Assembled denizens of PlayStation Blog,
Do you spend your days longing for a colorful, fast-paced throwback to the good old days of arcade action games? Do you daydream about grabbing an ally and riddling wave after wave of enemy soldiers with an endless stream of lead? Does your PlayStation Portable whisper to you, asking you to sate its hunger for old school awesome?
If so, seek help, but also, check out Metal Slug XX, coming February 23 to a PSP system near you (preferably yours).
Metal Slug XX explodes with the same winning formula of over-the-top action and cartoon mayhem that’s kept Metal Slug a premier franchise for over a decade. Frantic and fun, serious Metal Slug fans and casual gamers alike can relive the glory and charm of old school cooperative arcade play, teaming with a friend via ad-hoc multiplayer to outrun and outshoot hundreds of enemies and liberate as many prisoners as possible.
And there’s more here than just running and gunning, although as the test of time has proven, the running and gunning in this series can stand alone pretty darn nicely. There’s also a Combat School, which offers Metal Slug veterans a chance to put their cred on the line in over 70 challenging mission-based trials.
Ultimate Metal Slug fans can purchase Leona, a seventh playable character with her own unique abilities, via PlayStation Store for just 99 cents!
To celebrate the game’s announcement and/or upcoming release, we’ve got a small handful of rare collectibles to give away.
First off, FOUR random commenters will get some nifty Metal Slug boxers. They’re not quite for wearing, although we’re sure as long as you’re good about keeping things under control that they’ll last you a nice long time, but they’re certainly the perfect prize for a Metal Slug fan to show off. Guffaw at your friends as they look with envy at your striped blue and white authentic Metal Slug boxers.
We’ve also got NINE Japanese promotional posters to give away. Nothing says hardcore like a poster in a language you and/or your friends may not speak!
All you need to do to be eligible, aside from being a resident of the United States or Canada, is comment under this post in response to the following: what is your favorite aspect of Metal Slug? We’ll randomly choose winners and get in touch with you!
Lock and load, friends: Metal Slug XX is set for release on February 23, 2010! We’ll be back soon with more info about this explosive upcoming retro romp!
what is your favorite aspect of Metal Slug? Mine is the selection of characters.
I love the Indiana Jones-meets-Inglourious Basterds theme going for it.
My favorite aspect of Metal Slug is the amazing spritework.
@Apotheosis93: This is an enhanced port of Metal Slug 7.
I like the arcade old school feeling of using a lot of weapons and kill a bunch of enemies.. Really relaxing :p
Blowing stuff up. ‘Nuff said.
I want one of these!! Metal Slug is fantastic!!!
I may have to pick this one up. Looks like fun.
I could use a new pair of boxers, a poster too.
My favorite aspect is the variety of weapons to choose from.
What I love about Metal Slug is the awesome old-school arcade gameplay and mayhem that goes along with blowing up everything and anything in your path!
It’s weird, it’s funny, and there’s an explosion every five seconds. Enough said!
My favorite aspect is all the calories that you burn and how tired your arms get from the countless times you hammer the buttons. That and all the mayhem and explosions that continously invade the screen. Not to mention it’s one of the last, and greatest, 2-D side scrolling game series that’s still around. Hope this series lasts well into the future. It’s been a blast since I first played it in 1996.
Looks immense can’t wait :)
The classic graphics draw me to Metal Slug.
I can’t think of anything that I don’t love about Metal Slug, but if I had to pick one thing, it’s the timeless side scrolling shooting action. People will still be playing Metal Slug games twenty years from now, I know I will.
Keep making these awesome games, and I promise I’ll keep buying them.
To me, the graphics never seem to get old. I love that the most!
Blowing the stuffing out of an army that features a surprising amount of men in green.
I love the different characters and their general attitude but most of all, the fun gameplay and ridiculous scenarios that are presented. The characters keep coming back to fight the good fight! So long as I keep pumping in quarters or mashing the start button :D
Favorite aspect? Two words:
Heavy-Machinegun!!!
I love the 2D art style of Metal Slug.
2D running and gunning, riding vehicles, transformation especially zombified in metal slug 3&4,and the HUGE Boss Fight!
Love it all the way from the 1st game and like the separate route system in the stage.
My favorite aspect is how cool the weapons are in this series.
I just love blowing **** up!
Can’t wait! I already love having Metal Slug Anthology, this will just be that much better.
I love aliens and zombie puke. More please.
My favorite aspect of Metal Slug is the insanely humorous and cool jaw dropping face expression that Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving do after completing a level.
It reminds me of old school CONTRA
I love the shooting and guns and boom!!!
There is no contest: the best aspect of Metal Slug always has been – and always will be – the bizarre voice clips that accompany every weapon and friendly pick-up in the game, which have been burned into my skull from years of burning hundreds of dollars on playing the hell out of all the Metal Slugs in the arcades. As someone who is usually not one to embrace my nerdiness in public, I think it says something that I will oft throw yelling “HEAVY MACHINEGUN!” into a conversation if I can find a way to slide it in there (and I use that term incredibly loosely); of course, this is usually followed up by a self-imposed Tourette’s flurry of me yelling all the Metal Slug weapon names I can remember – further cementing the fact that I like this series a little too much and that all my efforts of not being a “nerd” are for naught – but what can you do?
awesome these games are so much fun, woo hoo for the boxers get my geek on!
