As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.
jpn import u can check ps3hacks.com and see if its there,eye knows theres one but its .rar
Having some issues getting it installed on the jump drive just right so the PS3 will recognize it as an update. Stay tuned.
eyed just wait though
Oh boy, here we go… installing now… My heart is racing…
It doesn’t work. It gets exactly 69% of the way done copying the data from the USB, and then it pops up a message saying the data is corrupted, giving me the error code 8002F997. I could probably try and do it a different way, but I think I’ve pressed my luck enough already, especially with a brand new 80GB system.
@1695
Oh Echo307, I just thought of something…you may have to create a PS3 folder to save the fw in order for your system to recognize it.
I think so at least, don’t quote me on it though…I think I remembered doing that when I upgraded my HDD and I had to have the my system to read the fw from my thumb drive
Yeah, you have to create a PS3 folder, and then an update folder inside of it. Inside the update folder goes the data. That part worked, just not the copying of the data.
Wow, you must like taking chances Echo307.
If I didn’t have it already, I’d be waiting for the official patch.
If you screw up your PS3…since it’s from another site…
It’s not the system you screw up, it’s the hard drive. You can buy a new one of those for much cheaper than a new system. Plus, I’ve found what seems to be a working way to fix your HD after the corrupted patch. Several people have told me a way that works.
@1699
Oh well never mind what I said then, HA. Hey, but at least it gave you a error message and kicked you back out of it w/o messing up you current fw.
But then that begs the question, how come that same sort of ‘error’ proofing in your system didn’t kick in for those (w/ systems) that had the fw go completely through, then have their system start messsing up after the DL?
Yah true enough…but I like to play it safe.
Why install a new HD and then have to get all the stuff you had on the old one all over again.
Sounds like a lot of work to me instead of waiting for a bit.
1705, very true.
1704, I think it was the torrent file that was corrupted, and not the patch. Now, I’m going to be a complete moron and try it all over again. I’ll update again when I’m done.
@1705, second that.
Nope, didn’t work the second time either. I could go through the entire process of recopying the torrent file from scratch, but I think I’ve tested fate enough for one day. Now, I think people should commend me for being the only one on here that was brave enough to try this… or perhaps I should be stoned for being the only one here that was stupid enough to try this.
xD….
@1707, man, I can’t help but admire your ‘testicular fortitude’ for having another go at it, LOL.
You must have a fairly new system or at least one that you don’t have a abundance of stuff stored. B/c I’d be too scared as hell to try it again…LOL.
Bravery, my friend….you certainly have it, possibly w/ a touch of madness. :)
@1709,
Well for surviving TWO back-to-back tries–you got my props!
Echo307…you are a dedicated PS3 fan I think.
Sounds like you’d do anything just to get the latest update for your gaming.
Some of us aren’t as brave as you are.
And you know…you have more knowledge on a lot of this stuff than many I’ve seen posting here.
Thanks 1710, and I’d like to say a quick something about this blog and the people that come here if I may.
I just started checking this site when the 2.4 patch hit, but I must say that from the very little I have seen and done here, this is a fantastic base of users and friends. All kinds of diversity, and what seems to be people from all walks of thought. There have been some people that are obviously a few pine trees short of a forrest, but there have been some others that have been very logical, and very helpful about this whole firmware problem. I’d just like to say that I’m impressed with what I’ve seen. Anyone on here that wants to throw me on their friends’ list to play some games one day, please feel free. Echo307 is the ID.
Thanks guys!
Hey thanks for all the props. I am a dedicated Sony guy, but even more than that, I wanted to try something new and see what would happen. More than anything, I was thinking about what would happen if I got it to work. What if I could have been that guy that gave all the other die hard Sony fans that missed the patch an alternative to waiting.
I would’ve loved to have been that guy.
Thanks again!
Echo307 exactly….you would have been the pioneer.
Here’s something that may interest all of the fans out there…actually posted it in another blog, but seeing some people don’t always read stuff…take a look.
Sounds like we have great stuff coming up in the near future for PS3.
PSXExtreme has this article out:
“Sony: Open Home Beta “Fully Robust”
It used to dominate the news on a weekly basis, especially in the months directly after its unveiling, but since then, we haven’t heard much about PlayStation Home. We’re well aware of the delays, of course, but the last report says an open beta is scheduled for this fall. Well, that’s still the case, as Sony’s PlayStation Network director Eric Lempel says.
In a recent interview with Next-Gen, he said very clearly- “The Home open beta is still on schedule for release later this fall.” He was asked about PSN director Susan Panico’s earlier comments when she said the initial beta rollout would be “similar to Gmail” and it will work just fine as an “open, functioning beta.” This statement was met with mixed results by gamers; some still bitter about the delay saw this as an excuse to release a half-done Home this year. But that really is not the case:
“If you think about Gmail and Susans reference, Gmail when it launched in beta was a fully functional email service. I personally was using it and it offered everything youd expect, but was in beta just to say that theres more to come and maybe its not fully polished. The reason weve been delaying [Home] is so that we can deliver a high quality service that the users will enjoy. Even though it will be in beta, it will be a fair representation of what the service can be and its potential, so it wont be a 0.5 release, it will be a fully robust service.”
So there you have it. Despite the fact that the official launch of Home remains in 2009, we’ll still be able to jump in and test it out this fall. Besides, one has to remember that Home will likely be a service that receives ongoing upgrades and enhancements even after its official release, so if you look at it this way, the open beta rollout isn’t much different than a regular ol’ launch. Oh, and just as a final side note, Lempel did reconfirm Sony’s plan to launch a downloadable movie service for the PS3 in the US this summer. That is a very cool option, and one that should make selling PS3s an even easier proposition.”
I just hope the downloadable movie service will be available to other countries soon too.
Canada for one….but understand US and Canada may have different legal issues.
I used gmail when it was in beta service also, and it worked fine. I’m looking forward to checking out Home, and seeing what all it can do.
@1717,
Heck yeah, I’ve been interested in Home for a while but w/ all the push backs and things how hard it is to even get dibs on getting to beta test it I think that’s what made it loose a little steam to gamers.
If anything as using Gmail as an example, they need to open the beta up to a little bit more than a minute group of ‘luckies’, you know to kinda help broaden out the user base and experience a little bit more.
I agree. I can understand making it a small user base of beta testers, but if they were willing to open it up like they did the Socom beta, I think they could get some better feedback.
I read that earlier too…but I may be wrong…it sounds like they’re going to open up home this fall for everyone…but it will be in beta mode…(think the other beta people have done their testing and they need the masses now to join to see what the server impact will be when it does go live).
By the way Echo307, just sent out an add to my friends list, but since I have 2.40 already installed, not sure if you’ll see it until you update or not.
I got it, but still no 2.4 for me… yet.
PSN beefy_01
has anyone had problems with there console reading disks?
Ok great….well when you do get it, there’s an option that you can check out the trophies I have and vice versa…kind of a nice idea actually.
Really like the avatar you have.
my mic has been messed up ever sence i downloaded and i just went out and spent 30 dollars on a new headset and guess what…A WASTE OF MONEY im very mad
Ok great….well when you do get it, there’s an option that you can check out the trophies I have and vice versa…kind of a nice idea actually. Showing you right now with none.
Really like the avatar you have.
1723, I have seen all of the vids about the new trophies, so I am aware of how they work. I am looking forward to being able to get them!
Sorry for that double post….the blog got a Gateway error there for a minute and it appeared my post didn’t go through.
1722, did you just start having this problem after the 2.4 update?
yer i did jus wont read any of my disks
i just get the little revolving symbol in the top right hand corner but the icon of the disk does not appear?
Problem: PS3 freezes on start after updating.
Hypothesis: Honestly the problem I think people are facing is HDD caused. With this new update it uses a lot of virtual memory and memory casheing on the HDD. If people have corrupted data on the HDD or bad sectors it could be the cause of the freezes.
Research: For the people that have the problem have you ever switch off to turn off and not doing it the right way. Have you cancel a install even though it told you not to. Even if these thing were not totally your fault it could cause the HDD to build corruption and bad sectors.
Experiment: People having the problem reported after formatting the HDD …(wiping away all the corruption and bad sectors) the ps3 loads up
Conclusion: In this firmware up the ps3 OS is using more of the HDD for virtual memory and casheing to allow for in-game XMB. How else would it get the memory to run MGS4 or UT3 and allow the XMB to appear? So if you got a this problem I either way you saves is gone weather you send the console in for format it yourself so give it a try and see. For the rest of us HORRAY!!! we took good care of your ps3 or just got lucky that we just got some minor hiccups from abuse.
…yeah… what he said…
just wonderin if anyone else had that problem?
1731 is talkin about freezing im talking about something different
Yeah, I’ve seen some people with that problem, but it doesn’t seem to be a common thing. The best advice I could give you is to call Sony, unless you want to get really technical with it.
what would be the best bet and how technical?
i just got a message on here saying posting comments too quickly slow down
well if they cant manage a few comments
the servers must be pretty bad
whats the number for sony in the uk
i am talking about freezings and not loading up all you see are waves and people having sluggish bad preformance after setting it up… (if you got it setup already dont format your HDD and jinx yourself)
@ 1731
If i remember correctly Sony has always reserved some ram from the games so they could one day do this (thats why no game patching is needed to run IGXMB)
no i can get to the the home menu thing fine but the console wont read my disks at all?
any clues of why that is and what i can do
I received the update when it came out and the SSHD 4.0 update and everything is working great so far. About 2 months ago I upgraded my HDD to a 200 GB 7200 rpm and have enjoyed the little performance boost and the extra space, I have a lot of the downloadable content.
I also have a external USB hard drive that I backup my HDD before I go to work once a month so its done when I get home. Nothing with technology is perfect, always backup data.
Well i guess there is the off chance both could fail. :)
sooo what’s the status ?
and…ammm
