Burnout Paradise – coming to PSN

Massive news this week, here on the Burnout team!

Today we’re proud to announce another PlayStation exclusive for Burnout Paradise. This fall, we’ll be making the entire game available for download via the US PLAYSTATION Store. You’ll finally be able to join us in Paradise City without leaving the comfort of your home, and you won’t have to get up to put the disk in!

A big thanks to the folks at Sony for making the future of video games a reality now. We’ll announce a release date soon, but in the meantime, it’ll look something like this:

Mock-up of US Playstation Store with Burnout Paradise on it

The download will be $29.99, but it’s not the disk version of the game we originally released back in January. This is an all-singing, all-dancing version complete with all the free packs so far. Here are some of the highlights. All new game modes, like Online Marked Man and Online Road Rage. Awesome new vehicles, including the Hunter Olympus and Nakamura Rai-jin Turbo. 70 all-new challenges featuring against-the-clock gameplay and leaderboards plus the in-game calendar and news page. Check the details on our website.

And this is just the start. We’re all about supporting Burnout players through online this year.

We want to change the way you think about DLC. We’re bringing you much more than just a couple of cars or a new track – this is the complete transformation of Burnout. That means you’ll see new game modes, new vehicles including motorcycles, day / night gameplay, weather, a huge new island play area, stacks of new challenges and maybe even aircraft!

The next pack from us will be the free Bikes Pack that we outlined in our last post. We promised a little more detail on what to expect. So here it is.

The two bikes available from Day 1 will be the FV1100 street bike and the Nakamura Firehawk V4 racing bike. With bikes, we’re introducing characters for the first time in a Burnout game. Both bikes feature designs for male and female riders. Just make your choice in the Junkyard.

Motorcycles 1

The Nakamura FV1100 is a no nonsense street bike. The sweet 1100CC engine delivers high performance with easy handling making it the most versatile bike in Paradise. The exposed engine doesn’t leave much room for stylish paintwork, but when the engine looks this good, who needs bodywork?

The Nakamura Firehawk V4 is thoroughbred racing bike. It arrives on the streets of Paradise straight from the race track! The Kanji characters on the guys’ version mean “fire”, but we also have a version for our female rider, featuring an all-new Burnout cartoon character.

We’ve got more on bikes from their Japanese creator – Yuta Nakamura – in our next video podcast, and of course our website – www.criteriongames.com

Burnout Paradise. Always changing.

    Thanks:Brian

  • how big is it gonna be???? im running out of space on my HDD, but at that price i wanna buy it… what am i gonna do…

  • While I’m not much of a “Car Gamer” I must say this is tempting. I enjoyed the demo a lot, and LOVE the ability of having games on my HDD!

Big props to the Burnout Team!

  • Jesus christ you guys are supporting the hell out of this game!

I bought the Disc copy though :( but i’d gladly rebuy just so i can have it on my HDD.

  • I’ll be picking this up soon. Nice to see the PSN allowing console owners to download full games and store them on the HDD. Even nicer to see developers embracing this option! :)
(+) We don’t have to get up and change a disk
(-) We fail to burn those calories when walking up to the console and swapping a disc.

    Laziness/convenience FTW!

  • I think the idea is cool. I don’t like racing games but is a game like Black were to come in this form I would buy it fosho

  • I love PSN and I want this game. Sony if you are listening, You are the best company period in my mind, never ever ever stop. I am buying a bravia xbr to play the ps3 on.

    That is all.

  • I have been considering purchasing this game but the way you guys are marketing this and supporting it has sold me 100%. you are definately on the right track…no pun intended.

  • How large will the downloadable version of burnout be? like in gigabytes

  • Thank you Criterion! You have supported us alot and im glad to have bought Burnout Paradise on day 1. All of your games i’ve played have been a-hell-of-alot-fun and i cant wait until your next game, may that been 2009 or 2010, ill be buying it on day 1.

  • Please put this out in Europe as well, i promise i will buy it again!

  • I agree with the previous poster who said that downloadable versions should always be cheaper than disc versions. You are saving on manufacturing costs, shipping, printing the manual etc. Those savings should reach the gamer.

There is also the DRM-aspect. If I buy the game on disc, it will be playable in 10 years. But if Sony ever turns off the PSN servers (which they will, the PS3 isn’t gonna last forever), then the downloadable version will stop working since it requires you to be signed in to PSN (whose servers Sony just turned off). The DRM lowers the value of the downloadable version significantly compared to the disc version, and it should be reflected in the price.

I already have Burnout on disc so I’m not downloading this. But I would love to download games to the harddrive instead of buying a disc, so I think this is a great idea. Right now I’m holding off though, because of the DRM.
Had the DRM not required me to sign in to PSN, I would have no issue with it. The wii doesn’t require you to be online to play virtual console for example.

  • man i love burnout!

  • Another win for Criterion. I bought the game on disc already but not till I saw how awesome the ongoing support was.

And this shows just how great PSN can be.

I’d also support being able to install or download once buying the disc version. Maybe include a one time download/install key in the disc package.

  • Strange things happening around here, Firefox doesn’t let me log in here. I’m logging in via I.E.

Anyway, so if I have the retail game including the updates I don’t need to download it, right? I alway choose retail version over download as my HDD will be full too quickly and I’d rather have a game which I can hold in my hands ;-)

  • @Gusax, erm you don’t need to be online to play downloaded PSN games either, unless they have an online function.

  • Shibbbbyyy!!! This is awesome dude! Two quick questions for you, is it coming to the Canadian store? (may be a dumb question, but would really suck if it didn’t make it here) Also, any idea on the size of the download?

    Thanks.

  • I have the disc version of the game. Will I be able to download an activation file to play without the disc?

    Thanks.

  • awesome news!!! already own it on disc, tho i was just wondering, how many GB’s will it be?

  • SONY AND CRITERION KICKS ASS!!

Sony for allowing unlimited sized PSN downloads and swappable HDD, Criterion for making this a cheap and easy to pick up version of Burnout: Paradise (and all the awesome free updates).

One super happy customer here, big kudos, this is why we support you :)

  • Great idea guys. We need even more games to follow in the same footsteps!

  • Interesting that Sony is already starting to abandon Blu-Ray now that it’s won the format wars.

Tell me Sony guys – what do you think of companies like AT&T and Comcast in America and Bell & Rogers in Canada who are *throttling* internet bandwidth and *deliberately* slowing down downloads?

Why would I want to buy a game as a download purchase when the internet companies will make it take two or three *DAYS* to download it?

  • I am really looking forward to the bike pack and the trophy patch. Thanks for the great support of this game Jeremy.
The PS Store Download is definitely a step in the right direction for disc based games to start crossing over to digital. Is there any plans for in the future enabling digital backup for owners of the Blu-Ray.

  • lol no new Dashboard for playstation 3.

    Stop copy on 360 !!!!

    i like the original dashboard.

  • Why is the vast majority of third party support for the PS3 so horrible while the support from the Burnout Paradise team so first rate? It’s just bizarre comparing even other games released by EA. My brain has a hard time figuring this stuff out. You guys deserve a medal or something…

  • I really love you EA :D You’re still working on FREE Burnout patches and don’t want money for that. 30$? You have a new client :)

  • I hope alot more people buy this gfame. It is awesome guys and totally worth it.

  • @175 I’m on Rogers and I downloaded Bionic Commando yesterday at just shy of 1Mps, that’s very reasonable.

Also, anyone who thinks that the PSN has slow transfer speeds are dead wrong. (Except maybe in regard to firmware updates, where I won’t argue)

  • Sweet! I purchased this game used a few weeks ago for $28. Looks like I saved a few bills.

Jeremy, you forgot to mention that the free Bike Pack also includes a Day/Night cycle! I cant wait to fly down the streets of paradise via moonlight in my FV1100 street bike!

  • Excellent. I think I will pick this up as the demo didn’t sell me enough to import it to Japan. Please Sony, release this on the JP/PAL store too day and date with the US release. Makes good business sense as I think this sort of feature would be a selling point for the PS3 ie. choose either DD or disc like Warhawk, Siren etc.

  • I don’t know why everyone didn’t already buy this via a hard copy…but the bikes…look AWESOME! Not some lame attempt to get more sales, each update looks like its there to cater to the fanbase already there. Thanks for the ongoing support!!! Looking forward to it!

  • Crazy, man. Crazy.

  • I’m glad to see this coming to PSN. This could be the first step into getting more Devs to start doing full size games on the PSN. If this really takes off M$ is going to be pissing their pants since they have that stupid size limit for LIVE!

  • This is pretty exciting. Now I don’t have to take my neighbors copy anymore.

But on the other hand it is a bit of a downer too. Because knowing this game can fit on the playstation network. Tells you its not THAT heavy in gigs. And wasn’t that what the blu-ray disc was all about? When are we going to start using the space?

And again I’m not trying to criticize or anything I’m just stating.

  • Wow, I didn’t think those screenshots were real until I viewed them fullsize on Flickr. Damn.

  • man i should waited for the psn store.. will all those feature be included on the update for the disk? it would suck if i have to rebuy the game to get all this stuff

  • Disappointed to know the trophy pack has not yet been completed by the team. The submission test process for it will take even longer. I think the trophy pack will be out in like 2 months!

How big in gigs is the full game download on PSN gonna be? 20 gigs?? lol

  • i am going to buy this game or die jajajajaja…… arrrrrrr……..

  • I love this cause microsoft is the one who said “oh we didn’t think HD-DVD would win the format war we want digital download” well who’s the first one with a third party game Downloadable, Yep Sony this is deffinitly a win for Sony AND Criterion games cause they are gonna make some BOUKO bucks doing this downloadable at such an amazing price too. I cant wait for the motorcycles maybe they’ll even have harleys

  • If you have 2 PS3’s can you use the PSN version on both, or should you get the disk version?

  • The demo was very fun. I’ve never owned a racing game, but I need to support devs like this who support the player community.

And I hate switching discs (thanks to my 1 year old hitting eject). So looking forward to PSN download. Count me in.

  • @skygod, Why would you let your 1 yr old mess around with your PS3?

Anyway, I really don’t like the entire idea of full scale PSN games. It’s going to be the downfall of disc based versions. But at the same time I have to remember that these kids nowadays also think mp3s are better than having the actual cd.

Pfffffffft! I like the way my games look in the shelf. I like having an actual manual to browse through when I first open a new game. I like being able to know that if my hard drive crashes, I won’t have to download the entire thing over again. Are kids really THAT lazy now? Where it’s getting to be too much to switch discs?

I guess things are worse than I thought.

  • “…and maybe even aircraft!”

Am I the only one that noticed this? That would be insane.

and thank you yet again, Criterion, for showing us a company that really cares about their games and fans. The support you guys have for BP continues to amaze me and everyone else!

  • Just one thing. Don’t know if this was asked already, but does this have in-game music. If it does I’ll get it day one…

  • @Wcmarchese, the first patch already had the in-game music option included. Since the PSN version will have all the patches which will be released by Criterion that means “also” in-game music ;-)

  • holy shmoly. That’s right!!! Now I remember. OK. Well, that settles it. This game is bought. Oh, and Bionic Commando is AWESOME!!! I hope that you can unlock in-game music in it, too. Like Pixel Junk Eden. There are some locked goodies I noticed while snooping around the menus. Lets hope.

  • Thank you Onna76_NL

  • Sweet! This is an incredible innovation. I really never thought we’d see full 8GB Blurays on the store by 3rd parties. Warhawk was 800MB, and GT5P was 2GB, but a FULLY featured Bluray disc? Nice! Congratz Criterion and hopefully other companies follow. I never thought we’d see this in the current gen, but Sony proved me wrong.

  • I know. aaquib2. There are certain limits on downloads on other platforms. Though, someone correct me if I’m wrong, but do you think this is in a sort of zip-file format?

  • I want to thank Criterion for the awesome support in your games, you guys are developers of the year without a doubt.

A question………is it possible for you guys to implement splitscreen gameplay? I really miss the golden ps2 days when you could have party games with friends and crashing against someone next to you is always hilarious.

Thats why only wish for Burnout Paradise and all other games.
