See the next evolution of Hello Game’s sci-fi epic in action ahead of next week’s launch

Hello! On 14th August No Man’s Sky Beyond will launch as a free update for PS4 and PS VR. We are focused on development, but we know people are hungry for details.

Nearly eight years ago, with a love of sci-fi, we started writing the very first lines of code on what would become No Man’s Sky. It was always an innovative and ambitious game, but over the three years since release it has become broad and deep in a way few games are.

When we sat down to write those first lines of code I could never have imagined the kind of trailer we just recorded. A multiplayer game, with base building, trading, space combat, giant mechs, economies, freighters, first person, third person, and so much more, all set in a beautiful procedural universe.

When we made No Man’s Sky, we always wanted it to feel like you had stepped into the cover of a science fiction novel. Beyond is another step closer to that goal.

Even better, if you own a headset, you can experience all of this in Virtual Reality.

No Man’s Sky Beyond aims to bring a huge range of features together into a cohesive whole, with expanded online, virtual reality and hundreds of changes big and small. We want Beyond to be the best time for new players to pick up a copy, for lapsed players to rejoin, and for the players with a thousand hours save to see the game with fresh eyes.

No Man’s Sky has always been a science-fiction fantasy come true. That feeling of isolation and loneliness as you explore an alien world for the first time continues to be a unique experience.

However, one of the coolest things you will notice from the trailer is what we call the Nexus, a shared social space that brings people together to share social space where they can play with friends or join with random strangers like never before.

Suddenly your ship that you spent 50 hours earning can now be seen by others in the Nexus. Your rare spacesuit and unique helmet can be shown off to other players. Friends and strangers can visit that massive base you’ve been working on.

Progression in No Man’s Sky is so much more meaningful when you can share it with other explorers and so much more engaging when any creations or missions become shareable. Once you meet fellow travellers who knows what space-faring adventures you will go on together.

This is an incredibly important update for us, but it’s also just another step in a longer journey, and we’ll continue to support No Man’s Sky in this way for the foreseeable future.

    • And how would you like them to ‘deliver on some remorse’?

    • Acknowledge what they did was wrong, admit to it and apologize. The only thing Murray ever did was paint himself as the victim.

    • They worked for free on the game for two years post launch, and continue to do so. I’m not sure how much more of an apology you want.

      The guy recieved death threats. Over a video game. Death threats. Over a video game. The Internet really is a vile cesspit of scum.

  • Hopeful some of my bugbears will be fixed too (management of fleet so I can get better balance of classes and improved Freighter inventory so I’m not trawling through individual vaults to name but two minor niggles) but I’m looking forward to stepping back into it. Any chance we’ll see ship trading anytime in future?

  • This looks outstanding and I absolutely love the addition of PlayStation VR! Can you tell me if you’ll be adding HOTAS support for the title? Using the Thrustmaster controller with VR is breathtaking for immersion, and I would love this!

    • I highly doubt it as that won’t be any good for character movement.

    • All I require is HOTAS for the ship flight, and then switching to dualshock/motion for movement is fine. Idea of flying around space and landing etc with the HOTAS is very enticing.

    Ive not played this game since launch but wow it’s come a long way.

    • Nah, most of them are still bashing it (one particular person above in this comments section again always does). Sure, the launch was pretty bad but I so respect the devs for working their butts off and going far beyond any reasonable person could expect of them with all the huge free expansive updates to the game. They could have just abandoned the game. They could have charged money for the various updates (since they provide far more content than most costly DLC). But no they’ve done a great thing by providing all these awesome stuff for no extra charge whatsoever. They’ve more than made up for any failure or ‘misleading’ they may have done originally. Anyone who can’t ‘forgive’ them by now is just a stubborn lil trolly person who needs to just get over it.

    • You’d think everyone would have moved on by now, but no, there are lots of people utterly unable to even acknowledge the work Hello have put in since release. It’s genuinely baffling to me how anyone can be so bitter for so long. They’ve done more with this game than anyone ever imagined, and all for free! Some people really need to grow up.

  • You can argue the game isn’t as bad anymore, but I find it odd to praise a developer for delivering game features that were promised 3 years ago and calling it a free update. This update was paid for by the people that bought the game at full price when it launched, and by those who paid a fraction of that a few months later. I don’t think what they did was right, and will continue to say so, just like you and others will praise them for ‘turning things around’. And everything aside, I still think the game is bad, but I won’t argue with you or anyone about that, cause I’m not going to tell others what games to like.

    What I will argue about is the moral aspects of deliberately misleading consumers and sell them an unfinished game at full price because your office got flooded and you need money to continue development. The story of NMS launch and Sony’s involvement is well known, but look up Hello Games Ltd on a UK website called companieshouse, dig up some of their history, judge for yourself and think what you will.

    • Yeah, the thing is, you’ve not even played the game. Not for any length of time whatsoever. Your PSN profile shows that. So unless you’ve been playing it on PC, you’re talking nonsense when you claim its a bad game. You might not like it, but it’s not a bad game.

  • One of the main problems I had with this game was always the pricing. It put me off the game since March 2016 when you announced that.

    The nerve of you, with such a small studio, not even taking into account the terrible and horrible underdelivering you did at launch, to be asking for 60 quid upfront for this game on PS4 AND Steam. I say “AND” because people always say it was Sony’s fault it was 60 quid and not the studio’s….. because as we all know, Sony definitely controls the prices of games on Steam lol.

    Its down to 20 quid on PSN right now……………. and that’s still too much. All physical versions went down to that price since 3 months after launch nearly 3 years ago now but could you get it anywhere for that price? No because nobody wanted to stock the game anymore and the first wave of stock sold out for fear of customers still coming back in for refunds.

    And then the nerve to bring it to Xbox, 2 years later, for FIFTY bucks still. Why are you charging the price for a game that a studio with multiple hundreds of people would usually charge??? There are 10 of you in the studio or something right?

    And I’m not here to argue how much the game has improved since launch. Plenty of other games improve since launch and nobody praises or thanks them for the courtesy. I’m just explaining why I will never touch this game as there are so many other games to play out there that are better and with far less horrible things going on behind the scenes. Anyone who defends it, you DAMN right they better do free updates after the massive sales and profit they got for this game with its full blown full AAA asking price.
