Uncharted 4: Survival co-op mode announced, launches next month

Team up with some friends and take on hordes of increasingly powerful enemies

Since announcing it as part of our Uncharted 4 multiplayer road map back in May, one of the most common questions we get is: what’s in store for co-op? Well, today I’m excited to give you a first look at Uncharted 4: Survival, our new cooperative and solo mode that will launch in mid-December.

Survival is a wave-based mode where you and up to two additional friends can take on swarms of increasingly powerful enemies and unique objectives.

If you played Co-Op Arena from Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3, you’re going to feel right at home in Survival. We’ve built upon and evolved the core gameplay experience with an entirely new level of depth, challenge, and variety. From new enemy types and powerful new bosses to a dedicated progression system and expansive upgradable arsenal, Survival is all about strategy, camaraderie, and skill.

Uncharted 4: Survival co-op

Across 50 waves and 10 maps, you’ll face off against Shoreline mercenaries, heavily armoured Brutes, Snipers, Hunters and more, that will only get more precise, more aggressive and better equipped as time goes on. Every 10 waves culminate in an intense boss battle, including our all-new Pirate Warlords.

Inspired by the story of Uncharted 4, some of the Founders of Libertalia have arrived to hunt you down with powerful Mystical attacks. Don’t miss Adam Baldridge himself as the Djinn-wielding Warlord boss in the video above.

But Survival requires more than just dispatching enemies. To reach wave 50, you’ll need to work your way through objective modes where victory depends on defending a particular area, collecting treasures within a time limit, or taking out marked enemies. We might even throw a curveball at you from time to time, like when an active modifier makes it so only pistols, headshots, or melee attacks do damage to enemies.

As you take out enemies and complete objectives, you’ll earn in-game cash, which can be used to unlock and equip weapons and gear via arsenal crates around the map. You can buy everything from Heavy Weapons, long guns, Mysticals, and more.

Survival also features its own dedicated progression system, Relic Challenges, and loadouts. As you rank up, you’ll earn upgrades for your weapons, as well as new items, such as Survival-exclusive boosters. There are also vanity items that can only earned by playing Survival, but can be used to deck out your character in both Survival and Multiplayer.

Best of all, the challenge grows with you. Enemies will adapt to your increased firepower and there are multiple difficulties to choose from. Those that finish Survival on Hard Mode will unlock Crushing Mode, which as the name suggests, is the ultimate test of your will and determination.

But this is just a small taste of what to expect when Survival launches next month. To see more, be sure to check out IGN’s exclusive coverage and extended gameplay videos.

  • How’bout that story DLC bro’s. PSX?

  • Is the “solo mode” described here the “single player DLC” ?

  • How about Co-op Adventure?

  • I’ll start off the train of positive comments because this looks absolutely great, can’t wait to delve into it with my friends, good job guys!

  • Finally a game I’m looking forward to! Oh wait, it’s part of a game I already own & have paid season pass for so yay! :D

    • meaning i’m happy i haven’t got to pay any money and cos christmas presents for people i know is gonna cost me enough. I love Uncharted :D

  • Split-screen? Please…

  • I’d like real coop modes, not survivals.

  • A horde mode?

That’s an idea that must have taken you all of 30 seconds to think up.

  • This looks awesome, cant wait to try this out!
Split screen would be nice, even if just for this mode.

  • Ya what about Co-op Adventure? This what we was waiting survival mode only come on ND you done more much better in the pas when Amy Hennig was the director of the game U2&3 had the best MP ever was completed and everything was included since this long hair dude take over u guys start to go down big time RIP

  • @nody12

You sound like you are 12.

    As for the co-op:

it kind of makes sense; in the objective mode you are referring to you had a cutscene where they moved to an arena which included an objective and some waves of enemies to defeat in order to move on the next arena/objective.

Now it seems they have combined the modes from Uncharted 2 and 3 into one thus the number of waves is upped from 10 to 50 this time around. In other words it is going to be longer but you will get everything from the last UC co-op games in one package. Of course, for those that like shorter bursts of co-op, this will be disappointing. I, however, am totally game for this.

  • I assume this is going to be free, since you didn’t add a price

  • This will be the first time I will play U4 on my Pro ^_^

  • Was waiting on the Co-op Adventure I’ll give this a miss.

  • If anyone wants to play this when it comes out add me.

  • Sounds an awful lot like Gears of War’s horde mode. Which is not a bad thing at all in my book.

  • Please ND just dont make zombie mode or stuff like that,Im tired of zombies that come out of the closet, series, games, movies etc.

  • Is this a free update or do we have to buy it?

  • Naughty Frauds show yet again that they don’t have a single creative bone in their bodies. Uncharted 2 and 3 had mediocre MP but UC4 MP is straight up bad to the point where it died off in under a week. In an effort to keep this dead game on life support Naughty Frauds flat out ripped off Horde Mode from Gears, even to the point where the 100% carbon copied the fabricator from Gears 4.

    Truly disgusting Naughty Frauds.

    • Died off in under a week?
I think you might be exaggerating just a bit?

I’m not having any trouble finding matches, and I play on a regular basis.
When you say it’s bad, maybe it’s just bad for you?
Personally I’m loving it, the mechanics make it stand out from a crowded MP market as far as I’m concerned.
And the classic beta weekends they’ve done recently shows that they’re listening to feedback.

      Also, Naughty Frauds!
      Excellent wordplay my friend, excellent…
Definitely worth using three times in case people didn’t pick up on it the the first two times.
Can’t have people missing out on that slice of fried gold!

  • Couch coop? Split-screen? Online coop?

  • This really should’ve been included at launch. Would’ve probably kept me playing as opposed to switching to other games after finishing the campaign. Although it’s not just the lack of that, I also didn’t like the controls as much as I did in previous entries (2 and 3 are still my favourite third person games in terms of mechanics and controls). Amazing game ofcourse, but I prefer the Amy Hennig entries in every aspect (writing and pacing as well). Oh well, at least this way it doesn’t hurt as much knowing it’s the last in the series… I’ll probably pick it up again to give the co op a try sometime in the next years, but I don’t expect to get hooked on it anymore like I was on the previous games.

    • Alas, the voice of sense. The very first sentence of Stonesthrow’s comment was and IS the crux of many a frustration of the game, irrespective of the permutations of the co op content. If ND were to release U2 and U3 remasters WITH multiplayer, I’d snap them up in a heartbeat.

Amy Hennig’s departure was the writing on the wall and the fractured, splintered release of U4 had done a sizeable amount of fans no favours I’m afraid, having said that – the quality of U4 cannot be argued, however the limited Day One release was a bitter pill to swallow as a HUGE fan of the franchise.

Will dust off and play when Survival drops and try to get my mates in on the action.

  • How is that on the ps1 I could play 4 player splitscreen games with no issues, on a 20 inch telly, but now we’re lucky to get couch co-op. Splitscreen would be so easy on my 50 inch compared to the old days. Bring back proper co-op.

  • Always wanted this on the last of us

  • Don’t know why game developers bother anymore. Too many self entitled whiny little kids seam to play games these days. This looks good. So what if it wasn’t at launch, or it’s not story mode co-op. Naughty dog are providing everything free. There are far too many moan moan moan posts. Don’t like it how about you develop a game and show us how it’s done?

  • When the update comes out
