Firmware v2.40 FAQ

1,729 0

Hi again! It’s great to see the positive reaction to the unveiling of system software update v2.40. We can’t wait for you to finally go hands-on with XMB access in-game and the Trophy system – and it’s less than 2 days away. Not surprisingly, a number of you have posed questions both here and on other forums. Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Will voice-messaging/private chat be featured in 2.40 as well? If not, can we expect to see this feature added in the future?

We are evaluating the opportunity to offer voice chat, but for this update, we wanted to focus on text messaging as the key priority for communications that our users have asked for.

Can you use the web browser in game?

No, you must exit the game before browsing the internet.

Will In-Game XMB come up during playback of PS2 games, Blu-Ray discs, and DVDs?

The XMB is an exclusive feature for PS3 game titles. Accessing the XMB during gameplay was the top request from our users, which we focused on for this update. However, we continually engage PS3 owners for feedback and will evaluate the opportunity to offer XMB access during movie playback in the future.

Can we go to the display settings and change anything there in-game (resolution, input, etc)?

No, you must exit the game before changing these settings.

Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output?

Yes, sound output changes are supported.

Will we be able to access the PLAYSTATION Store while in-game?

No, but you can view your downloads in progress.

Will we be able to stream music (either via media server or USB drive) for custom soundtracks or is it relegated to music stored on the HDD?

Currently only music stored on the HDD is accessible in games that support this feature. We’d also like to reiterate that Firmware v2.40 merely enables custom soundtracks. It’s up to developers to include this feature in upcoming games (or to patch existing ones).

Does 2.4 enable cross game invites? Will it down the line?

No, cross-game invites are not available in this system software update. We are evaluating opportunities to expand on the new features delivered in 2.40.

Will trophies be mandatory for all games release here on out?

We are working with developers to ensure that Trophies are supported across the board in the future.

Where is each player’s trophy stat info held? I am going to upgrade my hard drive and I don’t know if the trophies will still be on my account if I earn some and then get a new hard drive.

Trophies will be attached to users’ PSN ID. Trophy data needs to be synchronized to the online account on PSN to be transferred to the new PS3 system.

Will the patch automatically allocate unlocked trophies according to your saved files or would you have to do it again?

    No, Trophies aren’t retroactive.

Can we view PSN profiles/Trophies from a PC using a Web browser? Will there be an API for web developers to access the PSN data, so online profiles can be created?

We’re evaluating these opportunities to expand where Trophies can be experienced.

Can you only compare trophies with friends that are online?

As long as a friend has a PSN account, you can compare trophies with them regardless of their online status.

Is there a limit to how many trophies the devs can put set by Sony?

There’s not a limit on number of trophies, but there’s a value assigned to each trophy. Developers must balance out the trophies that are available to stay within an overall value based on whether the game is considered large-scope or small-scope. Essentially, a user that has unlocked every trophy in one game would have the same level as a user that unlocked every trophy in another title, all titles (depending on scope) have the same overall impact on a users’ level.

Will new games have a cool little icon on the back saying “trophy compatible?”

We’re currently working on how Trophy support will be messaged to the consumer on our software packaging.

When you get a trophy, does it make a noise?

Currently, no. How quickly things can change – there *will* be a sound effect when you unlock a Trophy.

    What is Eric’s favorite cheese?

    Mozzarella

Once again, we will continue to evaluate opportunities to enhance the PLAYSTATION 3’s system software throughout the console’s life cycle. Consumer feedback has contributed greatly to the contents of Firmware v2.40, and continues to be appreciated. Don’t forget, this Firmware will be available for download on July 2nd.

  • Update looks good. May definitely have to mute a few more people if they play music due to the update. Annoying, yes, but managable.

Now, if we had cross game chat, or out of game chat, I guess a few more people will be muted. Remember, people, Online Etiquette. If you are in a team based game and you have certain objectives to complete for the team, tone down your music when asked and cut the chatter or you will be muted.

Otherwise, I am very enthusiastic about the update. Looking foreward to more!

  • @688 y

don’t you have a 360? as soon as private chats are enabled you are muted for the ingame chat. and why do you think you hear music because of custom soundtracks? if your headset is any good it will cancel the surrounding noise.

  • A really good update! A great starting point to expand in the future.

I hope the in-game XMB is easily activated in DVD/Blu-ray playback and that the technical limitations have been overcome to activate it in game.

Can’t wait to download it and see what developers come up with for the trophy system :-)

PS: personally not a fan of my own music playing in game, but good to see that you’ve pleased the majority of PS3 gamers.

  • that pretty much sums it up what most people are thinking about 2.40 right now:

    videogaming247.com/2008/07/01/firmware-240-is-playstation-3-finally-the-finished-product/

  • What I would really like to have, is the possibility to send gamesound and mic to a stereo headset.
This way I would be able to play and chat without disturbing the family too much :)

  • there are third party products that make this possible!

  • Thanks for listening to suggestions and concerns of ps3 fans!!

Please see this thread, some other (feasible) features we’d love to see.

  • flashplayer updates would be great. maybe a new internet browser. can’t you ask mozilla to do a PS3 version of firefox?

  • Eric & Jeff = EPIC WIN!

  • I have a queston for jeff

will the patch for super stardust be out as soon as i have downloaded 2.40 or will it hit my ps3 later in the day ?

    nice update by the way

  • NO WAY. Everything is perfect, but no voice-chat?! It’d be used a lot more than text messaging.
“GET THAT GUY AROUND THE CORNER!!.. oh wait.. *types message – gets killed*”

I don’t understand this huge update only increases the version number by 0.04th. There are such a lot of changes.

But I’m really missing the voicechat. Though during your tour of the in-game XMB, I DID see a voice-chat logo. Surely this would require you to go out of the game, right?

  • After all having PS3 as an open console isn’t very good after all, well in some areas. Trophies should be mandatory in all games, custom music and pausing games when accessing the In-game XMB mandatory. Come on its all possible, maybe Sony should buy a thousand of xbox 360 consoles and let all their staff check it out and see it for themselves. Honestly, don’t you agree?

Sony I think its better to act sooner rather than later, don’t you reckon?
    Lol enough of my talking!!!

  • Does 2.4 enable cross game invites? Will it down the line?

No, cross-game invites are not available in this system software update. We are evaluating opportunities to expand on the new features delivered in 2.40.

I thing this is a very important feature to be implement for a better online experience ever on ps3. really important to be always “on” with your friends.

    regards
    vanace

  • @prodygeen

The Sony firmware numbers have nothing to do with features. As far as I’m aware, a change this big on most other systems would be v3.00, but Sony don’t work that way on PS3 or PSP

  • @PirateThom

Is that good or bad? lol

  • TOMORROWWWWW!!!
    This update is so usefull!!!!!!!

  • In your next FAQ please answer questions properly.

Ideally with a reason why something that majority of people wanted has not been included.

If you want to get ahead of the competition give your user base what they want. Some very good comments have been made on this blog…. a vast amount gets ignored though.

  • Its a bit off topic…but i was looking at the Trophies website thing, and Littlebigplanet was supported, but only on the PSN game list!?!

Is it only coming out on PSN, or will it be on Blu-ray too?

    Thanks :)

  • PLEASE cross-game invites
THIS IS REALLY WHAT I WAS WAITING FOR.

    THANKS

  • It will be interesting once more games support these features. A long waited feature for us PS3 owners.

  • Lets all just hope their server doesnt crash with everyone updating all at the same time

  • Sony in all honesty, you have sought of screwed up the 2.40 version firmware.

  • Question on this feature.

“Will it be possible to change in-game the sound output?

Yes, sound output changes are supported.”

Is it feasible to hope that a future addition will be instead of allowing this we can output to both the Optical Output and the Component as we were able to on the PS2 and most standard DVD players. thus meaning if i want to use my amp i merely turn it on rather than edit a setting?

  • I’m probably 15 pages too late for this to really get read, but I just want to say thanks for the update/faq, and I’m looking forward to trophies. I was always into achievements. I even attempted those damn 100 hour badges in BF2, just because.

In regards to in-game music, I think it will be kind of the norm, even if it is an option. Gamers won’t like that it’s not supported, so that will cause publishers lost sales.

Anyhow, I think a lot of people are being upset over nothing. The PSN is NOT XBL, just as the PS3 is NOT the 360. Stop trying to make one the other. Sure, it’d be nice to have some of the features, like trophies and in game messaging. It’s one of those necessary things, but some of the other things people are asking for is to basically make the PS3 a 360 clone. At that point just buy a 360 and paint it glossy black, and maybe add some chrome. With the number of multiplatform games this gen, you cannot have 2 consoles with almost identical features. Sure the PS3 has Bluray, but please visit Yahoo! Answers sometimes and realize how many people thing they need to replace all of their DVDs. They’ll think the 360 is cheaper, plus they can still keep their DVDs.

Basically, keep the PSN competitive, but keep it different enough to distinguish the service as uniquely Sony’s.

    Be genetically different!

  • I am not sure if this has been asked or confirmed. But I would really like Sony to expand the possibilities when organizing/sorting files/movies/games on the PS3. Currently I can only sort them in folders after format and list them after currently to last played game… What I would like to do is to have an own map for demos, as I think it is annoying to have to use time to search for my full games, when I have so many demos. If this could be worked out that would be perfect. Also, naming folders and moving games/movies/files would also be excellent. It doesn’t sound like an hard feature to include, so please, do it.

    Best Regards,

    Mr.Petter

  • @ 711- I Totally agree..

  • Wow at 712 comments so far…

Anyway — Do we have reason yet for why SONY refuses to force developers to implement custom soundtracks and Trophies(for future releases)… because i hope people don’t need to spell it out but standardizing these features is what people want – not having in-game soundtracks – but having 0 games support it…

  • THERE WILL BE A SOUND-EFFECT WHEN AWARDED TROPHIES!

Thanks Eric for making a change so late in the day. Its a little thing, but a brilliant thing to also hear an audio reward for our achievements.

What will it be? A simple tune (like intel tune) with a fanfare and clapping would be good?!

  • please cross-game invites please

    thank you & best regards

    vanace

  • @700 of course they do.

    0.0X for bugfixes
0.X0 for a few new features
    X.00 for major updates

  • Can you also release a feature in the XMB that “kills my Xbox 360”. It should ask you whether you want to fry your Xbox 360 or cause it to malfunctioned. I only ask because I’m really mad that my refurbished 360 is always failing me and I always have to send it in to get another refurbished 360.

I have an Xbox 360 and a PS3 on a 8 outlet surgearrest protector and it would be killer if my PS3 can kill my 360 instead of it redringing itself. That way I wouldn’t have to anticipate my 360 to crap out. Instead I ‘ll just kill it with my PS3 whenever I’m pissed off at Microsoft.

  • Hey Jeff,

I just itching to know, is that OPM UK magazine telling the truth about 70% of already released games are going to be updated to include trophy support

  • So when you say… Custom Soundtracks are now enabled for developers to allow with a patch.. High Velocity Bowling and Pain … were not enabled… lol

Someone isn’t thinking over there. So from now on only select games will support custom tracks… what a joke.

  • please cross-game invites

thats what I was waiting for.

    thank you & best regards

    vanace

  • I agree, in game voice chat should be put into the game. Dont get me wrong I love the update. But with the cell chip and what it can do, I hope allot more features will be coming up. You guys should be blowing the competition out the water with whats under the hood in the PS3. Specially when it comes to features like in game/cross game voice chat.

Great start with this update though.

  • Cool so we do get a sound for the trophies. Will it be possible to place your own sound in the future?

Also will these trophies have a 3d verion when Home is released?

  • Im sorry but is this is a joke. why cant they impliment custom in game music across all games i mean it wouldnt be that hard to get around this apparant “patent” i read a comment a couple of pages ago about when you use custom music on the pc using winamp or something like that why cant sony do that have a seperate media player or something, dont flame me but seriously. also you suck so much sony i mean after like what page 4 you stop replying… it really isnt what i call, “living”.

p.s if you bother to reply dont give me some [DELETED] like “its becuase of hardware differences” or some [DELETED] like that. its not fair ok it seriously isnt.

  • Is there anyway Warhawk will be considered to be one of the only games where your stats will be put into trophies right away? I mean Warhawk is just all stats, isn’t it?

  • 1HR 25 minutes to go before turned 2nd July in Australia…………2.40……

  • Is it possible to release a firmware which has power saving functions? The console’s power consumption isn’t lower when browsing or just downloading or watching movies than playing games, so the fan kicking in after 10 minutes even if I’m downloading.

    Thanks.

  • @chansike

I dont think it comes out at that time..

Firmwares always release at 12 am eastern time for some reason.

    @everyone

Microsoft is the one to blame for in game music, Microsoft is the one to blame for cheap ports, microsoft is the one to blame for everything.

Microsoft are greedy F’ers, that will waste billions to take down the playstation brand, its the only reason why nintendo is winning.

  • Yer chanskie i’m waiting as well lol 1hr 10 mins in Australia

  • @chanskie — lol mate we are the exception here… we will probably get the update July 3rd… which conveniently just happens to be 2nd July for the majority of the world…

Anyway — does anyone know when PAIN is getting patched to add trophy support… i’ve been thinking of getting PAIN and will once it gets Trophy support (custom soundtracks would be nice too if the developers are in a giving mood)

  • I used to own a 360 and was never into the whole “Achievements” thing, but now that it’s coming to my favorite console, I might really get into it. Can’t wait !!!

  • Will it be possible to access the XMB when playing PS1 Games, like Final Fantasy VII?
    PLEASE :D

  • @ 658 HookedOnTronics
Dont say anything against Eric , he is charge of fixing the mistakes of SCEI.

Fersis member of ‘Jeff,Noel,Eric and the cool SCEA guys and gals’ Defence Force

  • :-(
I thought all i need to do is wait when Japan turn 12am 2nd July….no???
And that is only 1 hr behind us in Australia…..i better have a couple more coffee and stay up whole night staring at my MGS4 theme on my PS3……..c’mon man….my day off tomorrow…only 1 day this week…….give me more….

  • @joel… Sure Microsoft hurt SONY — but Microsoft have been delivering lately. As such id say SONY dug their own grave with PS3’s price/limits… SONY should of increased the RAM to 256mb(CPU)/512mb(VIDEO).

Also they should of been less arrogant towards 3rd parties in 2005 when everyone expected them to win easily…

Anyway i hope that PS3 is a learning experience for SONY — i hope that they design PS4 to be extremely powerful, but also reasonably price. IF SONY uses a similar design to the CELL for the CPU, 8x CPU RAM, 16x VIDEO RAM, new generation GPU(based off Nivida 2010/11 cards) and a new controller design( but make DS3/ Sixaxis work on PS4) then they should be able to achieve a $400 price out of the box which should also result in them taking minimal losses / profiting … (Assuming PS4 launches in 2012… thus the RAM is cheaper – and the CPU should cost much to make if its like a CELL chip with 16 core @ 6.4 Ghz…)

  • Jeff Rubestein,

So once I upgrade to fw2.4, if I pop in Burnout or uncharted can I just replay it and unlock trophies or no?

    Thanks in advance

p.s. I know you keep saying patches, but I was under teh impression alot of games already supported trophies.

  • Wow reading that last half a dozen pages or so, I am soo incredibly annoyed by ‘gamesblow’. And obviously I am not alone, he constantly is pulling things out of his ass and claiming them to be fact, only yo be proven wrong a few days later… He constantly says this FW won’t even be worth downloading! WOW.

Listen people, we asked for in-game XMB, did we not? What did we MAINLY ask for? Friends access in-game, and that is what they delivered. Next to that? Music in-game, and they have delivered that as well. I would not be surprised if almost every game from here on out include it, because it is incredibly easy for them now, to incorporate it. So now it doesn’t matter? They delivered on what we want and so much more. New user profiles, did we ask for that? No. Trophies, did we ask for that or expect them to come anytime soon? No. And then there is stuff like the sate and time in the corner, or the google search. This update is going to be the groundwork for future games. Any games that want to have more value, can get easily patched. But this feature is mainly for future titles. And that being said, it is an incredible feature, and a far better take on the concept of achievements.

What are people complaining about? Not being able to look at a picture while in-game? Honestly?? Or not being able to get on the internet browser in-game? Who really NEEDS that? Next up is going to be cross game invites, and in-game chat.

But honestly no one should really be complaining, if Sony just came out with in-game XMB alone, people would be happy, but they delivered way more.
