Firmware v2.40 status

2,454 0

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

  • Sony come on give us update.

  • Im not surprised about this. When it comes to things like this Sony are always inconsiderate towards their customers. Unless they know for sure when they will re-release the patch they will never comment on the status or give any small details regarding their progress. Not the first time they have acted like this, its really pathetic. Man up for your faults and don’t leave your customers in the dark.

  • didn’t they test the update b4 they put it up in the 1st place?

  • what about the people who already downloaded the update and has no problems

  • Let me guess, first regular PSP, than PSP Slim! What about people with a regular PSP, they want a slim too! Now I have a PS3 80 gb, (good thing waited or I would be stuck with a 60 Gb one!) Now what’s next PS3 slim, since it’s huge! Or maybe a 120 gb PS3 with faster hard-drive and better graphics that’s cheaper than the 80 gb! Man don’t get me wrong, I love the PS3 more than anything, and my PSP, but just saying!

  • @1502

What are you talking about? First off the 60 gb system IMO is better than the 80gb. If I wanted a bigger hard drive and I do Ill just go out and buy one and put it in my system. Also if you want a PSP slim then buy it.

  • For crying out loud, the blog is called “firmware 2.40 STATUS” and at the end is stated we will keep you posted as necessary…well this is necessary come on don’t wait till its up unless its coming back up today, otherwise tell us now.

  • I agree. To just pull it and give no details about what they are doing to fix it or how long it may take is unacceptable. I understand it’s a holiday weekend but I feel like all they should have said was no, there will be no 2.40 until after the holiday weekend. How difficult is that? Instead you have all of your customers getting more frustrated while nothing gets explained or accomplished. I love my PS3 but this type of thing is really frustrating considering how long we’ve already waited for this update and how much they hyped it the day before it’s release. Someone at sony needs to man up and let us know what the status is.

  • Should I GET ANY SORT OF COMPENSATION for 1 whole month without a PS3?

Great timing, hot days = stay home bored

  • This whole thing has turned into a nightmare. You have half the people who did get to download it having problems, then you have the rest of us that never even got the chance to install it wondering when or if we ever will. All they need to do is acknowledge they have a problem and ensure us they are taking the necessary actions to remedy this mess. Instead they ignore us and don’t say anything.

  • I’m a betting man – 2 to 1 says they’re hard at work to include a universal music player… hell even when i’m proven wrong we still don’t have anymore than we already did

  • i think they are sitting at home, drinking beer and shooting fireworks and not giving this any thought

  • @1505
Do you know anything about computer programming at all???!! It’s hard enough to find and fix bugs if there’s a definite pattern to them, but if there’s not a pattern, the problem could be ANYWHERE. For all they know, they’ll have to slog through a few million lines of code before they find what is wrong and then they have to fix it too.

Given that, how, pray tell, do you expect them to know how long it will take them to fix it? And would you rather them tell you it will be fixed on July 6, 2008 AD at 3:04 and 57.98 seconds EST and then it’s not done by then??

Seriously man, try this little exercise called THINKING before you start whining…..

  • I updated July 3 around 12:30 a.m. and my ps3 is completely not working I finally was able to get to the restore ps3 menu and now i’m reformatting. hopefully that does something. Before the update I had absolutely no problems.

  • @1509 finally someone else who knows the agony that many programmers go through.

Yes, and each person seems to be listing different things wrong (some are identical but many aren’t).

Just letting all know that I updated July 2nd and my PS3 is still working fine; no problems what so ever.

They’re probably testing so many different things right now and unless they can recreate the situation, it’s hard telling what the problem could be….it may be as simple as someone shutting their system off or a glich in their internet service that caused this and not the update at all.

  • Me too I update at 12:30am, and the update has work well in my ps3. maybe it affected you guys because supposely it said on the news that sony’s website had been hacked, maybe they crashed the hole file for you guys. They couldnt wait lol!! or could they (microsoft)*Cough** lol!! joking

  • @Man_Lord17

Maybe I’m slow tonight due to lack of sleep this week, but took me a bit and then I totally understood your joke.

Thanks, I’m picking myself off the floor from falling over with laughter.

    Good one….I’m sure the 360 guys won’t appreciate it though :>}

  • @1508

    pure LOL

    :D come on sony

  • I was level two with the trophies 24 hours after the update was released. I have had no problems with the update and the XMB doesn’t lag. I’m waiting on that Burnout update on the 10th now. Yeah!

  • Like I said it’s posted all over the net still. But Sony pulled it for a reason so think twice before downloading it. That being said 2.40 is brilliant…best firmware update so far. You guys complaining have to give them a break…obviously, like other posters have stated you don’t understand IT or for that matter programming.

    http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=323204

  • @ Night Fox

You do know the Burnout update on the 10th will not add trophies…

  • @ Theossie

Yeah I know, but the in game custom soundtracks, new cars, and new online challenges, plus the day and night cycles r pretty cool, don’t u think? Do u have the game?

  • @1509 How hard is it to type a post with an update? What is so hard about that? How much thought does that require? You have got to be kidding me. Why don’t you stop trying to make excuses for them? I’m sure they don’t need YOUR help. You act like it’s impossible for them to explain how serious the problem is. If the guys at sony are as absent minded as you I can see why we haven’t heard anything………geek.

  • Not arguing with anyone here, but who’s to say Sony knows what the problem is yet ?
May be tougher than what we all think.
It’s only affected some people and others have no problems at all (me included).
Why make a statement that turns out to be inaccurate later on and then people complain that Sony couldn’t take the heat.

  • When will it be back up???

  • All I wanna know is when are they gonna put the firmware 4.0 for stardust up. At least for those with Software Update 2.4. Like you guys said, the problem is at a minimal…. Right???????/

  • so, if I don´t have any problem with the update, I don´t have to worry about???

  • apparently it’s not all that minimal

  • These are Sony’s exact words from the Blog above:

“We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.”

They say limited…..so until those are resolved I don’t think they’ll put the update out.

  • Sony is saying if you have the update you should be ok (just keep checking stuff).

I’ve been fine since I updated and the trophies and in game music works great on Super Stardust HD.

I’ve read a few other blogs where people have been posting they’re loving the update.

So it’ s really unfortunate a few of the ones that didn’t work are causing grief to so many other people.

But, like a few people commented they should make sure it’s good to put out….Sony isn’t taking a chnace and is holding the update just in case something did go wrong somewhere.

Like I mentioned before, I tried pretty much everything on the PS3 and it all works great.

  • @1517

I completely agree with you. It’s been almost 48 hours and there hasn’t even been an ETA posted by Sony.

I am a diehard Sony fan and even I’m getting seriously frustrated. I don’t care if it’s going to take a week to fix, just let us know now!!

I honestly expected more from Sony. If any Sony employee is reading my post – you really need to give us some information. This is incredibly damaging to Sony’s name. We all know that this isn’t the time for Sony to lose their own fans because of a lack of communication.

  • you know its the 4th of july for sony too. those people have friends and family just like the rest of us. let them have the night off. (personally, i’m ok if they take the weekend to collect themselves and then come back strong)

  • PhoenixBlack I agree with you too.

I know I’ve worked shift before and had to work holidays and I kind of have a feeling they have techs or developers working all kinds of hours. So who knows…their blog sounds as if they’re working with all the customers that do have an issue and once that’s all fixed, they’ll put the update up.

They most likely have to see what the majority of these people’s problem is first and then try to find a solution to that problem, test it and then put it out to you.

  • yes im sure rushing them to fix it will fix it.

eg. I made a car in less then 10 mins, “where is the steering wheel, and suspension?” Opps

  • I have a GREAT doubt: Wich games will play music in game with the in game XMB?? will you release a list with the compatible games? Or you will release patches for some games (such GTA IV, AO2, GT5, etc) to play music in game?

  • IvAINaRe…right now only Super Stardust has in game music. They said it up to the developers to put them in and the developers said they’re now interested in trying to use the new features in upcoming games…some said they may even patch some existing games. (Look back in this blog a ways back..there’s a item on it already).

  • You people seem to be missing the point here, the question isn’t about whether or not anyone deserves to take off for a holiday weekend or not, the question is why can’t they take 2 minutes to tell us what kind of progress they have made if any. I’m sure someone from sony has been reading this blog whether they are home eating hot dogs or in the office sweating through miles of code trying to find the problem. Not much effort is required to put out a simple statement letting us know what progress if any has been made. let’s not turn this into whether or not people deserve to spend the holiday with friends and family, that’s not what this is about.

  • Yah agree with you, but it really hasn’t been that long since they posted this one.

I’d rather them be fixing the bug than updating the blog.

  • Oh my…I give up.

  • Me too I’m out east and time to go to bed.

2.40 wore me out but it was a great holiday week off for sure…kind of a surprise.

People will have it soon and it’s nice, but remember, there’s lots that can still be added in future updates and I think Sony will get there.

  • Deadly_Mushroom

Any word on which companies will be patching their currently released games for in-game music? I know there will be no retroactive trophies, but I could care less about those, to be honest.

  • Look back in this blog….I think I left an article I found from PSXExtreme.com about a couple.

  • This is the one:

    “Developers Vow: Trophies Are Coming

As you all know, firmware update 2.40 is finally here, and it contains the long-awaited in-game XMB and Trophy support. However, many users are a little miffed at the idea that Trophies aren’t retroactive, which means they’d have to replay any games they’ve already completed to nab those Trophies. Furthermore, we don’t have a giant list of games coming out in the near future that will definitely support Trophies, although you can expect that all first-party games will.

However, developers are already starting to pledge their loyalty to the Trophy system, and we can expect many games, both old and new, to feature the option. It goes well beyond Super Stardust HD (the first game to allow Trophies); according to MCVUK, developers Criterion and Naughty dog have tossed their hat into the ring. They say that their biggest titles – Burnout Paradise and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, respectively – will soon get Trophies, and of course, this means future projects from these guys should also boast the support. There was a nasty rumor going around that only first-party titles would give us the Trophy option, but clearly, that isn’t the case. Now that the capability is officially here, more developers are ready and willing to give PS3 users the equivalent of the Achievements for the Xbox 360 versions of next-gen games.

In addition, we can expect those same developers to start taking advantage of the in-game XMB. Obviously, as it hasn’t been released until today, game makers haven’t had any call to implement an in-game XMB into the development process for any given title. But all that has changed. New customization options are fun for all!”

  • I feel sorry for those that got the update, and it did whatever to their ps3’s to stop it from working. Hmmm… I i think by Monday (hoping anyways) that things will look a little brighter for those few having issues, or for those just patiently (and impatiently) waiting for the update. Could Sony really go all weekend without saying anything at all? or ….do they somehow believe that no one really cares about this update?

Zemus101 – Add me to either compare trophies now, or in the future for those that didn’t get the update D:

  • I think they care, but you know with just the fanbase for the blog they have here, they know they have a pretty good item.

  • well if you guys dont want to wait look…. look up the 2.4 update someone has it up and try your luck :)

(JP! DO NOT ATTEMPT!! It works for mostly people and hardly any people in forums have the brick problem…. Plus if you are really unlucky DO NOT DO IT!)

  • i to would like to know when this update will be ready again, also i would like to know if you are releasing a list of games that you are able to earn trophys for. I would like to say Why are some of you guys hatein on sony it has provided you with a system that has offered many hours of fun to all of you so i dont understand the hate and besides it could be worse you could own one of those things that get 3 red lights and die.

  • But i doubt there is anything wrong with the update and Sony might just come out and say those people have downloaded the file wrong, downloaded and got errors making corrupted files get on the HDD, have abused/misused their ps3’s, or they got no clue what is the problem.

But i am not sure but it seems like a HDD problem to me and if you are the type f person how switch off your ps3 or shut it off while the HDD light is on you might have kinda messed up the HDD and that may cause some problems you guys are getting.

So Sony please come out and tell us something.. anything… i love my in-game XMB and i would like others to… and i would like to see people start complaining about being ungrateful to you guys.

Who needs to view pictures during a game, needs to adjust display while playing, custom soundtracks other than in replays i wouldn’t use it but sony did their best in not getting sued, in-game internet browser wasn’t people on the net saying that consoles didnt need to have an internet browser not that we got a in-game XMB everyone not like it, or having all other options available (other than the ones promised you can be pissed for that) you want what is not possible if everything could be offered in-game that would take some real memory or serious casheing on the HDD and these thing are not being done on other platforms other than the PC.

Honestly people should only be angry for not including features they said they would. And don’t say anything about in-game music because i am tired of telling people MICROSOFT PATENTED IT LOOK IT UP!!!!

I dont want to sound mean in this post at all i am sorry is i offended any of you.. i am really sorry

  • Even though I was lucky enough to get the update with no problems I hope it gets fixed soon so that everyone can enjoy it. It certainly is the best update so far, even with these issues. I hope those with PS3 that had issues get fixed fast and at no cost to them.

Now we just need more games with trophy support and it sucks that it will most likely be PSN titles. Now if only Sony would get their butt in gears with those PSN cards and stop with the “they are on their way” and just get them out.
