Castlevania Requiem brings two classics exclusively to PlayStation 4 next month

Bundle includes updated versions of Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night, out 26th October

Yes, PlayStation Blog readers, it’s true. You’ve been asking us, and we’ve listened. Castlevania Requiem: Symphony of the Night & Rondo of Blood is coming exclusively to PlayStation 4 via digital download on 26th October 2018. That’s only one month from today!

As you might’ve guessed already, Requiem will bundle together two classic Castlevania games; Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night. Both games are closely related by characters and plot, focusing on the stories of vampire hunter Richter Belmont and Dracula’s son Alucard respectively.

Originally released as a Japanese exclusive in 1993, Rondo of Blood is known as one of the best side-scrolling, action games of its time, picking up plenty of praise for its level design and rewarding difficulty. Both of which still stand the test of time. Just in case you were wondering.

On that subject, Symphony of the Night is quite simply one of the best games ever made. Don’t take our word for it though. The critical praise received at the time of its release and the plaudits it continues to receive speak volumes about its quality. Check any greatest games of all-time list and you’ll find Symphony of the Night up there. A sequel to Rondo of Blood, Symphony follows a similar formula to its predecessor, but expands on things with the introduction of RPG elements and some mind-blowing, genius level design.

Both games are the originals emulated for the PlayStation 4, with several updates that take advantage of the new hardware. This includes 4K/1080p upscaling, multiple high resolution backgrounds, different rendering options such as smoothing and full Trophy support. Word of warning though, that Platinum will be tough to get. Elsewhere, Requiem will make use of the DualShock 4’s vibration, analogue stick and speaker, with the latter meaning you’ll hear a cool little chime when you pick up an item.

Just look at those screenshots! Playing these classics is sure to bring back some good memories for Castlevania veterans. On the other hand, if you’re new to the series and fancy some retro goodness, then you can’t go wrong with this amazing bundle. Just be ready for a challenge!

Good news! You can pre-order Castlevania Requiem: Symphony of the Night & Rondo of Blood now on PlayStation Store.

  • Mantis knows you like to play Castlevania

  • Great news ! I already got them on PS Vita (thanks to Dracula X Chronicles ;)) but I’m glad Konami finally take care of them.

However, on which version is based Symphony of the Night ? If you tell me it’s the Saturn one (which is basically SotN 1.1) you’ll gain my pre-order ;)

    Thank you !

    • Only the people that haven’t played the Saturn one say this ;) Bad version and the extra areas aren’t worth your time.

    • It’s clearly based on the PS1 version. It even includes the originally dubbing and script, according to one of the screenshots… which means… DIE MONSTER! YOU DON’T BELONG IN THIS WORLD! XD

I wonder if Rondo of Blood will keep the original Japanese dubbing though. They used the DXC artwork but that game isn’t included…

    • @MrEibmoz it’s called “best of both worlds”. PS1 graphics and Saturn content. Nobody wanted the actual Saturn version. Just the extra content. Oh well, we missed that train once again. See you in 20 years.

    • You’re right, I didn’t play the Saturn version, buy I wish to play the extra areas.

As said before I wish it’s gonna be a “Complete” version with the best of the PS1 and Saturn versions instead of just a ‘remaster’ of the PS1 version.

    • Yeah Saturn version was a bad port. Messed up display and loiusy attemps at transparent effects among other things.

  • Great! SOTN is one of the best games I’ve ever played.

Is it possible to play in pillarboxed fullscreen 4:3 or do we have to play windowed, with backgrounds?

  • Considering this isn’t yet visible in the NL store, can anyone confirm this is getting a EU-wide release?

  • Oh boooy , i miss these old gold days <3

  • OMG, two of the best Castlevania games in one go? Sweet!

Symphony of the Night was practically the ORIGIN of the Metroidvania sub genre, and made IGA a gaming god (speaking of IGA, can’t wait for Bloodstained!).

It will be great to hear Dracula says those famous words again:

“What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets. But enough talk, have at you!”

  • But why not take the chance and release a “complete edition” of Symphony of the Night: Loading times and technical side of the PS1 version but with the additional characters and areas of the Sega Saturn release? That would’ve been something truly special..

  • Wouldn’t neeeed to buy Symphony again if PS1 support on PS4 was a thing and should be a thing (PSP games could run on PS4 if they allowed it too so I could play the Dracula X Chronicles version there). But yeah ok. Trophies might be fun but hard platinums never are. What’s the price? I can’t find a pre-order page for it on the store.

  • Funny thing is that Dracula X Chronicles, is still the best version of these 2 games. I hope you add the Saturn exclusive stuff to Symphony, but i wouldn’t hold my breath as it looks like a PS1 rom.

I am glad that it finally is on a platform i actually play, i still have my PS3 hooked up so that i can play PS1 version of Symphony. And I own the UMD version of Dracula X Chonicles for PSP, which i recommend everybody with a Vita or PSP to pick up from PSN as it has both games in all its classic glory + a 3d version of rondo, which is worse than the 2d sure, but it has added some stuff like a boss rush mode which is sick. And the Symphony version is based on the saturn version, which is the best version of that game. To bad it has redubbed though as the original dub is the best. If symphony ends up on the playstation classic, i will own 4 versions of it including this and all for Playstation platforms :).

    • DXC is the killer app that made me buy my first PSP! (although in 2009 due to personal reasons)

I don’t understand why people bash the 2.5D remake. It’s nice!

ps: SOTN in that collection is not based on the Saturn one. It’s the PS1 game with a new script and dubbing (it’s even in EFIGS languages for text), two exclusive Familiars found only in the old PS1 Japanese version, fixed glitches (no more Sword Familiar duplication glitch at the Master Librarian… it has new glitches however, like skipping Death at the start of the game by simply leaving the area immediatly after entering, without the need to get hit by Wargs), a boss battle against Maria from the Saturn version (but she uses the same boss battle theme as Richter, not the one in the Saturn version), and Maria as a unlockable character (but she plays more like the little Maria from Rondo of Blood)

EDIT: they also removed “I Am The Wind” and replaced it with a instrumental piece.

  • Excellent! I have Dracula X Chronicles but I may very well add these to my PS4 library.

  • 4.3 on a 1080p console ? not good i have got Haunted Castle (720p full screen) which makes up part of the series & yes where is the Pre Order can,t see it for looking

    • Widescreen on old games made with a 4:3 resolution in mind are never good. They don’t widen the camera, making you see more from the side, they cut sections from top and bottom of the screen. And sometimes, (like in Jak 2 HD) those cut sections of the camera show platforms you need to see but don’t.

    • They did a great job with Megaman Collection.

  • Kinda strange how they’re marketing this with the Dracula X Chronicles box art for Rondo, but it doesn’t look like that game is included in this collection. Also, I really hope that you can turn off the background wallpaper and just make it black. That was my biggest gripe with Dracula X Chronicles on PSP.

Anyway, still hyped for this, as Rondo is my favorite Castlevania of all time!

  • Why do we need these stupid backgrounds? Why not put a little effort and make a decent port with modern aspect ratios? If SotN is an emulated version, then it will have it’s original endless loading time? Why are giving such a poor treatment to one of the greatest games of all time?

  • I can’t find the preorder option on the uk store. Has it gone live yet?

  • Really stoked about this even though I have my original copies of both games as well as the Xbox 360 and PSP updates. Hoping Konami show the same love to the sadly stagnent Suikoden series. I’d love to see a complete HD collection.

  • ENOUGH with the bloody digital only releases! At the VERY LEAST you owe consumers a choice of digital OR physical.

Digital only games are ANTI-consumer. Stop trying to strip consumers of their rights, Sony.

  • “Originally released as a Japanese *PC Engine* exclusive in 1993, Rondo of Blood […]”

This looks like a poor package to be honest.

What’s up with those horrible backgrounds to fill the original 4:3 presentation? We don’t need those.

“Rendering options just as smoothing […]”

Are you serious? Those games need proper scanline shaders, not God-awful “smoothing”.

  • Can you confirm if this is permanent exclusive or timed exclusive?

Many are speculating this is timed exclusive meaning it will arrive on other platforms like Switch etc later on

Since this has happened many times with 3rd party games on PS4 before

    • I’m expecting a PC release, at least. Because the ESRB rated SOTN a looong time ago but nothing came out of it. But seriously, it is time. There’s only Lords of Shadow (all of them on PC) and Konami Collector’s Series Castlevania & Contra with the three NES emulated games. Final Fantasy was in the same situation until after Square-Enix re-released FF8 on Steam, there were only 4 games before that, and now we have every main chapter (one way or another, i.e. mobile ports and whatever lol) except the first two, and several spinoffs.

    • Duh they deleted my comment and i didn’t even write anything bad lol.

Anyway it is time to see it released on PC as well, ESRB rated SOTN many years ago after all, but nothing came out of it.

  • Pre-order is up on the store now. £15.99 is regular RRP with £12.79 as PS Plus pre-order price. :)

  • This is available on PS Store, you need to search for it, preorder discount too

  • I plan to get this. But Konami REALLY needs to put out a new current-gen, 4K Castlevania and Silent Hill with the polish of masterpieces like God of War and Spider-Man.

  • The SOTN version will be the full one or the PSX incomplete version?

  • Seems to bei Just an Emulation Release, which ist pitty because Castlevania SOTN would be an awesome title for a full Remaster/Remake.
