As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.
cheers for that 1744 is there anything i can do if i cant find a number or cant get through?
Ok, so I wasn’t happy about the dead end I found, so I did actually redo the entire torrent, and it copied properly this time. I am installing now, standby for an update!
can u do a back update on a ps3 if you know what i mean?
it gives you confidence in the situation that after all the hype over 2.40 that sony can screw everything up, then take a holiday weekend relaxing with a beer or 2 how can they sleep at night? on top of a big pile of money!
ok 1746 tell us if anything goes wrong?
Beefy1990 – I had a problem once with a download and I emailed them…they got back to me on a weekday…so I’m not sure if that’s fast enough for you.
do you have the email for the uk ?
It worked!!!!!! 2.4 has arrived for me!
can u actually get into a game and run the thing with no issues?
Echo, Did the site I send you work?
No, I used the same one that I had been using before, but it worked this time!
Beefy1990…go to the UK PS3 website…should have a place on it that says Email us…
Click that and enter your info.
Echo307….you the man !
Just make sure everything works ok and let these other guys know.
But remember people…it’s not from Sony and you may be taking a big chance…up to you though.
do you have a link for there site? cheers ggcan thats wikid?
To any and all, I will be making up an instruction sheet later on tonight on how to install 2.4 via a torrent site that I am using. I have tested this myself, and verified that it works for my console. If you would like me to send you the instructional sheet, e-mail me at Echo307@Live.com.
*Please note that I am NOT responsible for damaged consoles if the update does not work for you
@1741
It sounds like the good old “disc read error” Which is completely unrelated to the 2.40 issue. Here’s what you can try, if you want. Reformat the HDD, if it fixes your problem…Hooray…your machine is working, if not it’s hardware related, you can try a lens cleaner, but most likely you’ll have to have Sony fix it or replace it.
Beefy1990….take a look on the side of this blog page….
Section called CONTACT US and right below Email Us.
Hmmmmmmmm i think that Eric Lampel and a few other top sony execs need a harsh slap around the face!
sony please put universal music in 2.41
i shall cry like a little girl if you don’t :(

I used the site above and it worked with no problems the first time I did it. They use the same file as the PS site before they took it down. Hope this helps.
Beefy1990…I’ve also got this from when I did email them…may work as well:
webmaster@playstation.sony.com
I have come across a small problem… The site I got it from is a closed torrent site. Meaning you have to have an invite to get in and gain access. I am granted the ability send out invite codes, but I’m not sure how many I’m allowed…
Not bad. Not bad at all. Congrats!! :D
Spaz if that’s an open torrent site, that might be easier than the one I have. You tested it, right?
The site I posted is not a torrent. You are just downloading the file directly. It may be easier for those who dont have torrent progams.
I tested it myself and it worked 100% with no problems at all on my PS3.
@1739
if i also remember the memory it sets aside if used to run the game old game menu and also remember that having 256 mb of memory (not counting the GPU memory) there is only so much that sony can take out for them to use and giving a good bit amount to developers. So they also have another 256 off the HDD as virtual memory.
Now with the 2.4 update, unlike before it had to rearrange how memory and casheing works cause now more memory is needed for the in-game XMB and i believe the OS allocates it when it turns on. If there are bad sectors or corruptions you cant expect the process to go all to well. This also to me explain why not everyone if getting the same performance of the in-game XMB some people are reporting it to be more sluggish over the other person and other thins going bad after the update. As for network settings i dont know if the update hurts it cause my internet sucks.
Great spaz! Even better, because torrent software can be a pain in the ass.
people….you waited until now… why take a chance with it?? when sony will be putting it back up anytime now?
unless you all rich and got money to burn… the best thing to do is wait for the official fixed update from sony…
Yeah, you aint kidding. People love to load fake torrents loaded with viruses. I guess they have nothing else better to do.
I shall eat a handsome portion of cheeseburgers and await the sony staff to return in a drunken stupor, hell the next update will probably be worse. i bet old Ken Kutaragi is turning in his grave, except of course hes not dead, unlike many peoples ps3’s
Actually, there’s no need for an instructional sheet, we can lay it out here. Follow the link on comment 1764, and download it. From there, instert a USB in to your computer, and create a folder named “PS3”. Inside that folder, create a new one called “Update”. Put the update file inside the update folder, and insert it in to the PS3. Go to your update via storage device option and select it. Should be all downhill from there. Please remember that although this worked for a few of us, it is NOT guaranteed, and you still take a chance of damaging your console by installing this update. The “smart” thing to do would be to wait until Sony puts their’s back up, but if you’re as impatient as I am, you know have an alternative!
Echo307…I just checked you on my PS3 friends list and did the compare trophies…It now works so appears you have a good 2.40 download.
Still, if I didn’t already have it, I would be waiting for Sony’s official patch…but others can decide for themself.
Alright, I’m off for a while, if anyone has any questions about how to do this, you can e-mail me at Echo307@Live.com.
*calms self down*
WTF!!! people are just to @#$@ing ignorant, blind, or live in a fantasy world. Universal in-game music is not possible unless everyone who wants it give Sony money to get the right from Microsoft to use it. Even in the video he said it is a modified version of the update to demonstrate how in-game music would look like because the SSDH has its own menu for custom soundtracks not they why he showed it!!!!
Please just forget about in-game music because honestly it is not the end of the world and it also takes away the feel of the game when you have it running. Even bungie has a warning when using it with Halo 3 saying they do not recommend it because you may not get a good experience (I like to paraphrase a lot).
Hey, I noted what the “smart” thing to do is…
@TheVesra
Thx, I’ll try arranging the music as you described.
@1779….Super Stardust HD has in game custom music…but only from your HDD.
but what i seen it is not the same menu you got to use like the dude showed and that is what people are taking it and all game that are not patched have. SSDH has custom soundtrack but i dont got the full game and i doesn’t load from the in-game XMB. What i was saying is that he used a modified version to show how PATCHED games to come would load custom music.
@Echo307,
Man, you’re something else! :)
You don’t give up easily, LOL, awesome–I’m glad it worked out for you! ;)
I am starting to swing more along the line now of thinking you got a little bit more than a touch of madness the more I read from you though….I kid, I kid. LOL
@1783 (cytricks) I had to watch that video again, but yes you’re right.
However, he did say please keep in mind this is only a concept for now….so most likely that will be coming in future updates.
For now only Super Stardust has a custom music, but it was already there from before the 2.40 patch….and it doesn’t work like the concept….it’s from within the game.
Can’t wait to try this out. My friend has it, no problems on his end.
but it’s cool that they took it down to fix it right away, as opposed to having many people possibly having lot of problems.
1784:
Hey, I just don’t like to see anyone left out is all. I know how much I hated it. I wouldn’t even consider this unless it was common knowledge how little the chance is that your system would brick.
I got the update the night it was released, and I’ve had no problems with my PS3. Really hope you guys get it up and running again soon for those who didn’t get the chance to get it and those who ended up with a broken PS3.
echo307 can u tell me how to dl the 2.40?
cytricks…hey….I didn’t realize this, but on another one of these blogs I mentioned Super Stardust HD having in game custom music.
Well, here’s a post from another person, you may want to check out:
Sancho45 | July 5th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
@83 also does PAIN and High Velocity Bowling
echo307 can u invite me to that site please demonoid.com
Well Sancho45 is right for High Velocity Bowling…
I have that game and it has in game music and works exactly like the guy showed on the video.
It’s a downloaded game from the Playstation store if you wanted to try it.
I don’t see anything about trophies on this one, but the music does work.
The one difference with the Bowling game is to select the music on your HDD you have to press the select button on your controller, but it works just like the video said.
Is there anybody out there who has 2.4 installed on their system that can play music during games? I tried playing my own music during pixeljunk monsters (just like in the video they posted) after downloading the update and it says the game dosn’t support saved media. Am I missing something?
