machine gun you can just hold down the fire button and blast anything in your path (Until your ammo runs out.)

  • I have definitely been waiting for a new game for some time. Hope they keep up the difficulty!

  • There is a rumor that this won’t be for the Go. I REALLY hope that is not true.

  • what is your favorite aspect of Metal Slug? Old school with modern flavor.

  • My favorite aspect of Metal Slug is the simple, yet fun gameplay.

  • I instantly fell in love with Metal Slug the first time I knifed a Nazi. And enjoyed it more when I shotgun blasted an enemy into pink paste.

  • Metal Slug is just one of those guilty pleasures, its a game that anybody can pick up and play and then you realize hours have just flown by. Also the character animations and graphics are amazing love the old school style.

  • Oh man having one of those posters would be awesome! I am definitely aiming for that.

My favorite aspect of the Metal Slug franchise has to be it’s lighthearted nature.
POW’s who keep rocket launchers in their
boxers, eating random assortment’s of Food and getting “Woah hoh! BIG!” and suddenly shifting your assault on General Mordon into a all out war in space with aliens is just Wacky.

And i love every little bit of it. Thank goodness metal slug is still with us all these years later. <3

  • Is this UMD only or will it also be available as a download? I don’t see anything about that in this blog post, but some other sites are saying UMD-only.

  • My favorite aspect of Metal Slug is the way of how it still keeps those 2D Graphics and it still a lot of fun shooting and killing the enemies. It’s a game my father knows and all my uncles and something I can play with them, that’s my favorite aspect of this beautiful game :D

  • I love the detailed graphics and animation in these games, how they show Morden soldiers emotion and ‘off-duty’ animations.

  • Favorite aspect of the Metal Slug series has to be the shooting.

Also, Aram, is that your actual name or do you just use it because of that whole Atlus Research And Marketing acronym or was that made around your name? If that’s not your real name, you don’t have to say it, I was just wondering, especially since getting that Faithful e-mail with A.R.A.M. in it.

I hope the capuchin monkeys don’t lose my data from that 256-bit encrypted AES tablet.

    • OnslaughtCometh,

It is my actual name. As for the monkeys, I wouldn\’t worry too much. The last time we lost any data was when we brought in Bobo, gorilla temp.

      Bobo liked to break things.

  • I don’t have a PSPgo but I’ll be waiting for the PSN version just the same…

  • The action is great, but I’ve always loved the presentation. The animation, the attention to detail, the random disembodied announcer, the “Thank You!!” you get from saving a random POW and then he says “give ’em one for me buddy!!” by giving you a RAWW-KET LAWWN-CHURR and they are all blond for some reason (maybe they’re all dyed blond by their captors to make them forget about who they are and remove their sense of individuality–social commentary!!!), it is all just awesome and makes for a great experience. Oh, yes: camels with machine guns. I am just going to throw that in there too.

  • My favorite thing about the Metal Slug series?
    RAWWWCKET LAWWWCHER!

  • Good deal and I wouldn’t mind the boxers either.

  • Ah, Metal Slug! My favorite shooter. I love its simple, but INTENSE gameplay. Just barely dodging all of those bullets and missiles and zombies intestines, and whatnot, makes you feel like a real man! Well, atleast for a moment, anyway. Haha!

Can’t wait to purchase this! My favorite shooter on my favorite handheld! And I’m totally downloading Leona on day one. I was always hoping she’d make it into the series. I know she was in some cellphone Metal Slug games in Japan, but that’s just not the same.
    I’m totally excited right now.

  • Easily the best thing about Metal Slug is knifing stuff. It’s one of the coolest things you can only really do in MS. Once me and a friend of mine were playing Contra after playing Metal Slug 5 for a while and out of nowhere my friend just ran right into an enemy. On our last life. He immediately started laughing out loud. I asked him while he just suicided and he said “I just tried to knife that guy!” It was hilarious.

  • “What is your favorite aspect of Metal Slug?”

Quite obviously, The humor. I love that this game never takes it self seriously. It’s what keeps me playing level after level.
    =)

Also P.S., I’m so buying this. You rock atlus!!

  • So I can’t wear them while playing Metal Slug? D:

  • old time 2d action.

  • i like to dodge the bullets xD, i like the visual style this game offers, the humor, the explotions this game has a lot of charming features i tell ya.

  • Next time go for FOUR XXXXs!

  • my favourite aspect is being one of side scrolling shooter and adding king of fighters characters makes it better

  • Wow, too much nostalgia in this thread. Just the names alone, King of Monsters, Metal Slug, Art of Fighting. Might as well add Fatal Fury, King of Fighters and Baseball Stars to the list. It just goes to show you don’t need the graphics standards of today to enjoy a game.

I remember playing Metal Slug in the arcades with a walkman on and drinking jolt cola. Those were the days! It’s great to see a new release with Ad Hoc party setup.

  • i just played metal slug at a local diner last night… they had a machine with KoF97 and Metal Slug X. it was deligtfully nostalgic… i miss being a kid

  • Yet another reason why I’m glad I dug out my PSP recently
