I have a PS3 40GB and its been working fine for the past year. I got it June 08. I was playing numerous games and using it as the center of my entertainment system. I turned on the system to continue playing and upgraded to the latest 3.01. Now my system does not play any kind of media disc.
Why do they think firmware is not the problem? I do not wanna pay 150 for a repair….

Ok, i’ve downloaded the new update for PSHome, 3.01. And since then I can’t get on HOME! I downloaded it this afternoon, and it gets as far as the “Initializing” screen on sign in and goes no further. It freezes every time. What is going on here?

I am reading alot of posts that people are still saying that this is just a hardware issue. Have you all been reading these 800 posted and the more than 1000 on the other one?
I used my system 2-3 hours a day, more on the weekend. The second I downloaded the FW update, my games / movies froze after 5-10 minutes. I understand that this has not happened to the “masses”, but I think there are enough people (who are posting and may not post), that have had the same exact problem. What do I think we all want? Just a statement that there may have been a problem with the FW update on certain systems and that Sony will stand behind their product.
Its been exactly a month for me without my games. I play every day when I come home from work to relieve the stress of professional life. The last thing I want to hear from customer service is that this is my problem and the FW couldn’t have had anything to do with this. I don’t pretend to know everything about how my PS3 works (but I have had a computer for 27 years), but I just cannot accept (and pay $150) that this is my responsibility to fix something that worked just fine for 20 months, and then stopped working the second I downloaded the update.
we will never know how many people are having this problem i also have been with out my PS3 for a month now. I got Madden and played 1 game updated to 3.0 and now i have never played it again. We will never know the real number because not everyone is online I have plenty of friends that dont go online so they dont have to update. All i want is a statement saying they screwed up and this is what we are going to do to fix it. I know people are saying it is a coincidence so Sony open up and say you will fix this and see how many PS3 you really get back this is the only real way of knowing how many people are affected. Maybe they get 100 maybe the get back 1000’s
I downloaded the UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves demo from the USA and European store both can’t install on my PS3s they stop installing at 14%. I got a 80GB MotorStorm Bundle and another PS3 the regular 80GB model. And i try restoring the settings and re-downloading the demo nothing works the first beta was fine on both PS3. All my PSN buddies are playing it now the demo except me because of that damn problem i only have firmware 3.01 install. Please let me know any new update some of my other buddies are having the same problem too.

Someone who has linux on their ps3 check and see if blu-rays play through linux but not the xmb. I’m not sure how the ps3 system works but if we come up with evidence we will be better off. Ive tried two hard drives and all the “trouble shooting” instructions on the ps3 website. I have ubuntu on one of my hard drives but I don’t have the ps3’s disc drive properly installed.
Haven’t been able to play any games for 2 weeks now and the sad part is the day my ps3 went dead was the day i bought infamous. I had update 3.0 but while playing the ps3 froze so i turned it off then on again with the surprise that now the ps3 wouldn’t read any disc so i updated it to 3.01 and still nothing. I’ve tried every single option in the recovery menu but nothing works so I hope that sony at leasts recognizes that they did screw up but they will fix it because if it wasn’t for us, the consumers, they wouldn’t even exist. We’re not even asking for money or a new ps3 all we want is for them to recognize their mistake and fix it.
Has anyone tried this? I haven’t had the issue – yet – but see if this works for anyone… I got this tip off of a forum, so try it if you want….
Boot your PS3 into safe mode:
1. Put your PS3 into standby (red light).
2. Hold your finger on the on button until it goes back into standby (red light) and release finger.
3. Now hold your finger on it again and ignore the first beep (on) ignore the second beep (video reset), until you hear two fast beeps and release finger.
4. Plug in your controller with the USB and press the PS button.
5. Select “Rebuild Database” from the menu (won’t delete any accounts,music,movies, or games)
6. Test to see if freezing continues, if so try “Restore File System”.
Just like any one else …the new updates (3.1) makes my system to freeze every time i go to ps3 home ….Didn’t have this trouble as much as it was before with the previous updates…so please Sony fix the problem ….as soon as possible…
Thank you swiss107, I followed your advice and GAME are repairing my console free of charge. I stated the “Sale Of Goods Act 1979” and their customer service was excellent and not at all defensive, for this reason alone I would recommend buying from GAME in the UK. My 60 GB console was purchased on the original launch day back in 2007.

In my case, yes, I tried all that. Still no BD showing up in the XMB when I put them in. I have heard it making a difference for other people, but only for so long before it freezes and the drive is lost again. That right there tells me that the problem is likely software related and not the BD dying.
It sounds like the crashes are leaving the system (or just the part related to the disc reading) in a bad state. Could be in the main firmware or in the firmware directly on the BD drive.
If it is indeed a hardware problem brought on by the update (spinning the drive faster, causing more heat etc) then Sony should fix it free of charge. And I’m not talking about sending a refurbed machine back in return. I want my same PS3 that I know hasn’t had the crap beat out of it for the past three years.
well they dont have anything like that in the US. Since I got my system from Walmart 2 years ago if I went in and said to fix my PS3 they would laugh at me. We arent protected here these places can do what ever they want to and we have to take it. We are living in a [DELETED] economy no one has money but we are expected to pay 150 to fix our PS3’s sorry the little bit of extra money i have goes towards diapers and formula.
I updated to PS3 v3.01 firmware recently. As of 10/2/09 I still cannot play Uncharted, Drake’s Fortune. The game freezes when you see a spinning coin after you enter the game and see the Naughty Dog Logo. LBP and Ratchet and Clank still play fine. BD Rom disc drive is operating normally.
I have called support and tried the following:
1. Deleting the “save data utility” for the game.
2. Formatting the PS3 system settings (no erase of all save data)
3. Making sure all updates are applied (PS3 v3.01 and Uncharted v1.10)
Support phone line for PlayStation claimed this was the first time they had heard of this problem and I said they were crazy. At this point, they cannot help me short of sending my PS3 in for a repair.
Sony, I know this blog is not the BEST avenue to ask, but…
…Are there plans for a future firmware update that will allow me to play Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune?
Has anyone else still been locked out of Drake Fortune? I feel bad for all with the BD rom drive messing up.

anOKlumberjack, that is the EXACT same problem I’m having. I thought it was an issue with the disc so I was going to return/swap it for a new one…now I’m not so sure. I’ll bet it has to do with the new update, but it doesn’t seem to be affecting everyone as the 3.01 update “fixes” Uncharted for most people. It freezes in various places for me. Furthest I’ve gotten is difficulty select, then it locks up. It’s the only game of mine it does it to. I’ve got the 40gb ps3. I have no idea if/when they’re planning to address the issue. So far it sounds like Sony is trying to scam people out of $150 for a “repair.” Eff that.
i wondering if it’s an issue with everyone that incrementally updated their firmware (ie: 2.xx to 3.00 to 3.01)? i always wait to update for issues to arise and i didn’t update from 2.80 to 3.0 and went right to 3.01. i’m wondering what was removed from the 3.00 to 3.01 update cause 3.00 is about 17kb or 18kb larger than 3.01. so apparently something was wrong with 3.00 that was removed from 3.01.
is there anyone that incrementally updated not having issues? i skipped 3.00 and went right to 3.01 from 2.80 and i have a 60gb launch unit with no issues so far.

after the 3.1 update i been havin problems with the playstation network. i cant even playa a game. everytime i deside to play a game i get loged off the internet. im not likein this at all. is anyone have the same problem like me?

Aside from all the other issues I’ve listed above, I did have some disconnection issues with the network earlier. I think it was just LittleBigPlanet’s server being wonky for a bit though. Haven’t tried Playstation Home yet. I’ll have to see if I’m having issues with that as well. Tried Uncharted a few more times today. Gets to the first load with the spinning coin…just keeps spinning forever. PS3 shows HDD activity for the first 20 or so seconds, then nothing.
Hi everyone i have my PS3 80GB BW compatible bundle edition i was playing it fine until i update it to the last version 3.01. The BD doesn’t recognize even the game and is freezing constantly. i tried the system restore, and nothing happens and i want to know if i can delete the FW and SONY please fix it soon as possible i want my Ps3 back in function make the FW compatible with old PS3 not only the new ONES thank you

i don’t normally make a big fuss about stuff like this but im getting pretty pissed now.
I have an European ps3 80 GB.Like most of you guys(probably at least)3.00 caused some of my games to glitch,freeze or whatever.Hell,sometimes it doesn’t even detect the disc.
PS:Dunno if its important,but my ps3 came with a copy of Littlebigplanet.
The strange thing is,it still detects dvd’s and music cd’s.3.01 just did nothing for me.
I got Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 today,and it keeps crashing ,freezing and whatever.I am really starting to lose my cool at this point.Please fix it.
I am like every one else posting, BR games and movies freeze after 10 minutes and have problems reinstalling games after formatting HD. This happened the second I downloaded 3.0 and 3.01 did not fix it. My 80g BC has played a DVD and GOW2 for an hour and a half.
I have now tried all 16 of my games and I can actually get one to work. Hot Shot Golf Out of Bounds has played for an hour 3 times now.
Sony, doesn’t this support the theory that this is a software issue? My opinion, if hardware issue then nothing would even start working. Most people posting says works for 10 minutes then freeze. Btw, some people are saying that they think it overheats due to spining faster. My PS3 is no hotter after 10 minutes of playing than it normally was.
Does anyone else have some games that will work while others freeze? My games that I tried to play and froze were MGS4, GTA4, Madden 09, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, SWFU
My PS3 also still freezing with Motor Storm, MGS4, COD4 and Ninja Gaiden 2. Please fix it soon Sony or i will never buy a SONY product again!
Update: Turns out the issue I had with Uncharted was the disc itself. Even though it looked perfectly fine, it was defective. Swapped it out at Gamestop and the new copy works just fine. Not having any issues with Playstation Home either. I do hope for the sake of the rest of you Sony puts out a patch right away to fix the problems you’re having. Good luck, guys!
anyone know if Sony has addressed this issue? its frustrating that i cant even play my copy of killzone, SFIV and infamous and none of my BR movies want to play… Cd’s and dvd’s work tho…

I have the same with ninja gaiden 2.Extremely pisses me off,and usually i have a good self control.
Sometimes the game wont load,and the game freezes after like what,15 minutes?Grrrrrrr.
Same with Devil May Cry 4.And the Godfather 2.And a couple of other games.Ah well,lets just hope they will fix it.
This is rediculous I updated to version 3.0 last month and only played fifa demo since the game came out on friday, tried the game and it didnt work… tried all other formats and they didnt work either!
What the hell are Sony playing at?!!!?

ok, this is pissing me off if you ask me, my 60gb ps3 was working fine up until the fw 3.01 update which screwed up the ps3’s disk reading capability(it cant read ps3, ps2, ps1, or dvd movies), and it came RIGHT after i updated to 3.01. you folks at sony HAVE to fix this issue because a device that costed 500+ dollars(2 years ago) is suppose to last AT LEAST 4- 6 years. now i phoned the customer support people and they said, “We never heard of anyone having these issues before, you should send it in to us so we can fix it.” (LOOK, for crying out loud, LOOK AT HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM!!) i am not willing to fork out 100+ more dollars for them to repair my system, its the update’s fault, YOUR UPDATE SONY!! as of now i will NOT pay to repair my perfect condition ps3, nor pay for another ps3 that might ALSO experience the same problem. stop scamming us! im going to continue to file complaints against you folks at sony, stop forking out money out of our wallets and fix this issue.

Seems like Bill Hunt of thedigitalbits probably got some pressure from Sony to back off. Note that he doesn’t say where he got his information, or who he talked to, or how despite the hundreds of posts here he has decided that the problem affects, in his words, only a VERY few users. Also no info on how Sony is “resolving” the issues – “resolving” could well just mean “we are telling our customers to pay to have their consoles fixed”.

I downloaded the update and now the blu ray player does not work at all. When researching on the internet it appears that the problem is occurring for multiple users. Has there been a solution for this other than paying $149 for a refurbished one?
BTW I still can play ps2 and regular dvd’s on it. Also right before the update I watched a blu ray movie. the problem is obviously software and not hardware? Sony please help?

I called Sony USA, and was that lady **bleep**y, she didnt know what to do, and all she said was send money.
You’d think they’d realize it’s a lot cheaper to keep existing customers than to gain new ones. Now they’ve just lost thousands. Don’t worry, due to word of mouth, this number will increase greatly.

My ps3 60Gb (ps2 compatible) has the same issues. 10-15 min playing BD movie/game and then freezes. In Killzone 2 the ps3 freezes while loading the levels. Not playing at all…
In uncharted, I can play for a while but I can’t hear the music/dialogs (I can hear FX… ), some textures don’t load correctly(not all).
I can “fix” the read errors with a soft reset and then turn off with the rear button. Wait 10-15 secs and turn on again.
This apparently restores the read capabilities and show the BD icons in XMB again. But if I try to play/see movie the freeze problem start again.

Its an absolute joke, I called them and they offered me a repair or refurbished model. They make it sound as if they are doing you a favour by saying oh you have 2 options lmao!!
They also denied that the firmware can cause the blue ray drive to stop working.. Im not bloody stupid, I know it CAN and could be due to a number of reasons.
I have already written to watchdog in the UK and I will be contacting econsumer tomorrow also as many other organisations as possible because to me it is the priciple that they are denying it!!

To add on to my previous comment. i would be a wee bit happier if sony fixes the ps3’s for free as it is THEIR FAULT for our ps3’s to fail. I mean even if it isnt the firmware update, maybe its the hardware, YOUR HARDWARE sony, why shall we pay for something that we had nothing to do with.
for example, if you were being blamed for something you didnt do, and they ask you to pay 150 dollars, would you pay that 150 dollars. NO, NOBODY would pay for that!
plus sony, to add to that, do you notice what we’re in right now, we’re in a recession right now, money’s really hard to come by nowadays, its not like we have 150 dollars laying around ready to be spent.
most of us consumers/ gamers bought the ps3 expecting a great gaming experience that would last us at least 4 years, i dont know if thats true anymore. most of our ps3’s havent made it past its second year in use and its breaking down. please sony, the only things i am asking you to do is to fix our systems free of charge, im sure you folks would be pretty pissed to pay a fee for something we didnt do.

I agree with everything you stated. Unfortunately Sony is in a tough situation as well. They went deep in debt by pushing the blu-ray format and most of their monetary losses came by including blu-ray players with every ps3. They don’t have the money to afford to fix all of the thousand or so systems that have no doubt been permanently damaged by this new update. Which means they’re going to try their best to deny that they caused this problem and try to recoup their losses on the ps3 by making customers shell out $150 to fix it.
Like many others customers of PS3 40GB, my PS3 doesn’t play any blue-ray disc.
How Sony can publish a firmware (obligatory update!) that has a problem like that!?
I’m sure it’s not a hardware problem, because PSHome is not running too.
