A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

I just thought of something,will all the today Ps3 games will support the trophies unlock or some of them???My mom brought this up this morning,she also play my PS3 hehe.
2.4 firmware might not be live this month. July is looking more likely.
I don’t care how long shortly is. What makes sony different to other particular console manufacturers (mentioning no names) is they take their time and make someting that works.

Didn’t mean to suggest that you were ignorant.
As far as you feeling that you didn’t need ‘social features’ in the past to have fun, and you still don’t; well that is your opinion and you are entitled to it. It is apparent that a lot of people feel differently. It is also evident that the gaming trend is unquestionably moving toward the opposite of what you feel.
That being said, I totally respect your opinion (of social features neccessity), I feel that it is likely the minority, nonetheless.
However, I do agree with you and am tired of reading posts that apparently have no research or very little thought behind them, suffice to ‘whine about it.’

Telling us that a minor update will be followed shortly after by a major one is, I think, a good policy for you guys to follow (as you did with this one). I think that probably when minor updates like 2.17 were released a while after the previous major update, many of us felt letdown since we didn’t know that 2.20 was just around the corner. So, whenever you guys have less than stellar news to bring us (or if it just appears that way), I’d be nice to have some reassurance, especially so we don’t all have to listen to people whining about a certain feature not being there yet.
Oh, and to all of you who were saying that soon/shortly equaled many months-a year in Sony language, Eric said 2.36 was coming soon and that came in a matter of hours.
Wow 2.40! I dont care!! Where the hell is home?? You know that cool thing you guys said would come out in Q4 of 2007? Oh thats right it got pushed back like 3 times. Hurry my PS3 is getting dusty!

Note that he never states that 2.40 is actually LAUNCHING “soon”, or “shortly” (as he said about 2.36). He only says that MORE DETAILS about the features of 2.40 will be provided “soon/shortly”
So, based on those carefully placed words and the fact that 2.36 just launched yesterday, I’d say 2.40 is at least a few weeks out. Hope I’m wrong, but….

One question that I have, however, is how Trophies will be viewable without Home. I saw some “leaked” videos on the web that seemed to indicate that it would be located on the XMB in another file, any chance you could confirm this?
Stop playing with us and release 2.4. It’s totally nonsense to have to quit the games we’re currently playing just to answer a friend’s message. It’s also nonsense not being able to use custom soundtracks on our gameS, something that *other* consoles have since their older model – which was released almost 6 years ago!
Just stop fooling us and release it!
By the way: where is HOME? Will you keep fooling us forever?

I’m pretty sure we’re getting 2-D trophies with the actual 3-D versions to be released with Home. Don’t quote me on this, but it’s what’s happening from what I understand.

That’s the way it will be… this trophies will be in the xmb and your profiles. To hit triangle and view the profile and you can see the trophies. Maybe to see others trophies in the profile will come later but will come. Home Trophy Room is just a fancy way to vie the trophies. Remember that Home is optional from what they said, just like F@H.

Resident Evil 5 is said to now be an xbox 360 exclusive because Sony thinks consumers will stay loyal even with no games. I think it’s time Sony reached into its pocket and started buying exclusives. Microsoft is doing it, why not do the same? this is a joke! I didn’t buy the ps3 to play 10 min PSN games or casual niche games like Singstar or buzz or Guitarhero.
I bought it to play a great staple of games that I thought Sony felt was important to obtain for their consumer. You can add Xmb all you want Sony; fact is you don’t have anything worth a damn to use it with. Another huge blow to Sony and all they’re doing is sitting back cutting in house exclusives and forwarding those funds over to Craptastic Singstar and Buzz projects.

Why do we keep geting STABILITY update’s? isn’t this like the 3rd one or some thing. (one after another). Why can’t it wait untill 2.40? And what is so unstabil about PS3 Game’s make’s no since to me what so ever. Just building up hype about what?

Ive read somewhere (maybe on this blog) that Soul Calibur III (on the 80 GB PS3) is working fine now and another game that i cannot remember.
Are only New games going to support “Trophies”? or will developers revisit older titles in order to add replayability ?
Been watching this thread all day, its quite amazing to see how many people voice there opinion on the IGXMB, it really is a big deal.
PS3 for me is the best bit of Home Cinema / Games system kit i have bought in years…..never thought an all in one system would work for me but this is awesome.

@everyone asking about trophies
According to rumors, currently 70% of the games for the PS3 support that feature, Resistance 1 is not one of them.
Also, we are waiting its been far more than shortly.
@gamesblow Capcom has come out and said that rumor is false. Resident Evil 5 is still slated for both systems.
Hey Jeff just wondering now that Trophy support is coming will there be an option to login multiple PSN accounts on one machine. An example would be: If my friends come over and play Warhawk with me at my house on my PS3 will the trophys/achievements be awarded to them or will I receive a trophy for thier achievments in the game because they are logged in as my guest account? It would be cool if they could login to thier PSN account and rack up thier own achievements/ trophys. Thanks.

Finally an update that’s will put us on par with those bastards 360 owners. Thanks Sony it took awhile but you finally delivering what we all want most to make our online gaming better. Now if we can just get HOME and an internet browser that we can actually surf the net with then all will be peachy.

Will be so nice to listen to my harddrive’s playlist instead of the usual crappy in game music. Then with home PS3 will definitely be the ultimate online gaming & media player console. But hey a flash player browser update would be nice Sony since the one it has is outdated & worthless.

Even though we do get in-game XMB, we’re still not sure what it really does. For all we know, the only thing we might get to do is send messages to our friends. Then what wait for another update to play our own music? Then wait for another update to be able to use the web browser during games? Just a theory hope that I’m wrong. :(
All I want, is to be able to have voice chat work for every online game, jeebus its almost 2 years and this simple feature cannot work across the board for all games.
MGO the online portion of a flagship title has the worst voice chat implementation.
So(mone)ny needs to standardize these simple things

i think it does’nt contain in-game music as the other company has patented said feature but i think games will get updated to allow this function!!

@546 you cant patent in game music, its too abstract. In game music was around long before the xbox. Its just multitasking.
Pretty sure 2.36 is little more than a couple of minor tweaks, and an intentional, but subtle hint that 2.40 is still at least a few weeks out..
I think most people would calm down, if we got some solid details so we can finally defend ourselves about ingame messaging from rabid owners of “other” systems…
Please sony, throw us a bone, give us some juicy details, and let the Internet meltdown commence….
