MGS4/MGO Beta – Questions Answered!

477 1

Hi all! Our Metal Gear posts are attracting so much attention that we’re popping back in ahead of schedule to answer some of your questions off the regular Metal Gear Mondays schedule.

To start, we have been getting reports that some of you are receiving partial digit UPVC’s Metal Gear Online Beta on the “Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2″ DVD inserts. We are aware of this issue and are working hard to remedy. If you’ve been affected by this issue, please contact us at http://www.konami-data.com/support/. Please be sure to include your partial code, and any other pertinent details (like a return email address, etc). We thank you for your patience.

Second, as some of you may have noticed, the download of the MGO Beta client is now available. Carefully following the instructions you received with your UPVC, you can go grab it. Once it’s downloaded and installed, and you hit the main menu, you’ll notice to proceed you need to sign in your PSN account. Once you’ve done that, you’ll see that there is an update that must be downloaded and installed. From there, the next menu is where you can sign up for your Konami ID/Game ID, which are required to play Metal Gear Online. You can also sign up for a Konami ID/Game ID at http://id.konami.net at any time using a web browser on a PC as well. Once you have signed up for your Konami ID/Game ID, and input it into MGO on your PS3, you can select the option to save the login and password and just login directly in the future without having to input it again.

Following that, until gameplay begins on the 21st, you will just receive an error if you try to sign in to play MGO right now.

As mentioned in the previous posts about Metal Gear Online and Konami ID, the Konami ID/Game ID will be used to offer community and other features with Metal Gear Online, similar to some other popular multiplayer online game web communities, except in this case the web community is directly integrated into the game client which allows for some special functionality. As you use Metal Gear Online, you will see how the PS3 web browser is seamlessly integrated into the experience, and then of course, you can go and access the community when you are away from your PS3 as well, using a web browser on a PC. We’ll reveal more about the community features of MGO at a later date.

Now we’ll just dive directly into some of your questions previous posts:

I_Love_New_York asked: Can we play this game locally once it is downloaded or is it only played through online?

@I Love New York: You must sign in to play Metal Gear Online. There is no local play option.

darkiewonder asked: Any of the Konami folks will be playing in the BETA as well?

@darkiewonder: We sure will!!! We may try to arrange some matches with you all or something like that… Stay tuned!

Sheen asked: Upon downloading the Beta on the 17th, what can the player do? Would I be able to tool around the character creation settings and all that before I play? I’d like to do that beforehand.

@Sheen: Thanks! You can set up a Konami ID/Game ID through the MGO client/PS3, or can do so right now at http://id.konami.net, otherwise character creation and of course gameplay will not be available until the 21st.

bobamuknunbabo asked: When will you take pre-orders for the Gunmetal Grey MGS4 PS3 Bundle? Where would you be able to do so? Konami America?

@bobamuknunbabo, and everyone else who has been asking: We really appreciate your excitement about the gun-metal grey “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots” Limited Edition PLAYSTATION 3 Hardware Bundle. We will be revealing more information about this very soon, please stay tuned!

lawman3092 asked: Is there any mic support in the beta or in the starter pack coming with MGS4?

@lawman3092: Absolutely! Mics are supported by MGO!

Thanks everyone! See you Monday!

  • I am very disappointed in Konami and SONY

  • Delaystation, lol. Another ball dropped. Damn I had off from work today too. I got 3 of my friends from work who only play their 360’s excited for this. And at midnight we logged off of XBOXLive to play this and this happens. Dont know how many second chances Playstation is going to get man.

  • Here in California it’s the morning of the 21st. Wasn’t the beta supposed to open on the 21st? I don’t remember anyone saying it would be open the second it hits the 21st somewhere in the world. Even if it’s delayed a day big deal. Just be patient and get on when it opens. The only real problem I had was the registration process but I think they fixed that.

Remember, this is a beta, not a fininshed game. All the people complaining better stay away from the beta. I bet you’ll get mad when the beta crashes and you lose a game. Beta means it’s being tested. Maybe at the last minute Konami found something they needed to fix.

  • i can’t understand how people can’t get it through their thick skulls that it’s not a demo. even xboxlive had issues this past christmas into early this year and that wasn’t even a beta (it’d been out for so long too!). cod4’s map pack had problems its first couple of days too, and they already knew that game was huge!

  • So Brandon,

Why did Konami use the KonamiID + GameID exclusively instead of linking the KonamiID web features with the PSN ID like other franchises have done? That way the extra benefits of the web can be selected by the user, instead of forced upon everyone (added stats, forum access, etc.) It seems like a waste of time and resources, as well as a less secure outlet for your game ID to be stolen, since the passwords for GameIDs are only numeric!

For the Final release of MGO, are there any thoughts to go to a KonamiID / PSN ID schema or are you ready to see tons of accounts hijacked?

  • I see now Konami has delayed the beta outside of Japan. Maybe have the beta in the US instead? Hasn’t MGS been a bigger game in the US? No big deal though. I guess I’ll just be playing more GT5 Prologue. I have too many great games to play right now anyway to worry if I can play a beta and not enough free time.

  • I think it’s ironic, that Konami seems to be having so much trouble getting an online app to work, considering that they’re partnered with Sony — a company that has a decade of experience connecting tens of thousands of concurrent users in a massive online environment.

Hey Sony! Have the EverQuest team call up the MGO people and show them how it’s done …

  • I UNDERSTAND THIS IS A BETA BUT THIS IS THE GAME THAT SHOWS PS3 TRUE POWER THEIR IS NO ROOM FOR (F-UPS) DONT CARE IF IT IS A TEST

  • I think I will cancel my pre order for this game, since Konami is making this so difficult. We shouldn’t have to do this spacial game id thing for any game, especially for a beta version- that’s why I did the limited time pre order in the first place; that was the special thing we needed to do! Nothing more should be needed. Is this the future of gaming?

  • FOR PEOPLE WITH BOTH PS3 & XBOX360 THIS IS NOTHING. BUT IF YOUR LIKE ME YOU GOT A PS3 AND YOUR ROOM MATE HAS XBOX360 I KNOW YOUR GETTING CLOWNED HARD I FEEL YOUR PAIN

  • “FOR PEOPLE WITH BOTH PS3 & XBOX360 THIS IS NOTHING. BUT IF YOUR LIKE ME YOU GOT A PS3 AND YOUR ROOM MATE HAS XBOX360 I KNOW YOUR GETTING CLOWNED HARD I FEEL YOUR PAIN”

What exactly does that mean? Are you saying you have no PS3 games and the MGO beta delay means you’ll have nothing to play? If that’s true too bad for you. I still have a stack of games I haven’t played. I have GT5 Prologue I just started. I have GTA IV coming soon. I’m a baseball fan so I keep busy most of the time watching baseball games. Maybe you need more things to keep you busy. I just don’t have enough free time to even care.

If anything I really don’t care that much about online gaming. I play some online games but I don’t spend all my free time gaming.

  • DONT GET YOUR PANTIES IN A BUNCH IM JUST TELLING FACTS. I WISH I HAD MORE FREE TIME TO PLAY GAMES BUT I DONT I WORK ALL WEEK LONG I TOOK THE DAY OFF TODAY CAUSE I LOVE THE METAL GEAR SERIES. I HAVE OTHER GAMES TO PLAY I ALSO PAID FOR GTA4 IN FULL AND METAL GEAR SOLID (SO WHAT ARE YOU SAYING? IF I GET CLOWNED BY XBOX360 USERS CAUSE KONAMI CANT GET IT RIGHT AM I WRONG FOR SAYING THAT (I MEAN GET REAL MAN)

  • You took a day off just to play a game? You’re not an adult then. Only kids skip school to play games. Work comes first then the rest. Pfftt taking a day off just to play some games? You won’t get rich that way.

  • And what’s up with the caps lock? Are you blind or something?

  • The only people who are getting clowned are those paying 50 dollars a year for P2P online connection service, as well as not even getting this game. This is “beta testing,” meaning not everything is going to go according to your liking. People are expecting a demo.

  • And since the beta testing is free – it gives you no right to b****. GTA didn’t offer a beta, and to be honest, with Rockstar’s lack of experience, the multiplayer portion of GTA will flop, hard.

  • I TYPE CAPS SO DUMMIES LIKE YOU CAN GET THE POINT. (WORK COMES FIRST IS A OLD SAYING FOR PEOPLE WITH NO MONEY) MY BILLS ARE WELL TAKIN CARE OF LIKE I SAID I WORK ALL WEEK BUDDY WHY DONT YOU AND BRIAN PLAY SIMS AND MARRY EACH OTHER FAGS

  • Well, how ironic of you calling other people dummies, especially when your grammar skills are about as horrible as the Xbox 360’s failure rate. And also, English isn’t even my first language.

And your comment about the Sims, that’s a laugh, why don’t you go sit in a corner and grow the hell up.

  • Now now kid, it’s just a game. You don’t have react excessively. So if you can pay your bills you already satisfied? Ah I see, a man with no dream and ambition. Well good luck in life then. No need for the name calling. But again, I understand that gaming IS your life. *hands in life to merkcity*

  • Thatswhat i told my friend about xbox live it cost so we got the better deal but he said that it cost but look at what they have (man when i saw it i was thinking sony was way behind) have you seen what it offers? tv shows, demos for games both consoles have like iron man demo, and i think they get movies

  • LOL, what? Xbox Live costs 50 dollars a year, and you have to pay in addition for the downloadable content like TV shows, demos, and movies. And while at it, these TV shows and movies are crap, except for maybe one Family Guy episode. By the way, you DO know that Peter Dille confirmed that we’re getting TV shows and movies too, right?

  • Listen, Konami isn’t a part of Sony. Do you understand that? So Konami screwed the beta, that totally got nothing to do with Sony. And hey, if you like tv shows and demos that much, you know what to do right? Sell/throw your PS3 out the window and just grab an Elite. Done.

  • thanks for the english lesson (lamo)

  • I stay with the blog. No one told me the US was not getting it today. :)

  • I saw what we were getting but still xbox360 already had it is what im saying

  • Actually, we’re getting downloadable TV shows and demos. The concept is cool, but personally, I’d rather buy a hard copy on blu ray.

    Here’s the link:
    http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/4/playstation_to_finally_get_movies_tv_shows_sne_

Hope it’s not crap like Laguna Beach or Hannah Montana or something that Microsoft boasts

  • So you’re excited for Laguna Beach and Hannah Montana episodes that Microsoft boasts? Really… I’d rather watch Walk Hard on blu ray, which I’m going to buy after work today.

  • i never said anything about sony

  • Not to mention that Sony’s all giving us updates for free – we don’t need in game XMB or Home, yet they’re giving it to us for free. Not stroking them, but when you compare each company’s efforts, Sony is the best value here.

  • i agree (but i never said anything about sony)

  • Okay then, that’s cool. This is Konami’s problem, but you have to realise: it’s only a beta. Beta testing is designed to test out problems like this – server stability and kinks that need to get worked out. I understand you’re pissed, and I was as well (the whole Konami ID scenario as well as the awful servers). They announced a delay, and MGO’s start date will be determined when they announce one tomorrow.

  • merkcity sure got his panties in a bunch. Wow, take a chill pill. Maybe go talk to your shrink too. I think you take gaming way too serious. It’s just for fun for me. Nothing to get so worked up over.

  • im not worked up just making a point i like sony i just want our system to be the best one out there no flaws

  • I think that jumping through all these F****ing to get the dowload to dowload, the crazy download times, getting a Konami ID, then getting to run the game and the servers being down is a really $#!tty move on Konami. How the F**k are you not gonna have this $#!t running on the day you announce? People take time out to of their schedules to play your f***ing Beta and you then anounce its playable on the 24th and not the 21st? Does Konami have there heads up their asses?

  • “the crazy download times”

The crazy download times? I had to trouble downloading anything. The only problem I had was registering.

  • God calm down guys

I love mgs I always have always will
ive taken days off work to play mgs, spent over £200 just to own a MG game I cant even play
But seriously this is what a Beta is for.

The reason that they wanted us to use konami ID’s insted of psn is because to begin with it was supposed to be just for a few country’s
Everyone knows how to make a psn account for another country, konami just wanted to have some sort of control so that this sort of thing didn’t happen

But Konami decided at the last Minuet to be fair and let all of Europe play, think about how many people at the last minuet would be trying to get ID’s and trying to hit the server

We all know this game is gona be insane, lets just show some support
Who cares if we stayed up late to try it out. There’s plenty of time to sleep when you’re dead

  • this is nothing compared to the RROD and the xbox live (paid for service) fiascos either separately or (especially) combined.

  • Im just saying that if Konami wants my business, then they should make good on their word. Just dont piss on my head and tell me it raining. I bet by the time it finally goes live I’ll be playing GTAIV. I’d rather pay for and online server that works than not pay for one that is crappy. Oh and one more thing…isn’t HOME supposed to be out?!

  • BrianC6234

    “the crazy download times”

The crazy download times? I had to trouble downloading anything. The only problem I had was registering.

It took me about one whole day to download the Beta and the update.

  • I still like the fact that the beta will be a few days longer, so I’ll have to wait less after beta is over for the retail version. I’m a little surprised that well, people are surprised a beta had problems. If you have ever downloaded any beta type program you know there will be problems. Beta is almost a guarantee that something will not work, thats why some stuff go threw many Betas. Anyways MGO was not even part of the game I was expecting to get. It kind of became a great bonus.

  • Maybe the beta test is actually for Konami to see/document how we all react to the delay??!!
Maybe this was all pre-planned…maybe Konami is actually BIG BOSS!! :)

  • or maybe even THE PATRIOTS!

    …cheezy, I know..but i had to do it! :)

  • I just want to play the beta and they are having just to many problems. Is there anyone who got Crackdown for the beta of Halo 3 because I didn’t? Did u have problems, the same issues?

  • I haven’t seen anything here from Konami but I just saw this about the new beta launch date now being April 25th.

“Late last night we delivered the disappointing news that the Metal Gear Online Beta had been delayed due to server constraints. When the delay initially occurred it appeared that Konami wasn’t sure when they would be opening to the beta to gamers outside of Japan, but now we have an answer. Konami released an official response stating that the Metal Gear Online beta will relaunch on April 25.

Now before you get too excited, due note that Konami may delay the beta again if any unforeseen circumstances should arise. So let’s hope that everything moves smoothly the second time around.

Start date: Planned for 04/25/2008 24:00(PDT). While the start is planned for the weekend, it may change due to unforeseen circumstances.”

  • Hello, this is the first time for MGS to have an online multiplayer support. Think before you say something perhaps?

  • Has anyone else had the issue of your confirmation email not being sent to you. I’ve tried about 5 different emails and it will no send the email to any of them. Don’t know if it’s necessary to confirm the account in order to play online as it only says purchasing items for certain ONLINE titles will be affected.

  • no problems with confirmation … but about releasing on the weekend, would that make things worse since more kids are home??? lolz, the madness…

  • @ Big Boss

It’s more than likely more complicated than throwing more hardware at the situation. It’s quite possible that the software they created doesn’t effectively scale to handle that many users. If that’s the case, then they’d have to possibly rewrite a large portion of the back-end code to handle everything.

I’m frustrated that the beta isn’t getting off to a good start, but I really doubt the problem is just not having enough bandwidth or hardware limitations

  • this is not the first time theyve played mgs online…
metal gear solid 3 subsistence came with online play :D
    like everyones been saying.
    its just a beta
wait for them to fix stuff man stop being big babies
