Runic Games’ classic returns with an updated interface and PS4-exclusive pet

Here at Perfect World Entertainment, we’re excited to announce that we’ve teamed up with the developers at Panic Button to release Runic Games’ classic dungeon crawler Torchlight II on PlayStation 4 for the very first time on 3rd September!

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost an entire decade since Runic Games unveiled the original Torchlight game on PC. This beloved little dungeon crawler first burst onto the scene right when hack’n’slash ARPGs were at the height of popularity. Torchlight captured the hearts of gamers across the world with its charming art style, earth shattering combat, lavish loot drops and unique pet system (Who could forget that ferocious little ferret?).

These signature elements were incorporated into the game’s sequel in 2012, which finally introduced a way for Torchlight fans to party up with their friends in combat.

Now for the first time ever, PS4 players can experience the magic of Torchlight in a new version of Torchlight II that has been developed exclusively for consoles.

Panic Button has redesigned its console user interface to help players navigate through the sprawling continent of Vilderan with ease. In addition, the team has developed a new targeting system and an intuitive control scheme for PS4 controllers that makes combat feel even more powerful.

In the true spirit of Torchlight II, players can team up with their friends on the PlayStation Network to wipe out hordes of monsters, complete challenges and earn new PS4 Trophies.

We’re excited for PlayStation Blog readers to be the very first to learn that we will be releasing a brand new pet, exclusively for PS4! When Torchlight II launches on 3rd September, PS4 players will automatically unlock the Faerie, an enchanting new pet that is brand new to the Torchlight universe.

Whether you are a longtime Torchlight fan who can’t wait to relive the glory or you’ve decided to jump into the action for the very first time, there’s no better time to play Torchlight II than when it’s released on PS4. We look forward to seeing you all this autumn!

  • Gosh this one is old … but you got my money if there`s local co-op :D

  • Not for me. If they were to bring back Baldur’s Gate, Champions of Norath, or port the PC versions of Icewind Dale/Neverwinter Nights/Baldur’s Gate to PS4 then I’d be beaming for days.

    • You know that’s actually a thing, right? BG, ID, NWN are all coming to PS4 this fall (or early winter in case of NWN).

    • If they’re doing those games, they should do the Dark Alliance games too.

They were fun games on the PS2 (and had local co op) and as they’re PS2 titles they could be a straight PS2 on PS4 port. Though maybe they could finally release the third game that had a trailer in 2.

    • Such a weird thing to say since Panic Button have nothing to do with any of the Infinity Engine games nor are they even in the same genre!

    • @PredinCZE: That’s awesome news, I’m shocked that I didn’t know this (thanks for nothing, GameSpot!). Thanks for letting me know.

    • @MiseryPrincess: The Dark Alliance games were what I was initially referring to. I had a friend (who is no longer with us ) who had some difficulties with gaming and we used to play these games and Champions of Norath. To play those again would bring back some sweet memories.

    • Ooh. I just assumed you meant the “original” series..

Apparently (though i’m not sure this is remotely true) the Alliance games are pretty “rare” PS2 games, so it would be good if more people got to play them (though i’m not sure who owns the rights, if anyone).

  • They are doing that (at least for baldurs gate and planescape)

  • Holy crap this is awesome! I wanted to replay this and I thought there’d never be a shot of this series coming back since the studio closed. Is this just the published bringing it back or did I miss Runic getting a second chance?

  • Dope, thank you for releasing it on PS4 !

Yet, the following part “players can team up with their friends on the PlayStation Network” tells me that we won’t be having local co-op.

Was pretty excited for having local co-op in order to play with my SO since she enjoys Torchlight games a lot.

  • This is some great news … But PlayStation you got a problem again there’s a hacker going around on psn hacking into accounts and holding them for Ransom it happen to me last week on tuseday( I had to make a new account because of it ) first they get in and wait till the account own is offline or at work and log in as them then they change the email address affectively makeing it inpossible to log back in to get the account back , then they tell you or your friend who are online you need to play them via Wmz or bct … This hacker has locked me out of my old psn on all three Sony PlayStations ( PS3 PS4 and veta) because they are in the account and changed the email you can’t report them. It says it detects no infringement … Who ever the hacker is it’s not anominus as this is affecting me and anyone else who might have the same experience …. Please Sony before e3 is out do a deep scan of your psn servers who ever it is is useing agrassive algrivems ( I’m altistic so I may mess some words up sorry ) to gain passwords

  • Eh it’s not a bad game but after playing the original version long enough and got access to steam workshop with ppl making improvements you can see [DELETED] some flaws with torchlight 2. Now if this was on switch on the go to kill time then sure it’s great. Titanqiest and diablo 3 on it is great so far so would add this for that system.

  • Torchlight was great 10 years ago and was a real Diablo-beater, BUT the Diablo III enhanced edition has now raised the bar as far as console ports go. It all depends on how good it looks and how well the control system works as to whether I buy it again on console. My days of clicking every time I want to fire a skill are behind me now – just hold that button and spam it, sonny. :)
