  • Oh and modderator… thanks ;)

  • I think you should keep the boxes around the friends, and the info box at the top right. There’s no way they take up too much space. Although if keeping the grey boxes on the friends list is what you decide, then please use them properly. Make the latest trophies from that user load in the box or something when you hover on the ID for a short time.

Allso, I hate to stress this point, but the large fonts are kind of stupid. And I’m in the UK, with a 60 GB launch PS3 and for some reason theres no PSN icon underneath the video section of my XMB. Which unlike some others I would actually like to see because I like the way you can just over over them and it shows the new stuff from the store.

Also for those of you that are complaining about the info ticker at the top right, you can disable it from the system settings. Please look before you make a complaint.

  • stop [DELETED] bout details and look at the big picture! PSN is STILL FREE Sony add features and so what if you don’t like the grey box on the friend list is it really going to ruin your day! Are you going to sit an stare at the list or just see who’s online right now? Sony respond pretty well to user comments so I dare say if enough peeps complain they’ll change things so if you want to spend your time moaning you’ll probably get wot u want. Me? Igot better things to do like play all the awesome games out there!

  • I thought the update was nice, but here are a few things that could’ve made it better:

    1. Why the grey boxes in the friends list? Give us some customization options, such as changing the colour, and add some info such as trophy level and number of trophies. Also, hide the boxes of friends who are not highlighted. (just show the name and avatar)

    2. Why do non-BC PS3s still have the ability to create PS2 memory card data? It’s pointless, and confuses people into thinking they may have a backwards-compatible PS3. As BC probably isn’t coming back to the PS3, remove this option from non-BC PS3s, and rename the option “Memory Card Utility”, and remove the “(PS/PS2)”.

    3. Where’s the option to change the font size? I don’t mind the big XMB icons and font, but, as I’ve seen in some of the comments, a lot of people don’t like this.

Overall, it’s a nice update, but loses points with these faults. I’ll give it 6/10.

@1054: WRONG, you CAN playback music in XMB. Just press the PS button while a tune is playing.

  • Yesterday, I tried the update and was horrified by all the ugly design changes. I ranted about them already.

But this morning, I saw what they did with the startup screen (was in the kitchen when it happened yesterday). WHAT THE….

Seriously, I have never wished to be able to go back it time as much as this.

  • OMG Sony you have to change this firmware…
I’m very disapointed with this firmware…

    – The police is too big (we’re not blind) and we need an option to change the size

    – The PlayStation Store icon in the game menu is too much, there is already a PlayStation Store Icon

    – The friendlist is awful, WE NEED TO HAVE AN OPTION TO DISABLE IT AND GET BACK THE OLD FRIENDLIST

    – What the hell happened to the PS3 boot sequence when we start a game? It disappeared! SHAME! I understand u want to delete it because the logo of the PS3 changed but at least make a new one with the new Slim PS3 Logo

I HOPE SONY WILL LISTEN TO GAMERS

  • For next update: How about adding an option to choose more resolutions than the basic 576p, 720p, 1080p.. I have 1366×768 and I would love to play with my native resolution. Now all my games and blurays look crappy. :( That’s why I like my xbox more.

  • i like it all, the info box it alot better than the other one, and im in the uk and there is no psn icon under the video. i would like the friends list differant but i still like this one.

  • Reduce the text please and speed up the whats new section.

  • The music playback during XMB usage is still possible – you need to choose 48hz for it. I don’t why Sony done something so stupid but at least we still can use XMB when listening to music.

  • I was kinda looking forward to this up date its been a while since we had a real change in the way that the ps3 feels. but after all the bad comments I’m not looking forward to this one and might not even do it.

    1. I hate the New “old style” logo. ITS [DELETED]

  • Just adding my voice to the masses. This upgrade is mostly a downgrade. The visual changes are for the worse. XMB was clean and sleek, and has been dumbed down. At least give us options!

The Store spamming is also redundant. You only need one entry point and educated users. The ‘What’s New’ page serves that purpose, directing new users to the store. Once they’ve seen it, they’ll know to look for it.

If you really want new people using the store, offer some freebie games and inform them in the box and in What’s New. “Thank you for buying a PS3 Slim. Included with this purchase is a free game (Pixel Junk Monsters, Stardust, whatever) available from the PlayStation Store; a single online service for all your game, movie and music needs.” yada-yada. Get them in and browsing, downloading free stuff, and that’ll be enough. Muych better than the 1950’s style of in-your-face advertising you are currently employing!

  • Well, when it comes to design. You have to look no further than this blog. The design in it is horrible as well. I’ve been saying that for years. Its no surprise that Sony’s xmb will soon hold that consistency as well.

  • And sorry, but I really need to get this off my chest when reading some complaints around here… SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY! The guys at Sony work their ARSES off every day to please their fans and all you give is whining?! Has your mommies never learned you that you can’t satisfy everyone and you should be damn happy about things you’re getting, like not look a given horse into the mouth? Probably not.

No one noticed the XMB is a lot faster now? No of course not, since you’re too busy “whining”.

    @angelcoma, amen!

  • Great update, but I’d like the option to reduce the font size to what it was before and remove the grey backgrounds on the friends list and remove the ticker on the notification area. Other than that great update! also my PS3 seems to be louder now for some reason.

  • *I don’t know why Sony has done

  • oh yeah, i too want the PS3 logo back when i start up a game,

the only feature i like is dynamic themes but other than that 3.00 is very ugly too look at now.

  • “Redesigned Friends List”

That is not a redesign Sony, that is an abomination. A redesign improves things, gives a fresh new look. Someone has put a grey box behind each friend completely ruining the seamless look of the XMB.

Seriously Sony… the design decisions are so poor. “We’ve moved the battery icon!”. Great. You’ve decreased the X value for onscreen placement a bit. A two minute job that should have been fixed long ago. Shame someone didn’t think to make it look like the rest of the new combibox… Nope, just kept with the same old crappy icon so the two jar when on screen together.

I’ve never posted on this blog before and I like your products, so I feel it’s a shame when you actually downgrade them and 3.0 feels very much like a downgrade to me. I would genuinely like to rollback to yesterday and have less ads, a sleeker friends list and the console that I’ve paid for to start on the icon for the game that I’ve paid for.

Incidentally, that game was Batman. I chose to buy it for PS3 although I own a 360 as I preferred the XMB over NXE. Until the Friends List is less of a visual assault, future multiformat titles will be purchased on the 360. I’m that petty!

For next update: How about adding an option to choose more resolutions than the basic 576p, 720p, 1080p.. I have 1366Ɨ768 and I would love to play with my native resolution. Now all my games and blurays look crappy. :( Thatā€™s why I like my xbox more.

dude. that means ur tvs native resolution is 720p. and you can mess with the settings. go to display settings. theres 480p 720p 1080i and 1080p. if ur tv says 1366 x 768 its only 720. if its 1920 x 1080 then its obviously 1080. thats why ur tv looks like crap. cuz its not 1080 its 720. its not the ps3 bud its what ur workin with.

  • @1085: They removed the boot up screen on games to speed up the launching of them a bit. The PS3 doesn’t have to load and play the boot sequence for games therefore shaving a couple of seconds off loading times :)

And whats peoples problem with the new boot up sequence and sound. I don’t understand whats wrong with it :S? It sounds more or less the same and the new start up video is better if you ask me. Loving the new PS3 logo, although I must admit, the original spiderman font always attracted me more XD

  • Oh one more quick thing, if you could have the option to turn back on displaying the PS3 logo and the jingle when you start a game that would be cool especially if you could do it with the new logo instead of the old one. In addition, I’ve always wanted black as an option on the XMB color chooser if thats possible. Thanks for the great support for the PS3.

  • Just another request for option to DISABLE that news ticker. It’s driving me nuts!

  • Please change the friends list back.

  • I am very disappointed that Sony have messed up one of the things that they did so much better than their competition.
The award winning and stylish XMB, that was the envy of everyone has been ruined by clutter, spam, tickers, hideously badly designed friends list boxes and childish gigantic fonts and icons.
This is the first “upgrade” that I wish I could get rid of and go back to the adult and slick previous XMB.
I think that Sony need to have an emergency meeting and sort this mess out with a 3.10 update.
PS I cant believe that you also didnt give us one animated theme for free. I am beginning to dislike Sackboy and littlebigplanet for the never ending nickle and diming that they are doing, How much money do they want from us?

  • – Bring back PS3 Logo intro with chime.

    – The friend list isn’t bad, I’ll get used to it.

    – Why is cold sky blue such a big choice for PS3 stuff? The store, the new What’s New menu. Get rid of the ugly blue and make it slick black, white and red like PS3 is.

    – Stop adding things that have had NO demand from customers. More than half of the stuff in this update are completely unexpectad and had no demand, hence the mixed reactions you can see in the comments on this Blog post. This is the outcome of poor decisions and not listening to the community.

    – The box at the top right of the screen showing time, online users and so on, is GOOD. Bad thing is, writing from the XMB mingles with it. Is it so hard to make things not hit off each other? You have a lot of screen to work with.

Lastly, just stop messing around. Listen to the demands of the users, and implement what has been asked for.

  • @SeparateEntity

    1. Yeah would be a nice option but consider it to be difficult to input.

    2. I agree on this one. Since mr Koller specifically said we can kiss PS2 BC goodbye you can better remove that.

    3. Whereā€™s the option to change the font size? I donā€™t mind the big XMB icons and font, but, as Iā€™ve seen in some of the comments, a lot of people donā€™t like this.

Then I’m the only one that DOES like it. I’ve got sensitive eyes and one thing I’ve been annoyed about ever since I bought the PS3 and hooked it up with the HDMI cable on my Bravia TV were the tiny characters on screen. My TV isn’t that big namely, only 26 inch, thinking about to get a bigger one, and the more resolution the little the characters will become and therefore more difficult to read in the XMB. I wish it was also for the messages.

  • Some of you guys LIKE the fact that now those stupid friends list boxes cover up your theme and look totally stupid?

They could at least make them functional by putting trophy levels at the far right-hand side…

  • I hope the developers got some cool functionality. We sure didn’t.

The info bar is much better but the ticker needs to go. What’s up is lame and ridiculously slow. The PS Store icons are redundant and slow. The video store icon is useless in my county, it shouldn’t be there. The grey bars in the friend list serve no purpose but make the names more difficult to read.

It’s all so insignificant at best and just plain dumb at worst.

  • Now everything wrong with the firmware update:
    1) The first thing is when you turn it on, why is it some cheap sounding “orchestra tuning” Why can’t people with the older model consoles keep the old “orchestra tuning” music and “Sony Computer Entertainment” logo that appeared and the people with PS3 slims get the new intro?
    2) Why was the Playstation 3 “chime” when you boot a game removed? Why couldn’t the old console users keep the “Playstation 3” logo while the slims get the “PS3” logo and both have the chimes before the game boots.
    3) The black background. Why was this removed from both the new dynamic and classic theme, please bring back the black background for both
4)Unnecessary playstation store icons. We all would sign in and look at the playstation store in the beginning, why add in 2 more icons that clutter up the XMB? Besides, it’s very unnecessary for those who live somewhere else other than the US and don’t have a video store on their Playstation Store.

  • 5) The annoying ticker. I seriously hope there’s a way to disable this and or change it, it’s distracting and clashes with the actual XMB. The idea of seeing who’s online and what unread messages is good but not have a big block taking up 1/4th of the screen
    6) The grey boxes around the username. I wish you can change this to be transparent or something else

  • plzzz let it come out once I get back from school and not at the end of the day when I’m asleep

  • Like they said many times before me, bring on voice chat.
My friend and I dusted off our xbox and turned it on to use the voice chat while we play battlefield on PS3. Works great! We call xbox “voice box”. LOL.

    Love the update.

  • WHY IS THE CLOCK STILL BROKEN FOR US IN THE NEWFOUNDLAND TIME ZONE? It’s been broken since 2.40! Also there isn’t a way to disable the scrolling news. I don’t need to see that because I already keep up on news, so that is just getting in the way of my background. And speaking of stuff getting in the way, the friends list completely blocks out the background with blocks of gray.

  • – Please improve the look of the Friends’ grey box section. As many others have stated, a transparent look would be welcome.

    – Revert back to the original “orchestra tuning” boot-up theme. It sounded much better.

    – Please have sparkles disabled by default, but leave it as an option.

    – Please have the font reverted back to the previous smaller size, but leave the larger font as an option.

    – Please return the chime sound when a game is booted up.

  • Guys, I don’t mind most of the things you added…

I like the Recently played, and previews in the store. It’s not intrusive because each segment with relative media in the store has a store link. Not a big Deal.

But the Font Size really made me think that I had switched to 480p, and it looks very clunky, and dare I say, Xbox-building blocks, kiddish.

I don’t terribly mind the blocks around the friends, but couldn’t you guys have chosen something a little more stylish?

And I REALLY miss the jingle when I boot up games.

  • xbox sucks xbox sucks who is with me

  • Once again, as some people still don’t know it – IF YOU CAN’T USE XMB DURING MUSIC PLAYBACK, YOU MUST CHANGE THE MUSIC SETTINGS TO 48HZ!

All other complaints are still valid and Sony must fix this abomination of an update!

  • @1110
Keep checking here for 3.0 http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3

  • Only one complaint from me really, I can get used to the font and friends list.

But we need to be able to play our music and still be able to browse the XMB like we could before.

I use the media server function a lot and used to be able to play internet music and videos and still be able to text chat and browse the XMB before, but now it tells me I have to quit playing music after hitting the PS button.

Other than that I like the update even though the font is big, it’s ok. (I sit about 15 feet away from my big screen).

  • Remove the blur/Vagueness of the menu!!!!!!!!!

  • the 3.00 firmware update is not available so don’t look for it

  • The PlayStation community is not only the people responding here, mostly male, but men, women, children, young, older people from all over the world. So PlayStation is not only about “you”, its about “everyone”.

  • + new design ( most of it )
    + the information bar
    + motion background themes

-lack of cross game chat\invite (yet)
    – the gray background around the friends list
    – the bigger fonts are ugly.

  • the update is good but not great every thing is good untill i checked the (whats new) thing the information board was better sony get it back plz

  • @GGCAN, don’t know what you do but I’m listening to music as I type this around here on the PS3… so works perfect.

  • one thing from me is that we need to listen to music and play games at the same time

  • Just a quick opinion, tho i know its been probably voiced already. Just change the scale of the XMB, or better yet, add an option to scale some of the objects yourself (mainly the icons and text, separately). Used to be so elegant and minimalistic in design, and now with that small change to the scale, it feels like theres too much clutter on the screen as a simple item takes up so much space, and everything needs to be tucked together without free space between them to separate.

  • i think the XMD bar could be improved so much to ive it more animation but this is a start.why cant we create are own avatars

  • THANX SONY! I LOVE THE NEW UPDATE! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! LOOK FORWARD TO THE FUTURE UPDATES!
