Announcing the Play At Home initiative

Stay safe and pick up Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey for free from 16th April through 6th May

People all over the world are doing the right thing by staying home to help contain the spread of COVID-19. We are deeply grateful to everyone practicing physical distancing and take our responsibility as a home entertainment platform seriously, so we are asking our community to continue supporting the safe choice and the need to Play At Home.
As a thank you to all who are doing their part to lessen the impact of this pandemic, Sony Interactive Entertainment is pleased to announce the Play At Home initiative.
Play At Home has two components: First, providing free games to help keep the PlayStation community entertained at home; and finally, establishing a fund to help smaller independent game studios who may be experiencing financial difficulties continue building great experiences for all gamers.

Free games to Play At Home

To support Play At Home, PlayStation will try to make those occasionally dull moments more exciting by offering Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Journey available for free* for a limited time through digital downloads from Thursday 16th April midnight BST / 1am CEST through Wednesday, 6th May midnight BST / 1am CEST. Once you redeem the games, they are yours to keep.
Play at Home on PS4
For most of you, Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection will need no introduction. This three-game collection from the masters at Naughty Dog includes Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception—all meticulously remastered for PS4. We can’t imagine a better time for globe-trotting adventures with Nathan Drake, an iconic cast of characters, and thrilling treasure-hunting action gameplay.
Then there’s Journey, a beautiful, celebrated adventure that is as moving as it is mysterious. The game’s life-affirming message is timeless, and perhaps more important now than ever before.
In alignment with SIE’s goal in preserving Internet access in the US and Europe, game downloads may take a little longer, but we appreciate the understanding from our community as we take these measures in an effort to preserve access for everyone.

Creative funding

Independent developers are vital to the heart and soul of the gaming community and we understand the hardships and financial struggles that many smaller gaming studios are facing. With that, SIE has developed a fund to support them during this time. We have earmarked $10 million to support our independent development partners. More information about the fund, including participation criteria, will be made available soon.
During these days of physical distancing, fans have turned to gaming for moments of respite and enjoyment. At Sony Interactive Entertainment, we are privileged to bring this much-needed entertainment. We know this is just one small step and we are thankful to be able to offer this support to our players, our communities, and our partners.
*In Germany and China, users will have access to Knack 2 and Journey for free for a limited time (Thursday 16th April 1am CEST / 4am CST through Wednesday, 6th May 1am CEST / 4am CST).

  • Why couldn’t Knack 2 be available for all instead of just Germany and China, the Nathan Drake collection has been a PS+ release so many would have grabed it then Knack 2 hasn’t been a PS+ release so now would have been a good time to get it.

    • Agreed majority would have already got the free copy through ps+ I know I did and had already bought it before same with journey great initiative but shame the games have already been given away or were cheap anyway. Hey ho free is free maybe given an alternative to those who have already previously purchased/downloaded both as they are essentially getting nothing. Cheers keep up the good work tho. Stay safe ?✌?

    • Just make a german account and make it primary and it will work just fine, platinum the game and delete the account.

    • Couldn’t disagree more!!!

I detest Knack and feel sorry for the Germans.

Really looking forward to Uncharted 1,2,3 remastered!!!

      Thank you Sony

    • PS+ games are not free :D they are just rent its funny how players call it free copy of the game when they have to pay to get it :D

    • Knack 2 is a great game. It plays great, looks better and moves better than the original. I love Knack.

I also love uncharted 4 but I’m sorry I think the original 3 games are trash.

    • I don’t agree with your opinion, but that’s what you decided to share. I believe Knack is an amazing and unique game. This game should recieve more attention atleast, for all those particles working together in Knack is a piece of engineering itself. This game is friendly, so a game to play with your niece and nephew is always welcome. There are people who also think that way, and for them this game is a real treat. The next time you recieve something for free say thank you, for you are not entitled to recieve anything.

EDIT: your comment’s been edited to say thank you, therefore I wish you the best of all.

    • @SpiritakSvK15 These two games are NOT PS Plus games, although they have been included before. They are free to everyone, regardless of PS Plus. Please read the article.

    • Ditto own both games pointless release from Sony

    • Are they available for ps3

    • Journey is, see my comment 133.1 just above, and #118 on how to obtain them.

  • Shame I already own journey. And got the uncharted collection on plus. So shame I can’t get it permently. ??

    • Brilliant move from sony, eh? I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but this looks like they giving away stuff which almost everyone claimed through ps+ – on purpose.

    • No they give away good games for people without Ps Plus. You do realize only around 40 % have Ps Plus right.

    • So screw the 40% then? Strange choice.

    • Isnt it the case that its still available for purchase? I surely hope they dont screw over like that and the platform will still allow to get it permanently! Then again, I dont have my hopes up, they probably ignored this fact during Store development :D

    • Seems to be what they could have done as you’ll never please everyone but maybe had they done a selection of 4-5 games and said you can choose 2. Or even just a 10% code for the PSN as rarely see those ever. Hey ho I bought em all day1 one so not lost anything just no benefits either haha

    • while that is great what about the millions who bought the console and all these games day1 and or are paid subscribers so as has been mentioned got them for free? Anyway. No benefits for us. Just new customers and people who didn’t have plus already. It is what it is but yeah as said I’d have taken knack2 it’s better than free games I already paid for ??‍♂️✌??

    • It’s called life Roswee, get over it and move on. You got the game, so what? If you can afford games on day 1 release then just buy a new one? Lucky you that you don’t have to wait. Count yourself already privileged.

Maybe they should have just done NOTHING at all because then at least people weren’t selfishly complaining about what they think they are or aren’t entitled to, just thinking about their own circumstances.

Next time Sony, do nothing – whilst no one sadly gets anything, it stops people from moaning. You’ll never please everyone so maybe you should just not bother?

Everyone moaning over something that’s free. Pathetic. Stop wasting your life, get some perspective on what’s important, stay at home – and if you have the game already, or don’t like it – tough! Move on and get over it already.

  • You can’t buy games you have on ps+, so if we already “own” them via a service that locks it once you stop paying we wouldn’t be able to claim these. Hope I’m wrong, and Sony just flicks a switch or something but this seems poor from them.

    • Create a new account and solve the problem

    • Yep, what he said, as alternative get it on a new account, and if you make your console primary for that account (can be done across multiple ones) you can enjoy those games on your main account on the same console. A bit of a hassle, but is a good workaround :)

  • nice gesture.. just wish it wasn’t games you’ve given away on PS PLUS before.

would prefer Knack 2 like other countries got to be honest..

  • I have Uncharted: The Nathan Drake collection in my account already thanks to PS+.

This means that I’m unable to redeem it until my PS+ expires, and I would like to do it so I’ll be able to play it even without subscription.

Is there a way to redeem this despite having a PS+?

    • Go on a second account without ps+, make it primary account on the ps if you want the trophies on your account, and enjoy

    • This kinda kills the whole point: I’d like to have the game on my main account.

    • Exactly. If Microsoft can enable this on Xbox, I don’t understand why Sony can’t. They are missing out on potential sales (obviously not in this case, but when people want to “buy to keep” titles when reduced etc).

  • Like a lot of people I have these. I even have knack 2 but that’s no bother. It’s a great deal for anyone that doesn’t have them. Well done Sony.

  • Would have preferred toilet roll….

  • Why not give the players something they don’t already own? Since you’ve been given out Uncharted Collection and Uncharted 4 on Plus recently, at least give them Lost Legacy. Which I also own, but it would have made a better gift for most people. But nooo, that’s probably the PS+ game for June. And yeah, Journey was a Plus game a few years back. Whatever, this comes off as a cheap PR move.

  • Thank you, Sony!

  • Don’t want to sound ungrateful but can PS+ members own the games indefinitely instead of until our subscriptions end? Seems like you’re disadvantaging paying subscribers.

    • Exactly this. ^ I’m not planning on cancelling my PS+ anytime soon (in fact, I have paid for multiple years in advance) but like the idea of having these two awesome games indefinitely, just in case. To everyone who didn’t have them yet, enjoy!

    • Go on a second account and redeem it

  • Never seen so many people crying about the fact they’re not going to get to play Knack 2; a game they were literally never going to play anyway until they read this blog post.

  • So, paying subscribers get nothing at all. So nice…

    • You got Uncharted 4 and Dirt 2.0.

and you can also download Uncharted Collection and Journey if you don’t have then.

But please, let us know how your subs entitles you to more.

    • I’ll assume you’re not trolling and you just don’t know how PSPlus works.

Since we already got both games on the IGC (Instant Game Collection) we can’t purchase them again. That means even if our subscription has expired they’re still locked behind our PSPlus license and we can’t get them for free.

    • make another account and claim uncharted

    • Damn, and that’s coming from a PS+ subscriber, it seems. That’s when you know you’re being a crybaby.

  • Even though i have Uncharted collection and Journey already, It’s nice to see you supporting everyone in these rough times. Lets anyone without PSPlus get it. and let’s be honest anyone had Uncharted Collection via PSPlus doesn’t need to keep it forever, you have enough free time on your hands to finish all 3 games, and you will probably keep PSPlus going for the rest of the year

  • Woah… Thank you sony. I got uncharted collection from ps+ but it is expired. This is a great gift. Stay safe.

  • I know many own these games, especially if you own PLUS but it is still a nice gesture anyway. Above all, the fact Sony has earmarked $10 million to support independent development partners shows they care.

  • What about VR games ? Or even platform games ? Those ones are popular TPS/FPS…

  • That’s a good idea sony cudos

  • I mean, it’s a nice thing to do…. but maybe some games that haven’t been on PS+ in the last couple of months?

  • Hi

Will these games be available on PS Now as well if they are not their already?

    • Eh? Why would you be asking for them to come on PS Now when they’re literally giving them to you to keep for free in a couple of days?

    • @Alex79uk

A PS4 user can have PS Now. But a PS Now subscriber does not mean you have a PS4. So the games being made free to download are only useful to those who have a PS4 and have not bought them before via the playstation store or got them as part of PlayStation plus service.

    • Come on now, whilst that’s technically possible, there can’t be more than 4 people in the world subscribing to PS Now just to use on PC. Stop being silly.

    • ? I am one of them 4. Cheaper than getting a PS4 if you don’t already have one.

Anyways just went to Playstation store online and claimed them to use at a later date if I wanted. Noticed alot more free games are available on the store, just sort by low to high and you will find other free games I added Fortnite and Destiny 2 as well.

  • Nice gesture, but what about those of us who have paid for PS+ continuously for years? Nice to get nothing for our loyalty!

Smacks of a cheap PR stunt ahead of a new generation.

  • I already have both. How about some other options?

  • Well I already have Nathan Drake games but the Journey is a new one. So thank u Sony

  • Already have them via ps plus.

  • This will feed the addiction even more, thanks for that!

  • This is a lovely idea ❤️♥️✌️✌️

  • this is good, glad smaller studios will get help. I’ll take the Nathan Drake collection. Cheers

  • I was hoping for a Vita game…so I could take it down the beach with me while having a barbecue.

  • That’s great, also I already own those game through PS+, so can I have some toilet paper instead?

  • Nice initiative for the studios !!!

However, I really struggle to understand why Germans are treated like superiors to others by SonyEurope.Couch co-op Knack2 should be enjoyed during quarantine days by ALL Europeans,NOT just the privileged ones.I hope you either fix this *exception* or at least do not offer this extra free game to anyone…

    • No they weren’t treated as superior… They’re not getting an extra game. Knack 2 is replacing Uncharted there (and in China). Germany has strict laws on violence in video games (some violent games do release there but have green blood and so on) so Uncharted could not be given for free there I assume. China might have some similar issue.

    • When PsPlus January games were announced in January there was no exception for Germans and those with an active subscription got this “violent” game Uncharted Collection.I don’t believe the law restrictions changed the past few months , so apparently Sony Europe offers Knack 2 as an extra free game to all Germans Ps Plus subscribers ignoring other European PsPlus subscribers. This pretty much looks like “superior” treatment…

    • Knack 2 will replace The Nathan Drake Collection in Germany and China, at least it appears to be written like that.

“*In Germany and China, users will have access to Knack 2 and Journey for free for a limited time (Thursday 16th April 1am CEST / 4am CST through Wednesday, 6th May 1am CEST / 4am CST).”

      As for why, who knows.

In the case of Germany, there might be some legal hurdles encountered when trying to give away a free game depicting nazi’s ( Uncharted 1 ).

China might be offended by the depictions of Tibet in Uncharted 2.

    • Just to clarify, there is a German law that content over a certain age rating cannot be given away for free. Ps plus is paid for, so don’t think it applies to uncharted 4, but it does apply to this. This is the same for free games, where you can buy a founders pack to get the game, but can’t get it for free.

    • Are you OK? Because it sounds like you’re suggesting Knack 2 is superior to Uncharted collection ?

  • Im just going to make a german account to get knack 2 get a platinum for the collection that’s 3 free games

  • mind boggles at some of these responses, they didnt have to give anything so why get so hurt that they giving 2 games away to all the people who dont have plus or maybe didnt have it at the time.

Something good for someone else does not mean anything bad for you, if it bothers you so much just go back to before you read this and pretend they havent given anything away, problem solved

  • Of all the games, you pick one that was recently on PS Plus so you can save as much money as possible… And hardly anyone will be interested in Journey… Tight sods.

  • Well thats darn nice of you

    Thank you, Sony ?

having free games FOREVER is fine by me

  • Great Initiative! I hope the games are available in Australia too.

  • Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

  • What a huge amount of entitled, ungrateful, whining children in these comments. 100% expected… 100% pathetic.

    • this^^ entirely this, people like these whiny children make us regress back to the days when you were embarassed to say you were into gaming, so 2 games you have already got are been given to some other people, how does it affect them in any way…its not taking anything away from them, yet they spill self entitled toxicity where ever they can as there voice must be heard wah wah wah , i rarely visit the blog and even rarer the comments these days as its just embarassing to see what they have become…but i would like to say well done sony and thanks, you didnt have to do anything, so dont let the vocal inority put you off…… and with that im off to put my head back in the sand and pretend they dont exist and go play some backlog and enjoy games on all my consoles

  • Exactly this. Shows how spoilt some folks are. Among global pandemic where people are dying, losing their jobs or their relatives and friends, there still are those that will cry, because they would like another game or already have one or another and therefore somehow feel not enough pampered to. I find that both repulsive and, as you say, pathetic.

  • Thanks!

I played all the Uncharteds on PS3, looks like fun to replay them now :)

  • Will Uncharted be available for PS Plus members. Currently we have problems with buying games that we “have” in PS Plus collection and cannot buy them via PS Store.

  • People why are you complaining every single time.

Every single time it’s: “I already have it”, “I want something else”, “It’s not good enough for me”, “Give me whatever I want!!!”

For christ sake, yes I have the games, I got them through PS+, but they are good. I like Uncharted so for more people to experience them is great news. Beside during this crisis we currently have I am playing some of my backlog.

    • Uncharted 3 was Sonys worst ever Exclusive as far as I’m concerned. However it was nice of Sony to offer these games for free. Uncharted 2 is my favourite.

    • Not more worse than tlou

    • Strangeheaven

Your point is exactly? You may not like Uncharted 3, but calling it the worst exclusive is a bit of a stretch. Anyway good for you, doesn’t really have anything to do with my comment lad.

That sentence didn’t make much sense. However I guess you are voicing your opinion that The Last of Us should be worse than Uncharted 3. Which again has nothing to do with the comment. Also considered it was widely received as one of the best Playstation exclusives, I would say that your comment holds nothing in it.

Just a side note. Sony did not have to give the games. It’s not a part of any of the subscriptions. So the whining here is worthless.

Anyway have a good time, if you only ever complains then there is not much value in your lives.

    • My mistake, Sonys worst Exclusive was Heavy Rain. That game bored me to tears. But Uncharted 3 is inside my top 5 worst Exclusives for me.

I loved The Order 1886, even though it was short. That game has huge potential. I hope there’s a sequel.

  • With respect to buying a title when you already have it as a PS+ title. I’ve been told in the past that you can call support and they can remove your PS+ license for a game so you can then actually purchase it.

So rather than working around with creating a second account etc… Just call Support and asking them to remove Journey / Uncharted Collection so you can then ‘purchase’ it for free. If a ton of people do this, they will maybe realize it was not a good idea to give away PS+ titles.

  • Awesome! I’ve been wanting to play the uncharted series so it’s great for us who are spending so much time at home and also fantastic support for the developers!

  • Thank you Sony :)

  • I already have them both but I appreciate the gesture Sony, also will you be doing this with more games or is this a one off

  • Sounds like a great deal, I might already have Uncharted 1 & 2 on the PS3 but not only can I get remastered versions of them, but also Uncharted 3 and Journey!

  • How do I get them? Can someone PLEASE send me a link or instructions?

    I own ps plus…

But I’ve only find a demo for free…

  • Guys, a dumb question, but I couldn’t really understand from the post. Do we get to keep these games forever or we can just play them until May 6th?

EDIT: Never mind- I just found out we keep them forever

    Thanks Sony!
