Burnout Bikes Gameplay Unveiled

Hey. Great to be back on the blog! We’re starting to feel like part of the furniture round here!

If you like what we’ve got to say, head over to our website – www.criteriongames.com or check out our video podcast – Crash TV.

This week, we started to ramp up towards the release of our great FREE Bikes Pack. This one’s pretty much complete now and in the final phase of testing. Here at the studio, most of the Burnout team have moved on to the next pack, which is trophies. But more on that soon, because today we want to spill a few details about bike gameplay.

The Bike Pack adds another 9-10 hours of gameplay to our already MASSIVE game, but it’s important that we give you new things to do…not more of the same.

We’ve built another 70 Challenges. If you’re not familiar with Burnout, Freeburn Challenges are basically “online for the rest of us”. No intense competition, no getting schooled, no racing, no headshots! Just kick back, relax and tool around in Paradise City with your friends playing simple challenges that take you on a tour of the city’s most fun locations.

Half of the 70 new challenges are regular Freeburn Challenges – just hang out with friends and collaborate to get these done in your own time. The other half are timed, multipart challenges that inject a little excitement and allow you to replay to improve your best times. They include popping wheelies and staying on the back wheel to make the most of the fact you’re on bikes for the first time.

With bikes, you also get a fresh new map of the city, filled with the bike equivalent of Burning Routes (against-the-clock races). These are called Burnout Rides and bring a new dimension through 2-part checkpoint races. They’ll reward players that have spent a little time getting to know the city. There are 38 in total, and the traffic system’s been rebalanced to introduce you gently to an all new kind of Burnout racing.

And if that’s not enough, you can whip through the city breaking new bike-specific fast times set for all 64 streets.

The Bikes Pack is a massive deal for us at Criterion. Here’s why.

Firstly, we’ve never done bikes before in a Burnout game before. The way our cars handle has always taken a lot of work and getting the cars to feel just right has taken a lot of time and energy over the years. Bikes are all new, but we wanted to get them right first time. We’re pretty happy with the way they feel, and we hope you guys will be too. You can wheelie around the city and stop to pull doughnuts or combine the two!

Secondly, every new pack we build for Burnout Paradise is grander than the last. We want to change Burnout this year. Big time. And we want to do it through downloadable packs. We want you to know that if you buy Burnout Paradise, you buy much more than the disk we shipped back in January, and the Bikes Pack is the biggest indication yet of how far we’re willing to push the game.

We’ll be back next week to talk about how we’re mixing things up a little in the Bikes Pack with the introduction of Day and Night gameplay!

  • DLC on this level (and cost) is truly unprecedented. Thank you Criterion for not only making the best damn racing game ever, but also supporting it with new content like nobody else!

    Burnout team rocks!

  • the judges give you a 10/10 for this update.

  • Unbelievably awesome.

  • …wow. Other devs should take notice. I’m hoping this doesn’t affect Criterion financially, but I guess these guys know what they are doing.

  • You guys are amazing. I can’t wait.

  • I rented this game before but there was no bikes this will make that game a must buy, Spicily since it is free i can already see myself doing 360s on the bikes and like back flips and front flips and what not, any way this game just got better!

  • Arghh!!!!!! I’m trying to wait until this game comes to PSN to buy it, but you guys/gals are making that extremely DIFFICULT!!

  • Dude.

You guys rock. Who else is gives so many free downloadable awesomeness? No one, that’s who.

I’m definitely picking this game up asap!

  • Excellent job. Can’t wait to get the PSN version you guys are prepping.

  • Why are you insulting female gamers? I mean, and I quote: “Just head to the Junkyard, pick and bike and switch paint-jobs to select different riders. The girls get to choose bikes with a softer range of colours, and of course a cuddly bunny rabbit…”

Girls, female gamers, want bunnies and softer color ranges? Um, what planet do you dev’s live on?

I know it’s an option but it’s an insult to say something like that. I just hope all of the bikes when with a female rider don’t have colors that suck.

  • I hope your taking the time with the trophy patch to build in custom images for every trophy!

Any way you can do a GIF image or small video clip in the place of the trophy images?

  • Can’t wait for bikes, and the trophy pack!

  • Can’t wait for this update. Thanks again for all the great stuff you continue to offer your customers!

Quick question though: I know you’ve said that you can’t race bikes and cars at the same time, or at least you won’t be able to right off the bat. How will that work in online? Will we not be able to choose bikes unless everyone else goes into a Junkyard and chooses them, or does the host change the room settings to Bikes, or what? Just itching for more info on how bikes will work! :D

  • hey, 1st comment here ;)

I was wondering if we will be able do keep using the same Save Data from the disc version with the PSN version of Burnout Paradise…. (?)

anyways, love the game, love PSB, keep up the great work! ;) can’t wait for the trophy pack xD

    greetings from Brazil :D

  • Looking forward to the Bikes, can’t wait for the trophies.

  • I said it once and I keep it, I’m soooooooooo sold on this game because of your constant support :)

  • glad i traded in gta4 for a new $30 copy of burnout… lol. haven’t regretted it yet.

  • Nice, can’t wait for them to add trophies

  • Can’t wait for trophies or bikes! Keep up the great work.

  • Ah, so this isn’t the trophy update either. No problem, I’m still amazed by the attention Criterion gives to this game and the community and I can wait a while longer. I’ll probably wait until the whole game is available on the PSN to pick it up anyway.

  • Amazing Criterion! I cant wait to pick this game up once trophies are added! Once I see yall have added trophies, yall’ve sold me!

  • I can’t believe someone was stupid enough to ask if the trophies are going to be in this update…

In the beginning they said “Most of the team has moved on to the next update which will be trophies…”

WTF. Seriously… are people too stupid to go and press the ctrl + F button and type the word trophies?

He didn’t even have to read 2 paragraphs to get his information. Man I hate people.

  • burnout has always been one of my favorite games and you guys constantly raise the replay value… keep up the good work.. more developers could take a page out you guys book

  • Criterion, I love you guys. Went back and played some Burnout 2 the other day, it’s crazy how much the series has changed since the first game.

  • Next pack should be “Cruisers” with new cruiser missions.

  • When do trophies come out?

  • You guys are the best, wow, perfect.

  • Dammit! Dammit, dammit, dammit.

Look what you made me do, Criterian! I couldn’t wait!

Yup, I went out and bought my BRAND NEW copy of Burnout. Loving it!!

  • I’ll get this as soon as it arrives in the PSN store.

  • OMG! i still can’t believe those updates are all FREE! thanks Criterion! , waiting for the trophies :)

  • Let me install Burnout on my PS3 plz… I already have the b-ray, just would like to have it installed on my HD… sometimes my burnout freezes =/

  • make like another destroyable to get carbon bikes

  • Dear Criterion,

Most console developers have been milking their franchises for the past few years looking to make easy money. I recognize the high cost of development nowadays and the high risk there is when making a new IP. Still I despise the high costs of games today and the additional costs associated with “extra” downloadable content. Notice the quotations in extra since much of this “extra” content was included for free before the age of always connected consoles.

I must let you know that after reading this post I went to amazon and bought your game even though my budget is suuuupeeer tight. I did this because if I complain about how other developers milk their franchises and milk our wallets I must support those who act differently. Due to your continued support via FREE patches and strong commitment to the community you have gained my admiration and of many other gamers. If we as gamer don’t support what you’re doing we´ll be sending you a message saying that we don’t care to be treated good and maybe next time your publishing partner won’t let you treat the community as you would like. Consequently I’ll show you my support by buying your game in hope of letting you know that gamers will reward you for this kind of treatment.

kind regards and keep up the good work,

  • Like I said before you guys are the best. You need to really show these other developers the right way to keep customers happy and keeping your sales up even after the game has been out for alittle over 6 months. This has got to be THE BEST PS3 GAME out there right now .. It has the highest replay value in any game that I can think of. I have alittle over 400 games combind PS3,PS2,and PSP so as you can see I am a hardcore gamer that never trades in games.

You guys just keep up the great work.
Thanks for ALL the FREE updates that you are giving your customers. We really do appreciate it greatly….

Keep up the great work. One of the most fun games i play.

  • i might just have to pick this game up!

    thanks for the post

  • Criterion for world President

  • Sorry to put this here, but I am upset. I emailed info@incognitostudio.com on 8/19 about problems with my stats and never received a reply or had it fixed. I have 16 Warhawk Badges, but don’t have my Warhawk Munitions badge, even though I had 40 kills IAR since. Also, my rank is incorrect for my points and I should have Aerial Achievement Medal, since I earned Warhawk Machineguns badge on 8/5 and they have the same requirements. I bought my PS3 just for this game. I love it, I just wish the company had a phone number or replied to emails. Sorry about my frustration, but thanks for your time.

  • ^^Has nothing. To do. With Burnout.

I understand your frustration, but there’s a time and a place for that. This is neither.

  • 5/5 Great support
