Play 30 minutes of Resident Evil 2 in the new “1-Shot” demo, out 11th January on PS4

5 expert tips for getting the most out of your trial run with the reimagined horror classic

Thirty minutes. That’s how much time you’ll have with the Resident Evil 2 “1-Shot” demo when it comes to PlayStation Network on 11th January!

As the name might suggest, you can play as much as you like for 30 minutes of in-game time, but once the clock runs out, so does the demo. You’re going to want to maximise your time playing through this unique experience, so we have a handful of tips for players to keep in mind when they sink their teeth into the demo:

1. Scavenge and survive

The Raccoon City Police Department (a.k.a. R.P.D.) is littered with useful items, so take a moment in each room to look around and gather up First Aid Sprays, Green Herbs and ammunition, and make careful use of the storage box. You’re on the clock, but you might miss something useful or important if you try to rush through!

Your map is a great way to tell if a room still has something left to be discovered in it, so be sure to pay close attention to it. Red rooms still have something left to find in them, and any item you’ve discovered but not picked up will be highlighted, too.

2. Stay healthy – and alive

Death isn’t the end in the demo, as you can continue as many times as you like. You can’t turn back the clock, though, so be sure to keep Leon in top shape!

The iconic Green Herb from the Arklay Mountains allows you to recover some health, but it really shines when mixed with a Red Herb to boost its restorative properties. A single Green Herb will still do in a pinch if you’re desperate for a health boost.

If you happen to come across a First Aid Spray, be sure to keep one on you just in case — it’ll bring you to full health, no mixing required.

3. Fight or flight

Zombies are resilient, and just because you put them down doesn’t mean they’ll stay down. While a carefully aimed shot to the head is a good way to stun the shuffling undead and make a quick escape, you may want to try shooting other parts of their bodies for different results.

Your end goal is to survive, and sometimes the best course of action is to run away before the situation gets worse! Keep an eye out for wooden boards, too — you can avoid conflict entirely if you blockade certain windows before zombies come crashing in.

4. Seeing red

The R.P.D. is a big place, and it can be a little daunting to figure out where you’re going at first. There’s lots to explore in the full game, but to make the most out of the demo, stick to the first floor at the beginning and look for red lights, such as laptop screens, shutter controls, and exit signs to get around.

If you’re really lost, press the Options button to check your objectives and take a closer look at your map. Once you meet a certain police Lieutenant, you’ll have what you need to further explore the building.

5. Inspect everything

Resident Evil 2 has plenty of puzzles to solve and crucial items scattered all over, so be sure to take a moment to take a closer look at the stuff you’ve gathered. The clock will stop any time you’re in a menu, so you’re safe to investigate, rotate, and learn more about each object in your possession without worrying about the timer ticking down. You just might learn something about what you’re holding on to!

Keep these tips in mind, and you’re sure to survive the exhilarating Resident Evil 2 “1-Shot” demo coming to PS4 on 11th January. Regardless of if you complete the demo or if the clock runs out, you’ll be treated to an exclusive, cinematic trailer that sheds new light on what to expect in the full game.

  • Well, I’m delighted there’s going to be a demo, but…

    If it is possible to ‘complete’ the demo, thus suggesting that, understandably, only a finite amount of the game is included anyway, then why put a time limit on it as well? And why only one playrhrough allowed? If there has to be a time limit, then can’t they at least give players as many chances as they want to ‘complete’ the demo?

Which would be much better and thematic than traditional x minutes trial.

    Makes me think they’ll download a console breaking virus, rendering your console obsolete, once the 30 minutes are up.

    Maybe they should have done that with a demo for Saw. Don’t complete it, say bye bye to your console.

  • No thanks. What a ridiculous concept. The time it takes to download what I’m sure will be a fairly large file and only allowed to play it once and for only 30 minutes? Boooo.

  • Will be giving this a try, game was great on the original playstation, I’m sure I remember the demo being on a disc with a similar time limit for the old playstation, wasn’t one shot though, tried to see as much as I could within the time limit learning areas each time to make runs faster.

  • Gave it a go last night. Didn’t like it. Deleted it after 15 mins or so cos I was extremely bored.

    • That you can get “extremely bored” in 15 minutes probably says more about you than the game.

      The only bad points was it was extremely easy, and kind of short, as you can complete the demo in 15 minutes.

      Still, don’t worry, i’m sure there’s loads of those generic “extremely interesting” 2d platformers for you to “enjoy” instead.

    • Why are you always insulting and unpleasant?

      And yeah a lot of those 2d platformers have fun gameplay. This didn’t. It was tedious, frustrating (how many bullets to the head does a zombie need to be finished off?), dull (it really has no idea how to actually portray tension or scares in a video game) and just felt pointless and unnecessary when so many games have done all this better since the original PS1 games and making it fully 3D now doesn’t hide the fact that it’s still playing catch up to a lot of superior games. At least with many other remakes their core gameplay still holds up extremely well and didn’t need such a drastic change. This just felt lazy. Like they have an engine to make something fresh and new but can’t be bothered coming up with new story and characters so use one from over 20 years ago instead. But hey it’s Capcom so no matter kinda generic trash they produce (or how much they try rip people off) their fans will keep buying their stuff.

      I just don’t find zombies all that interesting or fun to kill. They’re boring. Proper enemies with some degree of intelligence always make for more satisfying combat whether it’s melee or firearms or hand to hand. Lumbering bullet sponges just don’t do it for me.

      And a lot of 2d platformers are a hell of a lot more fun and engaging than this. If you’re only seeing ‘generic’ ones then you’re looking in the wrong place or haven’t got a clue what you’re talking about. Probably both.

    • Heck the fact you even used the word ‘generic’ is ironic cos that’s what this game feels like. In going full 3D it feels incredibly generic like a ton of other games. Guess that’s all that could be done when the original RE games controledl like crud even when new so they couldn’t very well go back to using those tank controls and fixed angles.

    • Better question is why are you taking it as an “insult”? Most of your problems seem to be you going into this with false preconceptions treating it like a generic 3rd person shooter.

      It’s survival horror not CoD zombies, your role is to survive wasting as few resources as possible (as in don’t kill stuff unless you have to), not get a 90 zombie killstreak from headshots. It even says in the article above that headshots aren’t the most effective way to deal with them.

      There are many more enemies than just zombies (which are basically just an annoyance), which you would know even if you finished the demo and saw the trailer. That you quit the tutorial doesn’t really give you much of a valid opinion.

      Which “superior” survival horror games is it playing catchup to? The grand total of none that are still around?

      You’re actually complaining that a remake has the same story and characters? It does actually have several elements changed (new items, puzzles, enemies, bosses, layout, side missions, etc, etc), they already made RE7 with this engine, and have used this battle system since the PS2, so none of what you say makes any sense. I guess the Sypro remaster must be “lazy” for using Sypro in the same levels, right?

      Every 2d platformer is just timing, and has been since the 1980s with endless lazy developers doing lazy gimmicks onto the same tired formula, while having lazy low end presentation. it makes me think you have played barely any if you think they’re still fun and different. You’re comparing it to a genre that didn’t even have it’s first entry until 20 years later, and maybe gets 1 entry a year (or none) vs the 910221 pixelated shovelware platformers.
