As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.
We’ll provide further information as necessary here on the Blog.

I fell you shogun34. They need to update us on the status. But I don’t think we’ll be hearing anything until Monday at the earliest. Being that it’s 4th of July weekend they are probably all at home, barbecuing and drinking.
I think we’ll all have to wait til Tuesday for a 2.41 or a re-release of 2.40.
where is the firmware? >:(
@1396
What I’m saying is, if your problem is related to 2.40 it will be fixed by reformattng the hard drive b/c 2.40 effected software and not hardware. If reformatting the HDD does not fix it, then it is not related to 2.40. This is not the RROD where the hardware becomes completely useless. Just a software bug, that will be ironed out in a few days.
it’s just funny. they hype this update up like crazy the day before it comes out, then there’s a problem, they yank it and don’t say anything else about it. I mean, I don’t expect an update every hour but I mean let us know SOMETHING. I’m not impatient, I just want some honest answers.
Well said shogun.
I am not expecting this update to be back up before Tuesday but it would be nice of them to update us on their progress or lack of progress.
Why dont you guys at sony put the update 2.4 back up for all the people who didnt get a chance to download it because they were working or doing something that prevented them from being able to download the update.
@1442
LOL, I know, 500 people are pissed because their system is missed up and 500 more WANT their system messed up. lolollll

“Ugh. Trying to get to messages now is a pain. There’s no way I should have to press Triangle and browse for the message list to see my messages. That’s way too much. It should, in the very least, be available from the profile that’s taken its place.”
I really like 2.40 but I agree about this. I went to answer a message so i clicked on the user thinking that would default to messages since there was a pending message but it didn’t. It took me a minute to figure out that I had to use the triangle button to read the messages.
Let’s face it…the programmers and everyone else went home for the holiday weekend. It’s not like they don’t deserve to, either. There will most likely be no update until Monday morning
There are tons of things more important than waiting by a computer hoping to get an update about the firmware. Everyone should just relax and eat some watermelon. They are all enjoying the holiday with their families, you all should do the same. :-) I know I am…fireworks and whiskey ftw.
Sony, this is pathetic. Get on the ball.
Wow, that’s a great idea! Let’s sit around eating watermelon and swiggin whiskey and we’ll just figure this all out on Monday!!! BRILLIANT!
– remove “Manage Accounts” from PSN Menu because you can do it from the triangle menu in contact list. Change PSN menu to “Playstation Store” with [subdirectories] (if you will) “Browse Store” and “View Cart”. Also, unpurchased cart item should save upon cart exit. Then on a PS3 with no user accounts (newly purchased system) in the create user “wizard” add the ability to make a PSN accnt. (if no internet connection exists then users can select the option to create PSN accnt. from the triangle menu with active user selected in “Users” menu.)
– make “Shutdown” a button IN the menu rather than the subdirectory OF a menu (if you get what I mean :S)
– remove chatroom completely, initiate chat inside the “friends” menu, this idea seems more logical when the cross game chat comes out, and since it’s only temporary until the release of home… (right?)
– hide/toggle clock to prevent burn-in (excellent idea)
– video playlists
– XMB during BD playback
– now that system sounds are introduced, a system sounds volume control which could also control the start-up sound (or not, whatever)
– volume control overlay for games (much like the one accessible during video playback), or a simple volume control menu located within the black/white “Hold PS Button” menu.
– access message list via button under gamercard
– a method for disabling in-game XMB
– hard disk/usb/media card defragger
– integrate custom avatars (what about gravatar?)

1458…my point was, everyone who can help you is more likely than not not gonna worry about it until Monday, when they go back to work. So why should you waste a perfectly good holiday weekend sitting here refreshing the blog constantly?
Life is more than just video games. Try it sometime…it looks better than even 1080p! ;-)
My point is even if they did go home for vacation, how hard is it to post it? Tell us we won’t get till Monday, that’s all I’m sayin. As for enjoyin my holiday weekend, that’s exactly what I’m doin. I work outside 6 days a week so I enjoy a little INSIDE time as well……….freak.
yeah this is crazy.I’m an achievement addict on my 360.The deciding factor in which games i buy for what system is online and achievements and 360 wins hands down everytime. Now i love my ps3 and mgs4 and all but it collects more dust than it should and that is why.I will definatly be trophy hunting after this is all said and done but it would be really nice for the suits at sony to tell us something.THEIR mistakes they won’t even respond to.Doesn’t make me too comfortable at all.

I just updated a 3rd PS3 with FW 2.4: works super. The update installer got messed up when people downloaded it directly on their PS3. I update my PS3 always with a USB-stick…
so by using the usb method do u still stand a chance of getting the problems?
firmware! firmware! firmware!
:(
Erm… this is a “worldwide” problem, so not only the Americans are responsible for this, but the entire SCE corporation, … right?
Ey my avatar is on!! :-D
@1463 I installed straight off my ps3 no problems… so its not that
ok i just noticed another small glitch when i switched my PS3 on and logged in some of my friends were missing about half i had to restart the system B4 they came back.
Right little mess this is!!

I don’t think that Sony even understands for themselves what is going on with the update. Maybe that’s why they’re not responding. Microsoft ain’t a saint either. Where there are people, mistakes are being made. For me no mistake at all, for others a disaster.
firmware please!!!!
nice… at least my avatar is on too…
:)
Has there been any word on how long this will take? I believe Sony is doing the right thing. I have always been a Sony fan!
i don know who started this crazy notion of Microsoft owning a patent on in game music buts its not true! Sony can make it so all games can be used with in game music! but i don’t know why they don’t! maybe there too lazy!
I can’t believe all the people that are asking for 2.4 when it is still floating around all of the net. I just installed it on my ps3 (60gb) and everything went smooth..really smooth. I would always suggest downloading the update file 1st then installing it….less hastle with disconnects.
Great update SONY!!!!
Not really Sony that decides about in game music…it’s the developers.
Sony can say they want it, but I read a blog (may have been Fanboy or Joystick, can’t remember now) that stated some developers have alreay stated they will not provide trophies or in game music to older games…they’ve got new projects and games they’re working on currently and the blog said that the newer games should have them…not everyone, but whichever the developers decide to support these features.
Also read that Uncharted should be coming up with trophies soon.
Take a look at PSXExtreme.com…they have an article about trophies and developers.
“Developers Vow: Trophies Are Coming
As you all know, firmware update 2.40 is finally here, and it contains the long-awaited in-game XMB and Trophy support. However, many users are a little miffed at the idea that Trophies aren’t retroactive, which means they’d have to replay any games they’ve already completed to nab those Trophies. Furthermore, we don’t have a giant list of games coming out in the near future that will definitely support Trophies, although you can expect that all first-party games will.
However, developers are already starting to pledge their loyalty to the Trophy system, and we can expect many games, both old and new, to feature the option. It goes well beyond Super Stardust HD (the first game to allow Trophies); according to MCVUK, developers Criterion and Naughty dog have tossed their hat into the ring. They say that their biggest titles – Burnout Paradise and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, respectively – will soon get Trophies, and of course, this means future projects from these guys should also boast the support. There was a nasty rumor going around that only first-party titles would give us the Trophy option, but clearly, that isn’t the case. Now that the capability is officially here, more developers are ready and willing to give PS3 users the equivalent of the Achievements for the Xbox 360 versions of next-gen games.
In addition, we can expect those same developers to start taking advantage of the in-game XMB. Obviously, as it hasn’t been released until today, game makers haven’t had any call to implement an in-game XMB into the development process for any given title. But all that has changed. New customization options are fun for all!”
@ 1473 nas…
Micro does have a patent. I posted the info on page 13 of this blog (if its still there)
if its not and you really want to read them i can post the link again (and before you say its a fake link, its directly form the US patent office website)
where can i find 2.40 on the web?
You should implement Voice Chat as part of in-game XMB now especially since you’re making us wait even longer for 2.4.
I think sony are doing their best, they took the update for our own protection. I installed 2.40 altho i didnt brick my ps3 (i downloaded via pc and used usb) there are a few problems, like internet browser not working all the time, psn dropping connection.
As all this was working before 2.40 im sure sony have noticed this and they took the update down to safeguard the people that hadnt installed it. Which is a good idea, im sure next week (maybe monday) we will have a revised 2.40 named 2.4.1 or something. You have to realise that they dont want more people breaking their systems with 2.40 so dont moan theyve taken it offline when they are trying to save your system.
@jgmunday….I totally agree with you….these guys complaining they can’t get 2.40 (if Sony left it up and their system died…they’d be on this blog b**ching again.
Give it some time and I’m sure you’ll get it.
I know people are upset as some have the update and are happy, but better safe than sorry right ?
I got it just after midnight July 2 and really like the features, however, many aren’t happy with that also downloaded it.
I don’t think you can please 100 % of any crowd now a days.
I give Sony a pat on the back for this one as I used to program and know what these guys must be going through to get this back up.
Also, many upgrades work great in house and then when you let the users take them….anything can happen. Sony is just playing it safe for now and it will be here soon enough.
Sony COULD YOU PLEASE AT LEAST TELL US SOMETHING…rather than us sitting here and waiting, don’t give us the silent treatment at least tell us when we can see it back up I don’t care if I have to wait till Monday at least tell us please…
Not sure if anyone else has had this issue but i’ve had problems with my headset. Pretty sure it’s since I updated to 2.40 but can’t be certain.
Basically cuts out during a game, it shows as being active and connected but the mic refuses to work. When I go back to the XMB it still no longer works and is connected.
I have to hard reset the PS3, go back into audio device config and the mic is working perfectly.
Not sure whether it’s this update or Battlefield Bad Company causing it though. Not like I can downgrade firmware to double check neither.
Oh, and it’s a Sony Ericsson PV-703 Headset.
I have downloaded 2.40, it works but my game lock up a lot now and i have to reset my ps3, i also have lots of problems with my friends list, it say some of them are on line when they aren’t and sometimes the avitars aren’t displayed…..ITS BUGGED UP BIG TIME.
I was hoping they would’ve fixed this update my the long weekend so other dev’s can patch their games but it looks like it’s nit happening.
The update worked good on my ps3 maybe bcause I have 250 gig hd in my 60 gig console. Anyone know if pixel junk monsters is getting trophies?
Sony it has been 2 days after the pull of the firmware, you could at least give us a heads up……I don’t mind waiting I just like to be informed we deserve at least that…
An update just to give us in game messaging, trophy achievements and in game music (if the game is patched) over 1 year after the console was launched,,,the update is bugged up as well! Xbox360 has had all this and more from day one, Sony need to sort it out as well as our (europe) playstation store that has hardly any content compaired with the USA and Japan.
Sony it is Friday…..we all know you all go home on the weekends, due to know blog updates over the weekend. So please don’t leave today without informing us with something I don;t wanna wonder all weekend whats going to happen, something please.
*due to no blog updates*
I am a europe user too, yes we need more content. We need qore too if possible, wish we got the same stuff as us/japan stores as well.
Also sony are doing their best to fix 2.40, let them do it, they just dont want to screw up your systems by re-releasing the bugged ones. I am sure sony are doing all they can to iron out the bugs, we all have to wait, including us already on 2.40 as we are experiencing minor bugs too (well i am and so are a few other) so when they fix the 2.40 update, the rest of us on 2.40 already will update to the new bug free one.
Remember sony are fixing it for us, not trying to annoy us, they just want our ps3’s to run perfectly.
And we understand this…….I just think we should get an update on the situation… don’t you think??? at least after 2 days?
Wow, ecummings 1. Are you that bitter that the first place you need to do is make a johnson joke? How old are you…12? Let’s face it…
1) You payed for a system that ports over half of it’s games from a pc.
2) You probably payed for that HD-DVD drive and can’t buy any movies for it when you could have got a PS3 w/ the Blu Ray Player for about the same price. Do the math. You can do math, right?
3) Maybe you’re sick about the fact that a majority of your games are first person shooters.
Look, the bottom line is this: The 2.40 update only effected a few people. Not everybody. You should read a little more before jumping to conclusions. You can read right? Personally, I think that the only reason you are so bitter is that the only little feature that ties you to your Xbox is that you can listen to music during your games. Now that the PS3 is going to have that feature, you don’t feel so excusive anymore. Do everybody a favor and get over it. It’s just a game.
Well yes, but maybe they still dont know all the bugs there, and have nothing to report yet. Hopefully monday there will be a post or something as it is a holiday weekend in the u.s. Happy 4th July to all u u.s peeps.
Why does everyone keep on saying this is going to make or break the PS3? You people just can’t be happy can you? We wanted more games they gave us more games. Now with the install times, well remember the next gen console are really like computers, and well doesn’t a computer with all of its might have to install the game before play? Yes, so stop complaining about that or start complaining to the actual developers for even PC games and tell them to not have install times as well for there PC games.
Also with 2.4 SONY gave us in-game XMB and trophies, which is a better system than the 360’s achievement system, but yet you still complain about this update. Yeah some PS3’s are having trouble with the new update and yeah it sucks big time but have patience and SONY with fix it remember this is a very big update with alot of different coding and so its going to take some time to work out all the bugs.
I to am annoyed with not having all the features in the XMB work, like music and the trophies as well. But remember theres to sides of the equation the console side and the game side. The music won’t work because the game thinks I am playing my music and the console agrees but now with 2.4 the game thinks that same thing but until the game gets a patch from the developers that tells it to mute its music and let the console plays its music we won’t be able to play our own music. Even the 360 is the same way, but all the games are told to mute it’s music when the console wants to play its own.
So when it comes down to complaining, complain to the developers to hurry with there patches! Same thing with trophies and how these developers are being lazy and not adding them to there game that are already out.
insanity , i have 2.4 but havnt seen any bugs but the missing images in the PS Store. and i cant DL anything out of my list. idk why :-(
I’m not really upset about the 2.40 firmware update having problems or it being taken down, it’s more about Sony not updating gamers about whats going on. I understand that it is the long weekend and that they will more then likely not be back to work until Monday, but the firmware was taken offline on Thursday. It would have been nice for Sony to actually let people know what the status of the update was before they went M.I.A for the long weekend. Even if the news about getting it back up was not positive, it would still at least be news and still give people an idea of whats going on. Being completely left in the dark like we have been is poor customer sevice on Sonys part.
