Naughty Dog offers a first glimpse at the follow-up to its acclaimed post-apocalyptic epic

Let’s cut to the chase. The sequel to The Last of Us is happening. It’s called The Last of Us Part II and here is the just released announcement trailer.

I can’t tell you how satisfying it is to finally be able to say that Ellie and Joel are back for another intense, harrowing, and emotional adventure. Like many of you, we have a deep love for the world of The Last of Us and its characters, and while a sequel may have seemed like a foregone conclusion, it wasn’t the case. We knew that it needed to be a story worth telling and, perhaps more importantly, a story worthy of Joel and Ellie. After spending years on different ideas (and almost giving up), we finally uncovered a story that felt special—a story that evolved into an epic journey.

It’s still early days for the project–the game’s release is a ways off–but we couldn’t wait any longer to give you a glimpse of what’s to come. We’re going to let the trailer speak for itself, but expect more information about The Last of Us Part II in the coming months.

In the meantime, if you’re at PSX today or watching the live stream from home, don’t miss our panel at 2:00pm PT where I’ll be joined by Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker to talk about the reveal. Keep an eye on Naughty Dog’s channels to see more of what we’re up to this weekend at PSX.

Until next time, endure and survive!

  • I may speak for many people when I say this omg omg omg omg this is why I’m a PlayStation fan from birth

  • Ps can we just have this game now?

  • Thanks for ruining even the remotest chance of me having a social life ever again, Naughty Dog!

  • R.I.P Social LiFe!!

  • Early in development? So I’m guessing PS5 will be out before this then. :/

    • Do you even believe that yourself? They just recently released PS4 PRO and PS4 VR. Do you seriously even think they’ve even began making up ideas for the PS5 yet? Sure, it might take 1-2 years to release this game, but I don’t think we’ll see a PS5 until 2020 at the earliest. It took 8-9 years after the release of the PS3 before they released the PS4. It will most likely take around the same time to release the PS5, if not longer due to the recent release of PS4 PRO and PS4 VR.

  • Great news :) Please don’t give us a censored version this time, though.

    • That’s not up to them, it’s up to our rubbish ratings and classification systems.

    • Actually it was. Germany and/or Australia wanted censorship edits so the whole of the EU region got stuck with the censored version. They should have released the uncut version for countries such as ours, that didn’t require censorship.

    • What was censored in this so called “censored version”?

    • @NiclasB1992 Executions in MP. Haven’t played MP myself, but it supposedly gave people with the uncut version an advantage.

    • Oh, I’ve never played on multiplayer, so I didn’t even know that.

    • I’m sure it’s more Sony than Naughty Dog. But like KaneTheGoth said, it’s because of Germany and Australia. Why they didn’t just release a censorship patch for that region instead of making it censored for the entire EU is beyond me.
If there’s one thing I hate it’s censorship, at least it was just the MP.

  • I’m not a huge fan of Eurogamer, but the following sites has some decent examples.

Anyway, not looking to post hijack. Congratulations on part 2, I know a lot of people are very excited about this :)

  • Replaced my Xbox One with a PS4 couple of months ago and that seems to have been a good choice actually. One of the reasons to switch was The Last of Us and while for me the game is “only” very good, I would like to see the sequel surpass it. This way or another, Naughty Dog sells thousands of PS4’s.

    • Yep, seriously thinking about it now too. Sony is killing with those exclusives, amazing job. I’m just quite lazy about switching because you know how it looks when you have the console since few years – lots of games bought, controllers, subscriptions, and other accessories that won’t be compatible with PS4 Pro once I get it. I need to seriously think about it. :P

  • Holy holy holy holy [DELETED].

  • This is probably one of the best news for quite some time for Playstation.

I’m also really happy that you stick with Ellie and Joel. I know a massive amount of people said that you shouldn’t. But really The Last of Us is Ellie and Joel.

Naughty Dog you have pretty much always been one of my favorite studios. Though I will not hype up myself for the games. It’s much better to just take a calm approach and maybe get positively surprised.

By the way, even though it will be a hard wait, then take as much time as needed. That’s a thing I like about you, you take your time instead of spitting games out without a second thought.

  • Ellie looks angry, someone will be very sorry they messed with her.

  • I’m one of the few that was pretty upset with the announcement, Joel and ellie story ended pretty well and conclusively so it’s sad to see them back. The world was so interesting and developed you could have created some new characters to explore it more. I’m worried all your going to do now is bank on the 1st game and force emotion out if us by harming/killing off one if the two :/ such a missed opportunity.

    • Yeah, they’re always messing things up. Why don’t you just go to their office and tell them exactly what to write? That way you can’t be dissapointed.

    • I was initially worried about this too but after seeing the panel I’m good. He said the characters are intricately connected to the world and it just wouldn’t work without them as well. The story also seems to closely connect to the first, so not a new story altogether with the same characters. This could have gone way worse and I’m pretty confident this will be gold again.

  • Love how they managed to make Ellie older but still look very much the same (compared to Uncharted 4 in which most characters looked distinctively different from before), she even seems to have more of her voice actor, Ashley Johnson, in her (the cheeks). Love how they named it part 2 as opposed to just 2, gives it a more connected feel, not to mention that it sounds better and reminds me of Godfather :p I figured they wouldn’t change the well known name altogether so this is a great compromise.

  • The opening will probably be similar to the last game, but this time Joel dies in Ellie’s arms. Along her journey Ellie meets a 10 year old boy she befriends. She learns to love again and does everything to protect him. Btw the game ends a few years in the future and it shows Ellie giving birth and it’s a boy. She names the boy, Joel. We’re all gonna be balling at this point. The End.

  • Just fantastic news and it’s great to hear that you are also very conscious about making sure the story is worthy to follow the first game without detracting from it at all.
Can’t wait, best game ever made part Ii

  • This trailer makes it look like the game will have a very boring revenge fantasy story…

  • sony is outdoing microsoft in every department of gaming

  • Absolutely amazing news, loved the first game and I’m sure I will enjoy this offering just as much, if not more. Such a deeply connected story with zombie style creatures to kill/avoid, not to mention the nutters with guns, that we all know will surface it it all goes to hell, to serve justice to. What isn’t there to love!

  • I bet at the end joel or ellie gets eaten by a zombie someone always dies

  • This is the reason you play on ps4, Finally they’re back thank’s naughty dog :,)
