A Beginner’s Guide to Dead Star on PS4

Pilot through asteroid belts, minefields, and space junkyards in this free PS Plus game for April

Today’s the day — Dead Star is launching on PS4 and it’s free for PlayStation Plus members this month!

Before you start your journey towards becoming the galaxy’s greatest pilot, we wanted to throw some tips your way.

Dead Star is a 10-on-10 multiplayer shooter set on the fringes of known space, where teams of outlaws and scavengers fight for survival in a galactic prison known as The Wastes. Dead Star incorporates features from multiple modern genres, including RPGs and MOBAs, while remaining true to its roots in arcade-based space combat.

Here are four quick tips as you head into battle.

Choose Your Ship

Dead Star offers many different ships, each with its own unique set of powers and roles in combat, broken down into the following types:

  • Scouts: these sleek, nimble ships are useful for exploration. They don’t have much combat power, but they can capture outposts four times faster than anything else.
  • Raiders: a mix of speed and power, Raiders are formidable in combat and also pack double the cargo capacity — making them the ideal class for upgrading your bases.
  • Frigates: the heavy hitters of Dead Star, Frigates pack a lot of health and offensive firepower at the cost of being among the slowest ships in the game.

Every ship class has three alien variations — the type you choose depends on your preferred gameplay style. The Valant are your offensive-minded powerhouses, loaded full of weaponry that take the fight to your enemies and create havoc on the front line.

The Ithid are perfect for pilots who thrive on guerrilla tactics — their cloaking devices and teleportation allow for quick surprise attacks.

The Estari are the support crew of the three races. These ethereal energy beings can repair damage to ships while also packing a serious punch with their lightning-based attacks.

You can carry three ships into battle, from any race or any class, so choosing the perfect loadout is crucial!

Battle for Victory

Each region of space in Dead Star is procedurally generated from a collection of asteroid belts, minefields, derelict space junkyards, and dozens of other obstacles, so gaining intel from early scouting is vital to your team’s performance.

At the start of every match, your team’s main goal is exploring the region of space and capturing neutral outposts to establish your front line — victory can be achieved either by destroying your enemy’s Home Base or by earning a set amount of resources from captured outposts. Early captures can turn the tide of battle!

Once you’ve captured an outpost, you’ll want to upgrade it using ore mined from asteroids within the region. Deposit enough ore into the outpost and you’ll unlock new features, including turret defences, A.I. units you can commandeer to fly alongside your ship, or even sector-wide bonuses for your team. In addition to helping your team, upgrading outposts also earns you experience for your ship!

Level Up and Upgrade Your Ship

As you battle for control of the region you’ll be earning experience for your ship by destroying enemy ships, capturing outposts, mining ore, or performing unique tactical actions. Earn enough experience and you’ll gain an upgrade point which can be used to unlock new powers for your ship or improve powers you’ve already unlocked.

Each ship has five unique systems that can be upgraded up to four times, improving everything from damage and defensive capabilities to general upgrades to your health, shields, and speed. Finding builds that complement your play style is important, but don’t worry if you don’t know where to start: we’ve incorporated an Automated Upgrade system that provides you with a build carefully selected by the dev team to keep you in the action and also learn each ship’s abilities.

Earn Loot

After every match in Dead Star you’ll earn rewards based on your rating as an effective pilot in five different categories, ranging from how many enemy ships you’ve destroyed to how many bases you’ve upgraded. The higher your rating in each category, the rarer rewards you’ll receive — whether it’s a cosmetic skin for your favourite ship, a fancy new portrait for your pilot, or rare components you can use to permanently improve your ship’s abilities.

Also keep an eye out for Contracts — these extremely rare rewards grant your crew access to a powerful Capital Ship used to invade a series of live player matches. If your crew can survive the battle against the Dead Star community, you’ll earn the rarest rewards in the galaxy!

Good luck, pilots — we’ll see you on the battlefield!

  • I just can’t find a dedicated single player story campaign. Is my game broken?

  • Finished the tutorial but says server is down for maintenance when I try to do anything else.

  • Yawn, yet another simulated 3D 2D pewpew game, I have better games in my underpants.

    • Why don’t you try it out before whining? It’s actually pretty fun, and i’m not a fan of online games.

    • Second MaxDieHard, its actually quite a fun tactical game. And that’s coming from someone who didn’t enjoy Galak Z

    • Second CluckNuggets on yet another pewpew game. Also have no interest in online games these days, the best has already happened going by what has followed.

Actually enjoyed Galak-Z once I got used to the controls but I generally steer clear of games that technically could of been made years ago.

PS4 has yet to impress me the same way the PS3 did, I’m just not seeing the step-up in quality. If anything 90% of the PS4 gaming library is made up of either PS3 upgraded games or retro/pixel art games I wouldn’t have wanted to play on a PS1 let alone a PS4!!

  • This looks like that other thing from last month that I didn’t play either. Really looking forward to playing Zombi though.

    • Not even simulair i have been disapointment almoust every month but this game is so much fun an addicting. Now two gems helldivers and dead star where i can get lost for a looong time. So far best ps+ month since i become member in june.

  • So, any news on when we will actually be able to play the game and put these tips to use? As it stands, I just get an infinite waiting screen when trying to play. Tried changing all settings, reinstalling the game a few times, everything I can think of. Still can’t join a game.

Multiplayer only game, and multiplayer doesn’t work. Kinda feel like this is a late Aprils fools joke and they’ll put the REAL PS+ game in the lineup tomorrow or something. And if this isn’t a joke? Well, wow. This game definitely shouldn’t have been released yet, since problems like this can kill a small game before it even really gets a chance (as it has for me).

  • Everytime i read “beginner’s guide” i think the game Beginner’s Guide is making its way to PS4

  • This game is a bust. Servers down all day then when I finally get into a session it takes a dump on the lobby screen and fires me back to the main menu. Ah well, Souls 3 in a few days.

  • This game reminds me multiplayer version of Space Rangers (15 years old game for PC). And It’s the first game for my 9 months PS Plus membership, which i added to my library:)

  • I don’t understand all the whine towards this game, I was able to play just fine yesterday evening. No problems joining a multiplayer game.

  • Don’t feel bad or left out, I won’t play this or any other of the mediocrity added to the IGC over the last few months

  • They should have taken notice of older games in the genre to get the control of the ship right.

  • cool game thnx for guide

  • Game looks great but MMO…. Not for me much prefer a solo campaign shooter

    • This is some kinda difrent style of moba. Were every moba is preaty same this fell fresh and does something better than any other moba there are rly lot of builds and literaly every ship feels plays difrent.

  • Wish there was a single player campaign too, multiplayer only is mostly a bad thing… Like the gamestyle (with story mode and some Elite or Escape Velocity like enhancements it would be AMAZING) I really miss those type of games since Rebel Galaxy was muuuuuuuch too short and No Mans Sky will have some new twists i hope that will work well not making the game dull!

  • Guys having trouble finding matches try changing your MTU setting to automatic.

  • It’s a relatively great game with crappy players. As a trophy hunter playing this is cancerous. Ppl play it like TDM and dont PTFO. It ridiculous to see players push enemy outposts with NO ONE Else but themselves and ofc proceed 2 get rekt’d. Also, these trophies are wack. Very tedious and alot of difficult ones are bronze? Maaaan. Also, i believe there’s a mic problem for when the very few who do mic up all i hear is jarring static, leading me 2 muting the whole squad. Makes wonder if ppl heard me for players already dont heed the in-game chat symbols
