Forge gear to play as Horizon Zero Dawn’s Aloy in new Monster Hunter: World quest, out tomorrow

How Capcom collaborated with Guerilla on an epic Anjanath hunt, in a nod to HZD's Thunderjaw

Hello everyone! I am Ryozo Tsujimoto, producer on Monster Hunter: World. At the launch of Monster Hunter: World we released a free collaboration event quest where hunters were able to make their Palico companions look like a machine from Horizon Zero Dawn.

Starting 28th February at midnight GMT / 1.00am CET, a new free Horizon Zero Dawn collaboration event quest will be available, and this time, you’ll be able to play as Aloy herself once you collect the materials to forge the unique themed gear!

The quest will be live until 15th March at 23:59 GMT / 00.59 CET. If you missed the first event quest period to get the Watcher themed Palico gear, we have good news for you today. Event quests are on a rotating schedule so you will have an opportunity to try out the quest at a later date. Please stay tuned for more information on when it will return.

In this brand new collaboration event quest, you receive a request from the Nora Tribe chief to hunt down a giant Anjanath in the Ancient Forest.

Many captivating machines appear in Horizon Zero Dawn, but the one that made the biggest impression on the Monster Hunter: World development team was the Thunderjaw. Anjanath has a very similar skeletal structure to the Thunderjaw, so we felt it was the best fit to be the main adversary in the quest, but not just any Anjanath would do.

This Anjanath is at a scale that many players will have never before encountered, and your typical attacks may not reach its height. We hope hunters will take on this challenge and enjoy a fresh new experience.

Monster Hunter

If you complete this event quest, you’ll obtain the Nora Brave Trophy item that gives you access to crafting the Aloy α armor set and Aloy’s Bow weapon.

You cannot mix and match the full armour set with other pieces of gear, but unlike cosmetic armour sets, there are skills tied to the set that can also be upgraded. For example, the Aloy α set has the Marathon Runner skill which fits the character Aloy’s image perfectly.

This is a very effective and useful armour set. It’s important to note that this set is not exclusive to female hunters! If you’re playing as a male hunter, equipping the Aloy α set will also change your appearance to Aloy.

Monster Hunter

To participate in this free event quest, you must be Hunter Rank 11 or higher. You may need to complete the quest multiple times to obtain enough materials to craft all the Horizon Zero Dawn collaboration gear, so jump on in with friends and take down that giant Anjanath! Then swing on by the Smithy in Astera and start crafting all the gear.

Many of our staff are fans of Horizon Zero Dawn and have great respect for it. Discussions on the collaboration first began when Capcom pitched the idea to Sony. From there, we spoke with Guerrilla Games and received a wholehearted approval from them.

We shared some of our original design concepts with Guerrilla Games and received some ideas from them as well. It was a really smooth collaboration between each of our teams. It felt like such a natural fit to collaborate with Guerilla Games to allow hunters in Monster Hunter: World to experience the game through the eyes of the powerful hunter Aloy. We hope you all enjoy this great collaboration content!

  • It seems weird to do a collaboration with a game that’s basically just a poorly made, boring version of your own.

  • That’s cool but I’d rather just play Horizon: Zero Dawn since I feel it’s a far superior game in every way (Monster Hunter on PSP and the PS4 Beta bored the living smudge out of me, sorry) and Capcom like charging monies for all kinds of pointless crud

    • “charging monies for all kinds of pointless crud”. Obviously unlike Guerrilla Games who totally don’t do that, right??

    • Link doesn’t work. And Horizon doesn’t have much DLC looking at the store (i just see the Frozen Wild which is proper gameplay DLC) and Monster Hunter has a ton of silly stuff they want you buy (like stickers frickin’ gestures… £3.29 EACH for the Street Fighter ones), and never mind all the silly extras in their other games

    • It does work, the site just adds a “-” before playstation for some unknown reason. It’s a list of Killzone shadowfall DLC, which is, a big list of stickers and gesture packs, voice packs, playercard icons, etc etc (oh and like £7.99 for some).

    • I’d rather play tons of games over Horizon, but you don’t see me going on about it as if anyone cares or thinks it’s relevant. The games are very little alike.

Also complaining about DLC and stuff with MHW is frankly silly since they keep updating the game for free and release new event quests. If you want to whine that pointless stickers are overpriced then frankly your point is moot. I’ll take a free Deviljho over stickers any day of the week.

  • Guys if you like garbage in the comments, don’t throw it everywhere. respect others.

This is a cool idea, a cool collaboration, both games are wonderful, everyone is happy

    • Sorry dude. Had to stick up for Horizon cos miseryprincess is always slating it when, while not a huge fave of mine, I genuinely do find it a much better game than this one

    • There’s a difference between “sticking up for Horizon” and being petty for no reason. This collaboration is a partnership, and pointlessly criticizing one side is just as bad as doing so to the other side.

If you don’t like it, move on.

  • Cool. I’ll probably just do the quest but never use it, since I prefer the look of my hunter. But I like these kind of fun collabs.

    • Same, I used the Ryu set a couple of times, but then went back to my regular look.

At the very least, it gives you a guaranteed Gold-Crown for hunting this giant Anjanath.

  • Problem with this being an armour set, and not a costume, is that end game there will probably be better sets. Are there any more plans to release more costumes, like the samurai one?

    • Deviljho will most likely have an armor set and possibly weapons you can make from hunting it.

Apart from that some event quests reward materials you can use to craft certain items. A while back there was a quest where you could hunt Shamos to craft an eyepatch for example and there seems to be a few other event quests on the way with something similar.

If I remember correctly, they were “A Flash in the Pan” launching on March 9 and “A Simple Task” on March 9 (possibly Devijho).

  • If it’s HR11 I hope it’s high rank, or it’ll never get used!

  • Did the event quest twice, and already have enough Nora Brave Trophies to craft the bow and armor set. Three more and I’ll be able to upgrade the bow too. Please tell me there’s a decoration that adds the use of power coating to bows! I want to main it!

On a side-note: could we pretty please with sugar on top get a Blanka-chan outfit for our palicoes when the next Street Fighter event hits? I mean, Sakura, Blanka, those are the two new characters for SFV so far. It would make sense, right? ;-)

  • stop trying to make hzd a thing. this will never be a long lasting franchise so don’t plaster that name and dull character over everything that’s remotely successful. players are sick of that tech demo with ‘a little bit of this and a little bit of that’.

    • HZD was my favourite game last year, so don’t act smug like you’re speaking for all “players”.
