Hi, everyone. As many of you know, we released PS3 firmware update v2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly.
We want to extend our apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience. Now we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone online and racking up those trophies!

I would like to thank you for your continued support on the Playstation Network, and I would also like to see a upcoming Firmware increase the stability of in-game xmb it appeares to have lagging or slow dawn issues.

So I just successfully updated t0 2.41.
When I went to play SSHD it said that 4.0 was available and It started downloading. About half way through the ps3 beeped 3 times and reset.
I kept trying to download the update and it kept resetting half way through.
So I deleted the game and the game data knowing that I can download it again no big deal.
Then I go into my downloads and re-download the game, it takes like 3 seconds to install and it said install complete. After that I downloaded and installed the addon.
Now the game is not in my games list, there is no capsuled game ready to install or anything. There is a new game data file, but no game.
Any thoughts?
I don’t know what’s going on here but it’s pretty sad when you have to wait almost an extra week for an update so that it won’t mess up your ps3 and then when they finally do put it out…it messes up my machine! i’ve had absolutly no problem with any game EVER freezing up on me and tonight after I install 2.41 i can’t play Battlefield online or off for more than a few minutes and then it locks up. Please Sony fix this!
The Metal Gear Solid 4 theme from the Playstation Store doesn’t seem to have an icon for trophies. It just shows a question mark where the trophy icon should go. Other themes seem to have the same problem. Are the old themes going to be updated?

I think v2.40 and v2.41 are beta and Sony forgot to tell us, o well it happens, well for now I’m going to download v2.41 on my pc in case they pull that one off and I decide to install it anyways. As long as I do a back up on a jump drive first, I should be ok right? say v2.41 kills my PS3, can I just format my HDD on my PC and put v2.36 back on if I have that on a jump drive also?

well in the video for ingame XMB the guy uses pixeljunk monsters with encore add on. for that ingame works. i hav the same one but it will not work, it says the game doesnt support it :{

I know SSHD and Pain already had custom soundtracks but you still can’t start playing music once your already in game, from the XMB….
no it doesn’t work for those two games for me
i also have GTA4 and NBA Live but i didn’t try them cuz i doubt that they will work either

yeah i haven’t had too many problems with my ps3 since i had it but i was looking forward to the music thing while still being in game

I originally installed 2.4 with no issues and everything worked perfectly for me. Four things to note:
1- Move the battery icon a bit lower. With the date and time added, the batter meter overlays that icon.
2- Ability to set transparency for message notifications. Now I want a more solid color if I receive a message in-game so I can know who it is. The transparency is set that you can’t read it at times. We may be able to change this option but I just thought of it and am no longer near my ps3 :-)
3- I like the option to turn off the PS3 after the update. Very nice. When updates are released, I typically update and turn off the ps3 and check out the new features the next day.
4- I would like to have a way to know I definitely have messages waiting to be read. Either a number indicator on the home screen, a trigger to display the number of unread messages when hitting the home button, or something else to clearly state you have unread messages.

In-game music only works for games that support it! It is not supported at the OS level. I do not have a list but if I come across games that currently do support custom soundtracks I will post it up.
Also to note, with 2.4 being released to developers I believe it is easier for them to implement custom soundtracks if they so choose. I just hope, like Trophies, Sony makes this a requirement for future PS3 titles.

I have a MGS4 LE PS3 from Konami that I just bought. If 2.40 would have bricked it, I probably would have had a stroke. It’s unacceptable that some consumers PS3’s broke because of a faulty update.
The people responsible should be fired. Period.
To beat the competition you have to be better than them, not the same. Sorry Sony, I don’t trust your firmware updates anymore. I will now wait 2 days before downloading just to make sure it’s safe to use.

I watch a lot of movies and things in x264 mkv therefore this would make my entertainment console Actually my ps3 instead of my computer.
qwertyuiop- OS level would be at the root level of the gaming system meaning it will be across the board in all games. It is not. It’s currently per game. This is the best way I can put it.
I don’t think PJM supports custom soundtrack.
PS3LuNaTiC- If you feel that way then you simply should not touch anything that requires a firmware update. Throw away your Wii, your 360, your PC, don’t update your games, or phone os. Just stop updating anything that uses software.
In software development you can only test for so many situations before things are good and stable in your environment and is good enough to release to production. At that point, your update can be successful or you can run into issues with a small group of people. If 98% of your users upgraded successfully and the other 2% had issues then you did pretty good. They can only account for the systems they have to test. After that some users have different hdd configurations, etc., that could not be accounted for in their testing environment. From what I read, everyone is making the update much more of an issue than what it really is (that’s the internet for you). I am not defending what happened to those few but it has definitely been blown out of proportion such as your reaction.
Everyone is definitely entitled to their opinion, but I must warn you, this is the age of downloadable software, patches, etc., for the end user. Be prepared to experience some mishaps along the way. If you really want to protect yourself, make use of the Backup feature Sony provided in the PS3’s XMB.
My PS3 has run fine until now. 2.4 installed fine. 2.41 installed fine, but now when I play Battlefield: Bad Company demo it stutters a lot. Then after about 15 minutes the game locks up. Network activity light still going on but then after about 2 minutes that stops and the system is still frozen. Can’t do anything but turn off the PS3. Doesn’t do this with any other game including online ones. Please look into this. Was gonna buy Bad Company but not if this is how my online experience will be…

I wanted to report -3- NEW issues with the latest firmware 2.40/2.41.
1.] When returning to the PS3 XMB from a Linux session via the “BOOT-GAME-OS” command the Bluetooth controller (either SIXAXIS or DS3) will not reconnect without completely powering off/on the console.
This powering cycle is the only way to consistently re-establish the Bluetooth handshake.
2.] When downloading certain .mp4 files from the CriterionGames.com site to the PS3 HDD the saved file icon is represented as the MUSIC note even though after the file download is completed the file is actually placed in the VIDEO section of the XMB.

3.] I do not auto sign-in to my primary PS3 account, but when I do sign-in my Avatar/Icon does not initially load up while the others PS3 users icons do.
Hope this information gives you some helpful input to trouble-shoot these issues.

I’m having the exact same problem with the same game except mine is the full game and it does it online and offline. my father-in-law has the same problem with his after 2.40-1 on the gold edition(mine is the regular version)
I had absolutely no problems with 2.40. However, after DLing 2.41 whenever I play Call of Duty 4, its incredibly laggy (more so than before) and its virtually unplayable. Shouldn’t 2.41 have only been needed for those people who had problems with 2.40?

tirminyl, I completely disagree with your logic. There was no reason for Sony to release 2.40 until it was done right.
One problem with today’s society is that we live in a fast food world where things tend to get rushed and are done sloppily. If society accepts flawed products or software, etc. it only gets worse. It already has been.
As far as games go, I bought a console to get away with PC gaming and all it’s conflicts. Too bad developers are releasing buggy games and using DLC to patch their mistakes.
If Sony is going to advertise the PS3 as futureproof with a 10 year lifespan, their own firmware shouldn’t brick their own systems.
If 2% of PS3’s get messed up with every update, that will add up to a lot of broken PS3’s. I hold Sony to higher standards than that. If I wanted junk I could have bought the competition.
I no longer trust PS3 firmware updates and will wait at least a day, probably two before downloading just to see if Sony screwed it up. Isn’t that the wise thing to do?
this new update (v2.41) made my playstation3 stop playing games and dvds. when i put it in or play a demo it just freeze. what can i do?
I don’t know why people can’t go back to previous firmwares. I would think Sony tech support would provide a way to override the protection scheme and let you go back to something that worked. I want my PS2 games to work again! That was my whole point of buying a 60GB model. If I knew it wasn’t gonna work after nealry a year, I woulda just got a 40gb and been done with it.
why now ever since 2.41 my headset will just cut out in GTA??? it used to happen all the time but the headset icon would dissapear letting me know I gotta restart…but now the icon remains but my headset just CUTS THE HECK OUT!?!?!?!
ONLY SINCE 2.40/2.41!!! you guys really messed this up bad now I am having headset problems all the time….and when I go to look at theader board and click friends only to compare stats with my friends the SYSTEM LOCK THE F-UCK up!!!!!!!

Some of you probably think those of us with problems are babies and just complaining about stuff….. but when I invest $532 plus accessories/software, I have the expectation of the system working 100% for several years. And yes, I did choose Sony and purchase their products. I didn’t have to. I just think they should be more careful if they provide updates, because my system was working perfectly before the update. I also think you should be able to sign in and play online w/o being forced to update with their buggy firmware. Anyhow, to those who have problems, I wish you the best of luck, and hopefully get things working to your satisfaction. I totally understand your guys frustrations, and I don’t blame you for being upset about it. I am in your same boat.

A week ago you guys were all posting going “OMG release 2.40 already” “where is 2.40” “you guys suck give me 2.40” and now you are sitting here [DELETED] that they released it TOO EARLY!!! shut up!!! sony was being hounded from every corner to release it from you guys CONSTANTLY [DELETED]…I love 2.40 its just odd that certain game features were messed up…i am sure with time they will fix it.

I was using ver2.4 with no known issue. Happy and satisfied with the previous update, except for when I go to my own profile to look at my trophies, I get a return error. It is only when I pressed on the same icon 2 to 3 times before I can actually excess the trophies section. With the update of ver2.41, I am still encountering this same problem. I wonder if anyone out there is facing the same problem. Could the problem due to that I have no trophies earned and they do not reflect on the trophies section, thus causing such error. Experts please comment on this. Thanks a million.

i hate MS but after reading all the problems and seeing all the ingnerance in sonys ways im starting to think thay had it right from the get go reguardless of a few hundred faulty red rings of death and so help me god if i run across any of these issues sony best kiss my bum and tell me it smells like roses and tell me my farts smell like perfume like staed by a previous poster the $$ invested + software that i have is probly about 2.5K if its zapped so are thay and i will demand a full refund for everything i have of theres even if it means going to court
