As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

The US FW update is incompatible with the EU version since the EU PS3 has a different video resolutions for their HD setups, there a few pixels sharper and so the US FW update would not work with the TV sets in the EU unless they had NTSC tuners which I highly doubt.
@lilbuddy try choosing the folder that the songs are located in, then hit the triangle button to play and all the songs in that folder should play…
I am not sure but I don’t think my audio player got replaced???? I was looking at a thread with pics and tried to go into GT5P like his photo and do the same but I can’t get the “new” media player mini-controller up on the screen so guess I’ll have to wait to see if the re-release is a newer version of what I have since you can not go backwards with an update…
Thx again Shogun! I know you are right, and besides, I don’t even have the 4.00 SSHD patch yet, so what’s the point huh? I just wish Sony would give us al little update you know?! Oh well, back to rollin anotha spliff like the Ganja Queen… lol. I am from Holland you know… :-)
so if i downloaded 2.40 f/w and having some lock ups and so restarts after i quit a game i should reformat my hdd? but wouldnt that just erase everything including 2.40???
I created a Playstation Underground Account just to post this message – “My problems with 2.40”
Okay – I installed it and everything seemed totally normal. The update was lookin’ good and doing what I hoped it would. I was on easy street. No bricking. I could explore my freinds profile and I was looking forward to in-game messaging which to me the biggest reason for the update. (Keep in mind trophies don’t excite me and I’m the guy that prefers to stay in the “unranked” rooms and let the kids argue and play on their own)
Then, silly me, I tried to play a game. I started with MGS and immediately noticed the title screen lagged. No worries – not like I was locked into fist’n’cuff with Liquid.
Took MGS on-line and navigated successfully to a room. When I arrived the room went frozen with its “Unstable Connection” deal and after a short time I got booted. I reloaded into another room and got booted again.
I work in tech so I began trying a variety of server/rooms and even adjusted my port settings but always got booted.
Then i noticed a buddy was on and, using my wicked XMB, I sent him a message. Maybe coincidence but my buddy got booted from his game.
Nonetheless I’m now several days into the “update” and I am now officially tossed to the wayside in MGO by 2.40.
So I tried GTA. Yep…. so that’s what playing GTA in a strobe-filter would look like huh? To say there was lag would be to an understatement. For a moment I though that I was in a claymation stop-motion animation.
So no dice there.
Basically – 2.40 has taken my PS3 and said: “So you want to be like X-Box Live but only better huh? Well – NO ON-LINE FOR YOU!!”
So, being a good consumer I have been waiting. Yep – waiting. For…..?
And thats the thing… Hello? Sony? You there? It’s me! You know – they guy that splashed $600 on this thing. The guy you promised this XMB (and a number of other things) too but couldn’t quiet deliver?
I’m all over you working on the bugs and getting it fixed. I think thats great and I’m looking forward to sharing it with my buddies and all. Do you think – oh – you know – you could let me know something? Like when can I get back to enjoying on-line gaming?
Not asking for much hear – just an update. Being put on hold for this long is not what I would refer to as a sound marketting strategy.
Anyway – that’s my deal. This weekend when my friends have time to make it in from out of town they come over to my house and want to play PS3 (particularly Richard who was the buddy I traded off controllers and chips to back in ’85 when we took Snake into the jungle with nothing more then a knife and a cigarette). Yep – he comes over to experience the glory of MGS4 and reconnect with our youth and I feed him a fantastic game that lags even off-line making Snake look like Charlie Chaplain. Tell you – defending PS3 over the last 24 hours has been – well – exhausting.
Don’t know quite where I’m going with this – just wanted to let you know that your still loyal customer is becoming increasingly sad by your continual marketing blunders, constant delays, and veil of silence.
One post saying “2.40 has had many unforeseen problems and at this time we project a (fill in time frame here) delay” would go a long way to recharging my patience in a company that seems to be consumed with the idea that stringing me along is the best method to repay my support for all the years (if not decades).
This would be a good time to save face and step up.
At this point in my PS1/2/3 time I can safely say that getting excited about 2.40 and downloading it when you said it was ready has been the worst decision I have made in my long PS career (even bak to PS1)
I kinda blame me. I should know better then to listen to what you guys say anyway.
Thank you for your comment Speed Racer! I didn’t know that… I’m just gonna wait like all of you guys! One big not so happy family, but he?! It’s family… :-)
While I’m loving the update, a lot of PS3 owners STILL don’t have it. SONY’s first major attempt at turning the PS3 userbase into a true community has been an epic failure.
@1647 (Spiedr) not saying you haven’t done this yet…but have you called Sony about your problem ?
They’re working on issues as they hear about them…I don’t think they have time right now to look at these blogs.
2.40 is working fine for me…no problems and I got it right after midnight July 2nd.
same here…got it midnight july 2nd and it’s been fine
no problems at all
@1651
Man you’re lucky, LOL. Actually I read on here that a lot of ppl mentioned on or around the 2nd as being the date that they first DLed it. I wonder when it was originally uploaded on the servers?
It must’ve became available around July 1 or something b/c I had check around the end of June and still hadn’t seen it, but I didn’t even think about it again until around the very beginning of this month. Hell, by a couple of days ago I had started hearing about the pulling of it…so it must not have been up very long before the brick PS3 reports had started coming in, I guess…
It was up around 8-10 hours I think before it got pulled…I knew if was going to be available from the Blogs on July 2nd, so about 2 seconds after midnight I downloaded it.
I took holidays this week (not knowing about the release date) and didn’t have many plans, but I’ve had one of the best holidays in a long time just gaming.
Got a swollen thumb from playing Super Stardust HD so much !
Super Stardust HD is awesome!
try listening to the metalocalypse album while playing
you’ll stay stuck for hours
Wow to think I really missed it by that much….yuck! xD
The funny thing is I was actually up that late, but since I just checked my system literally like a few days before June ended–I wasn’t really anticipating checking it again until after the holiday….man, go figure the one time I chose not to check would be the day it was released. I guess Lady Luck is definitely NOT who I am, LOL.
…ah well, the wait will continue. :)
Actually download Super Stardust HD demo back in Jan 08 and that same day got the full game.
I have to say it’s addicting and now with the trophies, soooo much better.
Not sure if people know…but the in game custom music has been available on Super Stardust for a while now (at least it worked on my PS3…I’ve been listening to my own HDD music a while)….guess they just need developers to start using it now for other games.
soooo no update back yet, i wonder, are the people with 2.36 able to play vs people with 2.40 or is the community split up until everyone gets the 2.40 update?
also.. couldnt sony get someone to work on this on the weekend or what??
of course they could get someone to work on it today….i know lots of ppl that HAD to work yesterday.
Sony doesnt care. they got our money. its not like we can get it back from them so why should they work overtime to fix it.
they will fix it when THEY are ready. I am sure they are playing their PS3’s right now, laughing at us.
or who knows?….maybe they are all playing their *box….lol
Yah they may be playing their own PS3’s most likely trying to see what the bug is with 2.40.
I’ll bet there’s a bunch of them working on it now.
Most companies have 24/7 support now a days.
I know as I work in one now.
you dont work for Sony. so you dont know what they are doing.
They could at least keep us updated. When was the last day they told us something about 2.40?
That is unacceptable.
Thank God we have people like the ganja queen to figure all of this out for us. It’s amazing the level of intelligence she brings to the forum. It’s funny, I was just watching documentary about the REAL ganja queen, you know, the one locked up in Bali. Hilarious. After I saw the “thanks yo” in your last post made me realize the mentality I’m dealing with here. The lol was another tell tale sign of your lack of maturity. So, if I were you “yo”, I would put the blunt out and maybe focus your energy on trying to get some answers like the rest of us. Peace out yo.
@1658,
Nah, I don’t really think it would be any sort of ‘divide’ between users, if 2.36 users have the same core game as 2.40–I’ll use Metal Gear Online, as an example–then it shouldn’t be any issues if one or the other group of version players wanted to go toe-to-toe w/ one another, I would think.
No I don’t work for Sony true…but most big companies have this support.
I work for IBM and we support many other accounts that also have 24/7 support.
@1665
Ok, let me ask you this…..would your company go this long without releasing a statement of some kind?
That is the only thing most people on here are asking for…..some respect from Sony.
Burgerking579….the most recent blog out stated that the blog team is off for the weekend.
For that reason, we may not see anything until Monday, but who knows, they may just post something earlier…stay tuned.
Burgerkin579….if my company wasn’t sure what the problem was yet, yes they would most likely not post anything until they were certain.
Why post something that later turns out to be untrue…you’d never hear the end of it from some of these people.
A couple of days of waiting is really not that bad.
Why put something out and have other people have major problems…when it’s fixed…you’ll get your patch.
right the blog team…..what about jeff?
he posted earlier. what about eric?
how hard is it for them to grab a laptop, log into the system and type a message. if they cant do that we will never have a good firmware..lol
is the blog team fixing 2.40?
someone could take 5 minutes and tell us SOMETHING
thats all i ask….if they tell me they dont know what the problem is….at least they told me something….ya know????
They did say on their blog to stay tuned and when they know…they will inform all of us.
Actually I understand your frustration.
Just playing devil’s advocate here.
If I didn’t have the patch, I wouldn’t be happy either, but hey, if my PS3 didn’t work, I would be even more upset.
i know, but it would be nice to here something more official.
i mean 1671 comments and jeff posted one time???
thats a joke…..he doesnt work on it…he’s the social media manager
so if jeff isn’t telling us anything….what exactly is he managing……lol
yaaaa so we keep staying tuned…waiting for some news…..while they are at the beach….lol
really, i dont think they really care that much
lets go out and have some fun as well lol
as long as your idea of fun isnt playing our $600 paperweight….
Like a few others have stated:
I’d rather they be working on the bug and not updating the blog.
as long as we know they are working
well, ive had my fun for today…
who knew talking about your ps3 could be more fun than staring at it???
im outta here
They stated this in this blog (last sentence):
“We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”
i have had just one game freeze up on me since the update.i have one of the first 60G PS3’s.
@1663
Lack of maturity?? Really…are you looking in mirror as you type this stuff?
Why because I choose to use a little slang or shorthand some things w/ a ‘LOL’ here and there to express the light-hearted side of a person that I am?
…man, you really have nothing better to do then to go out of your way to make childish side chatter w/ me? Whose the one really misplacing their energy? Let me ask you, buddy, what answers by chance are you looking to ‘get’ from Sony on a Saturday evening (or whatever time zone you happen to be in), huh?
Well let me help you w/ that…NONE…why, because it’s the weekend. Period. Those that are still hyped up to a call of arms might as well just pack up that misplaced energy and save it for Monday. Nothing is gonna make them answer today or tomorrow (Sunday) so there’s no need to get bent about ‘focusing’ energy on something we’re not gonna find answers to over the weekend.
With that said, I’ve moved on from our little conversations…nice little tit-for-tat w/ you though.
Demonoid.com has the patch up for download. Although it’s a huge risk, I’m going to install it as soon as I get done downloading… I’ll update within the hour and let you guys know if it works for me.
the SSDHD patch?
No, the 2.4 patch. By the way, I heard they pulled the SSDHD patch as well… any truth in that?
If they are working on the problem is good, but just popping in on the blog just to say
“Hey Guys we know you have been waiting long, and we are working hard on the issue, we are almost there..” that is good too… and wat, it will only take up 2 mins of their day to post that
Unless they are not “almost there”
…and putting up a blog that says, “we have no clue what’s wrong” would only frustrate people even more.
@1682
Man, Echo307, are you sure you wanna do that?? That’s more than a huge risk, that’s a pretty DAMN huge risk….
Have people on Demonoid commented yet on whether it worked for them yet?
Wow…you’re a brave soul. Just make sure you take extra precautions (backups, etc) before you follow through. Good Luck, keep us posted.
@1684,
Yeah, from what’s been going around, it seems they pulled that too. From what ppl been saying, I think they did around the same time they pulled 2.4.
I’ve got it downloaded and I am starting it now. My theory is, if this particular d/l bricked someone’s system, how would they have gotten it off the hard drive to put on the net? Also, I have nothing on my h/d that I’m too attatched too, so it’s all good. Should be able to let you guys know really quick. Also, several other people have the patch downloaded, and no one has said that anything is wrong with it.
eye understand why ssdh was pulled but my 2.40 works fine yet eye still cant get any trophies thats kinda laim
@1690,
I’m thinking whoever uploaded the file onto Demonoid probably did their firmware DL from their PC (or Mac) straight to a USB or SD card; then got the system to pull the update from whatever storage device they used.
So I’m thinking if that person did a clean DL from their PC they might have had some successful, at least I hope that wouldn’t be trying to set up other PS3 users if it didn’t work…
But if you said more than a few ppl did it already and no complaints it may be a little more reassuring.
Unfortunately, I can’t try it….my system’s a JPN import.
I’m pretty damn sure I’d brick mines for real if I did…
