PS3 System Software Update (v2.41)

1,366 0

Hi, everyone. As many of you know, we released PS3 firmware update v2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly.

We want to extend our apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience. Now we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone online and racking up those trophies!

What shoddy workmanship are you talking about? A small percentage had problems it wasn’t wide spread and they contained it when they heard of it (Unlike Microsoft with their firmware update that bricked systems and they just let people play russian roulette by not taking it down and had people wait for an update) and what do you mean inability to fulfill promises what did they actually promise you that they didn’t deliver?

  • I just would like to say thank you Sony for fixing this problem. I also would like to thank the people here on the blog, you have been a great help, you know who you are…

  • @244…..do you know it was Sony?

I don’t think it actually was as there were so many people that got 2.40 and the trophy patch fine, had no problems what so ever.

I have a feeling it may have been user error in many instances.

Plus less than a week after initial release for a fix is amazing.

How many other sites have gone down or broken.

I read somewhere that the WII users just had an update that really messed up their machines.

Also heard XBOX online site was down for a while and those people pay for that priviledge.

I still think Sony has done the right thing.

You don’t know what will happen with the release no matter how much you test it, until you let it go live.

  • Yes, DO NOT turn your PS3 Off via/Switch. Always use Holding the power button for 5secs or through the software (ie…Controller).

I believe there is problems when un-initilization doesn’t happen properly. If in standby however, you can then turn it off via switch.

  • Thanks Eric! That what I love about Sony always taking care of their customers! :)

  • My 2.40 seemed to have worked fine the whole time, still cheers for fixing it so quick! i brought ssd yesterday so i could get some trophys so am eager for there patch too, will gtp5 be getting trophies?

  • Much thanks Sony!

GameSpy: Does Sony have a deadline, loose or rigid, for developers to implement trophies into existing titles?

Lempel: We’re working with developers to hit a deadline. It’s not something that we’re trying to force on them, since it eats into their development schedules. Many of them want to do it. It’s just there’s some additional work on their end; someone has to create art and assets, and we don’t want to interfere with what they’re currently working on. Ultimately, we’ll have trophies for every game, but we didn’t want to force it on them immediately.

Depending on how soon they are going out for GTP5 depends on if they are working on a new game or not.

No someone said there is a 4th tab that allows you to see when the user was last on what game they played ect.. but i and others cant see it.

    K GTA finally working now.

CANT WAIT FOR LITTLE BIG PLANET!!

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I’ve been checking on the Internet to see what the heck they mean, as I can’t find anything either. They show the picture of a person’s profile, but honestly I only count “3” tabs, and not 4. You’re not the only one with question marks above your head thinking “what?!”

  • I love the update but for the next one, can you make it where my brother can load his PSN user with mine (both are on the network)?

  • Onna76_NL

I think it’s the one under the trophies…mine has the date and time stamped under each trophy.

  • Is anyone else having audio issues with the new firmware? My subwoofer won’t enable anymore when I try watching video files. All I get is stereo sound from the left and right speakers, thats all.

I have my PS3 hooked to my receiver by HDMI. My receiver accepts uncompressed LPCM. Before the update everything worked perfectly fine.

  • StalkingSilence

Liking the new “Platinum” trophy design.

  • @259

What do you mean on two PS3s?

If not I don’t think that is possible.

If so, did you make sure that there is no network conflicts in the router does both PS3 have different IP addresses? Have you tried setting up static IPs and open ports to them both?

  • @The 69th floor, hey land genoot :-D (means hey, compatriot)

  • @251 – GGCAN

How do I know it was Sony?

Well, prior to 2.4, not once did my system freeze or crash.

Following the install, I’ve had to deal with such on a daily basis.

If you’re quite fond of burying your head in the sand by palming off the problem as user error, go right ahead. If it was user error, however, how on earth would Sony be able to ‘fix’ that with this new update?

    Think before you type, please.

  • UltimateIdiot911

like the new download/installation process. just wondering, is it possible to bring another page onto a gamercard that display the top 3 frequently played game in a future update?

  • @265…I did think….and you may have had problems, however, I didn’t and many others didn’t.

How do you know it wasn’t your internet connection having a hiccup.

People are so willing to say blame everyone else but me.

So many people had a good 2.40 download, so that’s why I stated what I did.

Nothing in this world I have seen, doesn’t break at some time or other.

    That’s all I’m saying….however, it’s fixed now…so be happy.

  • Love the new support for DTS 96/24 & ES-matrix, as well as correcting the flagging problem on the early New Line dts-HD titles. Is there any chance of supporting Dolby EX and/or Advanced Resolution DVD-Audio?

  • @267 – GGCAN:

    Again, you’re not thinking.

If the issue was due to user error, why would Sony pull the download and offer an fix?

They have no control in terms of my internet connection, however magical you deem them to be.

If you’re unwilling to appreciate that Sony dropped the ball, you’re evidently sporting a nice pair of rose-tinted glasses.

  • That should read:

    …”and offer a fix?”

  • yo, hell no , neither can I register my controller , without plugging it up first , now my themes don’t stay , thanks a bunch SONY , I still love my PS3 though !!!

  • @271

Does your control have enough charge? Maybe you have to charge it’s battery.

What do you mean your themes don’t stay?

  • My last post to you RSGHANA..I don’t want to argue here.

As stated you had a problem…ok…update with 2.41 and check to see it’s still not happening.

All I’m saying is that there were plenty of good downloads and people that didn’t have your problem.

Even some of the people downloading 2.40 from another site were ok.

Some stated they couldn’t play PS2 games after the download of 2.40 and then others yet said they could.

So it was intermittent…Sony did fix it.

I’m not saying you didn’t do everything right, it sounds as if you did…and I’m sorry you had the problems.

I’m just stating many didn’t and when Sony realized some of us were experiencing problems, they took it offline.

They fixed it in less than a week all for free and even with constant whining from the crowd.

I congratulate the people at Sony for what they did do and appreciate all they have done.

If you don’t want to do that, it’s up to you.

Many are very happy with Sony, some are not.

    That’s all I’m saying.

You be your own judge and jury.

I’ve had problems before with things, but Sony has always come through to assist me and I stand by them for that reason.

  • No rose coloured glasses or burying my head in the sand.

    Those are my honest feelings.

  • Guys ,if the browser is unstable (wich is pretty common since every major browser is unstable) is an issue that Access (NetFront developer) must fix.
Anyway ,just for curiosity what it was the reason of the issue?
a obscure game doing stuff in the DONT DO list ?
    Or just a :
    if(bYouHaveBadLuck)
    {
    Crash_and_Brick();
    printf(“That sucks \n”);
    }
    on the boot code? :D

  • Awesome job Sony!!! Like many, I noticed the platinum trophy’s new look. I also notice the fact that fw updates now install automatically after download (and we have the option of turning the system off after install). Very nice Sony! All that is missing now is to move the battery icon to the left of the clock :). and more codac support! Adios!

  • @273 – GGCAN:

Please do not perceive my comments as argument, we’re merely debating and discussing. It’s healthy; for you, for me, for Sony.

Regarding the ‘free’ fix, Sony have to work hard to come in line with consumer expectations. The free online gaming aspect is a USP for the product, but they have to ensure that such is efficient and effective, to therefore, provide competition to those within the market.

You need to understand that Sony do not have the individual consumer at heart with these updates, they are hoping to achieve the migration of users from other systems, and, overall, retain their consumer base.

It all boils down to sales figures and profitability – Sony doesn’t, and, in truth, shouldn’t, worry about Mr. Joe Blogs, instead, they opt to take a wider view when enhancing their offering.

  • Am I the only one that noticed that the battery gauge still overlays the clock on 2.41 when the ps button is tapped on the home XMB screen? How could that have been missed…………..twice?

  • @ SONY

    MOVE THE CLOCK!!
    MOVE THE CLOCK!!
    MOVE THE CLOCK!!
    MOVE THE CLOCK!!
    MOVE THE CLOCK!!

  • Ok, true said it was my last post..

Where I work we have numerous releases for software and many times that software doesn’t work, or work like it was designed.

It’s test initially, but until it goes LIVE, no one knows what will actually happen.

I think that may be the circumstance here.

All I’m saying now….it’s fixed….2.41 is running great as was 2.40 and I’m happy.

I hope everyone gets 2.41 successfully.

I’m sure with future releases we may again see problems, but as long as Sony is willing to fix them for us, I’m ok with that.

Sure Sony profitability comes into all this, but I’ve seen this happen not only at Sony but at many other companies as well.

So Sony isn’t alone when it comes to having problems.

I have Vista, I love Vista…but look how many people absolutely hate the product.

  • Am I the only one in the world who would like my UMDs to mount on the XMB using the PSP as an external drive? I wish my PS3 had a UMD drive built in let alone being unable to play the PSP titles through the PS3. I mean come on hook a cable from your PSP to your TV and sit 6 ft away from it; with a hideous cord dangling? Pah-lease, I want to play my PSP games when I am home with a Dualshock 3. Is that so wrong to let UMDs be played/viewed through your PS3 for crying out loud?

  • @ 280 – GGCAN:

So now you are attaching blame to Sony for the initial release, right?

Starting to see sense, I see.

  • I’m just saying it could have been anyone’s blame.

I don’t know and actually, don’t care….I’m fine and many others are and that’s all I’m concerned about.

Let’s just get on with the show and more good things to come instead of bringing up OLD stuff.

  • SylarEatsBrains

Guys, what day will trophies become mandatory across the board? Like do we have to wait until October 1st for example?

Also I’m disappointed to hear so many developers choosing not to patch older titles. Devil May Cry 4 seemed like an easy one with their accomplishments.

  • Downloaded 2.4, worked fine. No need to apologize. But, yes you can apologize for the lack of Exclusive titles!

  • Good news now my friends will be able to ingame message me when ever, I’ve been torturing them since I was able to update before it was taken down.

  • I had FW 2.40 and it was working fine, and i am just wondering what’s new in 2.41, or is it just 2.40 again. Am downing it as i type…

  • wait…

we have ingame xmb – but 95% of the features wont work at all “ingame”

we have trophies now – but we have no games that support them other than SSHD

thats what I call a pile of PR crap!

  • My contollers are good on the charge, and my themes do’t stay when I enter a game or turn off my system, just back to the waivt [DELETED]

  • @284…don’t know how true this is, but someone yesterday mentioned that it’s in Sony’s contract with the devs for upcoming games to have trophies.

    We’ll see I guess.

  • @ GAZoman

Don’t forget that in game music doesn’t work on any current titles!

  • Eric,

My PS3 was one of the few that did not boot to the XMB after 2.40.

My PS3 is a laucnh 60Gb unit but it’s upgraded to 320Gb so when it happened I just put in my old 60Gb hard drive (after refomat) and it’s been working fine.

Do you know if after 2.41 I can put back my 320Gb and boot to XMB without problems?

This would be awesome since I have a lot of data in the drive and would hate to have to reformat the drive and loose it.

    Thank you.

  • @290…in game music works for Super Stardust….High Velocity Bowling and Pain….it worked actually before the 2.40 download.

In HVB and Pain, hit Select on the controller.

In SSHD go to Options, Audio, set to custom and then pick your HDD music.

  • how could I forget that!

ok then is even A HUGE PILE OF E3 PR CRAP!

  • @ krik 291

Yes you can because the firmware is flashed onto a portion of the ps3 that does not include the hard drive. Just swap the 320 back in and you should be in business.

  • Thank you for looking out for us and fixing the problem.

  • Sweet……i didnt have any problems with mine, but at least I will have some competition with my trophies

  • @ 292

oh your a genious, of course it works with the 3 games or whatever that support the old system, I am talking about the new system. Thanks but no thanks.
