Here’s everything you can do in Anthem’s open demo, out on PS4 today

Javelin choices, locations, missions and more detailed ahead of 1st February launch

It’s finally time to get hands on with Anthem. The Anthem Open Demo is from 1st – 3rd February and it’s your chance to jump into a Javelin and explore the beauty and chaos of the world you’ve heard so much about. If you’re wondering what the Open Demo experience is like, take a second to check out these four things you can expect from the Anthem Open Demo.

1. You’ll get to visit Fort Tarsis

The demo starts in Fort Tarsis, the walled city that you call home in Anthem. It’s your hub for everything you’ll need between missions — it’s also a space where you are protected from dangerous forces that torment the outside world.

In Tarsis, you can visit the Forge and customise your javelin with loot you pick up on missions. You can also head to other locations in Fort Tarsis – like the Enclave, the Bar, and the Arcanist Lab. This will be where you get to know the characters of Anthem, and many of them will be around to chat, though their contracts (special in-game missions) will not be available.

2. You’ll get your own Javelin to personalise (two of them, actually)

In the Open Demo, you’ll start out as a level 10 pilot with a fully equipped Javelin of your choice. You can unlock a second Javelin of your choice (either Ranger, Colossus, Storm, or Interceptor) at level 12.

Your level will be capped at level 15 for the Open Demo. Since you have access to the Forge, you’ll also be able to personalise your Javelins and change your loadouts to equip any new gear or weaponry you get on missions.

The earn rates on XP, Items, and Coin have been adjusted to give you a full Anthem experience over the relatively short timeframe of the Open Demo. You’ll also be given some Coin in the demo so you can have the chance to purchase and equip cosmetics.

3. You’ll embark on expeditions

In the demo you can head out into the world, completing missions and discovering some of the secrets it holds. You’ll meet the Arcanist Matthias, part of an order of researcher-monks charged with unlocking the mysteries of the world, who will send you on a three-part expedition to track down a shaper relic with mysterious powers.

Explore, fly, and swim in Freeplay and take on emergent challenges as you travel through a section of Great Falls Canyon and some of the surrounding areas. You’ll even get to delve into one of the Strongholds, high-level dungeons that require a full squad of Freelancers to complete.

4. You’ll encounter unfriendly wildlife

Whenever you venture into the world of Anthem you can be sure that you’ll encounter beautifully dangerous wildlife. You might be hoping for a grabbit sighting but don’t let your guard down — there are living, moving threats that can come from all angles.

These creatures don’t care if you’re in the midst of a Mission or casually exploring the world in Anthem’s free-roaming mode Freeplay, they’re poised to make you have a no good, very bad day — and cause major damage while they’re at it.

You may encounter wyverns, vicious flying creatures, will attack anything they come across, raining fire on their prey from above and leaving you desperate for a way to douse the flames and regain your health. Oh, but if you think that’s terrifying, just wait until you meet an Ursix.

This Open Demo will give you an amazing look at the full Anthem experience, so mark your calendars for 1st to 3rd February, and get ready for the full game’s release on 22nd February!

  • No thanks after the disaster that was the recent demo I cancelled my preorder and will not be getting it

  • Very underwhelming demo. I preferred Destiny and only played the first one.

  • Haven’t played the beta. Is it really that bad?

    • No, not from the little I have seen, but I rarely play betas or demos since they are almost never fair compare to the final result.

    • Such as what? Sea of Thieves and Fallout 76’s “Betas” that were exacly like the finished game with this game being the same too? Oh yeah, THAT bad.

    • it’s like a poor mans warframe [much less content] with gorgeous graphics

  • Get destiny 2. A far superior, complete, less buggy, better game play, better graphics, and nothing to do with EA or BIOWARE. This is the nail in the coffin for those 2 companies. I should feel sad, but scammers should be brought to justice.

  • Sorry to hijack this post but the PS Plus post has too many comments to get a reply.

Does anyone have good Intel as to whether or not cloud save will still be supported on Vita, with them removing it from the game rota?

  • Spot on, cheers.

  • Do you need ps plus to play any part of this game release or does it work like destiny and the division

  • At the end of my last mission, the demo told me I could select a third Javelin but I don’t see how. I have two already. Any help?

    • Didn’t mean to like your comment. This article clearly states that in the demo, you are given a javelin and one unlock to use towards the other 3 javelin types.

    • Maximum two javelins for the demo

    • This is false. You are given a standard javelin to start. Everyone gets the same one. Upon reaching level 12 you can unlock a second javelin. Upon reaching level 13 you can unlock another javelin and upon reaching level 14 you can unlock the last Javelin. I have unlocked all of them and am only level 15. That said, I’m not real impressed with the javelins or the game and am debating cancelling my (so far $5) preorder. I only gave $5 just to try demo and am unimpressed, not because of the bugs but due to it taking forever to kill an enemy no matter that gun, or the enemy big or small. The alts to be pretty useless and there seems to be waaaaaay to much monetization already.

    • If you didnt play the VIP Demo you can only have two Javelin (Ranger + whatever you choose to unlock at lv12).

you still get the prompt telling you that you unlocked another javelin which is kinda missleading tho….

You are also wrong. Only those who played the VIP Demo can have 4 Javelins in this Demo.

  • Love loot grind games and have 1000’s of hours played in both Warframe and Destiny 2 but Anthem is quite possibly the dullest game I’ve ever played in the genre, it’s just so bland. I really hope BioWare can sever ties with EA and make great games again and not cash grab service garbage like this.

  • I’m not impressed with this game. I placed a small preorder just to try demo so I didn’t waste money on something I didn’t like. I’m glad I did. Guns seem to do the same amount of damage no matter how good the gun or how big or small the enemy is. You can only carry like 6 bullets for snipers, finding ammo is a nightmare. Alts are useless. Figuring out where to go or what to do is a nightmare. The fact that they have monetized almost everything and let you know that you need to buy coins every where is a joke.

  • I’m going to use the best feature of this game and all EA games this gen, easily avoid purchasing it lol. And please, please, don’t send me 400 marketing emails about this game over the next 2 weeks Sony.

  • I actually kinda like it but I won’t be pre-ordering it. Let’s see how the full version does with reviews and general reception. The demo was a little buggy and not always very smooth on a PS Pro but I’m told it’s still a big step in the right direction since the “VIP demo”.

  • Another glorified shooter. But wait! You can fly in it!

    No thanks.

  • Good fun but BUGGY AS HELL!
