PLAYSTATION 3 Brand Campaign Kicks Off

Hey everyone, I’m Kim Nguyen, Marketing Manager for PLAYSTATION 3. This is my first post and I’m happy to report that the PS3 brand campaign officially kicks off this week with our online campaign. The first of many banners will appear today and run through December. In a nutshell, the theme of this year’s campaign uses computer animation to model key PS3 iconography in a black onyx world. Phew, yeah, that’s a mouthful. Better yet, why don’t you see it for yourself. This link takes you to the “Blu-ray” banner and is just the beginning with lots more to come. Stay tuned…

  • I think the sound should be enabled automatically when you mouse over the banner and also some sounds when the “animation” before the video begins, like a scream in the Heavenly Sword etc.

  • This doesn’t seem like it will come off as anything more than another banner ad campaign.
    It’s still too much cinema blockbuster garbage and not enough about the gaming experience. Is the PS3 made for me to play games on, or get suckered into BluRay with?

    Former, let’s see a broader variety of titles. Latter, forget it. Sony’s formats can be superior in many instances but they never garner wide mainstream adoption.

  • @53: Hahaha…she’s no relation to Tila Tequila/Tila Nguyen. Vietnam just has like 3 last names and Nguyen is one of them.

    I should know, I work with 7 Nguyens and none of them are related.

    Good job on the ad work. Now if you can figure out how to get around Adblock Plus everyone may see it. ;)

  • Sony used to have these great and strange European advertisements on TV, it made you wonder what something was and then a couple of second later it’s Ratchet and Clank or something.

  • I don’t agree with the 50 posts declaring that Sony’s TV campaigns suck. On the contrary, MICROSOFT’S suck. It just so happens that they’re using the advertising you’re used to, which is what M$ does best: take an overused idea, twist it to add their product, push marketing with $$$$$. profit.

    don’t listen to the haters Sony, I for one have LOVED LOVED LOVED the PS3 commercials, especially the US ones. The European ones, I get, but are very odd and most US consumers wouldn’t like the amount of thinking it requires (see: not much) to understand..but even so, they are cool. Stay different Sony, don’t cave in and fight at M$’s level. You know the proverb.

  • Finally a good advertisment.

    “If people want blu-ray they’d buy a blu-ray player.” If people want both games and bluray, they’d buy both. Which is why advertising blu ray is so important, to show consumers that PS3 is both a BR machine AND a gaming machine, thus in the rollover video, it shows Uncharted to demonstrate beauty of BR at the same time to show that PS3 has great games like Uncharted.

    P.S. this ad is so much better than those bizzar baby crying ones.

  • When marketing the PS3 people should learn something about it. The “this is living” commercials were the most pathetic adverts I’ve seen in a while.

    The ad banner looks interesting.

  • I agree having the Bluray player AND the gaming side being shown is the best way to go-

    i have seen a new Blu-ray player at a cost of $499 for just the player..

    So basically you get 2 for 1 with the PS3 AND internet AND media streaming AND home movies and music players AND etc. etc.

    If more people knew they could get a cell-powered computer that also plays games AND Blu-ray movies for the same price as a standalone unit, of course they would want the better deal!

    I say make INSTEAD of only one campaign that is all graphically about the same,( i.e. all the magazine ads, internet ads, and tv ads are about the same graphic design..)

    Instead make a bunch of ads DISTINCTLY tailored for just certain demographics..

    Keep the high tech ones on harcore gamer sites and T.V. tech shows etc. etc. and of course gaming magazines..

    But for the younger audiences, the Disney channel and network t.v. after school/ Saturday morning cartoons and kid-internet sites, give them something they can relate to- even a new cutsy logo works wonders…kids are so impressionable- make them HAVE to get on for christmas!!..

    AND MAKE A WHOLE AD CAMPAIGN ABOUT SIMPLY FUN THE PS3 IS!!!! MAKE IT MORE PERSONABLE!!! SHOW KIDS PLAYING WITH WIRELESS CONTROLLERS FOR FREE ONLINE! SHOW PARENTS POPPING IN A MEMORY CARD FROM THE LATEST FAMILY TRIP AND EASILY ACCESSING A SLIDE SHOW ON THE TV! SHOW SOMEONE LISTENING TO MUSIC WITH COOL VISUALIZATIONS GOING TO THE MUSIC!!!! HAVE A FAMILY SIT DOWN TOGETHER AND WATCH A BLU-RAY MOVIE IN “HIGHER” DEF!!!

    Cmon! this is great system…let everyone else know!!

    we here at the forum know, hardcore gamers know, but people who read gaming mags and internet gaming sites are trying to make up their minds, and parents just don’t want to spend that much “for just a video game machine”

    Time to face facts some things could be done differently, and perhaps even better..

    my 2 cents, take it for what you will.

  • banners typically change so posting a link wouldn’t necessarily work–although you could go to the page and refresh it until the PS3 one comes up I guess….

  • To be honest, I skip internet ads as often as possible and in fact just don’t notice them anymore.
    … the majority of people that check out this ad will likely be Playstation owners.

    I’d rather see an increased TV presence. The Heavenly Sword ads are incredible… but Playstation also needs to advertise all that the PS3 can do – without getting into those wierd “artsy” baby/ rubiks cube type ads.

    .. it’s amazing to me that most people still don’t realize that the PS3 has FREE online gaming, that they have a PSN store to download demos and trailers – basically more information needs to be in the advertisements to entice people to the website and the website needs improvement to explain ALL the advantages of the PS3 (including the differences in all the SKU’s out there!.. and a new one on the way – how utterly confusing!)

  • I seem to be having some problems, I can’t see the add at all. I have IE and Firefox, and on both of course the latest Flash en Java stuff installed.

    But no matter what I do, I see nothing coming up. Anyone having an idea as to what’s going on?

  • I’ve seen your adverts for the first time on Kotaku, but since it’s not full size it’s virtually useless as you only get to see half the video and the other half is cut off. Hardly effective marketing. I would ask Kotaku to fix it or ask for your money back as it’s not being displayed as intended.

    I just checked that, there is no PS3 ad banner, BTW am in Australia would that be the reason u reckon?

  • maybe the ads are javascripted to recognize IP addresses, but i think it’s just that you have to refresh your page till the ad shows up, because it is rotation with other ads.

    I’m sure the ad will show up in other sites soon!

  • It is insanely cool and yes,as KIm said,computer animated !!! It blew me away!!! And it’s way better than that banner anyway

  • Idea for a commercial: A car from motorstorm jumps a mountain and leaves a big cloud of dust behind it, when the dust settles they show Nariko fighting with some guys and one of them gets hit by an arrow, then they show where the arrow came from and its Nariko’s sister, she shoots another arrow and it passes by a Warhawk, the Warhawk shoots a missile and it hits a building, behind that explosion appear some Chimera trying to shoot the Warhawk, but they get shot by humans from Resistance, one of their bullets hit a metal gear thats fighting with Snake, and when snake shoots it down they fade into the dead metal gear and fade out to the PS3 where it says Play B3YOND.
    That would be awesome.

  • Good work…..but, I don’t really think it shows that much of what the PS3 does and has to offer. (PSN, games, media features, etc.)

  • Also, SHOW PEOPLE PLAYING THE PS3 OR HAVING A GOOD TIME USING IT!!!!

  • @ KnaveX – dude that would be soooo sick!!!! Sweet ideas bro. You should have done some preliminary designs and then pitched it to Sony. LOL but seriously that would have been tight I love hearing about peoples ideas for PS3 ads because there are so many people out there with different ideas. I’m sure Sony appreciates it too and who knows maybe one day we might see all of our ideas on a commercial for our beloved PS3’s.

    Frankly I was thinking at the same line, having all the games appear in one commercial would be the best way to promote the PS3 and to show what it has to offer.

    and honestly, thats what the PS3’s good at, games and fun, thats the message that should be delivered.

  • Nice to know there will be more marketing for the PS3, but do you really need these sophisticated and abstract brand campaigns? I mean sure they are stylish and people who are familiar with the Playstation brand or PS3 already will appreciate it, but what about people who don’t? You need to run ad campaigns that educate consumers about the system because a lot of people don’t even know the things PS3 can do. Now that you’ve announced the pricecuts in Europe you need to advertise it aggressively. It’s the only way you can compete with the 360 this holiday.

  • The 399 euro PS3 is gonna help.. sure sucks to be American right now.. Europe gets the PSP Slim first and now te PS3 40GB.. now tell me is it just because your economy sucks? or is Sony just making more money/profit over here in Europe.
