Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered and The Witness are your PlayStation Plus games for March

Seminal shooter meets incredible indie puzzler in March’s PS Plus line-up

Two brand new titles join the PlayStation Plus line-up on 5th March offering dramatically different gameplay experiences but sharing one key trait: widespread critical acclaim.

Let’s find out more:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered

Activision’s colossal Call of Duty series is well and truly part of the fabric of modern gaming, but it was only in 2007 that developer Infinity Ward took the console world by storm with its contemporary spin on the popular WW2 shooter series it helped create.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a phenomenal success, winning players’ hearts with a memorable campaign and sleek online multiplayer. 2016’s Modern Warfare Remastered added a fresh lick of paint for a new generation of gamers, while respectfully retaining its snappy gunplay and brilliant level design.

Download it with PS Plus this month to relive a true FPS classic (in glorious 4K with PS4 Pro).

The Witness

Having had massive success with charming puzzle-platformer Braid back in 2008, creator Jonathan Blow promptly returned to the drawing board and spent the next eight years working on an ambitious follow-up.

The result was 2016’s The Witness – an enigmatic first-person puzzler set on a seemingly-deserted tropical island, dotted from one end to the other with a vast network of interconnected puzzles.

Boasting spellbinding narrative twists, and an unbeatable sense of satisfaction in conquering each puzzle, The Witness is a benchmark in design and environmental storytelling. Download on PS Plus this month for a slow-burning test of the old grey matter.

Both titles will be available to download from PlayStation Store on 5th March.

February’s games

In the meantime, you’ve still got time to download February’s PlayStation Plus titles.

Hitman‘s heady cocktail of sandbox assassinations should keep you busy trying to perfect the flawless hit, while mastering For Honor‘s ‘Art of Battle’ for truly devastating take-downs will take time and patience.

If you’ve not tried them, then now’s your chance – they’ll be available until 4th March.

PS3 and PS Vita games

As a reminder, PS3 and PS Vita games will no longer be part of the monthly games line-up for PS Plus. If you haven’t added the following PS3 and PS Vita titles from the February games line-up to your library yet, they will remain available until 8th March 2019:

Any PS3 and PS Vita games you’ve already downloaded, or will download, prior to 8th March 2019 won’t be affected by this change. Those games will still be part of your PS Plus games library as long as you remain a member. Your game saves and other benefits of PS Plus will also remain the same.

We thank you for your support.

  • Six games > Two games. Still £49.99 a year? Hmmm.

  • Come on, only two games, at least bring back the extra VR game per month

    • well that wouldn’t be much use to us non-VR people but yeah this sucks big time. Even if the two main games weren’t my thing I often found fun with one or two of the Vita games which usually had a PS4 crossbuy version too but just two PS4 games but still 50 quid a year? That’s not offering much choice or variety… and these two ain’t exactly worth a lot to begin with. That Call of Duty is a PS3 port…

    • The cod is a remaster not a port

    • It’s both a “remaster” (if you can even call it that) AND a port. And filled with micro-transactions unlike the original version. And you need to buy the DLC separately for more than it originally cost on PS3.

  • The disadvantage of owning 800 games is you have all the future PS+ offerings. [DELETED] I would actually find free games cool.

Whatever, enjoy the good selection this month.

  • Nice to see you ramp up the offerings to make up for ps3 and vita leaving.

    ……….

  • So the cost of PS+ has gone up.

We now don’t get PS3 or Vita content.

In the first month of this new PS+…

    A remaster of a 10 year old PS3 game…

    And The Witness…

    This is beyond pathetic.

    • Have you played The Witness?

    • The Witness is great. It’s still only two games, down from four for the same price as last month though.

    • For anyone who doesn’t know it’s a short pretentious puzzle game.

      Note that puzzle is singular..

    • There is around 40 hours of game in The Witness. How is it short? Was it too hard for you?

    • You claim there’s “40 hours” and then claim it’s “hard”…

I guess that’s why it was 40 hours for you…

The biggest problem is it’s not hard, just kind of dull, there’s only so many times you can do the almost exact same puzzle without feeling bored and unchallenged. The only reason to complete the line puzzles is to get more samey line puzzles. Exciting stuff.

    • Yes, I own The Witness, I bought it when it was on sale a long time ago.

It’s not a bad game, it’s not great either (imho). I can’t see I wrote these 2 games are bad, did I? I wrote the content that is given is getting less but the price stays the same. That doesn’t make me a happy customer. We never had a month in Plus history we only got 2 games.

    • So if we got Resident Evil 2 Remake would you say “oh it’s a remake of a PS1 game from 20 years ago?” Thought not.

Modern Warfare Remastered is a great game and is easily in the top 3 best CoDs ever

  • Ok, I’m HOPING we get more announced later in the month and this is just a bad “1st Month” of the new format. 6 games to 2 games is very disappointing, and I’m VERY easy to please most months…

Yes, we got more online storage, great, but the games are the visible benefit, and if 2 games is the new normal… Yeah, I don’t know…

  • So only 2 PS4 games huh…Nice work.

  • Well that’s very disappointing. I was expecting better quality PS4 games now that PS3 and Vita have been dropped.

  • From 6 to 2 but same price.

And you offer COD – literally the second most recycled-in-game-content game behind Fifa (and a remaster at that). Sure, it has its fans but… [DELETED].

No VR offering. Not even an appeasing cross-buy title.

Hard pass. And I’m sure I’m not the only person who’s going to just let PS+ run out. End of the line for me.

  • Wow… this is… not good.

Never could stand Call of Duty and this one’s a remaster of a PS3 game. And The Witness might appeal to some but I found it quite dull. And… oh that’s it? I hope a couple more games will be announced cos usually I find something worth playing among the usual six or so titles. If not.. then.. I don’t like to say it but.. this will be my worst PS Plus month ever and I been with it since almost the beginning.

I still enjoy the discounts and the cloud storage and such but yeah it better not just be 2 games a month now.

  • Well if that’s what the “free” games are like from now don’t think I’ll bother renewing. Poor showing Sony. Microsoft are smashing you with Games with Gold! ?

  • You’ve taken away 66% of the monthly content, charge more for the service and don’t offer anything else as a replacement, and to top it off, don’t even increase the quality of the content that is left. For the players…

    • Greatness retired!

    • Online storage is up 10 x, thats awesome. And its not the games you pay for, thats just a bonus

    • Oh yeah, I forgot how much it cost Sony to increase their almost non-existent cloud storage size to ten times that amount!

Ten times nothing is still nothing.

And it costs them next to nothing as well.

    • I’d rather have the choice of games than the extra save space

    • You say that, but for those of us that have been plus subs since day one, it was marketed to us back on the ps3 as the games option, so yes, it is the games i pay for, online play isn’t a huge deal to me and neither is the cloud storage.

Those were tacked on during the ps4 era and we accepted it because the game support was still there, if that gets weaker but the cost goes up, i see very little to keep me interested, I’ll stick around in the hopes it gets better, but for those of you saying “it’s not the games you pay for” yes it is, that’s how it was marketed to us, that’s why we’re subscribing, think a little before you post that BS response.

    • @Maaden_Swe for many people, it IS the games that we pay for. Me personally, I dont even play multiplayer anymore, yet I decided to renew one last time hoping that the monthly games would be worthy.

  • Two games instead of six. Price the same. Sad LOL.

  • Sorry guys but this is poor. Any month where you grease Activisions palm with my plus money makes me feel wrong but to just remove 4 games is a bit shocking.

I have been with you from the start and have seen the numbers go up and down ,but, when you last cut 4 from the line up we still had 6 left over each month.

We cannot wait for PS5 to see the numbers go up again as that could be another 20 months yet. Gold is £10 cheaper and offers 4 games. You used to be better.

    Try harder guys.

  • We’re actually getting less PS4 games, as the cross buy with Vita meant there were 3 or 4 titles for PS4 a month. Now just 2 and nothing else has improved.

  • Heh, why am I not surprised with this outcome… good my Plus ends in couple days. I don’t have PS4 anyway, so nothing of value will be lost to me.

  • Is this 1st of April ?!

  • You know… I actually came to comment in defence of this… But having paused for thought, I don’t think I can.

I don’t mind getting just two games every month, but this is a fairly poor start to the new regime. Don’t get me wrong: Modern Warfare is a great game. I enjoyed it… 11 years ago.

And The Witness is one of my favourite games… But I know it’s not a lot of people’s idea of a great game.

    I’m honestly worried…

    • You can always try to defend it. However, it doesn’t look too good for Sony.

    • Exactly. That’s precisely my point; I can’t defend it.

Posts like this usually attract people complaining as though they’re entitled to something more. And usually, that irritates me. But this is honestly inexcusable on Sony’s behalf.

Better hope they have something special for the PS5 right around the corner, because moves like this (along with the whole cross-play fiasco) is going to seriously hurt them at the start of next-gen.

    • You don’t need to worry about defending everything and anything. Let people say what they want. People always will and can complain. Besides, if it irritates you that people complain in threads like this, then you should just not read the comments. Better yet, don’t even use the internet anymore, let alone visiting these threads, because if you haven’t realised the internet isn’t a pleasant place for people who get irritated so easily.

    • Don’t worry – I don’t get irritated easily! ? I can cope with the complaints! I myself am joining the complainers.

    • We’re worse off but £50 for 24 PS4 games plus bonuses is still really good.

  • Price increase, remove ps3 and ps vita. Increase in storage space (who cares) and 2 lame games in the first month. Great sales skills. Who’s in charge? Fire them!

Don’t start me on VR (which I do have)

    Poor, very poor.

  • So now we only have two PS4 games??? We always had 3/4 PS4 games because some PS3/Vita games where cross buy. We pay the same price for PS+! This is poor Sony!

  • Wow um okay. Witness looks kind of interesting I guess. Sorry but CoD is just lowest common denominator dross. I’m sure that everyone who already wanted to play that already has.

  • Called it, freaking called it. 2 games, all those cross play games gone so we’ll end up with less per month too. Nice.

    • You called something that was announced a year ago. Wow you’re a wizard.

People who are surprised about this simply weren’t paying attention.

    • People expected the same amount of games or something anything to make up for the loss of support of vita/ps3, actually. So no, it wasn’t clear, at all.

  • People complaining about the loss of the PS3/Vita games pretending that they ever played them to begin with! The majority were terrible budget range indie pixel platformer titles that most never touched or at the very most added to their baskets every month! I will gladly download and play a bit of Modern Warfare again, good memories from the PS3 days..and also heard decent things about The Witness. Think most are bitter because they already own them..but that’s hardly Sony’s fault is it? First world problems at their finest.

    • I already got it free with call of duty infinite load of old [DELETED] I’m leaving ps plus never any good games sucks

    • Actually I played and enjoyed many of the Vita games especially those that were crossbuy wth their PS4 versions and often found many of them more fun than the bigger PS4 games we got. Often being much more creative and fun and less bloated with crap. Not all of them, sure. But it was great having the choice there and quite a few I hadn’t expected to like at all but ended up being by far my most played of the month’s titles. Modern Warfare is the type of tired FPS bullcrap that I’ve been absolutely sick to death for the past decade or so. Devoid of anything regarding imagination or creativity. And this one’s not even a recent one but a port of a PS3 game anyways so not exactly value for money.

    • Literally 1st signed up for the vita, and for quite awhile was happy with my collection growing just from plus. Before the ps4 was even out, before paid online but go off I guess.

    • Thats’ like; your opinion, man. And it’s wrong. We’re getting less stuff. For more money.

  • £50 a year for 2 games a month. You better have a damn good reason for upping the price and reducing the content.

    (Edited for you challenged people)

    • Er no babe, that’s not how the maths works. It’s not £50 a month, it’s £50 a year. So 24 games for £50. Sounds a bit better then doesn’t it? Admittedly not quite as good as 24 games plus another 48 that you never bothered to play, but still, £50 for 24 games is pretty good. It’s not like you’re going to be able to go to Ebay and get 24 PS4 games for under £50 (I have checked by the way, PS4 games go for a around a minum of £6 so you could get around eight)

    • Uhh no honey, I never stated it was £50 a month, I know it’s a year. Open your frickin eyes and learn to read.

    • So in defence of your first comment you admit you were wrong?

Anyhow if you don’t want ps+ don’t buy it.

    • Mate you said £50 for 2 games. You get 2 games per month so that clearly suggests £50 per month.

    • maybe thinks you only get two games a year, may not have said 50 quid a month but said 50 quid for 2 games, when its actually 50 quid for 24 games

    • You edited your comment lol

  • 2more games I already have

  • Since giveing us two games and cut off PS3 And PSVita ps plus games . Why don’t you cut PS4 ones since just giveing us two . It’s not good enough.

    • When IGC first began it was always two games for PS3 and having 6 was just a bonus for those who owned the other platforms. PS3 had to ‘die’ at some point and, what with PS5 being on the horizon, it’s time was overdue. I’m content with having just 2 games per month again although what they’re offering this month is bordering on disdain towards their consumer base.

    • Not exactly we also had psone titles and minis. It was usually 5 games or so plus avatars and themes.

    • It was more because there was also ps1 game and minis as well

  • Underwhelming to say the least.

I signed up to PS+ basically because I was strong-armed into it, like most of us, because multiplayer was tied to this subscription. Now with 4 less games (2 of which on a very popular handheld, with a hugely dedicated fanbase that you just ignore) for a hugely overinflated price for what? I see no value here.

I guess I’ll just let my subscription elapse and just focus on single player games instead of this rubbish.

(In its defence, The Witness doesn’t look bad, it’s just not my kind of game. CoD though?! LOL)

  • Increase the price, decrease the games.

    What a total joke.

  • I just canceled my auto renew of ps plus… thanks for making that easy, Sony.

  • The Witness is cool and all, but CoD? they took Vita and PS3 out for CoD? bummer :( and I was sooo excited to see the new lineup… to be Honest i was expecting more like 3 PS4 games….not just 2 but ohh well.

  • I already own The Witness and CoD was a PS+ game last summer. they’re all the same. And now we’re basically getting one PS4 game less, because most months there was one title cross buy.

looking at what games Xbox is giving out each month and all the additional crap Sony has pulled recently, like forcing censorship on developers, or selling overpriced garbage PSVR, I might just go green next gen!

  • The Witness is a fantastic game, but I already own it. And I have absolutely no interest in military shooters.

I’ve been subscribed to Plus almost since the launch of the service, and this is the first month I’ve felt PS Plus offers me absolutely no value whatsoever, and with only 2 games a month, I have a feeling that’s going to be a recurring theme, sadly – either because I’ll already own the games, or will have no interest in them.

I hope you guys at PlayStation find some kind of way of adding value to the service, whether it’s by giving us more games, giving us choices for which games we get, or through some other manners. I hope I’m given a good reason to re-subscribe when my membership runs out towards the end of the year, because if this continues, I don’t see much of a reason to re-subscribe for the first time since I joined

  • Two top quality titles. That’ll do nicely. Shame my PS3 and Vita get no love any more, but at least the remaining PS4 game quality seems quite high here.

  • This a joke right? So glad i didnt buy a new subscription. I saw this coming that we get less content (as games) but increased online storage. Really not gonna pay 60 euro a year for only 2 games and some more storage. (Online gaming not included) Unless u give us more or reduce the price i’m totaly done with plus.

  • From 6 games to 2 games. Guess I’ll be ending my PS Plus subscription when it ends. I was only subscribed to PS Plus because of the free games. I don’t use it for multiplayer or even cloud storage. So now it’s pointless having the PS Plus subscription any longer. XBox has 4 games, should have at least kept up with that. This really sucks! They should have only ended the PS3 and Vita games once the PS5 is released!

  • I was looking forward to how the lack of PS3 and PSV games would be compensated. Now I can see that it is NOT going to be compensated at all. Go figure.

Xbox’s Games with Gold is now a better value proposition.

With 6 games every month, the potential for complete disappointment was quite low. But this month I feel it quite well. I already own The Witness. It’s a very good game and I recommend it but it means there’s only one “free” one for me. And that game is a remaster of a game I still own on PS3. Modern Warfare is also excellent and those who haven’t savoured it should definitely give it a go. But I’m no longer interested in it.

So, in the end, this month has NOTHING for me. I’ve been a PS+ subscriber for over 4 years now and this is a brand new feeling for me. One I want to go away as soon as possible.

  • PS+ is not worth anymore.

  • I was sure it’ll be something like in june 2012 (https://blog.eu.playstation.com/2012/06/05/heads-up-playstation-plus-update-6th-june-2012/), when we received a whole pack of games. But now I guess there are no reasons to buy PS+, except online multiplayer, two games each month, really? Oh, and back in june 2012, online multiplayer was free.

  • Thank you for The Witness (I just realised the pun as I was typing this)!

  • Two games for the price of six, less is more?

  • Its not the games you pay for guys, thats just a bonus.

    • PlayStation Plus features: Unleash the full power of your PS4 with online multiplayer, exclusive discounts on games from PlayStation Store, PS4 games to download and play each month, and more – only for PS Plus members. “Its not saying its a bonus!”

    • Actually, when I first signed up for PS Plus it was on PS3 when online was free so yes, I did join it for the games and the games only. I’m never really one to put down the games we get but with the removal of PS3 and Vita games I was expecting more from the 2 free games. Very poor showing.

    • When Plus was supporting PS3/Vita I was mostly buying it for the games. At least that worked couple years ago, when golden age of Plus was booming and honey/wine was flowing through my consoles. However, after PS4 launch, games in the Plus on the older consoles were really mediocre or borderline boring (not my types of games), so I’ve stopped even checking them out. Of course there were gems like Iconoclasts. For some time I’ve been paying mostly for better discount prices, but looking at overall product… Plus in its current state and is not worth its price. Not to mention prices in PS Store are laughable compared to used retail ones.

    • @Maaden_Swe: How many times can you type the same thing and be wrong? Watch this guy and find out!

    • Spot on, Gotrek_74! Logic according to Maaden_Swe; posting the same answer many times makes it true.

    • Why do you keeo saying this like it’s fact?

If I don’t play online or need the extra storage, then I am strictly paying for the games.

    • I used to give Nintendo [DELETED] for their bad service but at least it gives you access to a full library of games and costs for 1 year about the same as 2 months of PS+.

    • Of course you pay for the games. You do realise that PS+ was a thing before online costs, right? In fact it came in the same format and at the same price! So they just haphazardly threw online access in there to get people to subscribe just for that.

    • Every time. Every. Single. Time.

Yes we do pay for the games. We pay for the service which includes free games every month. It’s not a “bonus” it’s a part of the offering. They literally list it as a feature of PS Plus.

      https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/explore/playstation-plus/

    • In actuality, IT IS the games you are paying for and has always been so. Back when the Playstation plus launched on the PS3, you paid for the “free” games – the online saves and background patching was the icing on the cake. The online play was free of charge on the PS3, PSP and vita.

The following is an excerpt from the June 2010 Playstation blog, explaining what the PS plus is all about:

“Launching on the 29th June. The current PSN features will remain free. We are still very committed to PSN as a free gaming service and are certainly not planning on reducing this service following the launch of PlayStation Plus. Plus is an evolving service and the features included at launch will be: Games – Discounts – Exclusive items on PlayStation Store – Full Game Trial – Automatic Downloads”

It was only with the PS4 that they tacked on a charge for the online play.

I reiterate, Playstation Plus has always been about the games.

  • I suppose we should be greatfull that there are no indie/mobile trash games but still……….[DELETED] poor showing ??

  • That was good COD, i’ll play it only for memorable singleplayer.

  • As a PS4, PS3 and Vita owner (all of which I play) I was at least hoping that the number of PS4 games would go up the 3 to compensate for the lack of games for the older systems. I’m going to seriously consider if this is still worth it in the coming months. Disappointing to be honest.

  • Corner the market, rise the prize.

    Simple economics.

  • … And don’t forget, boys and girls, that you need to buy the same DLC packs as you did 11 years ago at a higher price for the same maps, that aren’t included in the Modern Warfare Remaster, because “Activision”. Oh, and remember to pay for the pay-to-win microtransactions that have been added post release!

This is not two games! At most it’s a game and a half, if you can call an almost 3 year old remaster of an almost 12 year old game with half the content locked behind a massive paywall a game. I’m surprised that Sony would even consider an Activision game for Plus, given the current climate in the game industry, when it comes to the publisher

    • Wow, that is greed on a completely different level. I thought EA was bad with DLC for DLC (Sims).

Wasn’t Destiny similar when it was on plus?

  • Wow, great work Sony. A game that was originally released in 2007 and a puzzle game worthy of any mobile phone app. Glad I spent my hard earned money on my ps plus pass.

    • Whilst I can’t defend Sony at this point, The Witness is far more than a mere ‘mobile’ game. It’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. Try it, you might like it. It goes beyond any puzzle game I’ve played, it’s incredible.

    • Withess is worth mobile phone app? What mobile apps are as good as Withness?
