Upcoming PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

  • Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
  • DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.

As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.

  • Sweet! I purchased my PS3 primary for use as a media centre, so these updates are great (particularly the DivX improvements).

I’m hoping that this release will fix the stuttery playback over Wi-Fi problem (that appears to have been introduced in the 2.50+ firmwares).

Oh, and I’d really like to see MKV support in the next firmware.

  • I really like all PS3 updates, with or without new features that I’ll use at all. Always you guys shout a new update I simple feel like having a brand new system for free!!! and that’s makes me like my PS3 even more. Thanks and keep your awe and valuable work!!

  • Hello,

Do you know if it will be possible to create with this firmware a playlist with mp3 files stored on a DLNA server ?
A big lack on PS3 audio feature.
    Regards,

  • thank you Jeff and staff, the photo-gallery it is really good and divx support too.

But please do not forget that we are “gamers” esentially so there are a lot of features that we are waiting for so long,

please help Slant /6 team that need a firm update to show correctly the name of the rooms on XMB for Socom.

and for online games in general we need:

    -XMB in game invites
    -XMB in game Chat
-CLAN tags support on XMB friends list.
    -XMB friends list organaizer.
-Alow as to voice chat during PSP remote control of PS3……………………..
and a long long wish list, to make PS3 experience PERFECT.

please still supporting PS3 as you are doing,

thank you and regards from Europe

  • The sad thing is that I’m actually more excited about being able to log in to this site with my PSN Network user info than I am about this firmware update. The DivX 3.11 support is more important to me than the Photo Gallery. That said, here’s what I’d still like to see:

    1. MKV support (mkv2vob works pretty much perfectly, but I’d rather be able to play the MKV file directly).

    2. FLAC support (I can stream these through TVersity and have it decode to PCM on the fly, but it would sure be nice not to *have* to).

    3. DivX 7 support.

    4. A folder / subfolder structure in the XMB for music / videos / photos. Just think “Windows Explorer”. It would be so nice to organize my music the way I *want* to organize it (by artist and *then* subfolders for albums). This is a BIG one for me.

    5. More visualizations for music.

    6. Ability to change the font color on the XMB so we could use ANY background, not just dark backgrounds.

    Thanks,
    Dan

  • Excelent!

  • hey guys first post.

i having both a Ps3 and Xbox. i can say PS3 is better in more ways than the xbox is better than the ps3.

does anyone know if EA use their own server for their games? because i’m always being booted?

i Would love to see an update involving the music system.. especially in game. ie using music on your HDD.

  • when the next update

  • Oooh… I didn’t realise it was out NOW :D Downloading…

@chelieguy07 – Your request list is spot on. I want to see the same features implemented (with the exception of FLAC support). MVK/DivX 7 support is the main one for me. That would make the PS3 a truly powerful media centre!

  • I love my ps3 in fact i love it more than my 360.But if you guys could please improve on the ability to use the usb and bluetooth headset more freely this just might be the edge the ps3 needs.Yo check this out,how about if you enter a chat with someone just by typing in the user id to chat.HELL i’ll name it 4 u.Call it “PSN PHONE CHAT” useing id’s like phone number’s.A window of communication is now open.

PS: You know this is a good idea give me some credit.

  • It would be nice if Sony would focus on existing HDMI sound issues with the PS3 in their next update

  • thank you Sony for another great Free Application for the PS3, it’s awsome, and i would also like to give you guys an idea for an application to put in the music section of the XMB, i think it would be awsome to have some kind of garageband application for the ps3, something where i can plug my electric guitar in the ps3 and get all kinds of Amp sounds, with record options, maybe add youtube upload also, you can call it eyeRock.
    :)

    again,thank you Sony
    keep up the good work!

  • I am constantly amazed out the commitment you have all shown to furthering the development of the interface and features offered by the PS3. The last two firmware updates have provided us with some much needed and now unexpected changes.

Also, the PSN ID/ Blog ID migration was completely seemless to complete.

Thanks everyone for keeping the masses informed, going the extra mile to make a video release and keep up the good work since it’s your dedication that truly makes this the ultimate console to own.

  • @chelieguy07 – Spot on, but you forgott the most important one… NTFS or EXT2-3 support.

Why on earth can’t I plug in my external 500GB HDD filled with all my photos and videos to my PS3, well because I’m not using the OLD fat32 format, I’m using the slightly newer NTFS.
I could survive with it being EXT3 support since that is a linux format and totally free, I’m not sure about NTFS but you probably need to talkt o Microsoft about it.

  • This is ok for now but I can’t wait what else they have in store for us.

  • good update i had fun with the photo gallery ive never wanted to store pictures on my playstation 3 but this new way of storing pictures turned my around,

    nice one sony,

may be we will see more stuff soon ?

  • What I love is how you posted that there was a firmware coming soon and then the update was online a few hours later.I believe this simple promptness is an indication of future things to come. The PS3 is my favorite system of all tme but I know that Sony’s gotten behind in the past when it comes to some services or updates. This update really shows how far Sony has come and further proves that this truly is the year of the PS3!!!

  • Features like this have been trickeling in since The Launch and I say Kudos to Sony. This is a great way to freshen up an original feature of the PS3 and it is nice to get these. Plus…it is free. Great Job Sony. Keep it coming.

  • I see that you can categorize by Smiles and Other but can you set Smiles, Laughs, Cries, Silly Faces or is it just Smiles and Other?

  • sweet update.keep them coming.thanks!

  • how do you even download the new firmware if playstation dosn’t have it on there website to download to usb then put on ps3

  • I love the new Photo Gallery application. Thank you for continuing to add more value to my PlayStation.

Now how about a digital media server that runs natively on the PS3 and that will let me watch Hulu, Netflix, CBS, CNN, Youtube and ESPN on my TV. It’s the obvious next step in media-center evolution for the PS3.

  • Great finally i can post here, gretings from cancun.

  • I was personally hoping for a price drop. But nice update.

  • very nice update. May I suggest the same type of program for the music?? Some sort of Music gallery that will automatically pull song, title and album information would be sweet!

  • I think the update is great.

But would love to see more visualisations when playing music, surely cant be that dificult. That globe doesn;t do it for me no more :P

More, the merrier i say :)

  • Hey Jeff!!! My first time commenting…I hope i get a red box reply! I looove the new update to the photo gallery. My Mom and 5 month old daughter loves it! (she’s mesmerized by all the colors). I wanted to toss 2 possible ideas for the next update.

    1. How about a individual lock to each user setup in the system by maybe color coded or pattern coded [i tend to forget numbers] (kinda like the iPhone, and each user can choose to apply the lock to their account or not to) *I tend to get my ratty brothers ruining my progress on certain games. Would be nice to keep them off my account. If the passcode is ever lost or forgotten…you’ll have to retrieve from PSN account online (or do a hard reset from PS3).

    2. A fresher broswer support or flash provided for the browser. Or whatever is not allowing me to go to page #2 in ‘My Photos’ on Myspace. =)

Please keep up the good work! It is greatly appreciated!!!

    Mike A.

  • The new Photo Gallery is preety nice, though I would like to be able to put some music while doing the slideshow from the XMB.

    Nice work tough :D

  • I love this update but the one thing that would make this console just as good as the Xbox 360 as far as couch co-op is having an option through the PS3 to have 2-4 users who have controllers to sign into their own PSN id. Please, please work on this feature.

  • great update! I am deployed overseas and get plenty of photos from back home. Now I have a great way to see them all on my ps3!! Thanks!!

  • all good with the link process for me cheers guys about time too

  • cool update

  • thats a nice update on photos but can we share or let my psn view it? i tried sending photos thats never been edited from a 10.1mp digicam. . .but i wasnt able to send it since its too big.

yes the clock and battery issue, please fix that one.
the friends list too. . .rearrange and put them in order like categories.

thanks for keeping PS3 more fun to use!

  • The new photo gallery is nice, now just give me support for photos over the Network via it :)

  • Updates are always welcome but seriously there are major functions that are still missing from the PS3 system, many of these you know off.

Private XMB cross game chat being the most urgent I think. It is beyond a joke now!

    XMB game invites..etc.

Why is it still not possible to display all the track info/ album art from an AAC file encoded using iTunes? Before you say it is a Mac/iTunes issue the PSP does this without any problem and has done for years!

What is so irritating about the whole Playstation group is that they keep claiming to be better and I think they could be but they just keep missing the mark on really stupid things that the machine should have done from launch and giving us things no one has asked for!

Try concentrating on giving PS3 users what they have asked for, then you can play about with additional features!

  • oh one more thing. . .can we put our own pictures instead of avatars?
if thats possible, please and thanks. . .

  • My brand new ps3 will not seem to download the update it get started then says some error happened. can I download it from online somewhere to my laptop then I could put it on my ps3 with a blank dvd or cd?

  • Love the photo app but it would be so much more useful if it supported media servers. I simply do not store much media locally on my PS3. I have all of media on my home network (that I backup weekly) that I stream to my PS3. I also just purchased a 2nd PS3 that’s on it’s way for the bedroom which will make storing stuff on one PS3 redundant and wasteful.

In fact all of the XMB media features should include support for media servers, not just local content.

  • can you please make a firm weare that lets you broadcast your web cam in web sites like justin tv you tube ect.ect.ect. your web cam is 120 frames per sec.. wich is why faster and looks way clearer than any web cam i have seen today..thanks for those of you who dont have one get one its awsome and fun especialy if you have family or friends far away super clear and fast

  • That looks sweet, not sure I’ll be using it that much since I don’t have many photos on my PS3, but I’m sure I’ll mess around with it a bit. I REEEAAAALLLLYYYY hope you guys can come up with *.srt subtitle support for the divx files. Keep up the good work =0).

  • Dude i already have the update im runnin 3.60 right now i just updated through internet

  • this broke my system and sony wont fix it for free. why should i be held accountable??

  • Now that the SECOND photo-browser application is complete, I hope Sony immediately starts working on the THIRD.

I’d hate to think Sony was wasting time on stuff that people actually wanted.

  • How stupid….A really HUGE firmware download with some really mundane features.
This PSN link situation is stupid as all hell.. took me 20 minutes…no joke.. I had to dig up my psn password..finally got that and then it asks for my blog password..had to reset since I dont know it by heart…sent me 3 damn e-mails (LAME!) and kept saying my password was wrong and then another 10 mins passed before I figured out that my user name is CASE SENSITIVE!! wtf is that anyway? gotta remember where I put uppercase letters and stuff!? lol does that mean that there could be a guy running around the blog with the name midnightBLUES and since his uppercase letters are different its a different user name?? LOL otherwise I dont see the point…

The e-mail to reset your password cracks me up.. “Someone has asked to reset the password for the following site and username” ….SOMEONE?! go to hell! its me and I been trying for 15 damn minutes….as if there is some guy out there trying to reset my password and sending them to my e-mail…YEAH NICE ONE SONY! I am glad you protect me feelings by letting me know there is a possibility it could be “someone” instead of me!! DAMNIT ME!! lol

  • Can you add to a firmware update the ability to listen to your own music while surfing the web or playing a game. Some what like the Xbox 360 media player that can be played where ever you are on the system.

  • Since I already used my PSN name for my blog name, it worked out great!

  • Please add the ability to output audio on HDMI and optical simultaneously.

  • By the way…

Please give us a firmware update that will allow bc for PS2 games! You would have so much more of my money this way, since I missed out on the PS2 era!!

  • I deleted all my CC info on my system so I can post here. I would really comment on this 2.6 update but I would like my system to stay in working condition. Keep up the great job you very talented group of people. I love it, love it, love it.
