Saber Interactive offers advice to master the mud solo or in multiplayer

Hi all! My name is Pavel Zagrebelny, and I’m the lead developer and vision holder on Spintires: Mudrunner, which puts the player in the driver seat and dares them to take charge of incredible all-terrain vehicles, venturing across extreme landscapes with only a map and compass as your guides!

This game is a huge upgrade over the original, and includes six fully re-worked maps, a total graphical overhaul, a new Challenge mode with nine new dedicated maps, 13 new vehicles and other comprehensive improvements. It’s not just an enhanced edition, it’s the ultimate off-road simulation experience!

Mudrunner is quite a technical game, however, so we thought we’d give you some tips on how to best get started, and how to avoid getting stuck in deep mud. This is especially important in multiplayer, as you and up to three of your friends will be working together against harsh environments to get jobs done! Be careful out there!

1. How not to get stuck

Getting stuck is a problem! To avoid it, you’ll need to master your gearbox. Know the difference between 1st Gear, 1+ and Reverse. 1+ works similarly to 1st gear, but gives a vehicle extra torque. Be careful though! Fall below the speed threshold, and you’ll stall your engine.

Make sure you throttle the accelerator carefully to avoid spinning your wheels, too! In Hardcore, differential lock isn’t available on automatic gearboxes, so changing gears manually is important to know!

2. Capping your throttle

Reduce the speed of your wheels by capping your max throttle. This means it’s easier to control how fast they spin, meaning you throw up less mud. You can do this by shifting the stick gradually when at either 1st gear or Reverse.

3. Watch where you’re going

Not every surface in MudRunner is the same. Pay close attention to where you’re driving, as different surfaces vary in friction and in how solid they are. The darker the soil, the softer it is. Heavy vehicles benefit from their torque and large wheels there, but risk getting stuck deep. Lighter vehicles will want to stay away, and function better in rocky and dry environments.

4. When in a cinch, winch

Every vehicle comes equipped with an important tool – a winch. Made to get vehicles out of tough situations, the winch can be attached to many different points on vehicles and trees. You can pull yourself up sharp inclines with a winch, as well as out of mud.

5.  Vision is key

In Hardcore mode, the path to your objective won’t be displayed while driving. You’re free to take any path you fancy, but be careful! The world is dangerous, and plenty of hazardous routes hide in plain sight. Head to high ground with a scouting vehicle or unlock watchpoints to gain valuable vision.

6. Keep an eye on your fuel

Tasks can often turn from quick jobs into long missions, and nothing makes that more stressful than a vehicle running out of fuel. Make sure you pack enough fuel to complete your task, or your logging job will quickly turn into a rescue mission.

7. Pack the right tools

Make sure you pack the right tools for the job – doing a logging run? Take the correct log carrier. Transporting fuel, you’ll need a fuel tank. Turn up with the wrong gear, and you might end up looking foolish!

8. Hitting things hurts

Vehicles are sturdy, but they can still take damage. Hitting objects while driving will cause damage to your truck, where as flooding your engine will cause engine damage and stall your truck. Drive quickly if you need to, but remember, it’s better safe than sorry!
