Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.
The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.
The 2.60 update also includes:
- Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
- DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.
Here’s a video walk-through of firmware 2.60 that shows off some of what the Photo Gallery can do.
As always, we look forward to hearing your feedback.
I love how you guys are always adding cool applications to really use the PS3 as full home media server! I can’t wait until you get the IPTV going or PVR capabilities in the US like you did with PlayTV in Europe and Australia! Maybe even something like this Picture app for Videos, like determining if they are movies or home videos or what. Sweet job!
nice
@ Eric / Jeff…
Does the photo gallery application integrate with and search any connected DLNA media servers?
On a side note, cross game invitations have been asked for since before firmware v2.4. It is something XBox 360 owners continue to boast about as a missing feature on the PS3.
Provide developers with a simple API call to send a game encoded invitation message to friends – using the standard friends list messaging protocol / system. On receiving and viewing an invitation, the recipient should be able to start the appropriate game, go to an ‘Online / Join Friend’ menu option (in game), then be presented with his friends list & received invitations (messages) to select from. The game should then attempt to connect the gamer to the appropriate server (where the server details, sender name, etc, are stored inside the message). Take another look at Ridge Racer 7 and how that manages friend invitations. Thanks.
Just a minor update to a system that needs some great games. I know most of the popular ones are games that are also on other systems…sony should make more great exclusive games that sell well…much like Metal Gear Solid 4, which showcased the true power of the system and became the poster child for the PS3 in America and Japan. Since then, there hasn’t been a hot game made only for ps3 and played by ps3 users…maybe killzone 2 could help.
Hi 2 every1,i’m new. I am one who got the rare light thing in his ps3. I’m going to buy another before Feb27 just to play KZ2.Hope 2 see you all in Kz online
very cool thx for the update
Every new feature is a good Thing!
Keep em coming :)
Looks really awesome
Have you considered doing something similar with for the music part of the XMB? some sort of organizing tool would be neat.
Yay Firmware!
Hey eric… Just another reminder- Where’s the list of the “top 10 most requested features” you promised us about… 18 months ago?
From:

Eric Lempel:
On that note, we’re always evaluating ways to enhance your PS3 experience, so now’s your opportunity to have your voice heard! Submit your number one most wanted addition to the PS3’s feature set here. We’ll post a list of the top 10 suggestions next week.
That photo app looks really professional! I really appreciate this since I have over 1000 photo’s on my PS3 and a few albums have been “acting up”
Miami spring break photos ftw!!!
My old PS.Blog name is coming up and not my PSN name? I did the change over? I don’t get it?
I doubt I will garner any response here but Sony, at least, please listen.
I appreciate your hard work and your continued efforts to improve the Playstation experience. But why are you adding features that nobody has asked for, while neglecting those for which we’ve begged?
I think we have seen some great responses in situations where you have listened, for example with the implementation of in-game XMB, and Trophies — so why stop there? Everybody is clamoring for cross-game chat and game invites, these are critical features that matter to the experience of Gamers — who, at the end of the day, are your primary customers. With all due respect regarding these efforts, how many people do you think primarily bought a ps3 to store and manage photos?
Please, either start working on the features your customers really want, or simply tell us why it can’t be done. You need to keep your existing customers happy to ensure a steady revenue stream through the PSN, Qore subscriptions, game purchases, etc. so I believe this would really be a win-win for everyone! Is it not just that simple?
Hello all in sonys’ world,
Good job on the new update. Here are a few minor requests for future updatess…
1. Multiple psn id access on the same console. My gf & I love to play games together but she gets pissed about not being able to collect any of the rewards(ie trophies to her sn).
2. Game sharing- please incorprate a security feature that allows the sharing parties to enable/disable other downloads exept for the ones they are sharing.
3. Cross game chat- I know you all keep hearing about this, but its a top 5 feature we as gamers would like to have!
4. Friends list- just a better way to justify my long list of friends. Just having a 100 frends in list form gets old to search through, plus it looks super cluttered(along with this can we have more avatar choices, or even add our HOME avatars).
5. Remote play- more togetherness. We’re a ps family, then why everything I try to play through remote play cannot be done. I wana play home, network games etc.
Well thank you for having me I look forward to seeing these future firmware features
Nice update
Nice, thank for the improvements.
Cool.Planning on on speeding up the XMB?It’s kind of slow.
Wow, this is a great update for picture fanatics. lol
Keep adding support to the media formats! =D
when is the uk get the video store we dont seem to be getting many updates over here so thanks SCEA for some news at least you tell peeps whats going on
Excellent news on the Divx support. Thanks PSN!
Can’t wait to try out the Photo Gallery because I have tons of pictures on my PS3
@460 RealBigGuns
Sony seems to be afraid to even tell us what features the most consumers are requesting. Eric Lempel promised here on this very blog 18 months ago that he’d supply us a list of the top 10 most requested features, but like most Sony promises it didn’t happen and was never spoken of again.
Is it possible to implement the RSS channel into the Ps3 ? just wondering.
@459
Speak for yourself, I personally don’t care for cross-chat or voice messages..
Be greatful that Sony are doing these updates because they don’t have to.
Cool …you cant go wrong free firmware updates :)
TO EVERYONE COMMENTING THAT THEIR USERNAME IS STILL THEIR OLD PSBLOG NAME AND NOT THEIR PSN NAME:
Jeff addressed this in an older post saying that it is a glitch….They are working on getting it fixed, be patient! :)
Great future but we want private chat rooms cross games.
Great Job with the PSN ID
This update is pretty cool, but can we have some more updates on In-game music, and more visualizations.
Everything else is great!
Congrats to the 44th president
nice indeed! now just give me some more options for notifications (i hate to see an alert when pals come online and go offline but would love to get a notification when i get a new message or friend request!).
also, add the ability to group my pals into groups or categories would be another bonus for us w/over 50 PSN friends.
good job on always adding features! sure beats that other consoles one update a year :P
strange my avatar didnt show up :/
Cross-game chat is definitely the upgrade I would like as well.
#470: “Be greatful that Sony are doing these updates because they don’t have to.”
Sure they do. I mean no disrespect to Sony, and I appreciate the time they put into this. But to say they don’t have to do this is ridiculous. The PS3 is in direct competition with the 360. And X-Box Live already has all of the features that aren’t even on the drawing board of PSN yet. Given the size of internet gaming in todays world, and the fact that it is INTERNET GAMING that is driving the video game industry, and not solo-mode. XBL is a big selling point for the 360 and the X-Box family.
If Sony weren’t updating PSN, the firmware, and whatever else they can update, there would be less people coming in to buy the system. And the last thing Sony needs is to lose more money.
Again I mean no disrespect, but that’s just the truth of the matter. These updates are a necessity.
Love to see some cross-game chat, thanks again, Sony!
Can’t wait!
Hey, are the accounts updated yet?
nice update. it adds to my reasons to show off my ps3. i love how much ps3 has grown since launch. i’m so glad i was able to pick up a 60gb system. Does the photo gallery use all the photos on your system or can you keep some out?
Cool features but imo not enough
They should have at least work on the network connection PC/PS3 issues instead of unimportant photo add on…seriously why why ?
Looks like a nice update for some cool features. Keep them coming.
Great job! Can’t wait to play around with it. let us know when you can announce a release date!
Wow!! Sony is doing great!! im Glad that i had made the best choice for gaming experience since i bougth the PSone in 1999 then PS2 In 2003 And in 2007 THE Playstation3. Keep it Coming Sony.
Is the new DiVX update going to be able to play AVI formats? Because I want to watch animes in that format but the PS3 doesn’t support that format, so i was just wondering.
Oooh, interesting, thanks for the cool stuff Eric!
Cool addition, but I agree with the person who suggested a way to group friends. It would be much more convienent than to just have one long list.
Awesome work guys. Thanks for the update and the video, Eric matey.
Gotta say that the photo album thing looks mightily slick. Although i have a fairly large amount of photos on my PS3 though, i’m not sure i would actually use the Pohot Album.
Thought it’s great that we have divx 3.11 support.
But, what? Some people have their PS3 connected to the internet, but don’t have a PSN account? How very dare they.
Thanks guys, you rawk \m/
@470 mushroomwig:
Yes they do if they want to be competitive.
I don’t feel grateful for these features, but it makes me happy. Sony has to keep on adding features to keep the system competitive with the 360. They are still missing software features that the 360 has, which is what most people are still requesting… parity so to speak.
Eric, make the profiles load faster and the XMB as well if possible. Also trophy syncing should be gone if possible.
Think this is my first comment, hi :D
I did a search for ‘DIVX 7’ in all the replies to make sure im not the only one wanting DIVX 7, and wow theres a lot of people with me on this :)
If your only at DIVX 3.11, does this mean DIVX 7.00 might take a long long time if it even ever gets here??
Will this work with photos available via a media server?
Wow! my first post on the PSBlog ;P
and its with my PSN ID!
and yeah! my father is gonna love this! hes very into photography but lacks a really good way of showing photos off (hes been desperate enough to use the Wii once).
But I really more want a way to organize friends and maybe in the process making Clans out site of games, huh?
This is a good start. Still many things that need to be done with the XMB.
P.s. Are we ever going to get divx support on our PSP’s?
has anyone at sony even taken a look at my customization idea in the forums?
Nice feature!!!
