Firmware v2.40 status

2,454 0

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

  • Dude the reason why it’s so [DELETED] is because you guy’s are always rushing sony to realesed everything if you guy would let them worked on things a bit longer maybe everything wouldn’t crsh and i’m las that they havn’t realesed home yet because if they did that [DELETED] would be laggy as hell.

  • I notice a lot of people are upset that Sony has not said anything about what is going on. It seems some people forget that Sony is a bussiness, and just like 90+% of all other bussinesses out there, they’ve probably given most of their employees the holiday weekend off.

I know everyone is anxious to see what happens and get the patch, but I wouldn’t expect to hear anything before Monday. With that being said, I do expect to hear them say something on Monday.

  • Echo Sony is a Global company and I would think the the whole world isn’t off for the US’s Independence day..
I also think the firmwares are built in japan at Sony HQ

  • Right, but the people that update this blog live in America, and this seems to be the main source of info for the most of us. If anything is said in the next 48 hours, I would be surprised.

  • But Hunter you are correct, and I didn’t really think about that before posting. Thanks.

  • Well, so far, I don’t know one single person who’s had problems with this firmware in RSA?

Maybe these people with problems’ download some how got corrupted?

  • Sony, Jeff, Lempel or however. Give us a damn update on this situation.

  • 1550, I have heard of a couple of people on mixed forums saying their system has crashed, but it’s like a 1/500 ratio when you compare to all of the people that say the update has worked fine for them.

  • 1552, I agree, I’m not saying the people are lying! :P All I mean is that it seems to be a small minority.

  • 1553, we’re on the same page. It just seems to me that as small as this seems to be, Sony could have patched a fix without pulling the plug completely. But on the other hand, if it’s truly bricking systems without a fix other than sending the unit in to Sony, then I can see why they would yank it.

  • EDIT: Thee 2.40 Update is now online again and available for download. Supposedly there was nothign wrong with the firmware. What caused problems was on some peoples PS3s it did not download correctly so when it installed it was corrupt.

Now that I think about it, many people ive seen with the problem used WiFi to download it. And im pretty sure in the PS3 manual it says you should use a wired connection for downloading updates.

  • 2.4 is NOT back up. Just checked.

  • And if it was something as simple as a wi-fi download causing this issue, Sony probably would have figured that out by now.

  • I always download my updates via a wireless connection and I have never experienced any problems whatsoever. I do not think wifi was the cause of the problem.

  • i had a chance to download it but i didnt then i found out on google news that Sony pulled out 2.4 and i was piss . i hope Sony gets it back on for us ASaP . I Love the PsTre Keep doin wat u doin SONY

My update works fine don’t know what your all on about, if it dose brick your console just format the HD on your PC and away we go . . .

As for any one moaning at Sony,

    1. would like to see you do any better,

    2. stop your wining or go away and play with a more simple system designed with a special feature for when you console dose break so you do know when your F**Ked.

this issue is miniscule stop winging. The PS3 is far more complex than any other system its bound to have some issues. If you cant deal with the down side to having something this good then why are you still here ?

  • I figured out how to format my unmountable 320GB drive and got my PS3 working again.

The drive originally came out of a Western Digital Passport Essential, and I simply reused its USB to SATA enclosure to format it with my laptop running Linux Mint.

For those that want to know how to format an unmountable encrypted PS3 hard drive via a USB to SATA enclosure using Linux:

    1. Hook up the enclosure to your computer via USB.

    2. Open a terminal and type lsusb (should return external drive info)

    3. Then type fdisk -l (should return the location of the external drive, which in my case was /dev/sdb)

    4. Then format the (unmounted!) external drive by typing mkfs.msdos /dev/sdb -I (note: your location will vary)

    5. After formating is complete, unplug and plug in the USB enclosure. Linux, XP, OSX, PS3 etc should now be able to detect it as a newly formatted FAT32 hard drive.:)

  • With that said, all I need now is a 2.41 patch so I can swap my 60GB drive back in long enough to back up all of its data and migrate it to my 320GB drive. :)

  • For me the 2.40 Update works flawless – no glitches at all !!! But Sony … if you work on 2.41 anyway, please change the castrated date on the clock to the full format, like dd/mm/yyy hh:mm ! And please move it to another place, maybe to the left side, so it doesn’t interfere with the controller battery and the PS3-Network status display !
Just some minor changes that could be done incidentally. ;-)

  • Sorry, one suggestion again – maybe just move the battery bar somewhere else, I don’t have the feeling that the PS3-network status display really interfere with the clock and I’m feeling the clock is right on the right top corner…
    Ciao

  • @1565

Yeah, they need to move the battery status bar somewhere else. I’m surprised they didn’t come across that small problem.

To me, if you have 2.4 well then it’s the beta version of 2.4 :)

  • this is really annoying. all that time i have been waiting and i didnt even get a chance to try and update it. how long is going to take you guys to fix this now before i can use it

  • ahahah , i have 2.40 a no have nay probems , is fantastic , thanks sony !

  • 1567, I agree, i wasn’t on the PS3 on the 2cnd so i couldnt update, and from what im hearing only a few people had problems with 2.4.

Sony, please give people some info of when 2.4 will be updated again!

  • i love that people think that the 2.4 is not finished. its just people are idiots and cant install an update and ruined it for the rest of the people.

Sure, because some people are idiots and too stupid of how to install a firmware update, that’s why Sony removed it….

Don’t accuse people before any official statement has been brought by Sony.

I have to agree on that. Its weird to see “signed in” … “you have a new message” with the clock showing straight through it. Plus the size of the characters somewhat bigger would be sure great.

  • terminatorvsmtrx

you say there are no reports of problems if you have a successful install but how come i cant play my own music in the background of pixeljunk monsters like you guys show in the video.. i also cant play music in the background of PAIN and i thought it was supposed to support it too… also when i go to the xmb in game it is extremely slow in the loading department.. make this a 2.41 update so we can have our 2.4’s fixed

  • haha, now I feel like throwing my PS3 out of the window :P

  • I did not read all of these, but if you feel like gambling with a “broken firmware”, the file is available at ps3-hacks.com. Just install it from removable media. That is if you wish to risk it. The update worked fine for me.

Except for the huge disappointment that was in game music. Also one personal complaint.

I bought SSD HD and it supports custom soundtracks the same as it ever did. What I mean is the in game xmb music player has nothing to do with the function in game. It seems like Sony flat out lied about that portion at least. SSD HD always worked with music just like now. Weak

  • look sony ok right heres my beef.

firstly i feel misled about the ingame tracks becuase you clearly played one in pixel junk monsters y’know why didnt you use SSHD ? so we belive you can play custom tracks in any game and you cant its the devs.. kinda not what we wanted.

sencondly basically at the moment 2.40 is just well in gae text messaging, im not complaining about trophies because sony seriously cant do anything about that, that is purely the devs choice and they will come.

thirdly why is there no voice chat people did say this to you and if you heard we wanted in game messages then you should of heard we wanted voice chat too.

fourthly im pretty ashamed of the lack of response between manafacturer and customer. to be honest its pretty poor its been 2 days now and not a word about 2.40 you could give us daily updates saying were working on it and then give us discriptions of what your doing, y’know to keep the customer informed, but i feel a little left hung out to dry about the lack of information.

lastly i really suggest you fix 2.40 and call it 2.41 and impliment at least a universal game music player. sony the ps3 is powerful you can do it, if it can run killzone 2 at a locked 30fps, then it can definetly run this.

p.s also about the music player. if one or two games doesnt work because of some problem then fine say i dunno SW LEGO for some reason wouldnt let you do it then you oculd try and get a patch out there for it but not a patch for every game its a bit ridiculous. i would love to say i am pleased with 2.40 but i feel a little thirsty for more. i seriously hope you do this.

    2.41 = in game music FTW !!!!!!
    2.41 = just a fix……FAIL

  • updated my ps3 and works perfect!, but should throw in a Flash Player update!!

  • It seems that the 40Gb version is the console that has the problem, but the old 60Gb version can handel the “buggy” firmware 2.4.

Thats my conclusion of everything i read in the internet. I also have a 60Gb version and no problem for me.

  • Firmware update 2.40 has “bricked” my unit, an early 60GB model. Sony sent a replacement machine to me within 24 hours – which is faulty. The disc drive does not work. Sony have confirmed that the replacement machine was not new, but “remanufactured” from faulty machines originally regarded as unfit for sale. They have offered to send a further replacement, inferring generosity as my original machine was no longer under warranty! I have now requested a new, boxed, standard “40GB” model with additional compensation for its lower specification and price, and the inconvenience I have suffered. Sony are resisting this and so far a promised call from a supervisor to discuss the position has not materialised. I believe that Sony are trying to “cover up” this monumental firmware release error, and seeking to “fob off” affected customers with inferior machines – which arrive unboxed with no accessories, paperwork or guarantee.

  • I have a 40GB (but changed the hdd for a 250GB) and did’nt have a problem, works perfect.

  • SONY PLEASE!!!!,

FLASH PLAYER UPDATE!!FLASH PLAYER UPDATE!!FLASH PLAYER UPDATE!!FLASH PLAYER UPDATE!!FLASH PLAYER UPDATE!!FLASH PLAYER UPDATE!!

  • Oki thred 1579, has broken my theory that only the new 40Gb version can´t handle the 2.4.

Ihope the best for Sony, that they will achive somehow to fix al this bad, that has happend to the PS3…

But the X360 is even worst of it´s REO-Death and people are so dumb that they continue to support microsoft, but the question is if Sony-supporter is as “dumb” ….

maby Sony will give on the E3, all the PS3 owners “home” or somthing to comfort on…

  • @ njohan

yeah i know, it’s incredible that XBOX 360 has a system that let’s you know you’re fu%# up!(RROD), makes me wonder, did they know that was gonna happen?

  • im still waiting…. how long doest it take to fix the update?? i want it noowwwww lol

    also…. flash 10 support would be good…with gpu usage…..

  • @ raconus787 (Thred 1581)

    Well i have a HD 300Gb, and have´t had any problem with my PS3 60gb version (EU-version).

Sony should to a “question form” that…. Do you have problem your new 40Gb version or the 60Gb version, or…. you who have change the drive on your PS3 do you have any problem with your PS3.

Well this is day three, i hope the new “2.41” will come TO DAY or monday, thuesday or so… the moore days they whait in, the moore people will be disappointed in Sony.

  • For the second time:all PS blog bebes shut up sony is doing all there best to fix the update problem so be patient

  • @ njohan

bottom line is that i don’t think that this has to do with whatever PS3 version you have. the only difference between PS3 versions are the HDDs(which can be changed) and backward compatibility(reads PS2 games). All the other stuff is the same!!, i hate people (not refering to you) that think that one PS3 version is better than the other. The fact that you bought the first version that cameout doesn’t mean that they bought the BEST console. Look what happened to the first people that bought the X360 .

Ok I am encountering this problem after downloading and installing the 2.4 update successfully. I have Unreal Tournament 3 and has worked properly in the past online. Unfortunately, I went online and joined a match and got connected, upon loading it and connecting to the match (loading screen) it would just suddenly freeze not allowing me to continue, my controller freezed on the loading screen and I had to shut it down. As the PS3 was shutting down I would hear like 3 beeps which meant that its a force shut down.

I have tried to play online on different matches but the same thing would happen over and over again.

Just to note: I have a 60gb EU system and the US version of Unreal Tournament 3. Before the 2.4 update it worked perfectly. Is anyone else encountering this problem also? I also urge Sony to take serious actions towards the next firmware.

  • @1588 The time for patience has come and gone, we need some answers. it’s been 3 days now. Nobody here is crying, we just expect a little better treatment and some honest communication. Maybe that seems like to much to ask to some people. I’m not one of those people. They promised a service and that service is still unavailable. Explain to me what’s so difficult about posting one sentence letting us know the status of this update? Don’t act like we are being unreasonable, we’ve been patient, we need some answers now.

  • I want this worked out so I can install the new 2.4 and get my PS3 back to not timing out on all media server connections for streaming, web browsing, not to mention that it now randomly freezes / lags playing ps2 and ps3 games
