I thought you might be interested in seeing this short time-lapse video from the recent May Gamers Day held at our Motion Capture Studio in San Diego. I thought this might give you a taste of what we have in store for everyone now that E3 is only three weeks away. If nothing else, this should give you a sense of how much effort and planning goes into organizing a press event, and just imagine, the SCEA E3 Press Conference is typically 3-4 times larger than our annual Gamers Day!

There is a lot of talk out there about the new format for E3. You probably heard that it has been moved from the LA Convention Center to a smattering of hotels in Santa Monica. I guess the show’s tagline says it all — “Get Ready for Something New.” The crew over here is racing like mad to get everything ready, so while we’re preparing for setting this year’s benchmark, take a look at this video and we’ll have more on E3 soon….

  • are you guys going to have a live broadcast of the E3 press conference on the net?

  • Its true Sony needs to set some serious standards for third party companies. PS3 can produce better loooking games than the xbox360. I am really tired of ports and the way they are done for the PS3. Personally i think micronaut wasted their money on GTIV for extra content. With UK saying no already to manhunt 2 i really dont see Rockstar doing anytthing outrageous to GTIV anytime soon. San Andreas really was a huge game that touched everything. Sony you were smart not to waste money on GTIV4 extra content. The game alone should be enough. Plus we got Saints Row 2 coming out as well.

Thanks for beefing uo your P.R position just need more sensible adds now.

  • I hope Team Ico got something too show at the new E3..And what happened to that online rpg Ambrosia Oddyssey for ps2? I think it was Square that was putting it togheter.

  • Looking at the current console situation I think that all 3 companies have some work to do.

Wii – I think the Wii is a nice idea but its only its price point that is maintaining sales, the software on the console is not strong, the games feel gimmicky and the novelty soon wears off, my son has already lost interest in the Wii. I think that Nintendo have done well to establish a foothold back in the console market but I question its ability to maintain Wii sales past year 2.

360 – Has steadily built up its software library, strong features on the hardware side but the hardware build quality is atrocious. Massive failure rates seriously undermine the console, I have had 4 in 18 months!!! Joke. The 360 is like its older brother, the xbox, a solid machine that does what you expect. 360 wins through at the moment, Live is a great service, I dont care that it costs £40 because I think its good value. Good services and features undermined by poor hardware quality.

PS3 – 12 months behind its main rivals and poor media relations have hit it hard even in Japan. More time seems to have been focused on all the features of which it has in abundunce, the time has come to focus on its primary feature, the GAMES. Too many of the lauch titles have suffered because they are lazy 360 ports. Sony needs to find a way to reverese this trend and make the PS3 the developers platform of choice. The PSN has also come under scrutiny but I feel that there is promise there, Sony need to learn from Live which has been around for 5+ years.

  • Hmm, i was looking at the conference times, Sony’s looks to be a bit longer than Nintendo’s, and I wonder why Microsoft has set one for the evening on the first day.

  • Sony need to come out with classic titles like they did with playstation one..
It was amazing what came out of that generation..Series like Resient Evil,Silent Hill & Syphon Filter and plattformers to the max. I would like to see some new series that good.

  • I’d like to see something a little less vague then 380 titles by March. Something more like a list of titles, even if it’s incomplete.

I’m right on the verge of buying a PS3… gimme a list of must have titles and a bunch of others numbering somewhere around 50, at least, and I’d be sure to pick one up by the end of July.

  • I’d like to see some upcoming info for Manhunt 2.

Or a topic about the facist style banning of it.

  • Man, I am so F’n tired of the horrible things I hear in the press regarding you guys. Every place I go on the internet is pessimistic and slandered. Even when I go to stores, people are boasting how the Wii is far more technologically advanced just because it has motion controls! Coming from a tech junkie, this is bad. Very bad. You guys released (IMO) a beautiful piece of high end hardware, at a more than reasonable price (not for gamers per se, but definitely for custom PC kids). But it has done absolutely nothing for your rep in the industry. The amount of time and money you put into this console is beyond me, yet no props are given whatsoever. It’s becoming a slippery slope really. If you guys fail at all this generation, I will tell you why. The Wii causes that unbridled “HEY! I DONT ACTUALLY HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY GAMES ANYMORE?! AWESOME! NOW I CAN SPEND MORE TIME PISSING MY FRIENDS OFF BY BEATING THEM AT SIMPLE PUZZLE GAMES AND LAUGH AT THEM WHILE I DRINK HOT SAUCE!” and so on and so forth. Most of the people I know that fell into the Wii fad cannot find one single reason of why they enjoy it besides that “its fun.” While I sit back and try to not have an anuerysm thinking about that statement, let me explain why that bugs me just so much. First off, I have been an advocate of video games since I can remember things. Every major system found its way to my hands at one point or another, and I spent my time with each, cradling its good and bad, all while learning, LEARNING HOW TO PLAY. I emphasize that because that stems my major problem with this Wii fad. Its causing everyone, gamers and developers alike to realize that they dont have to put their full behinds into making a really amazing game, as that a stupid multiplayer tennis game is just as good. ITS NOT, DONT BE FOOLED. If I wanted to swing a virtual tennis racket, why, I would just go out to a tennis court and SWING A FREAKIN RACKET!!! The reward would be much more substantial and the actual learning process is in the least, respectful. My point here is that Nintendos console is teaching people to put in the least amount of effort possible to get results. And that is unacceptable. Video games, as an industry whole, have come a long way. Are you ready to just toss that to the dogs? I didnt think so. This E3 better be good guys, cause if not, the world is going to hell in a handbasket.

  • That was a really kool video, can anyone tell me the music from it? Because i’d really like to get it if its on a commercial record label.

As for the rest of the points made later on in the comments section (i couldn’t be bothered to read all of them, so i don’t know how this topic came about… again) i think there is a combination of significant factors affecting the whole situation.

One significant effector can be summarized in an analogy that i am currently in, and that is i am a gamer, and i only have so much money, now i happen to have bought both a 360 and a PS3 (bear with me here) but i only want ONE console, otherwise, well by my standards, things get too complicated and expensive with games for each system, and all the hidden costs (not including a voice headset out of the box… Sony). So at the moment, i have a PS3 and a 360 sat on the floor in front of me, 2 games each, and neither going anywhere because there is very little to distinguish, that being said, its not true, unless you start talking to the mass public. This is a situation most people are in when walking into game stores, and hence why you hear that 360 sales have hit a wall, and PS3 sales are slow, people are not deciding because there is nothing to decide between if you are walking in… That is except price, which has fortunately be sustained by brand, so far at least.

Now, looking at that, you begin to realise that you are either a Wii kind of person, or you are a 360/PS3 person. This distinction is large, mainly because the Wii is visibly distinguishing itself, by using motion controls is able to very simply and casually say “look, i’m different, you can see that, come buy me because the other consoles are so last gen”. This is not a true statement, but what do the majority of people care, its cheap, new, and in a sense, a cheap thrill, and is appealing to alot of people, because alot of people like cheap… and thrills.

Now price is not what i am trying to point out here, its more that the Wii is impulsely bought due to its visual distinction. Now if the PS3 was marketed abit better to the public, then maybe people would see differences starting to emerge, like HOME, LittleBigPlanet, the final fantasy’s, and even warhawk, which could probably introduce motion controls. This emphasis must NOT be on graphics, because again, there is as of yet, very little to distinguish 360 and PS3. Now i know, most of the people that are commenting on here are long time gamers, and have the HD setup with surround sound and 1080p 32″ LCD tv linked via HDMI and super wizzy broadband and will shout “But it looks better! Look at all that HD goodness! Its sooo obvious!” and i would happen to agree, there is a difference, but most people will be glancingt at adverts, and watching the adverts on a SD tv, and therefore, will be clueless.

Now, to be honest, i’ve kinda lost the point i was trying to make, however, to skip through a couple of things quite alot of the hardcore gamers have been bought up by Microsoft, that is not all of them, but some to most of the them, the tech junkies are sitting on the fence, like quite alot of the gaming public, and then you have the casual/immdiate gamer, who like his/her Wii and DS, but prefers walks on the beach (i know, i’m sterotyping, its hard not to in this situation, *sigh* look what branding makes us do). Unfortunately for Sony, they have missed the hardcore gamers and therefore spenders by about 6 months, and are loosing casual/immediate gamers to Wii due to price, and shere lack of visual differences (i mean its another black box, with the same controller). This still leaves a large chunk of market though, about 70% ish (assuming that hardcore makes around 10%, and casual/immediate/impulse gamers make around 15%). This 70% most likely own a PS2, and plan on continuing to own a PS2 for a while yet, and as it happens, know about the PS3, and have a vague idea of what it can do.

Now as we all know, a vague idea is not good enough to justify a purchase, especially of such long term investment, and thats what Sony wants, so it needs to make its MESSAGE CLEARER. Sony last gen did not stand for graphics, but now it looks like they are, last gen they weren’t about the internet, now its looks to the consumer that they are, and its alll well and good if the company undrestand that it will make things better, if that initial justification is not there, people will wait, they don’t want a Wii, mainly because its doesn’t have functionality, they don’t want a 360, because that intimidating, so they wait.

Hopefully Sony will bring E3 home to the general public, this blog is great first step, so that people know and can understand the messag sony wants to portray, because at the moment, even i am getting mixed signals, and like a first date, if the person is giving you mixed signals, you probably won’t instantly want to go and live with them (pun not intended heh). This is a dialemma that people are over complicating, and hopefully it will get sorted, sooner rather than later, because i’m sick of having two consoles on my floor with two games, not going anywhere.

  • I’d like for Sony to explain why they’re preventing me as an adult from experiencing any AO-rated content on their systems. In this era of increasing prudishness regarding content in video games, isn’t it enough to let the market determine the viability of AO-rated games? Shouldn’t “Manhunt 2” be given the opportunity to live or die based on its own merits, and not the backward morals of a bunch of suits who are scared about political blowback?

Some people are offended by the content of AO-rated games, and they have every right to not purchase those titles. But I’m personally offended by Sony deciding to play nanny and tell grown adults that they can’t make their own choices about what sort of content they want in their video games.

    Grow up, Sony.

  • @jh2112

How is Sony stopping you from playing it? Its the certification boards that have stopped it from coming out due to the rating they have given the game, the AO rating means that certain store who have a policy regarding AO rated games will now not stock the game. In the UK the BBFC have decided that the game is not fit for purpose and have banned it outright.

    Check your facts!

  • @Brazzauk

I read on Gamespot that Sony does’t allow AO rated games to be published for their consoles. Jh112’s point is to allow a variety of content and let the consumers decide what to purchase. I’d understand if it was sexual content, but it is just violence. It is fictional, and I don’t agree with ESRB’s rating of giving fake blood a rating which doesn’t allow it to be made as a game.

  • Hey Patrick! Judging by your avatar. Do we have any big news in E3 about KILLZONE!!!??? C’mon give us a hint? I’ll be excited if that will be the case even though E3 this year is not going to be as grand event as before. Keep up the good work guys!

  • I’m all up for stream-able E3 press conference, right here. :)

  • I hope something is being done to keep some of the exclusives games away from MS. MGS4 and i also hope that sony is going to get us some DC for GTA4, i’m bying the ps3 no matter what tho.

  • off the wall question here:
will sony reveal a dual shock 3 controller for the ps3? believe me, its needed in gaming in order to give the player a full affect of gaming. some of the big wigs need to listen to gamers and stop telling us how to feel when we are gaming

  • I belive Sony will bring something to the Table for all of us :D

  • @Brazzouk

aaquib was exactly right — Sony’s policy is to not allow the release of AO-rated games on their consoles, so Rockstar wouldn’t even have the option of releasing “Manhunt 2” for sale on their own website while bypassing the retailers who refuse to sell AO-rated games. Microsoft and Nintendo have the same policy, so the AO rating is an immediate kiss of death to any console title.

Explain to me why Sony thinks it’s OK for me to play NC-17 movies on their system, but they need to “protect the children” when it comes to AO-rated games. That’s just ridiculous. The age of the average gamer today is ~28 years old, so this nanny approach they’re taking is condescending and offensive.

I hope Rockstar releases “Manhunt 2” for the PC with all of its AO content intact, and I hope it sells through the roof. Maybe it’ll be a wake-up call for the console manufacturers.

  • I wonder if sony will show unbelievable in game footage of killzone…

  • New adventure games from sony and Squareenix and other japanese games like ICO ..I want some good adventure games.

  • one more thing about the AO rating system:
if sony wants to get back in the game they would need to sell the blue ray rights to the adult entertainment industry. sony should stop trying to be big brother and let parents take care of there own children. video game stores down here make it clear to parents that some games of strong content. ive seen it happen a few times when purchasing my own game. once the parent found out, they would just return the game back to the shelf.

  • were can i get some previews of games that will show at mini E3? I hope Sony has some good surprises for us ..I live in Europe and the only game i bought is Motorstorm but im dying for Ratchet MGS4,Silent Hill,Resident Evil5 and some new stuff from Team Ico..And i want to se some good plattformers show up like Beyond Good..Maxim0 Jak & Daxter
