Vote To Play: Why you should choose Grow Home

Find out more about Ubisoft Reflections’ brilliant, experimental adventure

Grow Home is coming to PlayStation 4 on 1st September. Yay! Even better, you get to decide if it’s going to be free for all PlayStation Plus members, as we’re featuring in the new Vote to Play campaign. We’d love your vote, and we’re excited to know what you think of the game!

Developing Grow Home has been a real adventure for us. It actually started as an experiment in procedural animation, but even in the early stages we could see a unique charm and personality coming from the way our character moved. The more we tinkered the more we felt compelled to try and build a game around it.

At Reflections we’re used to working on big-team, big-budget, high-profile titles. Creating a smaller game like this was very new to us, so we had to take a different approach. A tiny team of eight set about building a game we could share with Ubisoft staff around the world – we wanted to prove that we had something fun, instead of just promising it.

The game spread internally, quickly reaching the desktops of top management who jumped on board giving us the go-ahead to officially launch it.

Grow Home is the story of BUD, a Botanical Utility Droid sent on a quest across the galaxy to seek out a new species of flora to help oxygenate his home world. He finds the perfect specimen in the Star Plant. BUD’s mission is to grow it to maturity and harvest the seeds it produces, resulting in a towering two-kilometre-high bridge from the ground to his space ship.

Along the way you’ll explore floating islands, encounter strange plants and unusual animals. The Star Plant is a living thing so growing and steering it is quite a wild ride. The shape it takes is all up to you, as you grow your own playground in the sky.

Using BUD’s hands, you’ll push, pull, and grab onto objects, as well as climb. Grabbing with the left and right trigger buttons brings a unique feel to how you interact with the world, especially the climbing which can be very physical and perilous – you get a real sense of vertigo and you’re acutely aware of the long drop below you!

As you make your way toward the sky, you’ll discover other ways of getting around faster. That’s where discoveries like the teleportation pads, bouncing leaves, flower parachutes and leaf glider come in. It might be safer to grow and climb everywhere, but once you have a glider or parachute to use if you fall then you’ll begin to push yourself to take bigger and bolder risks – jumping, bouncing, gliding and falling with confidence.

We wanted to challenge how we make games at Ubisoft Reflections, and Grow Home has given us a chance to experiment on a much smaller scale than we’re used to. It’s a project born out of our passion for games and a determination to do things differently. We feel we’ve created a beautiful and intriguing world that invites you to climb that next ledge and see what new surprises you’ll find. We hope you enjoy the adventure!

  • This is getting my vote. Game looks awesome!

  • I really hope this wins. I’m going to vote for it no matter what. I played this at the Game On 2.0 exhibition and it looks really good. Most of all. Reflections is actually based in Newcastle. My hometown. :D

  • I can’t find the app on PS4 to vote for this..

  • Can’t be bothered with this when can we vote for AAA’s?

    • What would you like to vote for?
I’m interested in just how pie in the sky your ideas will be….
GTA V vs The Witcher maybe?

    • No Harrisown I would prefer something decent :)

    • Dream on boy..

    • Boy? I’m 34.

    • Decent? What constitutes decent…a game with a bloated budget? Seriously? If huge budgets equated to quality products then Michael Bay would win Oscars and be rewarded at Cannes every year instead of being voted as worst director.

There’s an old legend about a play where the actress was given a role because her significant other threw loads of money at the production. The actress however was so poor in her role as Anne Frank that when the gestapo showed up someone in the audience yelled “she’s in the attic!”

      Month of Oct I nominate
      PS4
Murdered Soul Suspect..I would suggest Roundabout but it’s not AAA
      WWE (whatever game)

      PS3
      Yaiba Ninja Gaiden Z
Escape from Dead Island or Magus (dear whatever godform let them give us Magus)

      Vita
Call of Duty Black Ops yada yada
(too bad we already had Dynasty Warriors Next) so…any Lego game we haven’t already had

Personally I think the plus team should just give us the worst AAA games ever made until the end of the year just to show that large sums of money spent to create a game doesn’t mean quality. I will also promise not to moan about anything on the blog if Sony does this ^_^

    • So no suggestions of what AAA games we should be voting for?
I’m 35 so your still a boy to me :D
Just imagine it……imagine that next month we all get a AAA game. Whooopie!!
Then you find out that game is Watchdogs. Imagine that.

  • I can’t wait to now receive emails from all the companies every month begging to vote for them… Ugh, good work Ubisoft.

  • This is unfair, if we’re asked to vote for Indie games by Indie devs then Ubisoft and their associated studios shouldn’t be a participant. The Armello team told us they took 4 years to make their game. How is this fair?

    • Amello looks so god damn boring. I’m not fussed who is making the game as long as it’s good but hating on it because it’s funded by a huge company is crazy and not fair on the small team that actually worked on Grow Home. If Armello doesn’t win, buy it. It is as simple as that Just like I will buy Grow Home if that doesn’t win.

    • I’m not hating but concerned, it just doesn’t look good when three games compete and one of them is backed by a major publisher. It looks like this game is the better of the three too. I’m always in favour of a level playing field in any competition. It’s like this game has an aimbot and the others have a riot shield haha.

  • Ill buy this if it does not win.

  • So if the game i want doesnt win we will never get it or it will just be for sale and not a Plus game?!

    • It will be added to the PS store with a special Ps+ discount (probably 20%) and you are free to buy it, if it doesn’t win.

  • Now this I like. Something new, something fresh, something creative and unique. We need more of these kind of fun games, without all the killing and magic. Just plain old fun. You have my vote and I hope the vote of most others as well.

  • Just voted for this :)

  • This has my vote!

  • Will look other candidate

  • A note: this has only about 3-4 hours of gameplay. Might look fun, but VERY short.

  • Why I cannot vote???!!!
It says “voting is not available now”
Sony why you are very careless about our store?
I opened US account just to see what they have, literally ours is nothing comparing to their.
I’m not asking for the same but at least, we need to see that you’re caring.
Games prices in the store is as the European countries prices, very high prices, WHY? we don’t have any taxes in our country, games in our store has to be lowest price between all the store.

  • “You all chose poooorly”
Now look, you’ve got this thing :(

  • I love how Ubi gets to compete this garbage, with two indie games that look great…. It’s a goddamn platformer…. Like we don’t have 80 million of those already. Not to mention all you do is glide and climb….sounds like a blast!
