Its been like 3 weeks since my ps3 was able to read disks. I am growing insaner by the minute.

Dude, WTF? Turn my psbrick into a gaming machine again! I just wanna play a game!
My 60 gb launch system on firmware 3.00 seems to be working fine, played it for 3 hours yesterday since the update, and probably several hours the days before that since the update but not sure. I have even installed a new game data onto it from a blu-ray disk, I haven’t tried a blu-ray movie yet though… Sound is working good, haven’t tried dvd’s or ps2/ps disks yet. I don’t think I will be upgrading to 3.01 though. There were lots of people having issues with a previous upgrade before too, thankfully I wasn’t one of them :P good luck to those of you who have had issues though. Hopefully your systems will be back up and running again in no time, with this being the second incident like this though I think I will be letting you people test the firmware for me for a week before upgrading lol
Another PS3 with blu-ray broken after firmware 3.00 update. It happened during Uncharted, the sound FX was lost in one of the levels, and then the whole system froze. Blu-ray games and movies now appear briefly on the XMB, but they do not go beyond the load screens. After that they disappear from the XMB too; i need to wait about an hour until the systems recognises a blu-ray disk again, but without eventually loading it. DVDs and audio CDs seem to be working fine. Took the blu-ray drive out to clean the lens, but when i put it back, there was no difference.
I suspect that this is a firmware issue, it can’t just have happened to so many people at the same time with such similar symptoms. And thus i fully expect Sony to fix this with an update. Soon.
PS3 60gb Euro. Bought Oct 2007
why sony won’t admit that their firmware has bugs and not fully tested…what is the best way to get their attention….youtube? media?
the version 3.01 is not an optional update…i just came back from a long vacation, left US aug 11 came back sept 7, went back to work. on sept 23 i decided to play gran turismo prologue online, it wont let me because of an update that is mandatory; i still have the version 2.8 and the ps3 is connected via hdmi…everything is working fine…since i really want to play online…i updated the firmware. after it restarted the screen is blank…checked the connections, tried the cable with my old and mostly used 2006 sony hdmi dvd player, no problem…but the ps3 is non-functional with hdmi after the update…i connected the original rgb,the analog display works, i adjusted the display to use hdmi, still a blank screen. did the reset 5 sec. suggestion from a sony rep, did nothing.
Since downloading 3.01 it has rendered my browser unusable. It never seems to load a web page and stays blank and when I try to close it my system crashes and I have to switch it off and back on again to use the controllers. Anybody else having browser issues?
I’ve had exact same experiences as a lot of people here, most recently 705. My PS3 is also an early 60gb Euro model.
Have been running 3.0 for a few days without problems, but today GTA4 starting skipping during cutscenes, sound cutout, and then the game completely crashed. Quitting the game in this crashed state causes the PS3 to try and restart, but would only stop messing around when the power was turned off.
Now I can’t run any PS3 games (
the disc doesn’t even show in the menu), but DVDs load fine.
Upgraded to 3.01 to see if that would help, but just as bad.
Well done Sony.
I cant play bluray games since the updates – have a 40gb euro model purchased in March 08.
Hope this can be sorted with a new update???
great, now some of my BR wont work.. great job Sony.
I have the original 60gb model which has worked flawlessly until the update
So..
Just called sony for the second time regarding this issue. Upgraded, WOW froze, and now the drive will not play any discs, BR or DVD. First time Sony told me it was my fault, and gave me about 30 things to do in an attempt to fix the issue.
Did them all, formatted, restore, etc, nothing.
Just found this blog and called support up, mentioned how 700 comments of system failure in 10 days is not just a coincidence, but sony kept responding:
“This is a hardware problem on your PS3(even thought it worked PERFECT prior to the update.) and not a software issue. 700 people is only a small number of the total owners. (What?!) For $150 we’ll fix it.(lol)”
ps3circleofdeath.com – grabbed domain, within the week posting all relevant sites, forums, help with this issue.
ever since this update, I’ve been having system freezing while playing games. It keeps happening at different intervals. When I press the PS button and choose “Quit Game” the system restarts, albeit slowly (like a 3-5 min wait).
uhg, guess I’ll just have to accept that my PS3 will be completely and totally useless until we get a firmware upgrade or even allow a downgrade.
@712 — Right on. I am really angry with Sony and this update that screwed my machine up.
I can’t even play SOME downloaded games (DLC) from the Sony Store. Demos too!
Please come out with an update SONY… I am begging you.
I have owned my 80 GB PS3 for 3 years without a problem until now. I downloaded firmware update 3.0 and as soon as it finished downloading I tried to play KillZone 2 and the optical drive did not read the disc. I was playing it fine before I updated it. I have tried all of my Blu-ray disc’s, DVD’s, PS3 disc’s, PS2 disc’s, PS1 disc’s and even CD’s. The optical drive does not work. I called Sony and they told me it was not a firmware issue. Funny that I am looking at this blog and I am not the only person with this problem. Sony is now going to charge me $150 to repair my system. If this isn’t a reason to jump to another console, I am not sure what is! Thanks a lot Sony…
Timothy Rodriguez.
My system has been locking up more and more with each update…
I still have problems with ps3. For some wierd reason when i play the katamari demo it never shows on recently played sec. in What’s new. It seems like its broken. Also i am still having trouble with uncharted! It’s still freezing! Please just release fw 3.10 with cross game chat and fixes for all of this. I guess i shall use my other game system…
I want cross game chat, voice messaging. plz! plz!
As with all of you, this is all very frustrating. Same story, PS3 works perfectly fine, download 3.0 update, then all of a sudden, nothing works (BluRay, PS3 games, etc).
NOT A HARDWARE PROBLEM. My opinion, if it was a hardware problem, then games world not even work. My games work for 10-15 minutes, then stop. If it was a hardware, then the games would never start and load. If it was hardware problem, then why would my BluRay movies work for 10 minutes, then freeze?
Its going on 2 weeks since 3.01 and no response from them. What do we have to do? Email websites to get the word out? All of us call customer service? (I have called 3 times). File a complaint with the Fair Trade Commission? I dunno…. ready to give up and buy another system…
In my case I gave my system to the store to get it fixed! We’ll see. It’s been a week now, still waiting!!
Just posting that I have a first Gen 60GB fat with BC and now my PS3 will 9/10 times startup to have a connection error where Bluetooth and internet connectivity does not work. I have tried a reformat and restore the system to no avail. After calling Sony, they recommend that I send it in. I think I may hold off until a new update.
I did go buy a PS3 slim for my wife’s new TV for the blu ray capability mainly. So I still have a unit to play games – but thats not the point. I paid $599 for a brick 9/10 boot ups. So much for watching blu rays on my Sony XBR6. At least my wife’s XBR9 will be here soon. Yes – we are…WERE???? Sony fans through and through – but this has me heated up – especially if others are having some major issues.
Plus, it all started that sound wasn’t being outputted through HDMI – when all the settings were correct, now the connection issues.
Don’t do it!!! Blu-Ray and Games no longer work!!! Drive no longer recognizes discs. If you want a online media player then update, but if you want full functionality of your PS3 then DON’T DO IT!!!
Seems like we should post this whole blog somewhere, MySpace, FaceBook, Twitter all the sites…Let people see that there is only ONE reply to all these posts. Having over 80% of postings in the negative, you figure Sony would post an answer or reassure a Firmware fix is in the making, but instead the townspeople are ignored!!! Thanks Sony!!! For nothing! That’s what you’ve turned most units into NOTHING!!! Let’s spread the word and get Sony to fix this NOW…
I have fallen to the great firmware update 3.01. I downloaded it tonight and now no disks work! I tried every game, movie, DVD; nothing. I sent a email to customer service and got the usual canned response. I filed a complaint with the BBB but don’t expect any resolution. I guess we can tear our units apart and use the Blu-ray player in something else hopefully. This is it for me and Sony. Should have bought the Xbox I was looking at first! Oh well, lesson learned. Never buy from Sony. I passed the word out to all poeple I know not too upgrade the firmware or don’t buy a Sony product.
Is sony doing anything? They won’t admit it but at least they are doing something in the back?
Anyone tried to fixed the issue themselves? by either hardware or software method?
My problems started after 3.0 with games freezing, intially after an hour or so, then 30 mins or so etc… until the game wouldn’t load at all. Then the PS3 stopped detecting BDs entirely. There is some speculation around that the blue rays that are failing might have been faulty or on their last legs, and that the update was the last straw (made it run too hot or something).
Haven’t done it myself but I’ve read that some people have fixed this or a very similar issue by replacing the blue ray lens. This makes me think that while the update may have triggered the failure in the first place it is now a hardware issue and will not be fixed by any further updates.
Basically Sony broke it (either due to a faulty update, or substandard components, or both), but I have to pay to fix it.
What I find ironic is lots of people who hasn’t had this problem are critising those of us who have for thinking about moving to the XBox, yet my Xbox (which I have had for 2 years) has lasted longer than my PS3 (only 18 months). From my perspective (I’m almost ashamed to say it) when it comes to build quality Microsoft wins.
I have a ps3 40bg and recently updated to 3.01 and after update it stopped playing/loading bluerays and games. My ps3 became a useless system. Sony please find a solution or let us know how to revert back to previous working firmware. I hope sony guys atleast wakeup now a give us a break from these useless updates. If anyone has any solution please help.
To quote the user: inginear
From the Thread titled “3.01 killed my ps3’s BD drive!!!”
— Begin —
the 3.0 firmware included a “feature” that increased the speed of the blu-ray drive spindle to help facilitate the faster game load times. however the issues lies with the fact that not every ps3 uses the same motor in the blu-ray drive, or same blu-ray drive for that matter. some of the drives can handle the extra speed while some others can not. if your ps3 has a blu-ray drive that can not handle the extra spindle speed then you are just sol at this point.
— End —
So yes, it is a problem introduced in the firmware, and there are three possible outcomes:
cont’d…
…cont’d
1. Sony does nothing, and everyone having BD Drive problems will have to replace their drives with hopes that the problem is solved.
2. Sony makes the faster spindle speed a configuration option, but make the slower speed the default (most logical choice!)
3. Sony finds a way to auto-detect this issue. Perhaps when a read operation fails at a higher spindle speed, fall back to a slower spindle speed and retry. If the disc can finally be read, set a high-speed kill bit to prevent this from happening in the future. Of course, this should be resetable should the drive be replaced with a new one that is compatible with a higher spindle speed.
How long will it take for Sony to fix the problem, however – who knows. They are definitely not my favorite company right now.
Dear Sony,
Quit hiding from this issue, release an official notice, and let people know you care about the troubles you’ve introduced into people’s PS3’s. You should be offering to fix this for free, not charging customers for it! It’s not our fault this problem is happening – it’s yours!
Sincerely,
An angry PS3 owner.
Will this update kill my BD drive? i have the 160gb CECHP01 version, does it support the new high speed feature? I really wanted to play uncharted, wich came with the ps3, and has a freeze problem solved by this update…
Anyway, wont do the update until im shure it wont damage my system…
Hope to get some info here…
a reliable programmer confirmed that this is due to the latest firmware update, sony upscaled the security thus affecting hdmi and bluray codes…eventually if sony will not make any public announcement re their error…this will be a major setback and sony will recall ps3’s in bulk. sony need to cross their fingers that the update did not damage the echip…goodluck sony…see you in fox and nbc news….
again…it not an optional update…we were forced to update….
sorry guys for the previous post…apparently the info re a reliable programmer is a misleading blog of an xbox user….but am still hopeful that a genuine programmer will be able to expose this….
+1 for bricked console list. My 80gb BC froze randomly while playing SFIV after installing 3.01 and hasn’t been able to read a disk since. Even tried system restore and all with no luck. Please fix this Sony!!!
proud owner of ps3 mgs 80 gig backwards unit and the 3.0 and 3.01 cause my system to be dead somone adress this problem and the answer is not pay 150 more to repair at my exspense when its your firmware that botched the sys…

There’s no way of knowing.
Why play Russian Roulette with your PS3?
Trust me, there’s no good reason for updating your firmware at this stage. Wait for the next version to come out.
When it does come out, come back to the PSN forums and look for positive signs the firmware is fixing problems.
Only then would I recommend updating your firmware.
Consider firmware v3.0 and v3.01 potentially hostile.
Just for SONY:
If my PS3 bricks because of youu next FW updates:
Before I’ll buy a PS3 SLIM I’ll buy an XBOX360.
And I’m very close to make them true.
You made a lot of people upset and broke a lot of PS3s with your untested FW update.
Still no ROLLBACK of FW
Still no REPLY
shame on you!
yeah thanks you didn’t fix anything. My system still freezes every time. How about fixing it for real this time.
Mr Eric Lempell we are waiting for an answer…please advise the rest of the consumers that have not updated their firmware not to do it or hold the update for the meantime…until sony fix the bug.
Why hasn’t this hit mainstream video game news yet? Maybe the question is not why, but how can the affected consumers get this issue in the news?
why hasn’t this issue been reported to media?
LOL at the Bruno comment. Is that movie even out yet on DVD and Blu-ray? ;)
yah R5
I have a sick blu-ray player. I had been running 3.0 for a while, then when trying to start Arkham Asylum this evening, the game symbol disappeared and it would no longer load games or blu-ray movies. Upgraded to 3.01, to no effect.
I am considering reinstalling my orginal hard drive to see what happens. Has anyone else tried this?
inreasing numbers of ps3 became non functional after the update…is that a coincidence…..
according to sony, yes, 700+ ps3’s have the tendency to brick all within the same two week period or so, and its our faults.
working on site for this now, then submitting to all local/national news syndicates and tech blogs. Will include all forums of this topic, as well as every ps3 that has gone brick, with the option for users to log-in, submit their story, and have the ps3 brick counter to increase by +1 to keep a somewhat accurate number of consoles that have been effected.
fix: affected
ps3circleofdeath.com – going live oct.5th
to those genius programmers this is now the best time to expose and confirm that the recent ps3 firmware update messed up the ps3’s bios or chip that control the hardware. it is pretty obvious that sony is guilty for not responding to these numerous complaints.
+1 to the growing list of unhappy loyal Sony consumers.
My June ’07, 60gb unit, was fine until GTA4 crashed after 3.0 update, and continues to crash after 3.01. Every attempt to play any game since results in a freeze or disc not recognised. Got lucky once with COD4, a whole 15mins!!!.. then froze while exiting back to XMB… Funnnnnnnnnnn
No coincidence, no acknowledging of a problem, no Sony fans if this continues…
